A Schiff base based on triphenylamine and thiophene moieties as a fluorescent sensor for Cr (III) ions: Synthesis, characterization and fluorescent applications

Extractive Spectrophotometric Detection of Sn(II) Using 6-bromo-3-hydroxy-2-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-4H-chromen-4-one

For the determination of tin(II) traces, an extractive spectrophotometric approach is devised. The applied method serves a powerful tool for determination of tin(II), involves the formation of yellow colored complex after the binding of 6-bromo-3-hydroxy-2-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-4H-chromen-4-one (BHMF) and tin(II) in 1:2 stiochiometry in a slightly acidic medium (HCl). The complex shows absorbance at 434 nm with respect of the blank reagent. The outcomes of spectral investigation for complexation showed a Beer's range of 0-1.3 μg Sn mL-1, molar absorptivity, specific absorptivity and Sandell's complex sensitivity are 9.291 × 104 L mol-1 cm-1, 0.490 mL g-1 cm-1 and 0.002040 μg cm-2 at 434 nm that was stable for two days. The interferences study results showed that this method is free from interferences, when tested with metal ions including Ag, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Hg, Mo, Re, Pt, Se,Ti, U, V, W and other common cations, anions, and complexing agents. The applied method is quite simple, highly selective, and sensitive with good re-producibility. This method has been satisfactorily by utilizing the proposed procedure, and its applicability has been tested by analyzing synthetic samples and an alloy sample of gunmetal. The procedure assumes this because of the scarcity of better methods for determining tin(II). The results are in good agreement with the certified value.

A Novel Naphthylidene-diimine Chemosensor for Selective Colorimetric and Fluorometric Detection of Al3+ and CN- Ions

A naphthylidene-diimine L2 was newly designed, and its structure was identified by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods. The effect of temperature, acid-base and light on enol-keto tautomerism in this Schiff base was evaluated by colorimetry, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Under irradiation 365 nm, L2 emitted yellow, orange and strong green emission in pure, basic and aqueous DMSO media (v/v, 1/1), respectively. Its ionochromic behavior against various cations (Fe3+, Al3+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Ba2+ and Ag+) and anions (F-, Cl-, CH3COO-, SO32-, S2O32-, HSO4-, H2PO4-, NO3-, CN-, and OH-) was investigated in aqueous DMSO media (v/v, 1/1) by UV-Vis and fluorescence experiments. Dark yellow color of L2 changed to colorless for Fe3+, Cr3+ and HSO4- ions, and turned to light yellow for Al3+ and Cu2+ ions, and to orange for CN- and OH- ions. According to UV-Vis data, the chemosensor displayed selective recognition towards Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, CN- and OH- with a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. At the excitation wavelength of 365 nm, L2 gave strong yellowish white emission (λem = 445 and 539 nm) in the presence of Al3+, and the intensity increased about 12.5 times. On the other hand, the chemosensor displayed one emission band at 452 nm and 450 nm in the presence of CN- and OH- with 1.9 fold and 2.3 fold fluorescence enhancement, respectively.

Advancements in the development of fluorescent chemosensors based on CN bond isomerization/modulation mechanistic approaches

The CN bond isomerization/modulation as a fluorescence signalling mechanism was explored by studying the photophysical properties of conformationally restricted molecules. From the beginning, the CN bond isomerization method has attracted the attention of researchers owing to its simplicity, high selectivity, and sensitivity in fluorescence evaluation. Continuous developments in the field of sensing using CN bond-containing compounds have been achieved via the customization of the isomerization process around the CN bond in numerous ways, and the results were obtained in the form of specific discrete photophysical changes. CN isomerization causes significant fluorescence enhancement in response to detected metal cations and other reactive species (Cys, Hys, ClO-, etc.) straightforwardly and effectively. This review sheds light on the process of CN bond isomerization/modulation as a signalling mechanism depending on fluorescence changes via conformational restriction. In addition, CN bond isomerization-based fluorescent sensors have yet to be well reviewed, although several fluorescent sensors based on this signalling mechanism have been reported. Therefore, CN-based fluorescent sensors are summarized in this review.

Synthesis, Structural, Magnetic and Computational Studies of A One-Dimensional Ferromagnetic Cu(II) Chain Assembled from a New Schiff Base Ligand

