Using the density of Kuiper Belt Objects to constrain their composition and formation history

Sputnik Planitia as an impactor remnant indicative of an ancient rocky mascon in an oceanless Pluto

Pluto's surface is dominated by the huge, pear-shaped basin Sputnik Planitia. It appears to be of impact origin, but modelling has not yet explained its peculiar geometry. We propose an impact mechanism that reproduces its topographic shape while also explaining its alignment near the Pluto-Charon axis. Using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to model realistic collisions, we provide a hypothesis that does not rely upon a cold, stiff crust atop a contrarily liquid ocean where a differentiated ~730 km ice-rock impactor collides at low-velocity into a subsolidus Pluto-like target. The result is a new geologic region dominated by impactor material, namely a basin that (in a 30° collision) closely reproduces the morphology of Sputnik Planitia, and a captured rocky impactor core that has penetrated the ice to accrete as a substantial, strength-supported mascon. This provides an alternative explanation for Sputnik Planitia's equatorial alignment and illustrates a regime in which strength effects, in low-velocity collisions between trans-Neptunian objects, lead to impactor-dominated regions on the surface and at depth.

The internal structure of Eris inferred from its spin and orbit evolution

The large Kuiper Belt object Eris is tidally locked to its small companion Dysnomia. Recently obtained bounds on the mass of Dysnomia demonstrate that Eris must be unexpectedly dissipative for it to have despun over the age of the solar system. Here, we show that Eris must have differentiated into an ice shell and rocky core to explain the dissipation. We further demonstrate that Eris's ice shell must be convecting to be sufficiently dissipative, which distinguishes it from Pluto's conductive shell. The difference is likely due to Eris's apparent depletion in volatiles compared with Pluto, perhaps as the result of a more energetic impact.

Slow evolution of Europa's interior: metamorphic ocean origin, delayed metallic core formation, and limited seafloor volcanism

Europa's ocean lies atop an interior made of metal and silicates. On the basis of gravity data from the Galileo mission, many argued that Europa's interior, like Earth, is differentiated into a metallic core and a mantle composed of anhydrous silicates. Some studies further assumed that Europa differentiated while (or soon after) it accreted, also like Earth. However, Europa probably formed at much colder temperatures, meaning that Europa plausibly ended accretion as a mixture containing water-ice and/or hydrated silicates. Here, we use numerical models to describe the thermal evolution of Europa's interior assuming low initial temperatures (~200 to 300 kelvin). We find that silicate dehydration can produce Europa's current ocean and icy shell. Rocks below the seafloor may remain cool and hydrated today. Europa's metallic core, if it exists, may have formed billions of years after accretion. Ultimately, we expect the chemistry of Europa's ocean to reflect protracted heating of the interior.

Neptune and Uranus: ice or rock giants?

Existing observations of Uranus and Neptune's fundamental physical properties can be fitted with a wide range of interior models. A key parameter in these models is the bulk rock:ice ratio and models broadly fall into ice-dominated (ice giant) and rock-dominated (rock giant) categories. Here we consider how observations of Neptune's atmospheric temperature and composition (H2, He, D/H, CO, CH4, H2O and CS) can provide further constraints. The tropospheric CO profile in particular is highly diagnostic of interior ice content, but is also controversial, with deep values ranging from zero to 0.5 parts per million. Most existing CO profiles imply extreme O/H enrichments of >250 times solar composition, thus favouring an ice giant. However, such high O/H enrichment is not consistent with D/H observations for a fully mixed and equilibrated Neptune. CO and D/H measurements can be reconciled if there is incomplete interior mixing (ice giant) or if tropospheric CO has a solely external source and only exists in the upper troposphere (rock giant). An interior with more rock than ice is also more compatible with likely outer solar system ice sources. We primarily consider Neptune, but similar arguments apply to Uranus, which has comparable C/H and D/H enrichment, but no observed tropospheric CO. While both ice- and rock-dominated models are viable, we suggest a rock giant provides a more consistent match to available atmospheric observations. Organic Components of Small Bodies in the Outer Solar System: Some Results of the New Horizons Mission

The close encounters of the Pluto–Charon system and the Kuiper Belt object Arrokoth (formerly 2014 MU₆₉) by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft in 2015 and 2019, respectively, have given new perspectives on the most distant planetary bodies yet explored. These bodies are key indicators of the composition, chemistry, and dynamics of the outer regions of the Solar System’s nascent environment. Pluto and Charon reveal characteristics of the largest Kuiper Belt objects formed in the dynamically evolving solar nebula inward of ~30 AU, while the much smaller Arrokoth is a largely undisturbed relic of accretion at ~45 AU. The surfaces of Pluto and Charon are covered with volatile and refractory ices and organic components, and have been shaped by geological activity. On Pluto, N₂, CO and CH₄ are exchanged between the atmosphere and surface as gaseous and condensed phases on diurnal, seasonal and longer timescales, while Charon’s surface is primarily inert H₂O ice with an ammoniated component and a polar region colored with a macromolecular organic deposit. Arrokoth is revealed as a fused binary body in a relatively benign space environment where it originated and has remained for the age of the Solar System. Its surface is a mix of CH₃OH ice, a red-orange pigment of presumed complex organic material, and possibly other undetected components.

Explaining the Galilean Satellites' Density Gradient by Hydrodynamic Escape

The Galilean satellites exhibit a monotonic decrease in density (and increase in ice mass fraction) with distance from Jupiter (Pollack & Fanale 1982). Whether this is because of the background conditions when they formed (Lunine & Stevenson 1982; Canup & Ward 2002; Mosqueira & Estrada 2003a; Ronnet et al. 2017), the process of accretion itself (Dwyer et al. 2013), or later loss due to tidal heating (Canup & Ward 2009), has been in dispute for forty years. We find that a hitherto largely neglected process - vapor loss driven by accretional heating (Kuramoto & Matsui 1994) - can reproduce the observed density trend for accretion timescales ≳300 kyr, consistent with gas-starved satellite formation models (Canup & Ward 2002, 2006). In this model both Io and Europa develop an early surface liquid water ocean. Vapor escape from this ocean causes the water inventories of Io and Europa to be completely and mostly lost, respectively. Isotopic fractionation arising from vapor loss means that Europa will develop a higher D/H ratio compared with Ganymede and Callisto. We make predictions that can be tested with in situ measurements of D/H of potential Europa plumes (Roth et al. 2014) by the Europa Clipper spacecraft, or infrared spectroscopic determinations (Clark et al. 2019) of D/H at all three bodies.

Color, composition, and thermal environment of Kuiper Belt object (486958) Arrokoth

The outer Solar System object (486958) Arrokoth (provisional designation 2014 MU₆₉) has been largely undisturbed since its formation. We studied its surface composition using data collected by the New Horizons spacecraft. Methanol ice is present along with organic material, which may have formed through irradiation of simple molecules. Water ice was not detected. This composition indicates hydrogenation of carbon monoxide-rich ice and/or energetic processing of methane condensed on water ice grains in the cold, outer edge of the early Solar System. There are only small regional variations in color and spectra across the surface, which suggests that Arrokoth formed from a homogeneous or well-mixed reservoir of solids. Microwave thermal emission from the winter night side is consistent with a mean brightness temperature of 29 ± 5 kelvin.
