Abstract
Suitability of single-reference density functional theory (DFT) methods for the calculation of redox potentials of copper-containing macrocycle complexes was confirmed by the use of T 1 diagnostics along with a verification of negligible spin contamination or wave function instability. When examining the effect of improvement in the cc-pVnZ basis set series on calculated redox potentials, the results readily converged at the cc-pVTZ level. The all-electron Def2-TZVPP basis set is shown to be a suitable choice of a basis set for the calculation of redox potentials when utilizing a cc-pVTZ geometry. The best-performing model chemistries are determined to be the M06/polarizable continuum model (PCM); therefore, a scheme for redox potential calculations of copper macrocycles using either M06/cc-pVTZ with PCM solvation is proposed to reliably reproduce experimental trends.

Abstract
A new tetradentate mixed aza-thioether macrocyclic ligand 2,6-dithia[7](2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophane ([13]ane(phenN2)S2) was successfully synthesized. Reacting metal precursors [Fe(CH3CN)2(OTf)2], Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O, and Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O with one equivalent of [13]ane(phenN2)S2 afforded [Fe([13]ane(phenN2)S2)(OTf)2] (1), [Ni([13]ane(phenN2)S2)](ClO4)2 (2(ClO4)2), and [Cu([13]ane(phenN2)S2)(OH2)](ClO4)2 (3(ClO4)2), respectively. The structures of [13]ane(phenN2)S2 and all of its metal complexes were investigated by X-ray crystallography. The [13]ane(phenN2)S2 was found to behave as a tetradentate ligand via its donor atoms N and S.

Abstract
A series of luminescent fac-[Re(CO)3(L)(NN)](+) complexes, where L is a pyridine or an imidazole and NN is the 1,10-phenanthroline subunit of mixed donor pentadentate thioether crowns have been synthesised and their luminescence properties have been analysed. Then, heterometallic Re(i)/Au(i) complexes, with the Au(i) fragment bonded directly to the imidazole ligand, and heterometallic Re(i)/Ag(i) complexes, with the silver fragment coordinating the S-donor thioether linker of the rings have also been prepared. Analysis of their luminescence properties showed a considerable blue shift of the emission maxima for the Re(i)/Ag(i) derivatives, upon coordination of the silver centre to the S-donor atoms of the aliphatic chain of the macrocyclic units.

Abstract
Two new mixed aza-thia crowns 5-aza-2,8-dithia[9]-(2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophane (L(4)) and 2,8-diaza-5-thia[9]-(2,9)-1,10-phenanthrolinophane (L(7)) have been synthesized and characterized. The coordination behavior of L(4) and L(7) toward the metal ions Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Hg(II), and Ag(I) was studied in aqueous solution by potentiometric methods, in CD3CN/D2O 4:1 (v/v) by (1)H NMR titrations and in the solid state. The data obtained were compared with those available for the coordination behavior toward the same metal ions of structurally analogous mixed donor macrocyclic ligands L(1)-L(3), L(5), L(6): all these contain a phenanthroline subunit but have only S/O/N(aromatic) donor groups in the remaining portion of the ring and are, therefore, less water-soluble than L(4) and L(7). The complexes [Cd(NO3)2(L(5))], [Pb(L(7))](ClO4)2 x 1/2MeCN, [Pb(L(4))](ClO4)2 x MeCN, and [Cu(L(7))](ClO4)2 x 3/2MeNO2 were characterized by X-ray crystallography. The efficacy of L(1)-L(7) in competitive liquid-liquid metal ion extraction of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Ag(I), and Hg(II) was assessed. In the absence of Hg(II), a clear extraction selectivity for Ag(I) was observed in all systems investigated.
