A Review of Metal-Organic Frameworks Derived Hollow-Structured Photocatalysts: Synthesis and Applications

Photocatalysis is a most important approach to addressing global energy shortages and environmental issues due to its environmentally friendly and sustainable properties. The key to realizing efficient photocatalysis relies on developing appropriate catalysts with high efficiency and chemical stability. Among various photocatalysts, Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hollow-structured materials have drawn increased attention in photocatalysis based on advantages like more active sites, strong light absorption, efficient transfer of pho-induced charges, excellent stability, high electrical conductivity, and better biocompatibility. Specifically, MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials are widely utilized in photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2RR), hydrogen evolution (HER), nitrogen fixation (NRR), degradation, and other reactions. This review starts with the development story of MOFs, the commonly adopted synthesis strategies of MOFs-derived hollow materials, and the latest research progress in various photocatalytic applications are also introduced in detail. Ultimately, the challenges of MOFs-derived hollow-structured materials in practical photocatalytic applications are also prospected. This review holds great potential for developing more applicable and efficient MOFs-derived hollow-structured photocatalysts.

Adsorbent based on MOF-5/cellulose aerogel composite for adsorption of organic dyes from wastewater

Industries persistently contribute to environmental pollution by releasing a multitude of harmful substances, including organic dyes, which represent a significant hazard to human health. As a result, the demand for effective adsorbents in wastewater treatment technology is steadily increasing so as to mitigate or eradicate these environmental risks. In response to this challenge, we have developed an advanced composite known as MOF-5/Cellulose aerogel, utilizing the Pampas plant as a natural material in the production of cellulose aerogel. Our investigation focused on analyzing the adsorption and flexibility characteristics of this novel composite for organic dye removal. Additionally, we conducted tests to assess the aerogel's reusability and determined that its absorption rate remained consistent, with the adsorption capacity of the MOF-5/cellulose aerogel composite only experiencing a marginal 5% reduction. Characterization of the material was conducted through XRD analysis, revealing the cubic structure of MOF aerogel particles under scanning electron microscopy. Our study unequivocally demonstrates the superior adsorption capabilities of the MOF-5/cellulose aerogel composite, particularly evident in its efficient removal of acid blue dye, as evaluated meticulously using UV-Vis spectrophotometric techniques. Notably, our findings revealed an impressive 96% absorption rate for the anionic dye under acidic pH conditions. Furthermore, the synthesized MOF-5/cellulose aerogel composite exhibited Langmuir isotherm behavior and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics during the absorption process. With its remarkable absorption efficiency, MOF-5/cellulose aerogel composites are poised to emerge as leading adsorbents for water purification and various other applications.

Dramatic change in the properties of magnetite-modified MOF particles depending on the synthesis approach

Iron-containing metal-organic frameworks are promising Fenton catalysts. However, the absence of additional modifiers has proven difficult due to the low reaction rates and the inability to manipulate the catalysts. We hypothesize that the production of iron oxide NPs in the presence of a metal-organic framework will increase the rate of the Fenton reaction and lead to the production of particles that can be magnetically manipulated without changing the structure of the components. A comprehensive approach lead to a metal organic framework using the example of MIL-88b (Materials of Institute Lavoisier) modified with iron oxides NPs: formulation of iron oxide in the presence of MIL-88b and vice versa. The synthesis of MIL-88b consists of preparing a complexation compound with the respective structure and addition of terephthalic acid. The synthesis of MIL-88b facilitates to control the topology of the resulting material. Both methods for composite formulation lead to the preservation of the structure of iron oxide, however, a more technologically complex approach to obtaining MIL-88b in the presence of Fe3O4 suddenly turned out to be the more efficient for the release of iron ions.

Adsorption of diazinon from aqueous solution using metal organic framework and functionalized graphene: Comparison of BBD, ANN models

