The influence of substituents (R) at N1 atom of thiophene-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazones {(C4H3S)HC2N3–N(H)–C1(S)N1HR} on bonding, nuclearity and H-bonded networks of copper(I) complexes

Novel mono-, bi-, tri- and tetra-nuclear copper complexes that inhibit tumor growth through apoptosis and anti-angiogenesis

To develop the next-generation metal agents for efficiently inhibiting tumor growth, a series of novel mononuclear, binuclear and trinuclear copper (Cu) thiophene-2-formaldehyde thiosemicarbazone complexes and a tetranuclear Cu 1,2,4-triazole-derived complex have been synthesized and their structure-activity relationships have been studied. The trinucleated Cu complex showed the strongest inhibitory activity against T24 cells among all the Cu complexes. Its antitumor effect in vivo was superior to that of cisplatin, with reduced side effects. Further studies on the antitumor mechanism have showed that Cu complexes not only induced apoptosis of cancer cells but also inhibited tumor angiogenesis by inhibiting the migration and invasion of vascular endothelial cells, blocking the cell cycle in the G1 phase, and inducing autophagy.

Thiosemicarbazonecopper/Halido Systems: Structure and DFT Analysis of the Magnetic Coupling

Experimental magnetic studies performed on the [{CuLX}2] system (HL = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, X = Cl−, Br−, I−) point to the larger electronegativity in X, the lower magnitude of the antiferromagnetic interactions. In order to confirm this and other trends observed and to dip into them, computational studies on the [{CuLX}2] (X = Cl− (1), I− (2)) compounds are here reported. The chemical and structural comparisons have been extended to the compounds obtained in acid medium. In this regard, chlorido ligands yield the [Cu(HL)Cl2]∙H2O (3) complex, whose crystal structure shows that thiosemicarbazone links as a tridentate chelate ligand to square pyramidal Cu(II) ions. On the other hand, iodido ligands provoke the formation of the [{Cu(H2L)I2}2] (4) derivative, which contains pyridine-protonated cationic H2L+ as a S-donor monodentate ligand bonded to Cu(I) ions. Crystallographic, infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic results are discussed. Computational calculations predict a greater stability for the chlorido species, containing both the neutral (HL) and anionic (L−) ligand. The theoretical magnetic studies considering isolated dimeric entities reproduce the sign and magnitude of the antiferromagnetism in 1, but no good agreement is found for compound 2. The sensitivity to the basis set and the presence of interdimer magnetic interactions are debated.

Synthesis, characterization, and biological properties of mono-, di- and poly-nuclear bismuth(III) halide complexes containing thiophene-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazones

In order to investigate the coordination chemistry and pharmacological applications of bismuth compounds, a series of new bismuth(III) halide thiosemicarbazone complexes were synthesized. The reactions of thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-substituted thiosemicarbazones with bismuth(III) halides resulted in the formation of the {[[BiCl₂(η¹-S-Httsc)₄]⁺.Cl^-][BiCl₂(μ₂-Cl)(η¹-S-Httsc)₂]₂} (1), {[BiCl₃(η¹-S-Htmtsc)₃].CH₃OH} (2), {[BiCl₃(η¹-S-Htetsc)₃].CH₃OH} (3), {[BiBr₂(μ₂-Br)(η¹-S-Httsc)₂]₂.CH₃OH} (4), {[BiBr₂(μ₂-Br)(η¹-S-Htmtsc)₂]_n} (5), and {[BiI₂(μ₂-I)(η¹-S-Httsc)₂]₂} (6) complexes (Httsc: thiophene-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone, Htmtsc: thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-methyl thiosemicarbazone, Htetsc: thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-ethyl thiosemicarbazone). The complexes were characterized by a number of different spectroscopic techniques and the crystal structures of all bismuth(III) complexes (1-6) were determined by using single crystal X-ray diffraction study. In addition, the thermal stability of the complexes was compared using Thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis. Crystal structures of the two free ligands, thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-methyl-thiosemicarbazone and thiophene-2-carbaldehyde-N-ethyl-thiosemicarbazone, were also determined by using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Hirshfeld surface of the bismuth(III) complexes and free ligands were additionally analyzed to verify the intermolecular interactions. Biological studies showed that all six bismuth(III) thiosemicarbazone complexes (1-6) exhibited biological activities against selected bacteria and the human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell line.

Synthesis of 2-acetylpyridine-N-substituted thiosemicarbazonates of copper(ii) with high antimicrobial activity against methicillin resistant S. aureus, K. pneumoniae 1 and C. albicans

The basic interest in the present study pertains to developing metal based antimicrobial agents, as several microorganisms have built resistance to the conventional drugs.

Investigation of putative arene-C-H···π(quasi-chelate ring) interactions in copper(I) crystal structures

Evidence for C-H···π(CuCl···HNCS) interactions, i.e. C-H···π(quasi-chelate ring) where a six-membered quasi-chelate ring is closed by an N-H···Cl hydrogen bond, is presented based on crystal structure analyses of (Ph3P)2Cu[ROC(=S)N(H)Ph]Cl. Similar intramolecular interactions are identified in related literature structures. Calculations suggest that the energy of attraction provided by such interactions approximates 3.5 kcal mol(-1).
