Effects of various beverages on characteristics of provisional restoration materials

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of common beverages on four currently used provisional restoration materials: Protemp®4, Integrity®, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) block, and acrylic resin. Flowable resin composite is included as a control group.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Each material was formed into disks of 10-mm diameter and 4-mm thickness (N = 40) by loading the material into acrylic molds. The exposed surface in the mold was covered using a glass slide to prevent an oxygen inhibition layer, and polymerization then proceeded. The solidified disks were placed in distilled water for 24 h. These samples (n = 8) were then immersed for 14 days in one of four different beverages: water, orange juice, cola, and coffee. Changes in color dimension, hardness, and roughness were observed and then analyzed using two-way repeated analysis of variance.

RESULTS

The provisional materials had more obvious changes in all three color dimensions than the flowable resin composite. Integrity showed the biggest changes, followed by acrylic resin and PMMA block, whereas Protemp had the smallest changes. The hardness of all the materials significantly decreased after immersion in any of the beverages for 14 days. There were no changes in surface roughness when the materials were immersed in distilled water. The surface roughness of the PMMA block significantly decreased in orange juice whereas that of Integrity and acrylic resin significantly increased in cola.

CONCLUSION

Different kinds of provisional materials had different degrees of staining due to their composition. Moisture had a significant influence on the hardness of materials, and the acidity of cola significantly roughened the surface of the provisional materials.

Hardness and surface roughness of differently processed denture base acrylic resins after immersion in simulated gastric acid

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The effect of gastric acid on the surface properties of denture base acrylic resin is unknown.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate changes in the surface roughness and hardness of denture base acrylic resins after immersion in simulated gastric acid.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Acrylic resin specimens (n=10) were prepared with 3 different processing techniques (compression-molded, injection-molded, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing [CAD-CAM] milled) and exposed to either gastric acid or artificial saliva (control). Surface roughness and hardness were measured at baseline (T0) and after 24-hour (T24) and 96-hour (T96) immersion in the solutions. The surface roughness and hardness data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

At T24, the greatest change in surface hardness was observed for compression-molded specimens in gastric acid (P<.05). At T96, changes in hardness values were higher in compression-molded specimens than those in milled specimens (P<.05). Regarding surface roughness, at T24, compression-molded and injection-molded specimens showed higher values than milled specimens in gastric acid (P<.05). Concerning specimens in artificial saliva, compression-molded specimens showed significantly higher changes in roughness than those of the others (P<.05). At T96, injection-molded specimens had the greatest roughness values (P<.05). Among specimens immersed in artificial saliva, milled specimens showed lower roughness values than the injection-molded or compression-molded specimens (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Gastric acid exposure adversely affected the roughness and hardness of all the acrylic resins evaluated. CAD-CAM milled specimens showed better resistance to acid exposure after 24 and 96 hours in terms of roughness and hardness.

Structural Changes in Resin-Based Composites in Saliva of Patients with Leukemia before Starting Chemotherapeutic Regimen

Background: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the morphological characteristics and stability of dental composites immersed in saliva collected from patients with leukemia. Material and Methods: A total number of five patients without systemic disease and 20 patients with leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)) were included for saliva sampling. Composite disks were immersed in the leukemia, control, and artificial environments for 7 days. At the end of the experiment, atomic force microscopy (AFM), color stability (ΔE), and saliva elements analysis were performed. Statistical significance was considered for a p-value under 0.05. Results: The most changed surface resulted for ALL with a roughness that was almost double that of the untreated sample and was significantly increased compared to the healthy saliva. The effect of CLL was not as intense as observed for acute leukemia, but was significantly over the control. ALL seemed to modify structural components of the saliva, which were able to deteriorate the surface of the composite. ALL saliva promoted a significant dissolution of the initial feature of the samples and promoted nano-particle clusterization. All dental composites showed clinically acceptable color change values (ΔE < 3.3) in all four-leukemia salivas; CLL and CML showed large color differences for all composites. The total concentrations of P, Na, and K showed wide ranges of variations, while the coefficient of variation in Fe, Cu, and Mg showed narrow variations between the salvias’ investigated. The salivary concentration of zinc decreased considerably in the CLL and CML environments compared to the ALL and AML environments. Fe and Cu were significantly increased in the CML environment. Conclusions: Control and artificial salivas have a mild erosive effect on the surface of dental composites. The acute stage of the disease seems to deteriorate the surface roughness rather than its morphology, however, in the chronic stage, it is the surface morphology that mostly deteriorates.

Polymerization Shrinkage, Hygroscopic Expansion, Elastic Modulus and Degree of Conversion of Different Composites for Dental Application

Objectives: To characterize the mechanical properties of different resin-composites for dental application. Methods: Thirteen universal dentin shade composites (n = 10) from different manufacturers were evaluated (4 Seasons, Grandio, Venus, Amelogen Plus, P90, Z350, Esthet-X, Amaris, Vita-l-escence, Natural-Look, Charisma, Z250 and Opallis). The polymerization shrinkage percentage was calculated using a video-image recording device (ACUVOL—Bisco Dental) and the hygroscopic expansion was measured after thermocycling aging in the same equipment. Equal volumes of material were used and, after 5 min of relaxation, baseline measurements were calculated with 18 J of energy delivered from the light-curing unit. Specimens were stored in a dry-dark environment for 24 h then thermocycled in distilled water (5–55 °C for 20,000 cycles) with volume measurement at each 5000 cycles. In addition, the pulse-excitatory method was applied to calculate the elastic modulus and Poisson ratio for each resin material and the degree of conversion was evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results: The ANOVA showed that all composite volumes were influenced by the number of cycles (α = 0.05). Volumes at 5 min post-polymerization (12.47 ± 0.08 cm3) were significantly lower than those at baseline (12.80 ± 0.09 cm3). With regard to the impact of aging, all resin materials showed a statistically significant increase in volume after 5000 cycles (13.04 ± 0.22 cm3). There was no statistical difference between volumes measured at the other cycle steps. The elastic modulus ranged from 22.15 to 10.06 GPa and the Poisson ratio from 0.54 to 0.22 with a significant difference between the evaluated materials (α = 0.05). The degree of conversion was higher than 60% for all evaluated resin composites.
