Estimation of the return periods of maxima rainfall and floods at the Pra River Catchment, Ghana, West Africa using the Gumbel extreme value theory

Estimation of return dates and return levels of extreme rainfall in the city of Douala, Cameroon

The problem of extreme phenomena with a more precise estimation of their return periods for early warnings, notably to preserve the safety of populations and properties, arises all over the world. This work develops another aspect in the estimation of Return Levels (RLs) and Return Periods (RPs) of extreme precipitation in particular and natural risk in general. In particular, it gives the Return Dates (RDs) with their Confidence Intervals (CIs). The RPs, the RLs and their CIs for extreme rainfall were also investigated. These estimates were made by approaching the peak over a threshold chosen by the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD). The CIs of RPs and RLs were determined by the Delta method. The daily rainfall data used were obtained from the data of the synoptic report for the period 2011 to 2021 for the Douala weather station (more details can be found on http://www.ogimet.com/guia.phtml.en). To validate the methods used, real cases of floods occurred in Douala city were considered: for example, a local press compiled flood dates and mentioned that a flood occurred on the April 16, 2013 in this city. Following the data of synoptic report, the corresponding amount of rainfall was around 150 mm. The results obtained have shown a RD on the August 12, 2014. The confidence intervals of return levels and return dates determined by the Delta method were [131.66, 168.456] and [June 23, 2014, January 02, 2015], respectively. These results are in agreement with the data of synoptic report since the rainfall amounts was 132.2 mm (belonging to the confidence interval of return levels), on the August 11, 2014 (belonging to the confidence interval of return dates). These predictions of RDs and RLs with their CIs, at reasonable time scales, can help for efficient management of floods and thus, improve early warnings for safety of populations and goods.

Rainfall analysis and deriving design storm for hydrological modelling of Koyna dam catchment area in Maharashtra state of India

Rainfall is a key hydro meteorological variable. Climate change is disrupting the hydrological cycle and altering the usual cycle of rainfall, which frequently results in long-lasting storms with significant rainfall. A first step in hydrologic design of project is to determine the design storm or rainfall events to be used. For deriving design storm, researchers concluded that instead of using generalized readily available curves or maps, it is better to estimate design storm based on site specific historical rainfall data. The objective of the study is to analyze the rainfall data in the koyna watershed area in order to evaluate the design storm, which will be further used as an input data for HEC-HMS event based hydrological modelling of flood peak attenuation of design storm flow at koyna dam during extreme rainfall event. In this study, 40 years (1982-2021) of rainfall data from 8 rain gauge stations in Koyna Dam Catchment area is used initially for performing trend analysis through statistical and graphical techniques and then for Isopluvial analysis. The Sen's slope test and the Mann-Kendall test are the statistical techniques employed, and Innovative Trend Analysis is the graphical technique used. IDF approach is used for deriving design storm, and using Gumbel's frequency distribution method Isohyetal maps, IDF tables and curves are prepared for 2,10,25,50,75 and 100 year return periods and 6,12,24,48 and 96 h durations. Results obtained from statistical and graphical trend analysis of annual rainfall series are consistent. No statistically significant trend in annual rainfall series is observed, however there is rising and falling trend was observed in annual as well as monthly rainfall series. From the results of design storm study, the design storm hyetograph of 10 years return period and 96 h duration is selected, which gives the rainfall intensity of 10.88 mm/h for the koyna catchment. There are various dams nearby koyna catchment, The Isohyet maps, IDF curves and table output available from this study can be more reliably used during planning and design of hydraulic structure for other areas near by koyna catchment.

Potential Flood Risk in the City of Guasave, Sinaloa, the Effects of Population Growth, and Modifications to the Topographic Relief

The coastal city of Guasave, Sinaloa, located on the Mexican Pacific coast, is subject to extreme precipitation events, which have caused flooding with damage to the city’s infrastructure. The factors that influence flooding are vegetation, geology, degree of soil saturation, drainage characteristics of the watershed, and the shape of the topographic relief. Of the above factors, the topographic relief, which is the subject of the study, has been partially modified in some areas by infrastructure works (from 20.2 m to 17.6 m), and the population of the urban area has grown by 51.8% in 17 years (2004–2021); therefore, the objective is to evaluate the potential flood risk due to changes in this factor and the growth of the urban area. When using this method, the potential flood risk was determined considering four extreme events, 1982, 1990, 1998, and 2019. It was found that the potential risk increases for the whole city, being more intense in sector III, which, before the modification of the topographic relief, was the area with the lowest risk of flooding. In an extreme event such as Hurricane Paul in 1982, practically the entire city would be flooded.