A new asymmetrically substituted ONOO Schiff base ligand N-(2′-hydroxy-1′-naphthylidene)-3-amino-2-naphthoic acid (nancH2) was prepared from the condensation of 2–hydroxy–1–naphthaldehyde and 3–amino–2–naphthoic acid. nancH2 reacts with Cu2(O2CMe)4·2H2O in the presence of Gd(O2CMe)3·6H2O to afford a uniform one-dimensional homometallic chain, [CuII(nanc)]n (1). The structure of 1 was elucidated via single crystal X-ray diffraction studies, which revealed that the Cu(II) ions adopt distorted square planar geometries and are coordinated in a tridentate manner by an [ONO] donor set from one nanc2− ligand and an O− of a bridging carboxylate group from a second ligand. The bridging carboxylato group of the nanc2− ligand adopts a syn, anti-η1:η1:μ conformation linking neighboring Cu(II) ions, forming a 1D chain. The magnetic susceptibility of 1 follows Curie–Weiss law in the range 45–300 K (C = 0.474(1) emu K mol-1, θ = +7.9(3) K), consistent with ferromagnetic interactions between S = ½ Cu(II) ions with g = 2.248. Subsequently, the data fit well to the 1D quantum Heisenberg ferromagnetic (QHFM) chain model with g = 2.271, and J = +12.3 K. DFT calculations, implementing the broken symmetry approach, were also carried out on a model dimeric unit extracted from the polymeric chain structure. The calculated exchange coupling via the carboxylate bridge (J = +13.8 K) is consistent with the observed ferromagnetic exchange between neighbouring Cu(II) centres.

Turn-off detection of Cr(III) with chelation enhanced fluorescence quenching effect by a naphthyl hydrazone Shiff base chemosensor

A thiophene substituted naphthyl hydrazone derivative NHT was synthesized using a one-step route for the detection of trivalent chromium (Cr³⁺). UV-visible absorption and emission spectra, density functional theory calculations as well as ¹H NMR titration confirmed that the probe underwent a turn-off response via the chelation enhanced fluorescence quenching effect upon exposure to Cr³⁺ and the NHT-Cr³⁺ complex was formed at a 1:1 binding stoichiometry. NHT exhibited a fast response rate of 2.3 min in buffer solution and a relatively low limit of detection of 41 nM. In addition, the Schiff base chemosensor exhibited excellent selectivity with high affinity towards Cr³⁺ in the presence of other competing cations. Bioimaging of the probe in PC3 cells further demonstrated the potential real life application of the probe in detecting Cr³⁺.

Thiophene-Appended Benzothiazole Compounds for Ratiometric Detection of Copper and Cadmium Ions with Comparative Density Functional Theory Studies and Their Application in Real-Time Samples

A thirst for the development of a simple fluorescence probe for enhanced sensing application has been achieved by synthesizing a stupendous thiophene-appended benzothiazole-conjugated compound L2. The synthesized compound L2 was characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry techniques. Furthermore, a photophysical property of L1 and L2 reveals the enhanced emission spectrum of L2 because of a restricted spin-orbital coupling as a result of increased conjugation compared to the ligand L1. Therefore, comparative studies were undertaken for L1 and L2. Henceforth, L2 was deployed for the ratiometric detection of Cd²⁺ ions in THF:water and L1 for the detection of Cu²⁺ ions in THF medium. The chemosensor L2 shows an outstanding water tolerance up to 60% and is stable between pH 2 and 7. This level of water tolerance and stability make L2 a suitable probe for analyzing real-time and biological samples. While the cadmium ion was added to L2, there was a significant red shift in emission from 496 to 549 nm, which indicates the controlled ICT due to complex formation. The metal-ligand complexation was also confirmed by noticing a decreased band gap of metal complex compared to the ligand as calculated using Tauc's plot with solid-phase UV data. The stoichiometric ratio was obtained by Job's plot that exhibited a 1:1 ratio of L2 and Cd²⁺ ions, and the limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 2.25 nM by the photoluminescence spectroscopic technique. The fluorescence lifetime of both L2 and L2-Cd²⁺ was found to be 58.3 ps and 0.147 ns, respectively. Alongside, the colorimetric-assisted ratiometric detection of Cu²⁺ by L1 with 1:2 stoichiometric ratio having an LOD of 1.06 × 10^-7 M was also performed. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the probe L2 in sensing cadmium was tested in sewage water and vegetable extract; the recovery was approximately 98 and 99%, respectively. The experimental data were supported by theoretical investigation of structures of L1, L2, L1-Cu²⁺ , and L2-Cd²⁺ , complex formation, charge transfer mechanism, and band gap measurements done by quantum chemical density functional theory calculations.

Mitochondria-Targeted Luminescent Organotin(IV) Complexes: Synthesis, Photophysical Characterization, and Live Cell Imaging

Five fluorescent ONO donor-based organotin(IV) complexes, [Sn^IV(L^1-5)Ph₂] (1-5), were synthesized by the one-pot reaction method and fully characterized spectroscopically including the single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 2-4. Detailed photophysical characterization of all compounds was performed. All the compounds exhibited high luminescent properties with a quantum yield of 17-53%. Additionally, the results of cellular permeability analysis suggest that they are lipophilic and easily absorbed by cells. Confocal microscopy was used to examine the live cell imaging capability of 1-5, and the results show that the compounds are mostly internalized in mitochondria and exhibit negligible cytotoxicity at imaging concentration. Also, 1-5 exhibited high photostability as compared to the commercial dye and can be used in long-term real-time tracking of cell organelles. Also, it is found that the probes (1-5) are highly tolerable during the changes in mitochondrial morphology. Thus, this kind of low-toxic organotin-based fluorescent probe can assist in imaging of mitochondria within living cells and tracking changes in their morphology.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Carbazole-Based Schiff Base Capable of Detection of Al3+ in Organic/Aqueous Media

