Iron(III) β-diketonates: CVD precursors for iron oxide film formation

Solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of bisphenols using iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)3) as a new nanostructured sorbent: a proof of concept

In this work, we describe for the first time the use of iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)₃) as a novel sorbent for solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (SA-dμSPE) of bisphenols from water samples. The extraction procedure is based on the formation of nanoparticles in situ following the rapid injection of a methanolic solution of Fe(TTA)₃ into the stirred aqueous sample. Herein, the synthesis of Fe(TTA)₃ and study of the essential parameters of the preparative procedure are described. The optimized procedure allowed for efficient enrichment of bisphenols from various water samples, chosen as model contaminants and matrix, within 2.5 min. The sorbent was collected by centrifugation, dissolved in methanol, and injected to perform HPLC with spectrophotometric detection. The limits of detection and quantification obtained ranged from 1.0-3.1 and 3.1-7.5 μg L^-1, respectively. Intraday and interday precisions of <7% relative standard deviation (RSD) and <8% RSD with analyte recoveries ranging between 70-117% (103.8% on average) were obtained for the analysis of river water, wastewater treatment plant effluent, and bottled water.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Electrochemistry of Diferrocenyl β-Diketones, -Diketonates, and Pyrazoles

The synthesis of FcC(O)CH(R)C(O)Fc (Fc = Fe(η⁵-C₅H₄)(η⁵-C₅H₅); R = H, 5; ⁿBu, 7; CH₂CH₂(OCH₂CH₂)₂OMe, 9), [M(κ²O,O′-FcC(O)CHC(O)Fc)_n] (M = Ti, n = 3, 10; M = Fe, n = 3, 11; M = BF₂, n = 1, 12), and 1-R′-3,5-Fc₂-^cC₃HN₂ (R′ = H, 13; Me, 14; Ph, 15) is discussed. The solid-state structures of 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 15, and 16 ([TiCl₂(κ²O,O′-PhC(O)CHC(O)Ph)₂]) show that 7 and 9 exist in their β-diketo form. Compound 13 crystallizes as a tetramer based on a hydrogen bond pattern, including one central water molecule. The electrochemical behavior of 5–7 and 9–16 was studied by cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, showing that the ferrocenyls can separately be oxidized reversibly between −50 and 750 mV (5–7, 9, 12–15: two Fc-related events; 10, 11: six events, being partially superimposed). For complex 10, Ti-centered reversible redox processes appear at −985 (Ti^II/Ti^III) and −520 mV (Ti^III/Ti^IV). Spectro-electrochemical UV-Vis/NIR measurements were carried out on 5, 6, and 12, whereby only 12 showed an IVCT (intervalence charge-transfer) band of considerable strength (ν_max = 6250 cm⁻¹, Δν_½ = 4725 cm⁻¹, ε_max = 240 L·mol⁻¹·cm⁻¹), due to the rigid C₃O₂B cycle, enlarging the coupling strength between the Fc groups.

Inhibitory activity of metal-curcumin complexes on quorum sensing related virulence factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1

The use of metal complexes to reduce or inhibit virulence factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a promising strategy for the management and control of infections caused by this multidrug-resistant pathogen. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-quorum sensing activity of sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate-curcumin complex (Cu-CUR), iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate -curcumin complex (Fe-CUR), zinc(II) chloride-curcumin complex (Zn-CUR) and free curcumin (free-CUR) against P. aeruginosa PAO1. Metal-CUR complexes were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The effect of sub-MIC (1/4 and 1/16 MIC) concentrations of metal-CUR complexes and free-CUR on cell growth, biofilm formation, motility, alginate and pyocyanin production, H₂O₂ susceptibility and expression of lasI and lasR genes in PAO1 was determined. MIC of metal-CUR complexes and free-CUR was determined as 62.5 and 125 µg/ml, respectively. Metal-CUR complexes at concentration of 62.5 µg/ml significantly reduced the cell growth to 1.5%–3.3%. Although we did not measure the anti-QS activity of metal-CUR complexes directly against PAO1, they indicated anti-QS activity in C. violaceum CV026. Copper-CUR complex at the concentration of 1/4 MIC showed the greatest inhibitory effect on swarming and twitching motilities, biofilm formation, alginate and pyocyanin production, sensitivity to H₂O₂ and reduction in the expression levels of lasI and lasR genes (P < 0.001). Considering the biological effects of Cu-CUR complex and its inhibitory activity on virulence factors, it may be used as an effective compound for treatment and control of infections caused by P. aeruginosa.
