Abstract
Schiff bases, named after Hugo Schiff, are formed when primary amine reacts with carbonyl compounds (aldehyde or ketone) under specific conditions. Schiff bases are economical, simple synthetic routes, and easily accessible in laboratories. They have medicinal and biological applications such as antiviral, antioxidant, antifungal, anticancer, anthelmintic, antibacterial, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antiglycation, anti-ulcerogenic, and analgesic potentials. A number of Schiff bases are reported for the detection of various metal ions. They are also used as catalysts, polymer stabilizers, intermediates in organic synthesis, and corrosion inhibitors. In this review, we have highlighted the recent advancements in the development of bioactive Schiff base derivatives and their sensing applications for detecting metal cations. Additionally, various spectroscopic techniques for structural characterization, such as X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), FT-IR, UV-vis, and NMR spectroscopy were also discussed.

Abstract
A novel 7-nitro-1,2,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD)-based chemosensor BOP ((5-bromopyridin-2-yl)(4-(7-nitrobenzo[c][1,2,5]oxadiazol-4-yl)piperazin-1-yl)methanone) was synthesized. BOP could detect S2- through fluorescent quenching and colorimetric change. The detection limit was calculated to be 10.9 µM through fluorescence titration. The reaction mechanism of BOP towards S2- was estimated to be thiolysis of NBD amine, producing the cleavage products, NBD-S- and BP ((5-bromopyridin-2-yl)(piperazin-1-yl)methanone). The thiolysis was demonstrated by 1H NMR titrations, ESI-mass analysis and theoretical calculations. Importantly, BOP was able to successfully monitor S2- in zebrafish and water samples. Additionally, test strips coated with BOP were applied to the in-the-field measurements of S2-.

Abstract
A novel hydrazone-based fluorescent probe (E)-3-((2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (BTC) has been rationally designed and synthesized. BTC can subsequently detect Ga3+ and PPi ions through the absorption and emission off-on-off response with high specificity. Importantly, fluorescent probe BTC can well discriminate Ga3+ from Al3+ and In3+. The association constant (K) was calculated as 2.06 × 104M-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated as 4.88 × 10-2μM. Competitive binding studies also illustrated good results of the probe BTC towards Ga3+. Job's plot and HRMS results substantiated the 1:1 stoichiometry between BTC and Ga3+ ion. The interaction binding mode of BTC with Ga3+ was proposed by HRMS, 1H NMR spectral titration, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectral measurements. The combination of the restraint of the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process and the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) process is responsible for the fluorescence enhancement of this probe. The in situ chelated BTC-Ga3+ could further monitor pyrophosphate ion (PPi) by demetallization process with quenching fluorescence emission. Additionally, the BTC and BTC-Ga3+ showed good cell permeability and could detect Ga3+ and PPi ions in onioninner epidermal cells, respectively.

Abstract
The concentration of intracellular zinc ions is a significant clinical parameter for diagnosis. However, it is still a challenge for direct visual detection of zinc ions in cells at single-cell level. To address this issue, herein, water-soluble amino-rich polydopamine carbon quantum dots (PDA-CQDs) were successfully synthesized, with strong blue-green fluorescence as the probes for zinc ions detection in cells. The structure and properties of PDA-CQDs were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR), UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), and fluorescence spectroscopy. Importantly, by successfully linking salicylaldehyde (SA) to PDA-CQDs via nucleophilic reaction, the FL quenching and Zn ions induced FL-recovering system was built up, thus offering a signal-on platform for the detection of zinc ions. This PDA-CQDs-SA nanoprobe can be applied for the detection of Zn2+with a detection limit of 0.09μM, with good biocompatibility confirmed using cytotoxicity assay. Of significance, the results of fluorescence bioimaging showed that PDA-CQDs-SA is able to detect Zn2+in single-cell visually, with the detection limit of Zn ions in cells as low as 0.11μM per cell, which was confirmed using flow cytometry. Therefore, this work offers a potential probe for Zn2+detection in cells at single-cell level, towards the precise diagnosis of zinc ions related diseases.

