Enhanced Maximal Upper-Body Strength Increases Performance in Sprint Kayaking

Therefore, the aim of study 1 was to investigate the relationship between upper-body strength and kayaking performance. In study 2, the aim was to perform a randomized training intervention to investigate whether a causal relationship was present between an increase in strength and an actual change in 200-m kayaking performance. In study 1, 37 (22 men and 15 women) elite kayak paddlers performed tests of maximal power output, isometric force, 1 repetition maximum (1RM), and 40 seconds of maximal repetition number in bench press and bench pull and a 30-second all-out on-water sprint kayak test. In study 2, 26 (16 men and 10 women) national elite junior A, U23, and senior kayak paddlers were allocated into 2 groups: a training group (TRAIN) and a maintenance group (MAIN). Each group completed a 6-week strength training intervention with the purpose of either increasing 1RM in bench press (TRAIN) or maintaining strength (MAIN). Pre- and posttests were performed in 200-m kayak ergometer sprint, 1RM bench press, and 1RM bench pull. In study 1, 1RM in bench press was the best predictor of 30-second on-water kayaking performance with a regression coefficient of 0.474. In study 2, TRAIN significantly increased 1RM strength in bench press (pre: 87.3 ± 21.2 kg, post: 93.9 ± 21.3 kg, p = 0.001) and bench pull (pre: 84.2 ± 15.3 kg, post: 86.0 ± 15.1 kg, p = 0.025). In the 200-m kayak ergometer sprint test, TRAIN significantly decreased the time to complete the test (pre: 44.8 ± 4.3 seconds, post: 44.3 ± 4.3 seconds, p = 0.042). In bench press, 1RM was the best predictor of 200-m kayaking, and an increase in bench press 1RM resulted in increased kayaking performance.

A Coupled Biomechanical-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Model for Horse Racing Tracks

Distal limb injuries are common in racing horses and track surface properties have been associated with injury risk. To better understand how track surfaces may contribute to equine limb injury, we developed the first 3D computational model of the equine hoof interacting with a racetrack and simulated interactions with model representations of 1) a dirt surface and 2) an all-weather synthetic track. First, a computational track model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method with a Drucker-Prager (D-P) elastoplastic material model was developed. It was validated against analytical models and published data and then calibrated using results of a custom track testing device applied to the two racetrack types. Second, a sensitivity analysis was performed to determine which model parameters contribute most significantly to the mechanical response of the track under impact-type loading. Third, the SPH track model was coupled to a biomechanical model of the horse forelimb and applied to hoof-track impact for a horse galloping on each track surface. We found that 1) the SPH track model was well validated and it could be calibrated to accurately represent impact loading of racetrack surfaces at two angles of impact; 2) the amount of harrowing applied to the track had the largest effect on impact loading, followed by elastic modulus and cohesion; 3) the model is able to accurately simulate hoof-ground interaction and enables study of the relationship between track surface parameters and the loading on horses’ distal forelimbs.

Validation of a global positioning system with accelerometer for canoe/kayak sprint kinematic analysis

This study aimed to validate the use of a Global Positioning System with an accelerometer (GPS-Acc) unit to quantify canoeing kinematic variables. Eight canoe and kayak (200 and 500 m) sprint races were analysed. All the races were recorded sideways by a digital camera that followed the kayak or canoe bow and simultaneously using a GPS-Acc unit recorded the data concerning boat position, velocity, and acceleration. In 200 m races, 50 m splits were established over the entire race distance. In 500 m races, 100 m splits were used, excepting the race start and end, where the splits were divided into two sections of 50 m. The data of the GPS-Acc unit were analysed using a self-developed routine. The agreement between the video and the GPS-Acc analysis was measured regarding all the variables by a Bland-Altman analysis. No differences were found between both methodologies, except for time and velocity at the first 50 m, suggesting thus an agreement between the analysis methods. The GPS-Acc unit is valid for measuring quickly and accurately kinematic variables, mainly boat velocity and stroke rate. However, video analyses may be necessary when a more detailed analysis of the paddling technique is of interest.

Fluid-Structure Interaction Analyses of Biological Systems Using Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics

Due to the inherent complexity of biological applications that more often than not include fluids and structures interacting together, the development of computational fluid-structure interaction models is necessary to achieve a quantitative understanding of their structure and function in both health and disease. The functions of biological structures usually include their interactions with the surrounding fluids. Hence, we contend that the use of fluid-structure interaction models in computational studies of biological systems is practical, if not necessary. The ultimate goal is to develop computational models to predict human biological processes. These models are meant to guide us through the multitude of possible diseases affecting our organs and lead to more effective methods for disease diagnosis, risk stratification, and therapy. This review paper summarizes computational models that use smoothed-particle hydrodynamics to simulate the fluid-structure interactions in complex biological systems.
