Mixed-Valent Trinuclear CoIII-CoII-CoIII Complex with 1,3-Bis(5-chlorosalicylideneamino)-2-propanol. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27134211. [PMID: 35807456 PMCID: PMC9268718 DOI: 10.3390/molecules27134211] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/31/2022] [Revised: 06/27/2022] [Accepted: 06/27/2022] [Indexed: 01/27/2023] Open
Abstract
A mixed-valent trinuclear complex with 1,3-bis(5-chlorosalicylideneamino)-2-propanol (H3clsalpr) was synthesized, and the crystal structure was determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method at 90 K. The molecule is a trinuclear CoIII-CoII-CoIII complex with octahedral geometries, having a tetradentate chelate of the Schiff-base ligand, bridging acetate, monodentate acetate coordination to each terminal Co3+ ion and four bridging phenoxido-oxygen of two Schiff-base ligands, and two bridging acetate-oxygen atoms for the central Co2+ ion. The electronic spectral feature is consistent with the mixed valent CoIII-CoII-CoIII. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data could be analyzed by consideration of the axial distortion of the central Co2+ ion with the parameters Δ = –254 cm−1, λ = –58 cm−1, κ = 0.93, tip = 0.00436 cm3 mol−1, θ = –0.469 K, gz = 6.90, and gx = 2.64, in accordance with a large anisotropy. The cyclic voltammogram showed an irreversible reduction wave at approximately −1.2 V·vs. Fc/Fc+, assignable to the reduction of the terminal Co3+ ions.

Abstract
Focusing on the huge importance associated in developing functional materials, this research study describes the synthesis, characterization of morphology, bactericidal activity and cytotoxic effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs). IONPs have been successfully fabricated through thermal decomposition of a diiron(III) complex precursor. The morphology of the nanoparticle has been delineated with different spectroscopic and analytic methods. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FE-SEM and HR-TEM) analyses estimate the cross linked porous structure of IONPs with an average size ~97 nm. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) study of IONPs determines the hydrodynamic diameter as 104 nm. The cytotoxic behavior of IONPs has been examined against human lung cancer cell line (A549) through different fluorescence staining studies which ensure the mode of apoptosis for cell death of A549. Furthermore, measurement of reactive oxygen species suggests the destruction of mitochondrial membrane of Staphylococcus aureus, leading to effective bactericidal propensity which holds a good promise for IONPs to become a clinically approved antibacterial agent.

Abstract
Salen-formaldehyde (SF) resin polymer spheres were synthesized by the Stöber method from 4,4′-dihydroxysalen (N,N′-bis-(4-hydroxysalicylidene)-ethylenediamine; a tetradentate N2O2 Schiff base ligand) and formaldehyde. The salen precursor was prepared by condensation of ethylenediamine with 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde in methanol. The SF resin colloidal spheres were also prepared by using Pluronic F127 and ammonia as a porogenic agent and catalyst, respectively (SF-P). In addition, corresponding Mn(ii)-coordinated polymer spheres of the SF-P were synthesized (SF-P-Mn(ii)). Corresponding monodispersed carbon spheres of all of the abovementioned samples were also obtained by pyrolysis technique. All of the products were characterized with conventional microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, as well as other physical methods such as BET analysis. It was found that carbonization of the SF resin spheres results in carbon spheres with specific surface areas in the range of 499–528 m2 g−1 and average pore sizes in the range of 2.58–3.08 nm. Nitrogen content of the SF-MWHT (obtained hydrothermally in a methanol/water mixture), and SF-P-C@Mn (obtained from carbonization of SF-P-Mn(ii)) samples were as high as 27.5 wt% and 35.02 wt%, respectively. Finally, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with SF-P-C@Mn (SF-P-C@Mn/GCE) was prepared and its electrocatalytic activity was evaluated for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The LSV results showed that the SF-P-C@Mn/GCE has a higher current density and a lower negative potential in the ORR compared to GCE. Abstract
Unusual self-sorting of an ion-pair under highly crowded conditions driven by a synthesized intelligent molecule 2-((E)-(3-((E)-2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropyl imino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, hereafter HBP, is described. When a mixture of various metal salts was allowed to react with HBP, only a specific ion-pair ZnII/AcO- in the solution simultaneously reacted, resulting in high-fidelity ion-pair recognition of HBP. This phenomenon was evidenced by significant changes in the absorption spectra and huge enhancement in emission intensity of HBP. The property that one molecule preferring one particular cation-anion pair over others is a rare but interesting phenomenon. Thus, the potential to interact selectively with the targeted ion-pair resulting in the formation of a specific complex recognized HBP as a new class of molecule that might find future applications in real time and on-site monitoring and separation of new molecules.

Abstract
A new trinuclear zinc(II) complex, [Zn3(L)(NCS)2](NO3)2·CH3OH·H2O (1), of a (N,O)-donor compartmental Schiff base ligand (H2L=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol), has been synthesized in crystalline phase. The zinc(II) complex has been characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction study (PXRD), (1)H NMR, EI mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. PXRD revealed that 1 crystallizes in P-1 space group with a=9.218 Å, b=10.849 Å, c=18.339 Å, with unit cell volume is 2179.713(Å)(3). Fluorescence spectra in methanolic solution reflect that intensity of emission for 1 is much higher compared to H2L and both the compounds exhibit good fluorescence properties. The complex 1 exhibits significant catalytic activities of biological relevance, viz. catechol oxidase. In methanol, it efficiently catalyzes the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) to corresponding quinone via formation of a dinuclear species as [Zn2(L)(3,5-DTBC)]. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiment suggests generation of radicals in the presence of 3,5-DTBC and it may be proposed that the radical pathway is probably responsible for conversion of 3,5-DTBC to 3,5-DTBQ promoted by complex of redox-innocent Zn(II) ion.

Abstract
Four mononuclear chromium(III) complexes [Cr(L(1))(en)]Br0.3Cl0.7 (1), [Cr(L(1))(pr)]Cl (2), [Cr(L(2))(en)]ClO4 (3), [Cr(L(2))(pr)]Cl (4) along with one dinuclear μ-methoxo [Cr(μ-OMe)(L1)]2 (5) were synthesized (en=1,2-ethanediamine, pr=1,3-diaminopropane H2L(1)=Tetrahydrosalen=H2[H4]salen=N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,2-ethanediamine, H2L(2)=Tetrahydrosalpr=H2[H4]salpr=N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,3-diaminopropane). The competitive reactions in the presence of EDTA were carried out and the first-order rate constants k(1)=(5.2±0.2)×10(-3) h(-1)<k(2)=(6.7±0.3)×10(-3) h(-1)<k(3)=(8.0±0.1)×10(-3) h(-1)<k(4)=(9.5±0.2)×10(-3) h(-1) were obtained by spectroscopic measurements. In addition, photo-induced decomposition was monitored under irradiation of xenon lamp. The sequence of first-order rate constants is k'(1)=(4±0.1)×10(-4) s(-1)<k'(2)=(6±0.3)×10(-4) s(-1)<k'(3)=(1.1±0.2)×10(-3) s(-1)<k'(4)=(1.4±0.2)×10(-3) s(-1), which is in accordance with that of kinetics studies with EDTA. Dinuclear complex 5 exhibits a strong antiferromagnetic coupling with the J=-10.8 cm(-1).
