Is gait-based visual regulation identical to gaze-based visual regulation in inexperienced athletes' long jump run-ups?

Jumping with control: the interplay between psychological constructs and run-up variability in elite jumpers

Objectives

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological aspects (emotional regulation, self-control, mood states, and perceived stress) and components of run-up variability in horizontal jumps and to conduct comparisons based on sex, events (long jump and triple jump), and contextual situations (training versus competition).

Methods

A total of 10 elite-level athletes (five males and five females) with a mean age of 27.14 (±4.25) years were recruited for the study. All participants had competed nationally or internationally and had 13.10 (±3.48) years of athletic experience. Data were collected during competitions and training sessions for 5 weeks. The participants completed the Brunel Mood Scale, Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, Brief Self-Control Scale, and Visual Analogical Scale of Perceived Stress before each session. The components of run-up variability of successful and failed attempts were measured using video analysis. Data were analyzed using a t-test, Pearson's correlation, and Cohen's d.

Results

Athletes specializing in long jump and triple jump displayed similar psychological and run-up variability characteristics. However, females showed higher values for tension and depression, whereas males had higher run-up speeds and vigor. In competitions, athletes tended to have higher vigor, lower fatigue and confusion, an earlier beginning of the adjustment phase, fewer failed attempts, and higher run-up speed than during training. Emotional regulation is inversely related to depression in women during competitions, whereas higher self-control is associated with fewer failed jumps.

Conclusion

Athletes competing in the long jump and the triple jump do not differ in psychological traits and run-up characteristics, which suggests that similar training strategies can be used in both events. However, different solutions should be used considering the sex of athletes, with a particular focus on utilizing emotion regulation tools to modulate depression in female jumpers. It is recommended to include training sessions that simulate competition demands, primarily to ensure the early onset of the run-up adjustment phase.

Evaluating the integration of eye-tracking and motion capture technologies: Quantifying the accuracy and precision of gaze measures

Integrating mobile eye tracking and optoelectronic motion capture enables point of gaze to be expressed within the laboratory co-ordinate system and presents a method not commonly applied during research examining dynamic behaviors, such as locomotion. This paper examines the quality of gaze data collected through the integration. Based on research suggesting increased viewing distances are associated with reduced data quality; the accuracy and precision of gaze data as participants (N = 11) viewed floor-based targets at distances of 1–6 m was investigated. A mean accuracy of 2.55 ± 1.12° was identified, however, accuracy and precision measures (relative to targets) were significantly (p < .05) reduced at greater viewing distances. We then consider if signal processing techniques may improve accuracy and precision, and overcome issues associated with missing data. A 4th-order Butterworth lowpass filter with cut-off frequencies determined via autocorrelation did not significantly improve data quality, however, interpolation via Quintic spline was sufficient to overcome gaps of up to 0.1 s. We conclude the integration of gaze and motion capture presents a viable methodology in the study of human behavior and presents advantages for data collection, treatment, and analysis. We provide considerations for the collection, analysis, and treatment of gaze data that may help inform future methodological decisions.

Effects of auditory feedback on gait behavior, gaze patterns and outcome performance in long jumping

In the current study, we conducted two experiments to investigate the impact of concurrent, action-induced auditory feedback on gait patterns, gaze behavior and outcome performance in long jumping. In Experiment 1, we examined the effects of present vs. absent auditory feedback on gait, gaze and performance outcome measures. Results revealed a significant interaction effect between condition (present vs. absent auditory feedback) and phase (acceleration vs. zeroing-in phase) on participants' step lengths indicating that the absence (rather than the presence) of auditory feedback led to facilitatory effects in terms of a more prototypical gait pattern (i.e., shorter steps in the acceleration phase and longer steps in the zeroing-in phase). Similarly, the absent auditory feedback led to a higher gaze stability in terms of less switches between areas of interest (AOIs). However, there was no effect on jumped distance. In Experiment 2, we scrutinized the influence of concurrent vs. delayed auditory feedback on all three performance parameters. In contrast to concurrent feedback, delayed auditory feedback negatively affected all three measures: participants showed (i) dysfunctional deviations from their prototypical gait pattern (i.e., shorter steps across both phases of the run-up), (ii) less stable, maladaptive gaze patterns (i.e., more switches between AOIs) and (iii) poorer jumping performance (i.e., shorter jumped distances). Together, the two experiments provide clear evidence for the impact of concurrent, action-induced auditory feedback on the coordination of complex, rhythmical motor tasks such as the long jump.
