Factors affecting students' perception of flipped learning over time in a teacher training program

The flipped learning methodology could play a key role in teacher training, as it exposes future teachers to experience this active methodology as students. With the purpose of shedding light on how students' perceptions may vary over time and how they can be related to the improvement of the flipped learning methodology, our study explores different factors in an eight-year period. Specifically, we analyse teaching performance considering data on students' perceptions from the 2015-2016 academic year to 2022-2023 of a course embedded within a master s degree in teacher training in Spain. Once future teachers had experienced flipped learning as students, a sample of 338 completed a survey regarding their perceptions of the flipped classroom approach and the instructor role. In our study, the more experienced the instructor, the better perception the students showed on both the flipped learning methodology and the performance of their teacher. In particular, we found that future teachers had (i) a good or very good opinion about flipped learning, regardless of their gender (ii) a more positive perception about flipped learning, teaching performance and course development in the last five academic years, (iii) no remarkable differences between study specialisations in those last academic years, and (iv) a better opinion about the flipped learning model when they have best grades. We discuss our findings according to six factors that affect the flipped learning experience and, thus, students' perception of flipped learning over time: "student characteristics", "teacher characteristics", "implementation", "task characteristics", "out-of-class activities" and "in-class activities"-factors already unveiled by a recent state-of-the-art review to enhance the effectiveness of flipped classroom. We can conclude that the instructor's teaching experience is a key factor that affects the implementation of flipped learning, influencing students' perception and, consequently, the success of this active methodology.

Influence of two educational Escape Room- Breakout tools in PSTs' affective and cognitive domain in STEM (science and mathematics) courses

During the last decade, there has been a strong emphasis on developing new instruction methodologies for the effective teaching of different contents. Here, it is important to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, specially, in scientific and mathematical concepts. In the context of active learning and gamification, educational Escape Room - Breakout (ERB) could be a useful strategy to improve students' affective and cognitive domain towards STEM (science and mathematics). Thus, two didactic tools, based on an ERB, have been designed to teach science and mathematics contents. This research compares the influence of two ERBs (Science ERB and Mathematics ERB) in Pre-Service Teachers' (PSTs) affective domain (emotions, attitudes, and self-efficacy towards STEM) and cognitive domain (performance). Non-parametric statistical tests were used, the Mann-Whitney U test was applied to measure significant differences between the variables in the two ERBs. Spearman correlation coefficient was implemented to measure the correlations between the study variables. The results show that there is a significant increase in positive emotions in both ERBs. The emotions "joy", "fun", and "nervousness" are significantly higher after the Science ERB, and the emotion "fear" is lower with respect to the Mathematics ERB. In the self-efficacy and attitudes analysis, a significant increase of 8 items of the questionnaire is observed in the Mathematics ERB with respect to the Science ERB. According to performance analysis, PST grades have been increased after each ERB. Finally, the correlation analysis between variables indicates that positive emotions, high self-efficacy, and positive attitudes increase the PSTs' performance. Here, high values of these variables are related to high values on the theoretical content test after both ERBs. According to these results, the two ERBs used could have several advantages in the PSTs' affective and cognitive domain.

Activity theory as a framework for teaching mathematics: An experimental study

This article introduces activity theory and how it can be employed to instruct the topic of straight-line equations in a plane - Geometry 10. Using the activity theory approach, we studied and developed a teaching process. The procedure is divided into three stages: Phase 1: Motivation and goal orientation, in which teachers present situations to attract students to the lesson; Phase 2: Knowledge formation, in which students engage in a variety of learning activities to build the knowledge they need to learn; Phase 3: Practice and consolidation, in which many exercises are assigned to students to solve in order to consolidate their knowledge and assist teachers in detecting and correcting students' misconceptions. To examine the effectiveness of applying the proposed three-phase model, we used a two-group pretest-posttest experimental model to determine whether or not teaching with the activity theory approach is more effective than the traditional teaching method by testing four research hypotheses. The experimental teaching took place in the Mo Cay district of Ben Tre province, Vietnam. Both the experimental and control classes began with the same level of mathematics, which was then tested using inferential statistics. After completing the pedagogical experiment, we discovered that students in the experimental class who were taught using activity theory achieved better learning outcomes than students in the control class, who were taught using the traditional teaching method; in the experimental class, the number of weak students decreased in comparison to the original; however, the number of good students did not increase. This is an issue that requires further studies to find ways to influence a wide range of students with different levels of mathematics so that the effectiveness of teaching according to the activity theory approach is improved.
