Abstract
With the improvement of the hygiene awareness and pathogen prevention awareness of patients and medical staff, textiles with efficient and long-lasting pathogen inactivation effects are urgently needed. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has rapidly developed into a new type of antibacterial technology due to its high antibacterial activity and has received widespread attention. However, the commonly used photosensitizers are mostly inorganic nanomaterials, which have poor adhesion to textiles and are not environmentally or human friendly. Here, we report a strategy of preparation of a sunlight-driven rechargeable antibacterial textiles based on natural antibacterial agents, which can work in light and dark conditions. The prepared BD-PTL@wool has long-lasting antibacterial properties, can rapidly produce ROS, and can store sterilization activity under light irradiation, ensuring all-day bacterial killing (>99.95 % under light irradiation and >99.80 % under dark conditions after light irradiation). BD-PTL@wool has excellent reusability, and the antibacterial rate can still above 95 % after repeated use for 5 times. In addition, BD-PTL@wool has excellent hydrophilic, UV resistance, biocompatibility and can withstand 50 washing cycles. The successful application of this strategy in textile preparation broadens the research idea for exploring the application of green photosensitive antibacterial materials in textile field.

Abstract
While photodynamic inactivation (PDI) has emerged as a novel sterilization strategy for drinking water treatment that recently attracted tremendous attention, its efficiency needs to be further improved. In this study, we aimed to clarify the ultraefficient mechanism by which potassium iodide (KI) potentiates octyl gallate (OG)-mediated PDI against bacteria and biofilms in water. When OG (0.15 mM) and bacteria were exposed to blue light (BL, 420 nm, 210 mW/cm2), complete sterilization (>7.5 Log cfu/mL of killing) was achieved by the addition of KI (250 mM) within only 5 min (63.9 J/cm2). In addition, at lower doses of OG (0.1 mM) with KI (100 mM), the biofilm was completely eradicated within 10 min (127.8 J/cm2). The KI-potentiated mechanism involves in situ rapid photogeneration of a multitude of reactive oxygen species, especially hydroxyl radicals (•OH), reactive iodine species, and new photocytocidal substances (quinone) by multiple photochemical pathways, which led to the destruction of cell membranes and membrane proteins, the cleavage of genomic DNA and extracellular DNA within biofilms, and the degradation of QS signaling molecules. This multitarget synergistic strategy provided new insights into the development of an environmentally friendly, safe, and ultraefficient photodynamic drinking water sterilization technology.

Abstract
This study evaluated the synergistic antimicrobial activity of erythorbyl laurate (EL) and UV type-A (UVA). To investigate the mode of synergism, changes in gene expression and bacterial inactivation activity were examined. Individual treatments with EL (10 mM) or UVA caused a 1.9- or 0.5-log CFU/ml reduction respectively, whereas EL/UVA co-treatment resulted in a 5.5-log CFU/ml reduction in Escherichia coli viable cell numbers. Similarly, treatment with either EL (2 mM) or UVA for 30 min resulted in a 2.8- or 0.1-log CFU/ml reduction in Listeria innocua, respectively, whereas combined treatment with both EL and UVA resulted in a 5.4-log CFU/ml reduction. Measurements of gene expression levels showed that EL and UVA treatment synergistically altered the gene expression of genes related to bacterial membrane synthesis/stress response. However, addition of 10–50-fold excess concentration of exogenous antioxidant compared to EL reduced the synergistic effect of EL and UVA by approximately 1 log. In summary, the results illustrate that synergistic combination of EL and UVA enhanced membrane damage independent of the oxidative stress damage induced by UVA and thus illustrate a novel photo-activated synergistic antimicrobial approach for the inactivation of both the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Overall, this study illustrates mechanistic evaluation of a novel photochemical approach for food and environmental applications.