Abstract
In this work, a novel sensor, (E)-N′-(3-(tert-butyl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)thiophene-2-carbohydrazide (1), based on salicylaldehyde and thiophene hydrazide moieties was designed and synthesized. The single-crystal structure of 1 was achieved and studied for understanding its functional properties. The interaction and recognition abilities of 1 with different metal ions were investigated. Sensor 1 showed excellent “turn-on” fluorescence with highly selective and specific recognition ability in the presence of gallium ions (Ga3+) in an aqueous solution. The sensing behavior of 1 with Ga3+ was also studied by photophysical experiments, ESI-MS analysis, and 1H NMR titration. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1 for the detection of Ga3+ in an aqueous solution were calculated as 58 nM, and 192 nM, respectively. DFT calculations were carried out to optimize the configuration of 1 and 1–Ga3+ complexes and rationalize the photophysical experimental data. Highly selective test strips based on sensor 1 were developed for Ga3+ detection. Sensor 1 was also used to detect Ga3+ in actual water samples, and a considerable recovery rate was obtained. In this work, a highly selective water-soluble “turn-on” fluorescent sensor for gallium ion recognition was reported.![]()

Abstract
The effect of aminopyridines substituted at different positions on the fluorescence properties deserves to be studied. Since 2-aminopyridyl-based probes have been reported, the effects of 3-aminopyridine and 4-aminopyridine on the performance of fluorescein probes were discussed in here. Two Schiff base fluorescein probes FN-1, FN-2 were designed and synthesized. Among them, since the ligand shows a highly selective and sensitive response to metal charge transfer (LMCT), the fluorescence of FN-1 can be quenched by Ce3+ ions in PBS buffer. At the same time, a specific precipitation reaction between Ce3+ and F- releases the free probe to restore the fluorescence of FN-1. Therefore, FN-1 can be used for the recyclable 'ON-OFF-ON' detection of Ce3+and F-. The detection limits for Ce3+and F- are 4.48 μM and 11.58 μM in concentration range of 0-50 μM and 0-150 μM. However, due to the para position of N and amino groups on 4-aminopyridine, the spatial structure of FN-2 cannot be complexed with ions, resulting in poor selectivity. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane containing FN-1 were prepared for the real-time qualitative detection of Ce3+and F- in real water samples. FN-1 exhibits high water solubility and biocompatibility and has been successfully applied to biological imaging in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).

Abstract
A quinoline-based fluorescence sensor QDTD was developed for Zn2+. QDTD can detect Zn2+ by fluorescence turn-on. Detecting limit (0.27 μM) of QDTD for Zn2+ was far below WHO standard (76.0 μM). For the practical application, compound QDTD could be used to determine Zn2+ in real samples and applied to the test kit. More importantly, QDTD was expertly applied for Zn2+ imaging in HeLa cells and zebrafish with good membrane-permeability. Detection mechanism of Zn2+ ion by compound QDTD was suggested through the analytical tools like 1H NMR titration, ESI-MS, Job plot, fluorescent and UV-vis titration, and theoretical calculations, and through the synthesis and applications of a model compound AAQA.

Abstract
Rationally designed multiple hydroxyl-group-based chemosensors L1-L4 containing arene-based fluorophores are presented for the selective detection of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Changes in the absorption and emission spectra of L1-L4 in ethanol were easily observable upon the addition of Al3+ and Ga3+ ions. Competitive binding studies, detection limits, and binding constants illustrate significant sensing abilities of these chemosensors with L4, showing the best results. The interaction of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was investigated by fluorescence lifetime measurements, whereas Job's plot, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and 1H NMR spectral titrations substantiated the stoichiometry between L4 and Al3+/Ga3+ ions. The solution-generated [L-M3+] species further detected pyrophosphate ion (PPi) by exhibiting emission enhancement and a visible color change. The binding of Al3+/Ga3+ ions with chemosensor L4 was further supported by density functional theory studies. Reversibility for the detection of Al3+/Ga3+ ions was achieved by utilizing a suitable proton source. The multiionic response, reversibility, and optical visualization of the present chemosensors make them ideal for practical applications for real samples, which have been illustrated by paper-strip as well as polystyrene film-based detection.

Abstract
A naphthol-based sensor (L) was designed and synthesized for the specific recognition of Ga3+ using fluorescence enhancement. An in situ generated L-Ga3+ ensemble detected ADP and ATP more selectively through a fluorescence "switch off" response, which was confirmed both in cells and in adult zebrafish.
