The photochromism of a coordination polymer constructed by Cd(II) and the mono-substituted viologen ligand 1-(3,5-dicarboxylbenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium bromide

Multi-Stimuli-Responsive Chromic Behaviors of an All-in-One Viologen-Based Cd(II) Complex

A one-dimensional Cd(II) chain coordination polymer constructed by an electron-deficient viologen-anchored carboxylate ligand was successfully synthesized. Owing to the favorable stimuli-chromic properties of viologen, the title compound shows reversible photochromism, thermochromism, electrochromism, and naked-eye-detectable differentiable vapochromic response to different volatile amines. The chromic behaviors of it are ascribed to the formation of viologen radicals triggered by external stimuli. And the differentiated response to volatile amines is attributed to the size effect of the amines as well as the steric hindrance effect of forming α/β Cv-H···Namines interactions of the viologen unit to further affect the occurrence of electron transfer. Such an all-in-one crystalline material might have more practical applications in photoelectric, erasable inkless printing, light printing, and volatile amine detection fields.

Recent advances in the anti-counterfeiting applications of long persistent phosphors

Counterfeit products have infiltrated numerous regions worldwide, causing substantial damage to the financial interests of individuals, businesses, and countries. Moreover, counterfeit goods can pose a severe risk to human health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop effective anti-counterfeiting methods and authentication technologies. Persistent luminescence (PersL) materials show great potential for anti-counterfeiting applications due to their distinctive spatial and temporal dynamic spectrum performance. The unique luminescence properties of PersL materials enable the creation of optical codes with high capacity. In this perspective, we provide a summary of the latest advancements in anti-counterfeiting technology using long persistent phosphors. We discuss the various construction strategies of optical codes for anti-counterfeiting, which include multicolor luminescence, orthogonal luminescence, dynamic luminescence, and stimulus-response luminescence. In addition, we explore the mechanisms of PersL-based anti-counterfeiting materials and consider potential areas for future development to expand the applications of persistent phosphors.

Multistimuli-Responsive Materials Based on Zn(II)-Viologen Coordination Polymers and Their Applications in Inkless Print and Anticounterfeiting

Recently, stimuli-responsive materials have attracted great attention, while most of them respond to single or two stimuli. Thus, it is essential to design multifunctional stimuli-responsive materials and develop their applications. The strategy that constructing high-dimensional coordination polymers facilitates the application scope of a viologen-based photochromic system is put forward and confirmed for the first time. Herein, a novel multistimuli-responsive viologen-based Zn-MOF with a two-dimensional framework has been successfully designed and synthesized. Complex 1 exhibits chromic behavior under a variety of external stimuli such as 365 nm UV, X-rays, heat, electricity, and ethylamine. More interestingly, the crystal state of complex 1 displays dual fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission and emits a yellow afterglow when turning off the UV lamp. In addition, Eu(III)-functionalized hybrids, Eu³⁺@Zn-MOF, were prepared by coordinated postsynthetic modification based on viologen complexes for the first time. The sample of Eu³⁺@Zn-MOF inherits the photochromic characteristics of the viologen complexes and gives the distinctive fluorescence of the europium ions. Based on the multicolor switching of 1 and Eu³⁺@Zn-MOF, their possible practical utilization was successfully developed in the fields of inkless, erasable print media, electrochromic information tag printing, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting.

Metal-organic framework bearing new viologen ligand for ammonia and Cr2O7 2- sensing

Three anionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn₃(BTEC)₂(H₂O)(4-BCBPY)]·(H₂O)} _n (1-3) (BTEC^4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid anion, 4-BCBPY²⁺ = 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dication) were synthesized in the reaction of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid with different metal salts such as ZnNO₃, ZnCl₂, and ZnSO₄, under solvothermal conditions in the presence of 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium chloride. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that compounds 1, 2 and 3 have MOF structures based on binuclear metal building units, which are connected by two protonated BTEC^4- ligands and three zinc ions, and the viologen cation 4-BCBPY²⁺ is located in the channel to achieve charge balance. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 have good photosensitivity, respond to sunlight, UV light and blue ray, and turn blue. The D-A distance and π-π stacking distance of the discolored samples (1P, 2P and 3P) changed. In addition, the three compounds showed visible color changes to ammonia vapor, rapidly changing from white to blue. At the same time, the three compounds exhibited fluorescence quenching to ammonia vapor and Cr₂O₇ ^2-. It is further proved that compounds 1, 2 and 3 are fluorescent sensors with a low detection limit (for Cr₂O₇ ^2-: 10^-5 M) and high sensitivity for ammonia vapor and Cr₂O₇ ^2-. It was found that photochromic behavior, ammonia sensing properties can be tuned by the nature of metal salts.