Antibacterial Activity of Caffeic Acid Combined with UV-A Light against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of caffeic acid (CA), which is a natural polyphenol, combined with UV-A light against the representative foodborne bacteria Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes. Data regarding the inactivation of these bacteria and its dependence on CA concentration, light wavelength, and light dose were obtained. E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium were reduced to the detection limit when treated with 3 mM CA and UV-A for 3 J/cm2 and 4 J/cm2, respectively, and 5 J/cm2 treatment induced 3.10 log reduction in L. monocytogenes. To investigate the mechanism for inactivation of Salmonella Typhimurium and L. monocytogenes, measurement of polyphenol uptake, membrane damage assessment, enzymatic activity assay, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were conducted. It was revealed that CA was significantly (P < 0.05) absorbed by bacterial cells, and UV-A light allowed a higher uptake of CA for both pathogens. Additionally, CA plus UV-A treatment induced significant (P < 0.05) cell membrane damage. In the enzymatic activity assay, the activities of both pathogens were reduced by CA, and a greater reduction occurred by use of CA plus UV-A. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images indicated that CA plus UV-A treatment notably destroyed the intercellular structure. In addition, antibacterial activity was also observed in commercial apple juice, which showed results similar to those obtained from phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), resulting in a significant (P < 0.05) reduction for all three pathogens without any changes in color parameters (L*, a*, and b*), total phenolic compounds, and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity. IMPORTANCE Photodynamic inactivation (PDI), which involves photoactivation of a photosensitizer (PS), is an emerging field of study, as it effectively reduces various kinds of microorganisms. Although there are several PSs that have been used for PDI, there is a need to find naturally occurring PSs for safer application in the food industry. Caffeic acid, a natural polyphenol found in most fruits and vegetables, has recently been studied for its potential to act as a novel photosensitizer. However, no studies have been conducted regarding its antibacterial activity depending on treatment conditions and its antibacterial mechanism. In this study, we closely examined the effectiveness of caffeic acid in combination with UV-A light for inactivating representative foodborne bacteria in liquid medium. Therefore, the results of this research are expected to be utilized as basic data for future application of caffeic acid in PDI, especially when controlling pathogens in liquid food processing.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has prompted a worldwide pandemic and poses a great threat to public safety and global economies. Most present personal protective equipment (PPE) used to intercept pathogenic microorganisms is deficient in biocidal properties. Herein, we present green nanofibers with effective antibacterial and antiviral activities that can provide sustainable bioprotection by continuously producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). The superiority of the design is that the nanofibers can absorb and store visible light energy and maintain the activity under light or dark environment. Moreover, the nanofibers can uninterruptedly release ROS in the absence of an external hydrogen donor, acting as a biocide under all weather conditions. A facile spraying method is proposed to rapidly deploy the functional nanofibers to existing PPE, such as protective suits and masks. The modified PPE exhibit stable ROS production, excellent capacity for storing activity potential, long-term durability, and high bactericidal (>99.9%) and viricidal (>99.999%) efficacies.

Abstract
Pinewood biochar (PBC)-supported metallic silver (Ago) was prepared via a one-step carbothermal reduction route (AgH) or a wet-chemistry reduction method (AgW). XRD and SEM confirmed Ago was soldered on PBC matrix. Low methylene blue (MB) sorption was observed for unsupported Ago nanoparticles (AgNP), AgH and AgW. Under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, net MB degradation by AgH (15.88 g kg-1) was higher than that of AgW (12.50 g kg-1) and AgNP (10.27 g kg-1). TOC removal percentages after degradation corresponded largely to reduction of MB concentrations in solution, indicating MB was dominantly mineralized. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed that MB was degraded by reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical (OH), superoxide radical (O2-) and singlet oxygen (1O2). The scavenging experiments further suggested that OH scavengers suppressed MB degradation to a greater extent than other quenchers. Compared to AgW, AgH possessed greater abundance of persistent free radicals, which enhance ROS generation. PBC could also improve separation of electron-hole (e--h+) pairs and enhance electron transfer ascribing to favorable carbon structure. Besides, PBC-Ago maintained good antimicrobial efficacy over E.coli DH5α. This work presented a facile carbothermal route to prepare Ago-based photocatalysts for dye removal and microbial inhibition in industrial wastewater.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate synergistic antibacterial activity based on a combination of UV-A light and three classes of food grade compounds: benzoic acid derivatives, cinnamic acid derivatives, and gallates. By using Escherichia coli O157:H7 as the model strain, it was observed that three cinnamic acid derivatives (ferulic acid, coumaric acid, and caffeic acid) and one benzoic acid derivative (2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid) presented strong synergistic antibacterial activity with UV-A light radiation, where 1 mM levels of these compounds plus with 15 min of UV-A light (total light dose of 6.1 cm-2) led to more than 7-log CFU mL-1 of bacterial inactivation. In contrast, synergistic antibacterial activity between UV-A light and most benzoic acid derivatives (benzoic acid, gallic acid, vanillic acid, and 2,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid) were only observed after higher concentrations of these compounds were applied (10 mM). Lastly, from the three gallates tested (methyl gallate, ethyl gallate, and propyl gallate), only propyl gallate showed strong antibacterial synergism with UV-A light, where 10 mM of propyl gallate plus 15 min of UV-A light led to approximately 6.5-log of bacterial reduction. Presence of antioxidant compounds mitigated the light-mediated antibacterial activity of gallic acid, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, and propyl gallate. Similarly, the light-mediated antibacterial activity of these compounds was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced against metabolic-inhibited bacterial cells (sodium azide pretreatment). On the other hand, the antibacterial synergism between ferulic acid and UV-A light was not affected by the presence of antioxidants or the metabolic state of the bacterial cells. Due to the increasing concerns of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) pathogens, the study also investigated the proposed synergistic treatment on AMR Salmonella. Combinations of 1 mM of ferulic acid or 1 mM of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid with UV-A light radiation was able to inactivate more than 6-log of a multi-drug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strain.

