Electronic properties of ferrocenyl-terpyridine coordination complexes: An electrochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic approach

Arsenic removal from copper slag matrix by high temperature sulfide-reduction-volatilization

Arsenic contamination has been a major problem in copper slag utilization. Arsenic is easily incorporated into the silicate-based matrix, making the arsenic difficult to volatilize. In this study, pyrite was selected to depolymerize the matrix structure and volatilize the glassy arsenic by sulfide-reduction-volatilization reaction. The optimum technological parameters and mechanism of glassy arsenic volatilization by pyrite were further studied. The optimum operating parameters for glassy arsenic volatilization by pyrite were determined to be a temperature of 1200 °C, a holding time of 60 min, a heating rate of 5 °C/min, a basicity of 0.3, and a pyrite addition content of 15%. The arsenic volatilization ratio reached 80.9% under these experimental conditions. Besides, the mechanism of glassy arsenic volatilization was elucidated by XRD, XPS, FTIR, and SEM analyses. These results indicate that, with the increase in temperature, the pyrite decomposes to generate a variety of sulfur-based reducing substances (FeS, FeS_1-x, S₂(g)). Through "oxygen capture reaction", these sulfur-based reducing substances depolymerize the bridging oxygen structure from the glass former ([AsO₄], [FeO₄], and [SiO₄]) by the conversion of (Q² +Q³)→(Q⁰ +Q¹) and result in the precipitation of glass former ([AsO₄], [FeO₄] and [SiO₄]) combining with the nearby cation. In this process, the glassy arsenic is released by the glass network and participates in reductive volatilization reaction with sulfur-based reducing substances, converting the glassy arsenic with high thermal stability to volatile arsenic oxide and arsenic sulfide. These findings provide a theoretical support for the in situ volatilization of arsenic in copper smelting and centralized control of arsenic contamination.

Turning over on sticky balls: preparation and catalytic studies of surface-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles

We have investigated the reactivity of rhodium(iii) complex-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles and demonstrate a proof-of-principle study of their catalytic activity in an alcohol oxidation carried out under aqueous conditions water in air. TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been treated with (4-([2,2':6',2''-terpyridin]-4'-yl)phenyl)phosphonic acid, 1, to give the functionalized NPs (1)@TiO2. Reaction between (1)@TiO2 NPs and either RhCl3·3H2O or [Rh2(μ-OAc)4(H2O)2] produced the rhodium(iii) complex-functionalized NPs Rh(1)2@TiO2. The functionalized NPs were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies; the single crystal structures of [Rh(1)2][NO3]3·1.25[H3O][NO3]·2.75H2O and of a phosphonate ester derivative were determined. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to follow the reaction kinetics and to assess the recyclability of the NP-supported catalyst. The catalytic activity of the Rh(1)2@TiO2 NPs was compared to that of a homogeneous system containing [Rh(1)2]3+, confirming that no catalytic activity was lost upon surface-binding. Rh(1)2@TiO2 NPs were able to withstand reaction temperatures of up to 100 °C for 24 days without degradation.

Terpyridine-metal complexes: effects of different substituents on their physico-chemical properties and density functional theory studies

A series of different substituted terpyridine (tpy)-based ligands have been synthesized by Kröhnke method. Their binding behaviour was evaluated by complexing them with Co(II), Fe(II) and Zn(II) ions, which resulted in interesting coordination compounds with formulae, [Zn(tpy)₂]PF₆, [Co(tpy)₂](PF₆)₂, [Fe(tpy)₂](PF₆)₂ and interesting spectroscopic properties. Their absorption and emission behaviours in dilute solutions were investigated in order to explain structure-property associations and demonstrate the impact of different aryl substituents on the terpyridine scaffold as well as the role of the metal on the complexes. Photo-luminescence analysis of the complexes in acetonitrile solution revealed a transition from hypsochromic to bathochromic shift. All the compounds displayed remarkable photo-luminescent properties and various maximum emission peaks owing to the different nature of the functional groups. Furthermore, the anti-microbial potential of ligands and complexes was evaluated with docking analyses carried out to investigate the binding affinity of terpyridine-based ligands along with corresponding proteins (shikimate dehydrogenase and penicillin-binding protein) binding sites. To obtain further insight into molecular orbital distributions and spectroscopic properties, density functional theory calculations were performed for representative complexes. The photophysical activity and interactions between chromophore structure and properties were both investigated experimentally as well as theoretically.

2-D organization of silica nanoparticles on gold surfaces: CO2 marker detection and storage

A single layer of silica nanoparticles with an average size of ∼200 nm was deposited over the surface of pristine gold wafers, aided by (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane.

Palladium/graphene oxide nanocomposites with carbon nanotubes and/or magnetite for the reduction of nitrophenolic compounds

Graphene oxide (GO) was synthesised via the oxidation of graphite and was characterised using ATR FTIR, PXRD, SEM, TEM and TGA. These techniques confirmed the presence of characteristic oxygen-containing functional groups and the resulting increase in interlayer spacing in the nanostructure. GO is used as the support to form nanocomposites composed of combinations of the following: iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄), carbon nanotubes (CNT) and palladium nanoparticles (Pd). The four final nanocomposites formed are: Pd/GO, Pd/Fe₃O₄/GO, Pd/CNT/GO, and Pd/CNT/Fe₃O₄/GO. Key intermediates were analysed using ATR FTIR for the confirmation of the modification. Additionally, all composites and their precursors underwent electron microscopic analysis to visually assess composite morphologies and the size distribution of deposited nanoparticles. The Fe₃O₄ and Pd nanoparticles were indistinguishable from each other in their spherical shape and particle diameters, which were no bigger than 32 nm. From the TGA, incorporation of Fe₃O₄, CNT and finally Pd into the nanocomposites increased total thermal stability in terms of mass percentage lost over the temperature programme. GO showed significant decomposition, with all nanocomposites remaining relatively stable up to 120 °C. ICP OES results showed total Pd content by mass percentage for each final composite, varied from 7.9% to 9.1% mass Pd/collective mass. XPS confirmed the expected elemental compositions of composites according to their structures and the Pd⁰ : Pd^II ratios are obtained. The nanocomposites were tested for the catalytic reduction of nitrophenols. Pd/CNT/Fe₃O₄/GO gave the highest TOF′ for the reduction of 4-NP and 2-NP. For the reduction of 3-NP, Pd/GO showed the highest TOF′. Nitrophenol's pK_a and catalyst TOF′ correlated in a direct proportional relationship for Pd/GO and Pd/Fe₃O₄/GO. It was found that Pd⁰ surpassed Pd^II in catalytic activity. Reduction of Pd^II to Pd⁰ took place during the first catalytic cycle.
