Abstract
The purpose of this Viewpoint is to provide a broad-ranging update of advances in the coordination chemistry of redox-active (noninnocent) 2-aminophenolates, with emphasis on two ligand backbone structural parameters, the average of C-O and C-N (C-O/N) bond distances and Δa values, signifying the degree of bond-length alternation in the six-membered ring, in order to identify the redox level of the coordinated ligands. In the absence of magnetic, spectroscopic, and redox results, it has been established that it is possible to assign the electronic ground state of a coordination complex of 2-aminophenolates with consideration of charge, metal-ligand bond distances, and two very promising ligand backbone structural parameters. From a closer look at the sensitive ligand backbone metrical parameters of a diversified group of about 120 transition-metal complexes, a few very useful generalizations have been made.

Abstract
Complexes of divalent ytterbium (1) and europium (2) with a dianionic o-amidophenolate ligand were prepared by both the direct reduction of 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dpp-IQ) and the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-amidophenolate with LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu). Oxidation of o-amidophenolates 1, 2 with one equivalent of dpp-IQ as well as the salt metathesis reaction of potassium o-iminosemiquinolate with LnI2 afforded ligand mixed-valent o-iminosemiquinonato-amidophenolato complexes of trivalent ytterbium (3) and europium (4). All novel complexes 1-4 were fully characterized, including the solid state structures of 1 and 2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of paramagnetic 2-4 were examined.

Abstract
Treatments of N-aryl-phenanthren-o-iminoquinone (aryl = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (MeL); 2,6-iPr2C6H3 (iPrL)) with iron powder in THF at 75 °C generate complexes [η2L]2Fe[η1LH] (1a, L = MeL; 1b, L = iPrL) in moderate yields. The X-ray crystallography analysis reveals that the molecule of 1b consists of a Fe(iii) center coordinated by three phenanthren-o-iminosemiquinone ligands, two of which are in an η2 fashion while the remaining one is in an η1 fashion. The analysis of the bond parameters of ligands indicates that the η2-fashioned ligands are radical anions and the η1-fashioned one is in an aminephenolato form. Reactions of MeL and iPrL with FeCl2 in THF produce Fe(iii) complexes [L]2FeCl (2a, L = MeL; 2b, L = iPrL) with the two ligands in the radical anionic form. However, similar reactions of PIQ ligands with FeCl2 in CH2Cl2 yield ion-pair complexes {[L]2FeCl}+[FeCl4]- (3a, L = MeL; 3b, L = iPrL), in which the iron center chelated by two neutral ligands can be formulated as Fe(ii). Reduction of 2b with sodium provides a salt-type complex [iPrL2-]2Fe(ii)Na2 (4), in which a high spin Fe(ii) atom is ligated by two amidophenolate ligands, and the sodium atoms attached to the oxygen atoms of ligands are η3-coordinated by the aryl ring in amido moieties.

Abstract
The electronic structures of nickel and cobalt centers coordinated by two alpha-iminoketone ligands have been elucidated using density functional theory calculations and a host of physical methods such as X-ray crystallography, cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. In principle, alpha-iminoketone ligands can exist in three oxidation levels: the closed-shell neutral form (L)0, the closed-shell dianion (L(red))(2-), and the open-shell monoanion (L*)(-). Herein, the monoanionic pi-radical form (L*)(-) of alpha-iminoketones is characterized in the compounds [(L*)2Ni] (1) and [(L*)2Co] (3), where (L*)(-) is the one-electron-reduced form of the neutral ligand (t-Bu)N=CH-C(Ph)=O. The metal centers in 1 and 3 are divalent, high-spin, and coupled antiferromagnetically to two ligand pi radicals. These bis(ligand)metal complexes can be chemically oxidized by two electrons to give the dications [trans-(L)2Ni(CH3CN)2](PF6)2 (2) and [trans-(L)2Co(CH3CN)2](PF6)2 (4), wherein the ligands are in the neutral form.