Abstract
During the development of antibacterial and antiviral materials for personal protective equipment (PPE), daylight active functional polymeric materials containing vitamin K compounds (VKs) and impacts of polymer structures to the functions were investigated. As examples, hydrophobic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (PVA-co-PE) polymers were directly blended with three VK compounds and electrospun into VK-containing nanofibrous membranes (VNFMs). The prepared VNFMs exhibited robust photoactivity in generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) under both daylight (D65, 300-800 nm) and ultraviolet A (UVA, 365 nm) irradiation, resulting in high antimicrobial and antiviral efficiency (>99.9%) within a short exposure time (<90 min). Interestingly, the PVA-co-PE/VK3 VNFM showed higher ROS production rates and better biocidal functions than those of the PAN/VK3 VNFM under the same photoirradiation conditions, indicating that PVA-co-PE is a better matrix polymer material for these functions. Moreover, the prepared PVA-co-PE/VK3 VNFM maintains its powerful microbicidal function even after five times of repeated exposures to bacteria and viruses, showing the stability and reusability of the antimicrobial materials. The fabrication of photoinduced antimicrobial VNFMs may provide new insights into the development of non-toxic and reusable photoinduced antimicrobial materials that could be applied in personal protective equipment with improved biological protections.

Abstract
There is a need to develop food processing technologies with enhanced antimicrobial capacity against foodborne pathogens. While considering the challenges of adequate inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in different food matrices, the emerging technologies are also expected to be sustainable and have a minimum impact on food quality and nutrients. Synergistic combinations of food processing technologies and food-grade compounds have a great potential to address these needs. During these combined treatments, food processes directly or indirectly interact with added chemicals, intensifying the overall antimicrobial effect. This review provides an overview of the combinations of different thermal or nonthermal processes with a variety of food-grade compounds that show synergistic antimicrobial effect against pathogenic microorganisms in foods and model systems. Further, we summarize the underlying mechanisms for representative combined treatments that are responsible for the enhanced microbial inactivation. Finally, regulatory issues and challenges for further development and technical transfer of these new approaches at the industrial level are also discussed.

Abstract
The need for more effective antimicrobials is critical for the food industry to improve food safety and reduce spoilage of minimally processed foods. The present study was initiated to develop an efficient and novel antimicrobial approach which combines physical treatments (UV-A or mild heat) and generally recognized as safe lauroyl arginate ethyl (LAE) to inactivate surrogate strains, including Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua Synergistic inactivation of bacteria resulted in an ∼6-log reduction of target bacteria, while individual treatments resulted in <1.5-log inactivation under the same set of conditions. In addition, the synergistic mechanism between LAE and UV-A/mild heat was evaluated by supplementing with a variety of antioxidants for suppressing oxidative stress and measurement of cell membrane damage by nucleic acid release. These results demonstrate that the synergistic antimicrobial activity of LAE and mild physical stresses was suppressed by supplementation with antioxidants. The research also compared LAE with another membrane-targeting lipopeptide antimicrobial agent, polymyxin B, to understand the uniqueness of LAE-induced synergy. Briefly, differences in modes of action between LAE and polymyxin B were characterized by comparing the MIC, damage to liposomes, and oxidative stress generation. These differences in the mode of action between LAE and polymyxin B suggested that both compounds target cell membrane but significantly differ in mechanisms, including membrane disruption and oxidative stress generation. Overall, this study illustrates synergistic antimicrobial activity of LAE with light or mild heat and indicates a novel oxidative stress pathway that enhances the activity of LAE beyond membrane damage.IMPORTANCE This study highlights an effective antimicrobial processing approach using a novel combination of lauroyl arginate ethyl (LAE) and two different physical treatments, light (UV-A) and mild heat. Both combinations demonstrated synergistic inactivation against a model Gram-negative bacterium or a Gram-positive bacterium or both by a >5-log reduction. Further mechanistic study revealed that oxidative stress is responsible for synergistic inactivation between LAE and UV-A, while both membrane damage and oxidative stress are responsible for the synergistic combination between LAE and mild heat. The mode of action of LAE was further compared to that of polymyxin B and analyzed using artificial membrane model systems and the addition of antioxidants. The proposed combination of LAE and common physical treatments may improve food preservation, food safety, and current sanitation processes for the food industry and the inactivation of pathogenic strains in biomedical environments.