In the present study, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and aminated graphitic carbonaceous structure (ACS-RGO) through chemical synthesis prepared by a simple precipitation method and used for diazinon removal. Several techniques such as XRD , FESEM and FTIR were applied for identification of MOF-5 and ACS-RGO. Also, response surface methodology (RSM) was employed in this work to look at the effectiveness of diazinon adsorption. To forecast pesticide removal, we applied artificial neural network (ANN) and Box-Behnken Design (BBD) models. For the ANN model, a sensitivity analysis was also performed. The effect of independent variables like solution pH, various concentrations of diazinon, MOFs and ACS-RGO adsorbent dose and contact time were assessed to find out the optimum conditions. Based on the model prediction, the optimal condition for adsorption ACS-RGO and MOF-5 were determined to be pH 6.6 and 6.6, adsorbent dose of 0.59 and 0.906 g/L, and mixing time of 52.15 and 36.96 min respectively. These conditions resulted in 96.69% and 80.62% diazinon removal using ACS-RGO and MOF-5, respectively. Isotherm studies proved the adsorption of ACS-RGO and MOF-5 following the Langmuir isotherm model for diazinon removal. Diazinon removal followed by the pseudo-second and Pseudo-first order kinetics model provides a better fit for analyzing the kinetic data associated with pesticide adsorption for ACS-RGO and MOF-5, respectively. Based on the obtained results, the predicted values for the efficiency of diazinon removal with the ANN and BBD were similar (R2=0.98). Therefore, two models were able to predict diazinon removal by ACS-RGO and MOF-5.

Smartphone-Assisted EY@MOF-5-Based Dual-Emission Fluorescent Sensor for Rapid On-Site Detection of Daclatasvir and Nitenpyram

Fluorescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising sensing materials with tunable and robust structural properties and remarkable luminescent capabilities. In this study, a novel dual-emission fluorescent metal-organic framework (EY@MOF-5) composite is synthesized by a one-pot bottle-around-ship approach. Eosin Y (EY) is encapsulated in MOF-5 to enhance its fluorescence properties and selectivity, effectively addressing typical MOF-5 limitations. EY@MOF-5 serves as a versatile dual-functional fluorescent sensor for two different analytes, daclatasvir (DCT) and nitenpyram (NTP), showing an impressive linear range of 10-200 nM and 0.1-300 μM, with detection limits of 233 pM and 65 nM, respectively. The established method is ultrafast, highly sensitive, and extremely selective for DCT and NTP detection in complex biological and food samples. Fluorescence results are compared and validated with the recommended UPLC method. Then, a smartphone-integrated sensing system is introduced for on-site, real-time, and quantitative analysis of DCT and NTP. The smartphone-assisted intelligent sensing method manifests promising results for DCT and NTP monitoring in biological and food samples, demonstrating its promising potential for the on-site detection of biologically and environmentally significant analytes.

Storage and Diffusion of Carbon Dioxide in the Metal Organic Framework MOF-5─A Semi-empirical Molecular Dynamics Study

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing attention due to their high porosity for exceptional gas storage applications. MOF-5 belongs to the family of isoreticular MOFs (IRMOFs) and consists of Zn4O6+ clusters linked by 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate. Due to the large number of atoms in the unit cell, molecular dynamics simulation based on density functional theory has proved to be too demanding, while force field models are often inadequate to model complex host-guest interactions. To overcome this limitation, an alternative semi-empirical approach using a set of approximations and extensive parametrization of interactions called density functional tight binding (DFTB) was applied in this work to study CO2 in the MOF-5 host. Calculations of pristine MOF-5 yield very good agreement with experimental data in terms of X-ray diffraction patterns as well as mechanical properties, such as the negative thermal expansion coefficient and the bulk modulus. In addition, different loadings of CO2 were introduced, and the associated self-diffusion coefficients and activation energies were investigated. The results show very good agreement with those of other experimental and theoretical investigations. This study provides detailed insights into the capability of semi-empirical DFTB-based molecular dynamics simulations of these challenging guest@host systems. Based on the comparison of the guest-guest pair distributions observed inside the MOF host and the corresponding gas-phase reference, a liquid-like structure of CO2 can be deduced upon storage in the host material.

Recent advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks as nanocarriers for triggered release of anticancer drugs: Brief history, biomedical applications, challenges and future perspective

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a promising biomedical material due to its unique features such as high surface area, pore volume, variable pore size, flexible functional groups, and excellent efficiency for drug loading. In this review, we explored the use of novel and smart metal organic frameworks as drug delivery vehicles to discover a safer and more controlled mode of drug release aiming to minimize their side effects. Here, we systematically discussed the background of MOFs following a thorough review on structural and physical properties of MOFs, their synthesis techniques, and the important characteristics to establish a strong foundation for future research. Furthermore, the current status on the potential applications of MOF-based stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems, including pH-, ion-, temperature-, light-, and multiple responsive systems for the delivery of anticancer drugs has also been presented. Lastly, we discuss the prospects and challenges in implementation of MOF-based materials in the drug delivery. Therefore, this review will help researchers working in the relevant fields to enhance their understanding of MOFs for encapsulation of various drugs as well as their stimuli responsive mechanism.

