Norfloxacin derivatives as DNA gyrase and urease inhibitors: synthesis, biological evaluation and molecular docking

Background: DNA gyrase and urease enzymes are important targets for the treatment of gastroenteritis, appendicitis, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections and Crohn's disease. Materials & methods: Esterification of norfloxacin was performed to enhance DNA gyrase and urease enzyme inhibition potential. Structure elucidation and chemical characterization were done through spectral (1H NMR, Fourier transform IR, 13C NMR) and carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur analysis along with molecular docking. Results & conclusion: The majority of derivatives exhibited significant results but the 3e derivative showed maximum bactericidal, DPPH scavenging (96%), DNA gyrase and urease enzyme inhibitory activity with IC50 of 0.15 ± 0.24 and 1.14 ± 0.11 μM respectively which was further supported by molecular docking studies. So, the active derivatives can serve as a lead compound for the treatment of various pathological conditions.

Organic Arsenicals as Functional Motifs in Polymer and Biomaterials Science

Arsenic (As) exhibits diverse (bio)chemical reactivity and biological activity depending upon its oxidation state. However, this distinctive reactivity has been largely overlooked across many fields owing to concerns regarding the toxicity of arsenic. Recently, a clinical renaissance in the use of arsenicals, including organic arsenicals that are known to be less toxic than inorganic arsenicals, alludes to the possibility of broader acceptance and application in the field of polymer and biomaterials science. Here, current examples of polymeric/macromolecular arsenicals are reported to stimulate interest and highlight their potential as a novel platform for functional, responsive, and bioactive materials.

Current and potential applications of bismuth-based drugs

: Bismuth compounds have been used extensively as medicines and in particular for the treatment of gastrointestinal ailments. In addition to bismuth's well known gastroprotective effects and efficacy in treating H. pylori infection it also has broad anti-microbial, anti-leishmanial and anti-cancer properties. Aspects of the biological chemistry of bismuth are discussed and biomolecular targets associated with bismuth treatment are highlighted. This review strives to provide the reader with an up to date account of bismuth-based drugs currently used to treat patients and discuss potential medicinal applications of bismuth drugs with reference to recent developments in the literature. Ultimately this review aims to encourage original contributions to this exciting and important field.
