Reduction of Sb(V) by coupled biotic-abiotic processes under sulfidogenic conditions

Reaction pathways and Sb(III) minerals formation during the reduction of Sb(V) by Rhodoferax ferrireducens strain YZ-1

Antimony (Sb), a non-essential metalloid, can be released into the environment through various industrial activities. Sb(III) is considered more toxic than Sb(V), but Sb(III) can be immobilized through the precipitation of insoluble Sb2S3 or Sb2O3. In the subsurface, Sb redox chemistry is largely controlled by microorganisms; however, the exact mechanisms of Sb(V) reduction to Sb(III) are still unclear. In this study, a new strain of Sb(V)-reducing bacterium, designated as strain YZ-1, that can respire Sb(V) as a terminal electron acceptor was isolated from Sb-contaminated soils. 16S-rRNA gene sequencing of YZ-1 revealed high similarity to a known Fe(III)-reducer, Rhodoferax ferrireducens. XRD and XAFS analyses revealed that bioreduction of Sb(V) to Sb(III) proceed through a transition from amorphous valentinite to crystalline senarmontite (allotropes of Sb2O3). Genomic DNA sequencing found that YZ-1 possesses arsenic (As) metabolism genes, including As(V) reductase arsC. The qPCR analysis showed that arsC was highly expressed during Sb(V)-reduction by YZ-1, and thus is proposed as the potential Sb(V) reductase in YZ-1. This study provides new insight into the pathways and products of microbial Sb(V) reduction and demonstrates the potential of a newly isolated bacterium for Sb bioremediation.

Biogeochemical cycling in paddy soils controls antimony transformation: Roles of iron (oxyhydr)oxides, organic matter and sulfate

In paddy fields, periodic flooding and drainage phases can significantly affect the availability of antimony (Sb), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, Sb-contaminated paddy soil was incubated under anaerobic (40 day) and subsequently aerobic (40-55 day) conditions. The Sb fractions was investigated and a kinetic model was established to quantitatively evaluate the main processes controlling Sb transformation. Under anaerobic conditions, the reductive dissolution of iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxides, the release of soil colloids, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) could facilitate the release of Sb(V), while newly released Sb(V) were synchronously reduced to Sb(III) that could be incorporated into the solid phase (34.1%, 40 day) or precipitated as Sb2S3 (9.7%, 40 day). After soil aeration, a significant increase in dissolved and extracted Sb(V) (34.7%, 45 day) was observed due to the Sb(III) oxidization by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from Fe(II) oxidization. The dissolved and extracted Sb(V) were simultaneously incorporated into the solid phase as the re-aggregation of soil colloids and DOC, and only contributed to 17.1% of the total Sb content at the end of aerobic phase (55 day). Our results elucidated the mechanisms about how biogeochemical Fe/S/C cycling jointly controlled Sb transformation in paddy systems.

Community ecological study on the reduction of soil antimony bioavailability by SRB-based remediation technologies

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were effective in stabilizing Sb. However, the influence of electron donors and acceptors during SRB remediation, as well as the ecological principles involved, remained unclear. In this study, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 7757 was utilized to stabilize soil Sb within microcosm. Humic acid (HA) or sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) were employed to enhance SRB capacity. The SRB+HA treatment exhibited the highest Sb stabilization rate, achieving 58.40%. Bacterial community analysis revealed that SRB altered soil bacterial diversity, community composition, and assembly processes, with homogeneous selection as the predominant assembly processes. When HA and Na2SO4 significantly modified the stimulated microbial community succession trajectories, shaped the taxonomic composition and interactions of the bacterial community, they showed converse effect in shaping bacterial community which were both helpful for promoting dissimilatory sulfate reduction. Na2SO4 facilitated SRB-mediated anaerobic reduction and promoted interactions between SRB and bacteria involved in nitrogen and sulfur cycling. The HA stimulated electron generation and storage, and enhanced the interactions between SRB and bacteria possessing heavy metal tolerance or carbohydrate degradation capabilities.

Antimony redox processes in the environment: A critical review of associated oxidants and reductants

The environmental behavior of antimony (Sb) has recently received greater attention due to the increasing global use of Sb in a range of industrial applications. Although present at trace levels in most natural systems, elevated Sb concentrations in aquatic and terrestrial environments may result from anthropogenic activities. The mobility and toxicity of Sb largely depend on its speciation, which is dependent to a large extent on its oxidation state. To a certain extent, our understanding of the environmental behavior of Sb has been informed by studies of the environmental behavior of arsenic (As), as Sb and As have somewhat similar chemical properties. However, recently it has become evident that the speciation of Sb and As, especially in the context of redox reactions, may be fundamentally different. Therefore, it is crucial to study the biogeochemical processes impacting Sb redox transformations to understand the behavior of Sb in natural and engineered environments. Currently, there is a growing body of literature involving the speciation, mobility, toxicity, and remediation of Sb, and several reviews on these general topics are available; however, a comprehensive review focused on Sb environmental redox chemistry is lacking. This paper provides a review of research conducted within the past two decades examining the redox chemistry of Sb in aquatic and terrestrial environments and identifies knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to develop a better understanding of Sb biogeochemistry for improved management of Sb in natural and engineered systems.

Reduction of Vanadium(V) by Iron(II)-Bearing Minerals

Fe(II)-bearing minerals (magnetite, siderite, green rust, etc.) are common products of microbial Fe(III) reduction, and they provide a reservoir of reducing capacity in many subsurface environments that may contribute to the reduction of redox active elements such as vanadium; which can exist as V(V), V(IV), and V(III) under conditions typical of near-surface aquatic and terrestrial environments. To better understand the redox behavior of V under ferrugenic/sulfidogenic conditions, we examined the interactions of V(V) (1 mM) in aqueous suspensions containing 50 mM Fe(II) as magnetite, siderite, vivianite, green rust, or mackinawite, using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V K-edge to determine the valence state of V. Two additional systems of increased complexity were also examined, containing either 60 mM Fe(II) as biogenic green rust (BioGR) or 40 mM Fe(II) as a mixture of biogenic siderite, mackinawite, and magnetite (BioSMM). Within 48 h, total solution-phase V concentrations decreased to <20 µM in all but the vivianite and the biogenic BiSMM systems; however, >99.5% of V was removed from solution in the BioSMM and vivianite systems within 7 and 20 months, respectively. The most rapid reduction was observed in the mackinawite system, where V(V) was reduced to V(III) within 48 h. Complete reduction of V(V) to V(III) occurred within 4 months in the green rust system, 7 months in the siderite system, and 20 months in the BioGR system. Vanadium(V) was only partially reduced in the magnetite, vivianite, and BioSMM systems, where within 7 months the average V valence state stabilized at 3.7, 3.7, and 3.4, respectively. The reduction of V(V) in soils and sediments has been largely attributed to microbial activity, presumably involving direct enzymatic reduction of V(V); however the reduction of V(V) by Fe(II)-bearing minerals suggests that abiotic or coupled biotic–abiotic processes may also play a critical role in V redox chemistry, and thus need to be considered in modeling the global biogeochemical cycling of V.
