Study on surface properties of sodiumdodecyl sulfate and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide mixed surfactants and their interaction with dyes

β-CD-Induced Precipitation of Eriochrome Black T Recovered via CTAB-Assisted Foam Fractionation for Adsorption of Trace Cu(II)

In order to remove and reuse the ecotoxic dye Eriochrome black T (EBT) from dyeing wastewater, we used a process called cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted foam fractionation. By optimizing this process with response surface methodology, we achieved an enrichment ratio of 110.3 ± 3.8 and a recovery rate of 99.1 ± 0.3%. Next, we prepared composite particles by adding β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to the foamate obtained through foam fractionation. These particles had an average diameter of 80.9 μm, an irregular shape, and a specific surface area of 0.15 m²/g. Using these β-CD-CTAB-EBT particles, we were able to effectively remove trace amounts of Cu²⁺ ions (4 mg/L) from the wastewater. The adsorption of these ions followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, and the maximal adsorption capacities at different temperatures were 141.4 mg/g at 298.15 K, 143.1 mg/g at 308.15 K, and 144.5 mg/g at 318.15 K. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the mechanism of Cu²⁺ removal via β-CD-CTAB-EBT was spontaneous and endothermic physisorption. Under the optimized conditions, we achieved a removal ratio of 95.3 ± 3.0% for Cu²⁺ ions, and the adsorption capacity remained at 78.3% after four reuse cycles. Overall, these results demonstrate the potential of β-CD-CTAB-EBT particles for the recovery and reuse of EBT in dyeing wastewater.

Rationalizing the Design of Pluronics-Surfactant Mixed Micelles through Molecular Simulations and Experiments

Aqueous systems comprising polymers and surfactants are technologically important complex fluids with tunable features dependent on the chemical nature of each constituent, overall composition in mixed systems, and solution conditions. The phase behavior and self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers can be changed drastically in the presence of conventional ionic surfactants and need to be clearly understood. Here, the self-aggregation dynamics of a triblock copolymer (Pluronics L81, EO₃PO₄₃EO₃) in the presence of three cationic surfactants (with a 12C long alkyl chain but with different structural features), viz., dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), and ethanediyl-1,2-bis(dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-2-12), were investigated in an aqueous solution environment. The nanoscale micellar size expressed as hydrodynamic diameter (D_h) of copolymer-surfactant mixed aggregates was evaluated using dynamic light scattering, while the presence of a varied micellar geometry of L81-cationic surfactant mixed micelles were probed using small-angle neutron scattering. The obtained findings were further validated from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, employing a simple and transferable coarse-grained molecular model based on the MARTINI force field. L81 remained molecularly dissolved up to ∼20 °C but phase separated, forming turbid/translucent dispersion, close to its cloud point (CP) and existed as unstable vesicles. However, it exhibited interesting solution behavior expressed in terms of the blue point (BP) and the double CP in the presence of different surfactants, leading to mixed micellar systems with a triggered morphology transition from unstable vesicles to polymer-rich micelles and cationic surfactant-rich micelles. Such an amendment in the morphology of copolymer nanoaggregates in the presence of cationic surfactants has been well observed from scattering data. This is further rationalized employing the MD approach, which validated the effective interactions between Pluronics-cationic surfactant mixed micelles. Thus, our experimental results integrated with MD yield a deep insight into the nanoscale interactions controlling the micellar aggregation (Pluronics-rich micelles and surfactant-rich micelles) in the investigated mixed system.

Self-Assembly of NaOL-DDA Mixtures in Aqueous Solution: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

The self-assembly behaviors of sodium oleate (NaOL), dodecylamine (DDA), and their mixtures in aqueous solution were systematically investigated by large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, respectively. The interaction mechanisms between the surfactants, as well as the surfactants and solvent, were revealed via the radial distribution function (RDF), cluster size, solvent-accessible surface area (SASA), hydrogen bond, and non-bond interaction energy. Results showed that the molecules more easily formed aggregates in mixed systems compared to pure systems, indicating higher surface activity. The SASA values of DDA and NaOL decreased significantly after mixing, indicating a tighter aggregation of the mixed surfactants. The RDF results indicated that DDA and NaOL strongly interacted with each other, especially in the mixed system with a 1:1 molar ratio. Compared to van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions between the surfactant molecules were the main contributors to the improved aggregation in the mixed systems. Besides, hydrogen bonds were found between NaOL and DDA in the mixed systems. Therefore, the aggregates in the mixed systems were much more compact in comparison with pure systems, which contributed to the reduction of the repulsive force between same molecules. These findings indicated that the mixed NaOL/DDA surfactants had a great potential in application of mineral flotation.

