Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study aims to evaluate maxillary sinus volume in asthmatic patients. METHODS Patients who applied to the faculty of dentistry between January 2014 and December 2023 were retrospectively screened. Cone beam computed tomography images of 312 maxillary sinuses (156 people) consisting of asthmatic patients and controls were included in the study. Radiographic images in the study were obtained with a Newtom 5 G (FP, Quantitative Radiology, Verona, Italy) cone beam computed tomography device. SimPlant Pro 16 program (Materialise NV, Leuven, Belgium) measured maxillary sinus volumes. SPSS 25.0 software (IBM SPSS, Inc.) was used to analyze statistical data. RESULTS As a result of the tests, the right and left maxillary sinus volumes of asthmatic patients were significantly smaller than the control group. No significant relationship was found between age and maxillary sinus in both the study and control groups. Gender distribution was equal between the groups. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age. No significant difference was found between the right and left maxillary sinus volumes. CONCLUSION Considering that there is no other study in the literature measuring maxillary sinus volume in asthmatic patients, this study may guide future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It was well documented that calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) participate in many physiological processes. We aimed to study the changing trend of serum levels of Ca, P, and Mg in frequent respiratory tract infections (FRTI) in children. METHODS A retrospective study was performed in our centre. A total of 213 FRTI cases and 33 controls were enrolled in our study. We analyzed the correlation between serum Ca/P/Mg levels and inflammatory indexes by using Spearman correlation analysis. Standard mean difference (SMD) was applied to test the differences of serum Ca/P/Mg levels between FRTI subgroups and controls. In terms of the findings of SMD between Ca/P/Mg status between FRTI subgroups and controls, receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was further applied to test the association between serum Ca level and bronchitis, parainfluenza virus infection, influenza B virus infection and cytomegalovirus infection. RESULTS Serum Ca level was significantly associated with white blood cell (WBC), platelet (PLT) and procalcitonin (PCT) (p = 0.006; p < 10-4; p = 0.004). Serum P level was markedly associated with eryhtrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and PCT (p = 0.018; p < 10-4). Controls showed significantly lower serum Ca level than that among bronchitis (p = 0.001), parainfluenza virus infection (p = 0.027), influenza B virus infection (p = 0.017), cytomegalovirus infection (p = 0.029), and two pathogens infected (p = 0.020). ROC curve analysis showed that serum Ca level was significantly associated with bronchitis (p = 0.047) and influenza B virus infection (p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS Serum levels of Ca and P may reflect the inflammatory status in children with FRTI. Alteration of serum Ca level may predict the risk of bronchitis and influenza B virus infection. Keeping the homeostasis of Ca, P, and Mg may be important for the prevention and treatment of FRTI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Specific pathogen infections associated with acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) in infants are risk factors for allergic asthma in adolescents. However, the risk factors for ARS onset remain largely unknown in asthmatic children. In this study, we aim to investigate the risk factors for ARS in childhood asthma. METHODS This study retrospectively compared and analyzed the clinical characteristics of asthmatic children with (n = 194) or without ARS (n = 799). Univariate regression analyses were performed to identify ARS-associated risk factors in asthmatic children, and subsequent multivariate backward stepwise logistic regression analyses were performed to identify independent risk factors. RESULTS The onset age, values of blood eosinophils (EOS) (%), and total IgE were significantly lower in patients with ARS than in those without ARS. Moreover, the proportions of patients allergic to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (d1) and Dermatophagoides farinae (d2) were significantly smaller in children with ARS (all p values <0.05). Univariate analyses showed that an older onset age, a higher body mass index, a higher value of blood EOS (%) were protective factors, while a higher value of blood lymphocytes (%) and a higher degree of sensitization to d1 and d2 were risk factors for ARS. Further backward stepwise multivariate logistic regression analyses confirmed that a younger onset age and allergic sensitization to d1 were independent risk factors for ARS in childhood asthma. CONCLUSION Younger onset age and allergic sensitization to d1 are risk factors for the onset of ARS in childhood asthma, so allergen intervention should be performed as early as possible in asthmatic children.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and positive sinonasal bacterial cultures may be recalcitrant to topical therapy alone due to the additional local inflammatory burden associated with bacterial infection/colonization.