Abstract
Biochar(BC)-supported nanoscaled zinc oxide (nZO) was encapsulated either with (nZORc/BC) or with no (nZOR/BC) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet (UV)-visible-near infrared spectrophotometry revealed that nZO of 16, 10, and 20 nm with energy band gaps of 2.79, 3.68 and 2.62 eV were synthesized for nZOR/BC, nZORc/BC and nZO/BC, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm predicted saturated sorption of methylene blue (MB) was 17.01 g kg-1 for nZORc/BC, over 19 times greater than nZOR/BC and nZO/BC. Under UV irradiation, 10.9, 61.6, 83.1, and 41.6% of MB were degraded for nZORc/BC, nZO/BC, nZOR/BC and BC. The scavenging experiment revealed hydroxyl radical dominated CMC degradation. Exogenous CMC (2 g L-1) increased MB sorption from 10.6% to 73.1%, but decreased MB degradation from 80.7% to 41.1%, relative to nZOR/BC. Thus, CMC could increase MB sorption by electrostatic attraction and other possible mechanisms. The compromised MB degradation may be ascribed to reduced availability of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals to degrade MB, and increased band gap energy of ZnO.

Abstract
Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are a significant burden on global economies and public health. Most present personal protective equipment used to prevent EID transmission and infections is typically devoid of antimicrobial activity. We report on green bioprotective nanofibrous membranes (RNMs) with rechargeable antibacterial and antiviral activities that can effectively produce biocidal reactive oxygen species (ROS) solely driven by the daylight. The premise of the design is that the photoactive RNMs can store the biocidal activity under light irradiation and readily release ROS under dim light or dark conditions, making the biocidal function "always online." The resulting RNMs exhibit integrated properties of fast ROS production, ease of activity storing, long-term durability, robust breathability, interception of fine particles (>99%), and high bactericidal (>99.9999%) and virucidal (>99.999%) efficacy, which enabled to serve as a scalable biocidal layer for protective equipment by providing contact killing against pathogens either in aerosol or in liquid forms. The successful synthesis of these fascinating materials may provide new insights into the development of protection materials in a sustainable, self-recharging, and structurally adaptive form.

Abstract
The reduction of microbial load in food and water systems is critical for their safety and shelf life. Conventionally, physical processes such as heat or light are used for the rapid inactivation of microbes, while natural compounds such as lactic acid may be used as preservatives after the initial physical process. This study demonstrates the enhanced and rapid inactivation of bacteria based on a synergistic combination of sublethal levels of stresses induced by UV-A light and two food-grade organic acids. A reduction of 4.7 ± 0.5 log CFU/ml in Escherichia coli O157:H7 was observed using a synergistic combination of UV-A light, gallic acid (GA), and lactic acid (LA), while the individual treatments and the combination of individual organic acids with UV-A light resulted in a reduction of less than 1 log CFU/ml. Enhanced inactivation of bacteria on the surfaces of lettuce and spinach leaves was also observed based on the synergistic combination. Mechanistic investigations suggested that the treatment with a synergistic combination of GA plus LA plus UV-A (GA+LA+UV-A) resulted in significant increases in membrane permeability and intracellular thiol oxidation and affected the metabolic machinery of E. coli In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the synergistic combination of GA+LA+UV-A was effective only against metabolically active E. coli O157:H7. In summary, this study illustrates the potential of simultaneously using a combination of sublethal concentrations of natural antimicrobials and a low level of physical stress in the form of UV-A light to inactivate bacteria in water and food systems.IMPORTANCE There is a critical unmet need to improve the microbial safety of the food supply, while retaining optimal nutritional and sensory properties of food. Furthermore, there is a need to develop novel technologies that can reduce the impact of food processing operations on energy and water resources. Conventionally, physical processes such as heat and light are used for inactivating microbes in food products, but these processes often significantly reduce the sensory and nutritional properties of food and are highly energy intensive. This study demonstrates that the combination of two natural food-grade antimicrobial agents with a sublethal level of physical stress in the form of UV-A light can greatly increase microbial load inactivation. In addition, this report elucidates the potential mechanisms for this synergistic interaction among physical and chemical stresses. Overall, these results provide a novel approach to develop antimicrobial solutions for food and water systems.

Abstract
Our aim is to present a comprehensive review of the development of modern antibacterial metallic materials as touch surfaces in healthcare settings. Initially we compare Japanese, European and US standards for the assessment of antimicrobial activity. The variations in methodologies defined in these standards are highlighted. Our review will also cover the most relevant factors that define the antimicrobial performance of metals, namely, the effect of humidity, material geometry, chemistry, physical properties and oxidation of the material. The state of the art in contact-killing materials will be described. Finally, the effect of cleaning products, including disinfectants, on the antimicrobial performance, either by direct contact or by altering the touch surface chemistry on which the microbes attach, will be discussed. We offer our outlook, identifying research areas that require further development and an overview of potential future directions of this exciting field.
