Valence directed binding mode of the unsymmetrical ditopic ligand was observed in tetranuclear trivalent (FeIII4) and mixed valent (FeII2FeIII2) [2 × 2] iron grid complexes.

Crystal structure of bis-(μ-N-hy-droxy-picolin-amid-ato)bis-[bis-(N-hy-droxy-picolinamide)-sodium]

The title compound, [Na2(C6H5N2O2)2(C6H6N2O2)4], is a centrosymmetric coordination dimer based on the sodium(I) salt of N-hy-droxy-picolinamide. The mol-ecule has an {Na2O6(μ-O)2} core with two bridging carbonyl O atoms and two hydroxamate O atoms of two mono-deprotonated residues of N-hy-droxy-picolinamide, while two neutral N-hy-droxy-picolinamide mol-ecules are coordinated in a monodentate manner to each sodium ion via the carbonyl O atoms [the Na-O distances range from 2.3044 (2) to 2.3716 (2) Å]. The penta-coordinated sodium ion exhibits a distorted trigonal-pyramidal coordination polyhedron. In the crystal, the coordination dimers are linked into chains along the c axis via N-H⋯O and N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds; the chains are linked into a two-dimensional framework parallel to (100) via weak C-H⋯O and π-π stacking inter-actions.

Crystal engineering of a series of complexes and coordination polymers based on pyrazole-carboxylic acid ligands

Three new complexes and two coordination polymers have been synthesized.

A dinuclear zinc(II) complex of a new unsymmetric ligand with an N(5)O(2) donor set: a structural and functional model for the active site of zinc phosphoesterases

The dinuclear complex [Zn(2)(DPCPMP)(pivalate)](ClO4), where DPCPMP is the new unsymmetrical ligand [2-(N-(3-((bis((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)amino)methyl)-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzyl)-N-((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)amino)acetic acid], has been synthesized and characterized. The complex is a functional model for zinc phosphoesterases with dinuclear active sites. The hydrolytic efficacy of the complex has been investigated using bis-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP), a DNA analog, as substrate. Speciation studies using potentiometric titrations have been performed for both the ligand and the corresponding dizinc complex to elucidate the formation of the active hydrolysis catalyst; they reveals that the dinuclear zinc(II) complexes, [Zn(2)(DPCPMP)](2+) and [Zn(2)(DPCPMP)(OH)](+) predominate the solution above pH4. The relatively high pK(a) of 8.38 for water deprotonation suggests that a terminal hydroxide complex is formed. Kinetic investigations of BDNPP hydrolysis over the pH range 5.5-11.0 and with varying metal to ligand ratio (metal salt:ligand=0.5:1 to 3:1) have been performed. Variable temperature studies gave the activation parameters ΔH(‡)=95.6kJmol(-1), ΔS(‡)=-44.8Jmol(-1)K(-1), and ΔG(‡)=108.0 kJmol(-1). The cumulative results indicate the hydroxido-bridged dinuclear Zn(II) complex [Zn(2)(DPCPMP)(μ-OH)](+) as the effective catalyst. The mechanism of hydrolysis has been probed by computational modeling using density functional theory (DFT). Calculations show that the reaction goes through one concerted step (S(N)2 type) in which the bridging hydroxide in the transition state becomes terminal and performs a nucleophilic attack on the BDNPP phosphorus; the leaving group dissociates simultaneously in an overall inner sphere type activation. The calculated free energy barrier is in good agreement with the experimentally determined activation parameters.

(3-Acetyl-4-methyl-1H-pyrazol-1-ide-5-carboxyl-ato)bis-(1,10-phenanthroline)nickel(II) 3.5-hydrate

The title compound, [Ni(C₇H₆N₂O₃)(C₁₂H₈N₂)₂]·3.5H₂O, crystallizes as a neutral mononuclear complex with 3.5 solvent water mol­ecules. One of the water mol­ecules lies on an inversion centre, so that its H atoms are disordered over two sites. The coordination environment of Ni^II has a slightly distorted octa­hedral geometry, which is formed by one O and five N atoms belonging to the N,O-chelating pyrazol-1-ide-5-carboxyl­ate and two N,N′-chelating phenanthroline mol­ecules. In the crystal, O—H⋯O, N—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds involving the solvent water mol­ecules and pyrazole-5-carboxyl­ate ligands form layers parallel to the ab plane. These layers are linked further via weak π–π inter­actions between two adjacent phenanthroline mol­ecules, with centroid-to-centroid distances in the range 3.886 (2)–4.018 (1) Å, together with C—H⋯π contacts, forming a three-dimensional network.