Objective To evaluate sinonasal outcomes in CRSwNP patients with a positive perioperative bacterial culture, who were treated with postoperative intranasal corticosteroids (INCS) alone versus INCS in combination with a short-term course of oral corticosteroids (OCS).
Methods This is a retrospective chart review of CRSwNP patients. A total of 59 patients met inclusion criteria, including positive perioperative bacterial culture and treatment with INCS with or without concomitant use of OCS. Two cohorts were formed based on the chosen postoperative medical treatment; 32 patients underwent postoperative INCS alone, while 27 underwent INCS plus a ≤ 2-week course of OCS. The 22-item sinonasal outcome test (SNOT-22) scores and Lund-Kennedy scores (LKS) were assessed preoperatively, and at 2-week, 4-week, and 4 to 6 months after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).
Results There were no statistically significant differences in postoperative sinonasal symptoms or endoscopic scores between the cohorts treated with INCS plus OCS versus those prescribed INCS alone (p > 0.05). Our regression model failed to demonstrate a relationship between the use of OCS and better sinonasal outcomes at 2-week, 4-week, and 4 to 6 months after ESS (p > 0.05).
Conclusion Our study suggests that in a cohort of CRSwNP patients with recent bacterial infections, the postoperative use of combined OCS and INCS did not result in a statistical improvement of endoscopic and symptomatic outcomes over INCS irrigation alone. However, both treatment groups had a clinically significant improvement based on the Minimal Clinically Important Difference.

Abstract
Introduction: Cucumis dipsaceus is used to treat diarrhoea, microbial infections, among other diseases across the world; however, there is insufficient empirical data to validate its efficacy, toxicity, and safety. Accordingly, we investigated the antidiarrheal, antimicrobial, and toxic effects of the aqueous and methanolic leaf and fruit extracts of C. dipsaceus.Methods: Antidiarrheal activities of the aqueous and methanolic leaf and fruit extracts of C. dipsaceus were investigated using the castor oil-induced diarrhoea technique in a Wistar rat model. The disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods were adopted to determine the antimicrobial activities of the studied plant extracts. The acute oral toxicity effects of the studied plant extracts were investigated in Wistar rats according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines.Results: The aqueous and methanolic leaf and fruit extracts of C. dipsaceus significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited diarrhoea in a dose-dependent manner in experimental rats. Besides, the studied extracts significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited the growth of Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in varying degrees, as depicted by their growth inhibition zones (>6.00 mm) and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs <1000 μg/mL). Moreover, the studied extracts did not cause any observable acute oral toxicity effects in the experimental rats across the 14-day experimental period.Conclusion: The aqueous and methanolic leaf and fruit extracts of C. dipsaceus present a potential source of safe and efficacious lead compounds for developing antidiarrheal and antimicrobial therapies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Asthma is a common chronic airway inflammatory disease, lacking effective therapeutic approaches. Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate (MgIG) is an anti-inflammatory drug for treating chronic inflammation. However, it is still ambiguous whether MgIG can function in allergy induced asthma. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammation effect of MgIG in mice with allergy induced asthma and explored the underlying mechanisms. METHODS Mouse asthma model was established with ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge. Subsequently, mice sensitized with OVA were randomly assigned into fourgroups: asthma model group (MDL), dexamethasone group (DXM), MgIG group (MgIG), and normal mice were used as normal control (CON). The mice in MgIG, MDL were given 0.2 mg/ml MgIG solution by atomization inhalation for 30 min before 1% (w/v) OVA challenge. At the completion of model establishment and drug treatment, cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were classified, inflammatory factors in serum were determined, histopathological analysis was performed by H&E staining, and expression of MUC5AC, NLRP3, and cleaved caspase-1 in the lung tissue was also determined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting, respectively. KEY FINDINGS In comparison to MDL group, MgIG treatment could significantly inhibit the recruitment of white blood cells, neutrophils, and eosinophils in BALF, reduced the production of IL-6, TNF-α, and IgE in serum, and reduced mucus secretion and the infiltration of inflammatory cells. Also, an increase of NLRP3 and Caspase-1 protein levels were suppressed by MgIG treatment. CONCLUSION Our study findings support that nebulizer inhalation of MgIG as an effective therapy in treating the allergy induced asthma.

