Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to explore the effect of depression on pain, disease activity, functional disability and health-related quality of life measured by Visual Analogue Scale, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index, Health Assessment Questionnaire and Short Form-36 in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. DESIGN Meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched for obtaining available studies from inception to 7 March 2023. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Studies evaluating the impact of depression on pain, disease activity, functional disability and quality of life were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Two authors independently screened publications and extracted data according to set inclusion and exclusion criteria. Statistical analyses were conducted with RevMan V.5.3.0. Data were pooled using a fixed-effects or random-effects model according to heterogeneity. RESULTS A total of 13 identified studies met the inclusion criteria, reporting on a total of 1911 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The Visual Analogue Scale score was significantly higher in patients with depression than those without depression (standardised mean difference (SMD)=0.84 (95% CI 0.27 to 1.42), p=0.004). The Health Assessment Questionnaire score was significantly higher in patients with depression than those without depression (SMD=1.05 (95% CI 0.14 to 1.95), p<0.05). The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index score was significantly higher in patients with depression than those without depression (SMD=0.46 (95% CI 0.27 to 0.64), p<0.00001). Scores in most Short Form-36 dimensions (physical function, role physical function, emotional role function, vitality, mental health, social function, general health, physical component scale, mental component scale) were lower in patients with depression than those without depression. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis showed that depression was associated with increased in pain, functional disability and disease activity, and decline in health-related quality of life in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Awareness of the importance of the relationship between depression in systemic lupus erythematosus patients and pain, functional disability and the quality of life might assist rheumatology physicians and nurses in assessing and preventing these symptoms. Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB), the world's deadliest bacterial infection, afflicts more human males than females, with a male/female (M/F) ratio of 1.7. Sex disparities in TB prevalence, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations are widely reported, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain largely undefined. This review assesses epidemiological data on sex disparity in TB, as well as possible underlying hormonal and genetic mechanisms that might differentially modulate innate and adaptive immune responses in males and females, leading to sex differences in disease susceptibility. We consider whether this sex disparity can be extended to the efficacy of vaccines and discuss novel animal models which may offer mechanistic insights. A better understanding of the biological factors underpinning sex-related immune responses in TB may enable sex-specific personalized therapies for TB.

Abstract
Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs), which are generated from the plasma membrane during platelet activation, may be involved in the inflammatory processes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The motility of RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLS) plays a key role in the development of synovial inflammation and joint erosion. However, the effects of PEVs on the motility of RA-FLS remain unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the active contents and potential molecular mechanisms underlying the role of PEVs in regulating the migration and invasion of RA-FLS. The results demonstrated that PEVs contain certain chemokines associated with cell migration and invasion, including C-C motif chemokine ligand 5, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL)4 and CXCL7. Furthermore, SB225002, an antagonist of C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CXCR2; a CXCL7 receptor), partially prevented the migration and invasion of RA-FLS induced by PEVs, suggesting that PEVs may activate a CXCR2-mediated signaling pathway in RA-FLS. In addition, SB225002 antagonized the phosphorylation of IκB and NF-κB in RA-FLS induced by PEVs. Taken together, the results of the present study suggested that PEVs may promote the migration and invasion of RA-FLS by activating the NF-κB pathway mediated by the CXCR2 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Objective Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) predominantly affects women, but previous studies suggest that men with SLE present a more severe disease phenotype. In this study, we investigated a large and well-characterized patient group with the aim of identifying sex differences in disease manifestations, with a special focus on renal involvement. Methods We studied a Swedish multi-center SLE cohort including 1226 patients (1060 women and 166 men) with a mean follow-up time of 15.8 ± 13.4 years. Demographic data, disease manifestations including ACR criteria, serology and renal histopathology were investigated. Renal outcome and mortality were analyzed in subcohorts. Results Female SLE patients presented more often with malar rash (p < 0.0001), photosensitivity (p < 0.0001), oral ulcers (p = 0.01), and arthritis (p = 0.007). Male patients on the other hand presented more often with serositis (p = 0.0003), renal disorder (p < 0.0001), and immunologic disorder (p = 0.04) by the ACR definitions. With regard to renal involvement, women were diagnosed with nephritis at an earlier age (p = 0.006), while men with SLE had an overall higher risk for progression into end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with a hazard ratio (HR) of 5.1 (95% CI, 2.1–12.5). The mortality rate among men with SLE and nephritis compared with women was HR 1.7 (95% CI, 0.8–3.8). Conclusion SLE shows significant sex-specific features, whereby men are affected by a more severe disease with regard to both renal and extra-renal manifestations. Additionally, men are at a higher risk of developing ESRD which may require an increased awareness and monitoring in clinical practice.

Abstract
The minisequencing technique offers accuracy and robustness to genotyping of polymorphic DNA variants, being an excellent option for the identification and analyses of prognostic/susceptibility markers in human diseases. Two multiplex minisequencing assays were designed and standardized to screen 23 candidate SNPs in cytokine, chemokine receptor and ligand genes previously associated with susceptibility to cancer and autoimmune disorders as well as to infectious diseases outcome. The SNPs were displayed in two separate panels (panel 1-IL2 rs2069762, TNFα rs1800629, rs361525; IL4 rs2243250; IL6 rs1800795; IL10 rs1800896, rs1800872; IL17A rs8193036, rs2275913 and panel 2-CCR3 rs309125, CCR4 rs6770096, rs2228428; CCR6 rs968334; CCR8 rs2853699; CXCR3 rs34334103, rs2280964;CXCR6 rs223435, rs2234358; CCL20 rs13034664, rs6749704; CCL22 rs4359426; CXCL10/IP-10 rs3921, rs56061981). A total of 305 DNA samples from healthy individuals were genotyped by minisequencing. To validate the minisequencing technique and to encompass the majority of the potential genotypes for all 23 SNPs, 20 of these samples were genotyped by Sanger sequencing. The results of both techniques were 100% in agreement. The technique of minisequencing showed high accuracy and robustness, avoiding the need for high quantities of DNA template samples. It was easily to be conducted in bulk samples derived from a highly admixed human population, being therefore an excellent option for immunogenetic studies.