A new fluorescence probe (L) selectively detecting Al³⁺ ions was synthesized via the condensation reaction, and characterized using UV-Vis, FT-IR, ¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopic techniques. The limit of detection for Al³⁺ ions of this synthesized probe was found to be 9.29 × 10^-7 M, while the Ka constant value was determined to be 1.64 × 10⁴ M^-1. The stoichiometric binding ratio of L-Al³⁺ was found to be 2:1 using the Job's plot method, and this ratio was also confirmed by ¹H-NMR titration and mass spectrometry. The recyclability of the chemosensor was found by the fluorescence method through the addition of EDTA to the L-Al³⁺ solution. The obtained data showed that the carbazole-based Schiff base acted as an ideal chemosensor for Al³⁺. Carbazole-based Schiff base as a fluorescent sensor for detection of Al³⁺ was synthesized and characterized. The association constant (K_a) was calculated to be 1.64 × 10⁴ M^-1 and the limit of detection (LOD) value was determined to be 9.29 × 10^-7 M. It was determined that th Schiff base was bound to Al³⁺ ions in 2:1 stoichiometric ratio. In the presence of other competitive metal cations, the selectivity of sensor L to Al³⁺ was not significantly affected.

A Review on Recent Progress in Organic Fluorimetric and Colorimetric Chemosensors for the Detection of Cr3+/6+Ions

Chromium occurs in the environment primarily in two valence states, trivalent Cr3+ and hexavalent Cr6+, which have different physicochemical and biochemical properties. However, the higher concentration of Cr3+/6+ can cause various adverse effects on human health. Therefore, detecting Cr3+/6+ ions is important in various samples. Colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors are the most powerful tools for the detection of Cr3+/6+ ions. These chemosensors have excellent bioimaging capability and significant sensitivity and selectivity. In this article, different colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors based on organic compounds, including Schiff base, antipyrine, diarylethene, pyrene, crown ether, dansyl, pyridine, thiazole, coumarin, boradiazaindacene, rhodamine, imidazole, hydrazone, and other functional groups for detection of Cr3+/6+ ions have been reviewed, classified them according to different fluorophore and recognition mode. I hope this article will help the readers for the future design of highly effective, sensitive, and selective chemosensors for the detection and determination of Cr3+/6+ ions.

Triphenylamine-based small-molecule fluorescent probes

Ammonia with the three hydrogens substituted by phenyls is known as triphenylamine (TPA), and is one of the most useful compounds because of its vast practical applications. Chemists have produced thousands of TPA derivatives to date. Because of its biocompatibility and structural features, it has been widely used in the fields of molecular recognition, molecular imaging, materials chemistry, and also in biology and medical science. Its strong electron-donating ability encourages scientists to produce different types of probes for molecular recognition. This review is based on recent developments and advances in TPA-based small molecular fluorescent probes within the time period 2010-2021. This extensive review may expedite improvements in more advanced fluorescent probes for vast and stimulating applications in the future.

A Comprehensive Review on Thiophene Based Chemosensors

The recognition and sensing of various analytes in aqueous and biological systems by using fluorometric or colorimetric chemosensors possessing high selectivity and sensitivity, low cost has gained enormous attention. Furthermore, thiophene derivatives possess exceptional photophysical properties compared to other heterocycles, and therefore they can be employed in chemosensors for analyte detection. In this review, we have tried to explore the design and detection mechanism of various thiophene-based probes, practical applicability, and their advanced models (design guides), which could be thoughtful for the synthesis of new thiophene-based probes. This review provides an insight into the reported chemosensors (2008-2020) for thiophene scaffold as effective emission and absorption-based chemosensors.

Green synthesis of fluorescent Schiff bases: chemo-photophysical characterization, X-ray structures, and their bioimaging

Two Schiff bases have been prepared by mechano- and ultrasound-assisted synthesis and their structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction. One of them showed good fluorescent cell staining in vitro and low cytotoxicity.

Platinum Complexes from C-H Activation of Sterically Hindered [C^N] Donor Benzothiophene Imine Ligands: Synthesis and Photophysical Properties

Primary amines and benzothiophene-3-carboxaldehyde were reacted to give four large, bulky imine ligands. These imine ligands were reacted with a tetramethyl platinum dimer and by heteroatom-assisted C-H activation, both monometalated compounds and bismetalated compounds were synthesized. In all cases, five-membered platinacycles were formed. The compounds were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and one bismetalated compound was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The UV-vis absorption and emission spectra and the excited-state lifetimes were recorded for these complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT calculations were performed to aid in the assignment of the absorption and emission spectra of the newly synthesized complexes.