Abstract
Introduction Symptomatic relief of acute rhinosinusitis is commonly achieved with nasal decongestants. The current observational study investigated the efficacy and safety of treatment of acute rhinosinusitis with Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray compared to or in combination with Xylometazoline-containing decongesting nasal spray. Methods Patients with acute rhinosinusitis applied either Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray, Xylometazoline nasal spray or a combination of both products. Rhinosinusitis symptoms were assessed, and nasal oedema and endonasal redness were determined by rhinoscopy. Patient diaries based on the validated SNOT (Sino Nasal Outcome Test) questionnaire evaluated rhinosinusitis parameters over time and influences of the disease on quality of life. Following treatment, investigators and patients judged the efficacy and tolerability. Results Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray diminished common rhinosinusitis symptoms such as nasal obstruction, nasal secretion, facial pain/headache, and smell/taste impairment. Upon treatment over 7 days, rhinosinusitis sum scores decreased statistically significantly (p < 0.001) by − 64.25%, which was comparable to that achieved with Xylometazoline-containing decongesting nasal spray (− 67.60%). No side effects were observed during treatment with Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray, whereas treatment with Xylometazoline-containing nasal spray resulted in nasal mucosa dryness. Concomitant treatment with both products diminished the development of nasal dryness and required fewer applications of Xylometazoline-containing nasal spray. Conclusion Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray is an effective, natural treatment option for acute rhinosinusitis, which may be used as monotherapy or as add-on treatment with a Xylometazoline-containing nasal spray. The concomitant use of Ectoin® Rhinitis Spray might reduce the needed dose of decongestant nasal spray and counteract bothersome side effects such as dry nasal mucosa. Abstract
AIMS We investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one from Hippocampus trimaculatus leach and provided a theoretical basis for identifying its therapeutic targets. MAIN METHODS Small-RNA libraries were constructed for untreated control RAW 264.7 cells and cells treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 1.0 μg/mL) or 10 μM 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one +1.0 μg/mL LPS. We constructed and tested a miR-98-5p-interfering lentivirus to evaluate the role of miR-98-5p in the 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one-dependent regulation of inflammatory responses in LPS-induced macrophage and murine inflammation models. The small-RNA libraries were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing. KEY FINDINGS Among the differentially expressed microRNAs, miR-98-5p showed the most significant difference. Bioinformatics tools were used to identify the potential regulatory targets of miR-98-5p, which were tested using dual-luciferase reporter assays. Our results demonstrated that 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one exerted an anti-inflammatory effect via miR-98-5p, which negatively regulated the expression of its target gene TNFAIP3. The results indicate that miR-98-5p interference and 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one treatment significantly upregulated the low TNFAIP3 expression induced by LPS stimulation, thereby inhibiting TRAF6, RIP, NF-κB, IL-1β, and TNF-α secretion. SIGNIFICANCE 3β-Hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one alleviates inflammation by downregulating miR-98-5p and upregulating TNFAIP3, thereby blocking NF-κB pathway activation. These results reveal the specific anti-inflammatory mechanism of 3β-hydroxycholest-5-en-7-one, providing a foundation for developing new drugs and identifying drug targets.