Recent Developments in Sonochemical Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Ultrasounds are commonly used in medical imaging, solution homogenization, navigation, and ranging, but they are also a great energy source for chemical reactions. Sonochemistry uses ultrasounds and thus realizes one of the basic concepts of green chemistry, i.e., energy savings. Moreover, reduced reaction time, mostly using water as a solvent, and better product yields are among the many factors that make ultrasound-induced reactions greener than those performed under conventional conditions. Sonochemistry has been successfully implemented for the preparation of various materials; this review covers sonochemically synthesized nanoporous materials. For instance, sonochemical-assisted methods afforded ordered mesoporous silicas, spherical mesoporous silicas, periodic mesoporous organosilicas, various metal oxides, biomass-derived activated carbons, carbon nanotubes, diverse metal-organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks. Among these materials, highly porous samples have also been prepared, such as garlic peel-derived activated carbon with an apparent specific surface area of 3887 m2/g and MOF-177 with an SSA of 4898 m2/g. Additionally, many of them have been examined for practical usage in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, and energy storage-related applications, yielding satisfactory results.

Comparative removal of hazardous cationic dyes by MOF-5 and modified graphene oxide

Among cationic dyes, malachite green (MG) is commonly used for dying purposes and also as an inhibitor in aquaculture, food, health, and chemical industries due to its cytotoxic effects. Therefore, MG removal is essential to keep the ecosystem and human health safety. Adsorption is a viable and versatile option and exploring efficient adsorbents have high priority. Herein, MOF-5 and aminated corn Stover reduced graphene oxide (ACS-RGO) of typical adsorbents of metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) and carbon-based classes were studied for MG removal. MOF-5 and ACS-RGO had a specific surface area and total pore volume of 507.4 and 389.0 m2/g, and 0.271 cm3/g and 0.273 cm3/g, respectively. ACS-RGO was superior for MG adsorption and the kinetic rate coefficient for ACS-RGO was ~ 7.2 times compared to MOF-5. For ACS-RGO, MG removal remained high (> 94%) in a wide range of pH. However, dye removal was pH-dependent for MOF-5 and increased from ~ 32% to ~ 67% by increasing pH from 4 to 12. Increasing dye concentration from 25 mg/L to 100 mg/L decreased adsorption by MOF-5 and ACS-RGO for ~ 30% and 7%, respectively. Dye removal was evident in a few tens of seconds after adding ACS-RGO at doses above 0.5 g/L. A significant loss of 46% in adsorption was observed by decreasing MOF-5 mass from 1 to 0.1 g/L. ACS-RGO removed MG in multilayer with an exceptional adsorption capacity of 1088.27 mg/g. In conclusion, ACS-RGO, and MOF-5 showed promising kinetic rates and adsorption capacities toward MG.

Synthesis of NMOF-5 Using Microwave and Coating with Chitosan: A Smart Biocompatible pH-Responsive Nanocarrier for 6-Mercaptopurine Release on MCF-7 Cell Lines

Cancer is one of the most difficult diseases to treat, threatening the lives of millions of people today. So far, various methods have been used to treat cancer, each having its drawbacks. One of these methods is treatment with anticancer drugs, which unfortunately have severe side effects. One of the causes of these complications is the nonspecific effects of anticancer drugs, which attack normal cells in addition to cancer cells and damage healthy tissues. In this study, we are trying to reduce the side effects and increase the efficacy of the drug by providing smart drug delivery. The metal-organic framework (MOF) was rapidly synthesized using a microwave method and at the nanoscale. The particle size of NMOF-5 was 18-20 nm, and its surface area was 2690 m²·g^-1. A chitosan polymer coating was formed on the nanocarrier after 6-mercaptopurine was introduced. The biocompatible nanocarrier exhibited a high capacity to adsorb the drug. The biocompatible nanocarrier slowly and uniformly released 96.78% of the drug in a simulated solution at pH 5 and 20.52% at pH 7.4. This showed that CS-6-MP-NMOF-5 released the drug smartly and pH-sensitively. The stability of the biocompatible nanocarrier was studied at different pH values and remained stable at pH 5 for up to 48 h. The toxicity study of the MCF-7 cell line at different concentrations for 24 h showed the excellent performance of the biocompatible nanocarrier compared to the free drug in terms of toxicity to breast cancer cells.

MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 nanotube composite material is used for the solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs under the synergy of multiple interactions

Increasing the adsorption sites and effective interactions between sorbents and the targets can improve the solid-phase extraction (SPE) efficiency. Herein, based on the advantages of MOFs and TiO₂ nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs), an MIL-101(Fe)@TiO₂ NT composite was prepared and applied to extract non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from water samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Through characterization, it was established that MIL-101(Fe) was effectively composited on the surface and inside the TiO₂ nanotubes, increasing effective adsorption sites. The obtained composite material well retains the structure and functional groups of the two original materials, and while retaining the original force with the target, it achieves a synergistic effect and produces more interactions with the target. Therefore, the extraction efficiency was greatly improved. The recovery efficiency reached 97.7-105.1% with an RSD of less than 6.71%, the detection limit was 0.1-0.2 μg L^-1, and the linear range was 1-200 μg L^-1 with a determination coefficient of 0.9972-0.9994. Owing to the stability of the two original materials, the composite material could be recycled and reused to extract NSAIDs up to 15 times without a loss of the recovery rate. Satisfactory results were obtained when it was used to extract NSAIDs from the Yellow River. These results indicate that the synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@TiO₂ NT material is a promising sorbent to extract NSAIDs at trace concentrations with high efficiency and long lifetimes.

Advances in Microwave Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Usually, porous materials are synthesized by using conventional electric heating, which can be energy- and time-consuming. Microwave heating is commonly used in many households to quickly heat food. Microwave ovens can also be used as powerful devices in the synthesis of various porous materials. The microwave-assisted synthesis offers a simple, fast, efficient, and economic way to obtain many of the advanced nanomaterials. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the microwave-assisted synthesis of diverse groups of nanoporous materials including silicas, carbons, metal-organic frameworks, and metal oxides. Microwave-assisted methods afford highly porous materials with high specific surface areas (SSAs), e.g., activated carbons with SSA ≈3100 m² g^-1 , metal-organic frameworks with SSA ≈4200 m² g^-1 , covalent organic frameworks with SSA ≈2900 m² g^-1 , and metal oxides with relatively small SSA ≈300 m² g^-1 . These methods are also successfully implemented for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silicas and carbons as well as spherically shaped nanomaterials. Most of the nanoporous materials obtained under microwave irradiation show potential applications in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery, among others.

Metal-organic frameworks for advanced drug delivery

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), comprised of organic ligands and metal ions/metal clusters via coordinative bonds are highly porous, crystalline materials. Their tunable porosity, chemical composition, size and shape, and easy surface functionalization make this large family more and more popular for drug delivery. There is a growing interest over the last decades in the design of engineered MOFs with controlled sizes for a variety of biomedical applications. This article presents an overall review and perspectives of MOFs-based drug delivery systems (DDSs), starting with the MOFs classification adapted for DDSs based on the types of constituting metals and ligands. Then, the synthesis and characterization of MOFs for DDSs are developed, followed by the drug loading strategies, applications, biopharmaceutics and quality control. Importantly, a variety of representative applications of MOFs are detailed from a point of view of applications in pharmaceutics, diseases therapy and advanced DDSs. In particular, the biopharmaceutics and quality control of MOFs-based DDSs are summarized with critical issues to be addressed. Finally, challenges in MOFs development for DDSs are discussed, such as biostability, biosafety, biopharmaceutics and nomenclature.

Understanding entrapped molecular photosystem and metal-organic framework synergy for improved solar fuel production

Artificial photosystems assembled from molecular complexes, such as the photocatalyst fac-ReBr(CO)3(4,4'-dcbpy) (dcbpy = dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine) and the photosensitiser Ru(bpy)2(5,5'-dcbpy)Cl2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), are a wide-spread approach for solar fuel production. Recently metal-organic framework (MOF) entrapping of such complexes was demonstrated as a promising concept for catalyst stabilisation and reaction environment optimisation in colloidal-based CO2 reduction. Building on this strategy, here we examined the influence of MIL-101-NH2(Al) MOF particle size, the electron donor source, and the presence of an organic base on the photocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction performance, and the differences to homogeneous systems. A linear relation between smaller scaffold particle size and higher photocatalytic activity, longer system lifetimes for benign electron donors, and increased turnover numbers (TONs) with certain additive organic bases, were determined. This enabled understanding of key molecular catalysis phenomena and synergies in the nanoreactor-like host-guest assembly, and yielded TONs of ∼4300 over 96 h of photocatalysis under optimised conditions, surpassing homogeneous TON values and lifetimes.

