Abstract
This review basically concerned with the application of different Schiff bases (SB) based fluorimetric (turn-off and turn-on) and colorimetric chemosensors for the detection of heavy metal cations particularly Al(III), Fe(III), and Cr(III) ions. Chemosensors based on Schiff bases have exhibited outstanding performance in the detection of different metal cations due to their facile and in-expensive synthesis, and their excellent coordination ability with almost all metal cations and stabilize them in different oxidation states. Moreover, Schiff bases have also been used as antifungal, anticancer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and antimalarial etc. The Schiff base also can be used as an intermediate for the formation of various heterocyclic compounds. In this review, we have focused on the research work performed on the development of chemosensors (colorimetric and fluorometric) for rapid detection of trivalent metal cations particularly Al(III), Fe(III), and Cr(III) ions using Schiff base as a ligand during 2020-2022.

Abstract
Metal cations such as Zn2+, Al3+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ play important roles in biology, medicine, and the environment. However, when these are not maintained in proper concentration, they can be lethal to life. Therefore, selective sensing of metal cations is of great importance in understanding various metabolic processes, disease diagnosis, checking the purity of environmental samples, and detecting toxic analytes. Schiff base probes have been largely used in designing fluorescent sensors for sensing metal ions because of their easy processing, availability, fast response time, and low detection limit. Herein, an in-depth report on metal ions recognition by some Schiff base fluorescent sensors, their sensing mechanism, their practical applicability in cell imaging, building logic gates, and analysis of real-life samples has been presented. The metal ions having biological, industrial, and environmental significance are targeted. The compiled information is expected to prove beneficial in designing and synthesis of the related Schiff base fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
A new fluorescence probe (L) selectively detecting Al3+ ions was synthesized via the condensation reaction, and characterized using UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques. The limit of detection for Al3+ ions of this synthesized probe was found to be 9.29 × 10-7 M, while the Ka constant value was determined to be 1.64 × 104 M-1. The stoichiometric binding ratio of L-Al3+ was found to be 2:1 using the Job's plot method, and this ratio was also confirmed by 1H-NMR titration and mass spectrometry. The recyclability of the chemosensor was found by the fluorescence method through the addition of EDTA to the L-Al3+ solution. The obtained data showed that the carbazole-based Schiff base acted as an ideal chemosensor for Al3+. Carbazole-based Schiff base as a fluorescent sensor for detection of Al3+ was synthesized and characterized. The association constant (Ka) was calculated to be 1.64 × 104 M-1 and the limit of detection (LOD) value was determined to be 9.29 × 10-7 M. It was determined that th Schiff base was bound to Al3+ ions in 2:1 stoichiometric ratio. In the presence of other competitive metal cations, the selectivity of sensor L to Al3+ was not significantly affected.

Abstract
An easy prepared probe, BHMMP, was designed and synthesized, which displayed a significant fluorescence enhancement (over 38-fold) and obvious color change in the recognition of Al3+. The binding ratio of probe BHMMP to Al3+ was determined as 1:1, according to Job plot. The binding mechanism was fully clarified by the experiments, such as FT-IR spectrum, ESI-MS analysis, and 1H NMR titration. A DFT study further confirmed the binding mode of BHMMP to Al3+. The limit of detection (LOD) for Al3+ was determined as low as 0.70 µM, based on the fluorescence titration of BHMMP. Moreover, the results from real sample experiments, including real water samples, test papers, and cell images, well-demonstrated that BHMMP was capable of sensing Al3+ in environmental and biological systems.

Abstract
A novel acylhydrazone-based fluorescent sensor NATB was designed and synthesized for consecutive sensing of Al3+ and H2PO4-. NATB displayed fluorometric sensing to Al3+ and could sequentially detect H2PO4- by fluorescence quenching. The limits of detection for Al3+ and H2PO4- were determined to be 0.83 and 1.7 μM, respectively. The binding ratios of NATB to Al3+ and NATB-Al3+ to H2PO4- were found to be 1:1. The sequential recognition of Al3+ and H2PO4- by NATB could be repeated consecutively. In addition, the practicality of NATB was confirmed with the application of test strips. The sensing mechanisms of Al3+ and H2PO4- by NATB were investigated through fluorescence and UV-Visible spectroscopy, Job plot, ESI-MS, 1H NMR titration, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
In this work, an efficient and stable fluorescent probe for Al3+was established. The fluorescent probe based on the fluorescence 'turn-on' mode of zinc sulfide crystal composite zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnS/ZnO QDs). The ZnS/ZnO QDs were synthesized via two-step method using L-Cysteine (L-Cys) as a sulfur source and stabilizer. In the synthesis of ZnS/ZnO QDs, the fluorescence of zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs) decreased and its stability increased in aqueous solution after the addition of L-Cys. In addition, the as-synthesized ZnS/ZnO QDs shows fluorescent enhancement to Al3+. The ZnS/ZnO QDs based fluorescence 'turn-on' probe presented wide linear ranges (1 nM-8μM and 8-100μM). The availability of as-established sensing probe was also estimated by real water sample tests. Furthermore, the fluorescent enhancing mechanism was carried out by recording the fluorescent lifetime of samples, which might be related to the QDs dispersion and charge transfer weaken.

Abstract
Three Schiff base based probes are designed and synthesized by facile condensation of a commercially available fluorophore 2,6-diformyl-4-tert-butylphenol with 4-nitro-2-aminophenol (KP1), 2-aminophenol (KP2) and 4-tert-butyl-2-aminophenol (KP3) and are characterized using various spectral techniques. The probes exhibit high selectivity and sensitivity CN- and Al(III) ions with striking fluorescent signaling responses in H2O-DMSO (1:1, v/v) medium. The mechanism of the probes' detection of CN involves deprotonation of the phenolic OH group(s) followed by nucleophilic addition of CN- onto imine C-atom. The 1H NMR chemical shifts of the OH protons of 2-aminophenol moiety exhibits a linear correlation with the Hammett's substituent constants (σp), yielding a positive reaction constant (ρ). In KP1, the electron-withdrawing nitro substituent polarizes the imine bond to a larger extent than in KP2, resulting in easier addition of CN- to imine C-atom. The electron releasing tert-Bu substituent in KP3 produces the opposite effect leading to a sluggish addition reaction. The separately populated HOMO and LUMO in KP1 and a relatively lower HOMO-LUMO energy gap indicate substantial intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character, leading to weak fluorescence emission. The large reduction in HOMO-LUMO energy gap, in KP1, upon addition of cyanide is responsible for the greater enhancement in fluorescence with blue shift upon addition of CN-. Formation of tetrahedral Probe-Al(III) complex prevents the isomerization of imine bond, leading to enhancement in fluorescence and contribution from chelation enhanced fluorescence. As these probes show very low limits of detection of these ions, their practical utility has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
A simple S-S (disulfide)-bridged dimeric Schiff base probe, L, has been designed, synthesized, and successfully characterized for the specific recognition of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions as fluorometric and colorimetric "turn-on" responses in a dimethylformamide (DMF)-H2O solvent mixture, respectively. The probe L and each metal ion bind through a 1:1 complex stoichiometry, and the plausible sensing mechanism is proposed based on the inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer process (PET). The reversible chemosensor L showed high sensitivity toward Al3+ and Fe2+ ions, which was analyzed by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques up to nanomolar detection limits, 38.26 × 10-9 and 17.54 × 10-9 M, respectively. These experimental details were advocated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The practical utility of the chemosensor L was further demonstrated in electrochemical sensing, in vitro antimicrobial activity, molecular logic gate function, and quantification of the trace amount of Al3+ and Fe2+ ions in real water samples.
