Abstract
Abstract
The review summarizes the data on the structures and methods for the synthesis of compounds with anticancer activity based on biogenic metals, which can replace platinum drugs prevailing in cytotoxic therapy. The main focus is given to the comparison of the mechanisms of the cytotoxic action of these complexes, their efficacy and prospects of their use in clinical practice. This is the first systematic review of cytotoxic zinc, iron, cobalt and copper compounds. The structure – activity relationships and the mechanisms of antitumour action are formulated for each type of metal complexes.

Abstract
Micellar solubilization and physicochemical behaviour of [Ni(phen)3]F2 EtOH · MeOH · 8 H2O complex in sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate and sodium bis(2-ethyl hexyl) sulfosuccinate is addressed in this paper. The interactions of surfactants in the solution of nickel complex were studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrical conductivity. The extent of solubilization in terms of partitioning and binding parameters was determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy, whereas conductivity data were employed to calculate critical micellar concentration and other thermodynamic parameters of micellization. The value of critical micellar concentration increased in both surfactants due to structure breaking effect of nickel complex. The complex showed significant antioxidant radical scavenging and hemolytic activities, without any substantial cytotoxic activity against 3T3 cell line.

Abstract
In this study, two novel binuclear Co(II) complexes, [Co4(L1)2(CH3CH2O)4·5.5H2O (1) and [Co2(L2)2(CH3COO)(H2O)]·2CH3OH·3H2O (2)], with the ligands H3L1 and H2L2 were synthesized and structurally characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of complex 1 and 2 belong to a monoclinic system with space group of P2(1)/n and triclinic system with space group of P-1, respectively. Their interaction with CT-DNA was investigated using electron absorption and fluorescent spectroscopy. The apparent binding constants (Kapp) of two complexes (1 and 2) were determined to be 5.34 × 105 and 5.82 × 105, respectively, and both exhibited a moderate intensity of insertion with 2 > 1. Fluorescence quenching studies indicated that the fluorescence quenching mechanism of complex 1 is dynamic quenching and that of complex 2 is a static quenching mechanism. The chemical nuclease activity of the complexes was studied using agarose gel electrophoresis. The results suggest that when H2O2 is added, complexes 1 and 2 exhibit chemical nuclease activity. The cleavage mechanisms between the complexes and plasmid DNA are the likely oxidative cleavage process of hydroxyl radical (OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) as active species.

Abstract
A new series of cysteine-based metal(II) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline as co-ligand have been prepared and characterized. Their DNA binding and cleavage properties have been studied. The analytical and spectroscopic data of complexes 1-18 reveal that the complexes adopt an octahedral geometry around the central metal ion in which the cysteine is coordinated through NS and NN atoms, respectively. Spectroscopic titration and viscosity measurements reveal that the complexes bind to DNA through an intercalative mode. Electrophoresis measurements exhibit that they cleave pBR322 DNA efficiently in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), probably via hydrolytic mechanism with the involvement of (•)OH. The in vitro anticancer activities indicate that the Cu(II) complexes are active against four selected human tumor cell lines. Furthermore, it is remarkable that all the complexes exhibit significant photocytotoxicity against human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7) with a potency more than the widely used drugs photofrin and cisplatin indicating that they have the potential to act as effective anticancer drugs in a dose-dependent manner.