UV-Vis studies of methyl red in the presence of sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate/acetone and sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate/acetone/water

This paper reports the spectra of methyl red (MR) in the presence of sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (AOT) by UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 298.15 ± 0.1 K. The experiment shows the effect of acetone, AOT and water concentration on methyl red. The spectral study was based on R parameter, which is defined as [H₂O]/[AOT]. The spectral study was possible in the range of R = 0-20 only because the solution appeared to be cloudy above this amount of water. When the concentration of AOT increased, the absorption of MR decreased, indicating a hypochromic shift, which is due to the interaction between AOT and MR. The absorbance increases with the increasing value of R, which indicates that the H₂O molecule hinders the interactional forces between AOT and MR. The distribution constant was calculated by using nonlinear regression analysis and its variation with different R values indicate the effect of water content in the distribution behavior of MR in between the solvent and micellar region whereas the variation of the binding constant with different R values indicates the affinity of micelles to bind MR molecule. The study of this binding affinity will be very helpful in textile dyeing, decolorization of industrial effluents and development of azo-based molecules in novel photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Effect of Temperature and Additives on the Interaction of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Drug with Polyvinylpyrrolidone and Bovine Serum Albumin: Spectroscopic and Molecular Docking Study

The fluoroquinolone antibiotic drug namely ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CFH) is widely prescribed for the treatment of different bacterial infections. The interaction of CFH with a synthetic polymer, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and biopolymer, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by UVvisible and fluorescence spectroscopic methods at different temperatures. The binding constant (K _b ) for the CFH-PVP complex was determined from the Benesi-Hildebrand plot. PVP of different molecular weights (MW) (such as 24,000, 40,000, 360,000, and 700,000 g. mole^-1) were used for the interaction between CFH and PVP. The gradual increase in K _b value and the complexation reaction was found to be much enhanced with the augmentation of the MW of PVP. The values of K _b were also found to be increased with increasing temperatures as well as with the increase of electrolyte/acetic acid concentration. The Gibbs free energy of binding (∆G ⁰) values of the interaction process was negative which indicates the complex formation is thermodynamically spontaneous. The positive values of enthalpy (∆H ⁰) and entropy (∆S ⁰) of binding connote that the binding force for CFH-PVP complexation is hydrophobic in nature and the complexation is entropy controlled. The negative intrinsic enthalpy (∆H ^*,0) values indicate the high stability of CFH-PVP complexes. Molecular docking calculation discloses the existence of similar binding forces between CFH and PVP obtained by the analysis of experimental data from UV-visible spectroscopic method. The binding constant between CFH and BSA (K _b ), quenching constant (K _sv ), the number of binding sites (n), and the quenching rate constant (K _q ) for the CFH-BSA system were also calculated. The values of K _sv , K _q , and n for the CFH-BSA system are lower in 0.05 mol L^-1 urea solution and higher in PVP solutions compared to those of aqueous medium.

Physicochemical Studies on the Interaction between Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Methylene Blue in Methanol-Water Mixed Solvent Media

The surface activity and the process of micellization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with methylene blue (MB) in a methanol-water mixed solvent system were investigated by tensiometry and conductometry at 298.15 K. The measurements of surface tension and conductivity of SDS-MB complex were carried up to 0.3 volume fractions of methanol because the resulting complex appeared turbid above 0.3 volume fractions of methanol. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the SDS was determined from both tensiometry and conductometry. The CMC of SDS increased with the increasing volume fraction of methanol due to the inclusion of methanol in the micelles and decreased in the presence of methylene blue due to the reduction of electrostatic repulsion within the anionic moiety of SDS by the positive charge of the added dye. Different properties like surface excess concentration $\left({\mathrm{\Gamma }}_{\max }\right)$ , minimum surface area $\left(A_{\text{min}}\right)$ , Gibbs free energy of micellization $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o\right)$ , surface pressure ( ${\pi }_{\text{CMC}}$ ), efficiency of a surfactant ( $\text{p}{C}_{20}$ ), packing parameter $\left(P\right)$ , and standard free energy interfacial adsorption $\left(\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\text{ads}}^o\right)$ of SDS in the absence/presence of MB were calculated. On the basis of $\mathrm{\Delta }{G}_{\mathrm{m}}^o$ values, it was noticed that the increasing volume fraction of methanol disfavors the micellization of SDS, while the presence of MB increased the efficiency of SDS making the micellization process more spontaneous.
