Existence of stronger C H···π(chelate ring) interaction compared to C H···π(arene) interactions in the supramolecular assembly of dinuclear iron(III) Schiff base complexes: A theoretical insight

Structural Characterization of Multicomponent Crystals Formed from Diclofenac and Acridines

Multicomponent crystals containing diclofenac and acridine (1) and diclofenac and 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridine (2) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The single-crystal XRD measurements showed that compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group as a salt cocrystal with one acridinium cation, one diclofenac anion, and one diclofenac molecule in the asymmetric unit, whereas compound 2 crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group as an ethanol solvate monohydrate salt with one 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium cation, one diclofenac anion, one ethanol molecule, and one water molecule in the asymmetric unit. In the crystals of the title compounds, diclofenac and acridines ions and solvent molecules interact via N–H⋯O, O–H⋯O, and C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds, as well as C–H⋯π and π–π interactions, and form heterotetramer bis[⋯cation⋯anion⋯] (1) or heterohexamer bis[⋯cation⋯ethanol⋯anion⋯] (2). Moreover, in the crystal of compound 1, acridine cations and diclofenac anions interact via N–H⋯O hydrogen bond, C–H⋯π and π–π interactions to produce blocks, while diclofenac molecules interact via C–Cl⋯π interactions to form columns. In the crystal of compound 2, the ethacridine cations interact via C–H⋯π and π–π interactions building blocks, while diclofenac anions interact via π–π interactions to form columns.

Synthesis and characterization of a mononuclear zinc(ii) Schiff base complex: on the importance of C-H⋯π interactions

A zinc(ii) complex, [ZnL(H₂O)]·H₂O {H₂L = 2,2′-[(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)]bis[6-ethoxyphenol]} has been synthesized and characterized by UV-vis and IR spectroscopy. The structure of the complex has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography and the noncovalent interactions characterized using Hirshfeld surface analysis. In addition to the conventional H-bonds involving the Zn-coordinated and non-coordinated water molecules, interesting C–H⋯π interactions between the H-atoms belonging to aliphatic part of the ligand (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl) and the Zn-coordinated aromatic rings are established. These interactions have been studied using DFT calculations (PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP) and characterized using molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces and the noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot index analyses.

The strength of the C–H⋯π interaction in the solid state of [ZnL(H₂O)]·H₂O has been evaluated using DFT calculations and also analysed using the MEP surface and NCI plot index computational tool.

Synthesis, Spectral Characterization, and In Vitro Cytotoxicity of Some Fe(III) Complexes Bearing Unsymmetrical Salen-Type Ligands Derived from 2-Hydroxynaphthaldehyde and Substituted Salicylaldehydes

Six Fe(III) complexes bearing unsymmetrical salen-type ligands derived from 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde and substituted salicylaldehydes were synthesized by coordinating the unsymmetrical salen-type ligands with FeCl3.6H2O. The synthetic complexes were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS), effective magnetic moments (μeff), and infrared (IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra. The spectroscopic data are in good agreement with the suggested molecular formulae of the complexes. Their cyclic voltammetric studies in acetonitrile solutions showed that the Fe(III)/Fe(II) reduction processes are electrochemically irreversible. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the obtained complexes was screened on human cancer cell lines KB (a subline of Hela tumor cell line) and HepG2 (a human liver cancer cell line) and a normal human cell line HEK-293 (Human Embryonic Kidney cell line). The results showed that the synthetic Fe(III) complexes are highly cytotoxic and quite selective. The synthetic complexes bearing unsymmetrical salen-type ligands with different substituted groups in the salicyl ring indicate different cytotoxicity.

Hydrogen bond mediated intermolecular magnetic coupling in mononuclear high spin iron(iii) Schiff base complexes: synthesis, structure and magnetic study with theoretical insight

The crystal structure and magnetic properties of two mononuclear iron(iii) Schiff base complexes, [FeL¹(NCS)₂] (1), HL¹ = 2-[1-[[2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethyl]imino]ethyl]phenol and [FeL²(N₃)Cl] (2), HL² = 2-(-1-(2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylimino)ethyl)-4-methylphenol are reported. Each complex contains a Fe(iii) ion surrounded by a N₃O Schiff base ligand and two NCS⁻ ligands (in 1) or one N₃⁻ and one Cl⁻ ligands (in 2). The magnetic properties can be well reproduced with zero field splittings in the high spin S = 5/2 Fe(iii) ions and weak intermolecular Fe–Fe interactions mediated by hydrogen bonds. This intermolecular antiferromagnetic interaction has been validated by using DFT calculations in complex 2. Moreover, the interaction energies of the H-bonded dimers in both complexes have been estimated using DFT calculations and characterized using a combination of QTAIM and NCI plot computational tools. Complexes 1 and 2 constitute two rare examples of Fe(iii) complexes with magnetic interactions through H-bonds.

H-Bond mediated magnetic interactions in mononuclear iron(iii) Schiff base complexes were studied experimentally and validated by using DFT calculations.