Metal organic framework-derived C-doped ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite catalysts for enhanced photodegradation of Rhodamine B

A series of C-doped ZnO/TiO₂ composites with various molar ratios of ZnO to TiO₂ were synthesized by one-step controllable pyrolysis of Zn/Ti bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Zn/Ti-MOF). The Zn/Ti-MOF was prepared using a facile microwave hydrothermal method. Electron microscopic analysis proved that the composites presented regularity cubic morphology with an edge length of about 1 μm and the C atoms were successfully doped into ZnO/TiO₂ composites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement results confirmed the C-doping in the ZnO/TiO_2. Comparative experimental studies showed that 2% ZnO/TiO₂ composites prepared with the calcination temperature of 600℃ displayed the best photocatalytic degradation efficiency (94%) of RhB under the simulated sunlight irradiation. Cyclical experiment indicated the high stability and reusability of 2% ZnO/TiO₂ composites. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiments illustrated that the produced O₂^- served as the main active species for the efficient RhB removal. This work provides an efficient way for preparing C-doped bimetal oxides composites, which would have an important application prospect in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in environmental water.

Smart metal organic frameworks: focus on cancer treatment

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a prominent category of hybrid porous materials, have been broadly employed as controlled systems of drug delivery due to their inherent interesting properties.

Microwave Hydrothermally Synthesized Metal-Organic Framework-5 Derived C-doped ZnO with Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B

C-doped ZnO particles have been successfully prepared by the calcination using microwave hydrothermally prepared metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5) as the precursor. MOF-5 was turned into C-doped ZnO through calcination at 500 °C, and its cubic shape was well-maintained. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies confirmed the C-doping in the ZnO. The as-prepared C-doped ZnO demonstrated a Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation efficiency of 98% in 2 h under an solar-simulated light irradiation, much higher than that of C-doped ZnO derived from MOF-5 synthesized by the ordinary hydrothermal method. The trapping experiment revealed that the crucial factors in the RhB removal were photogenerated h⁺ and •O₂^-.

Synthesis of CuO for Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis of Biomass

In this study, CuO was synthesized as a microwave absorber in the pyrolysis of a biomass model (sugarcane bagasse). CuO was synthesized for 5 min of irradiation using the following techniques: microwave (MW), ultrasound (US), combined mode (MW-US), and conduction heating (CH) as a reference material. The use of these treatments promotes changes in the morphology, as MW and US generate leaves and monolithic faceted morphologies, respectively. Changes were also generated in some textural characteristics such as crystal size, surface area, and volume-pore size. They were produced as a consequence of changes in the conditions during the crystallization stage produced by the different irradiation types. The microwave-assisted pyrolysis was performed aiming for the maximum liquid fraction (bio-oil) in the products. The reaction time, the size of the biomass, and the CuO synthesis method were also analyzed. The following particle size (ps) intervals were studied: ps < 0.5 mm, 0.5 mm < ps < 1.7 mm, 1.7 mm < ps < 3.5 mm. The best conditions at 1160 Watts in the microwave were: 4 min of reaction, particle size lower than 0.5 mm, and CuO synthesized by US. The use of CuO in the pyrolysis almost triples the amount of the obtained liquid fraction, when compared with the pyrolysis without the use of a microwave absorbent. The CuO was reduced to Cu2O and Cu after the pyrolysis. In this work, a reduction in the reaction times from hours to minutes was achieved during the synthesis of CuO and the pyrolysis biomass. The liquid fraction (bio-oil) can be raw material to obtain value-added chemical products or biofuels.

Investigation of Metal-Organic Framework-5 (MOF-5) as an Antitumor Drug Oridonin Sustained Release Carrier

Oridonin (ORI) is a natural active ingredient with strong anticancer activity. But its clinical use is restricted due to its poor water solubility, short half-life, and low bioavailability. The aim of this study is to utilize the metal organic framework material MOF-5 to load ORI in order to improve its release characteristics and bioavailability. Herein, MOF-5 was synthesized by the solvothermal method and direct addition method, and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), respectively. MOF-5 prepared by the optimal synthesis method was selected for drug-loading and in vitro release experiments. HepG2 cells were model cells. MTT assay, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining and Annexin V/PI assay were used to detect the biological safety of blank carriers and the anticancer activity of drug-loaded materials. The results showed that nano-MOF-5 prepared by the direct addition method had complete structure, uniform size and good biocompatibility, and was suitable as an ORI carrier. The drug loading of ORI@MOF-5 was 52.86% ± 0.59%. The sustained release effect was reliable, and the cumulative release rate was about 87% in 60 h. ORI@MOF-5 had significant cytotoxicity (IC50:22.99 μg/mL) and apoptosis effect on HepG2 cells. ORI@MOF-5 is hopeful to become a new anticancer sustained release preparation. MOF-5 has significant potential as a drug carrier material.
