The relationship between patients’ perception of nurse caring behaviors and tuberculosis stigma among patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis in Swaziland

Experiences with Tuberculosis Management among Community-Based Care Providers in Indonesia: A Qualitative Study

To explore experiences with TB management among community-based care providers. Descriptive qualitative study. A total of 25 care providers were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis. Six themes emerged from this study: "various dissemination channels," "compassionate religious volunteerism," "shortage of resources," "keeping TB cases hidden," "patient impediments to care," and "perceived economic burdens of patients." The findings can provide an understanding that the management of tuberculosis in the community requires collaboration between various institutions as well as patients. Building a sustainable TB system would be beneficial. A TB care model can be established between government and other institutions.

Adaptation and Validation of the Tuberculosis Related Stigma Scale in Portuguese

Objective: To adapt and validate the Tuberculosis Related Stigma Scale (TRSS) in European Portuguese. Materials and method: A methodological study in a sample of 204 individuals being treated for pulmonary tuberculosis in Portuguese Pulmonary Diagnostic Centers, with at least one month of treatment or in follow-up. The evaluation process of linguistic and conceptual equivalence involved translation, the consensus among judges, back-translation, semantic validation, and pre-testing of the TRSS. The scale’s psychometric properties were assessed by verifying the reliability and validity of the results and calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and the exploratory factor analysis of principal components, with Varimax rotation of the scale items. Results: The Portuguese version of the TRSS has a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.94 and has 23 items distributed in two dimensions: “Community’s perspectives on tuberculosis” (11 items) and “Person’s perspectives on tuberculosis” (12 items). Its psychometric characteristics ensure adequate reliability and validity for the Portuguese population. Conclusions: The TRSS is a valid and reliable instrument to assess stigma in people with pulmonary tuberculosis and, to date, the only scale validated in this domain for the Portuguese population, which allows nurses to make an integrated intervention.

Correlation between nurse-patient interaction and readiness to care for post-treated heart failure patients in the intensive care room Malang, Indonesia

BACKGROUND

The number of people with heart failure significantly increases every year. One of the problems associated with the increase in the number of rehospitalization patients is the inadequate knowledge of self-care. Therefore, this study aims to determine the nurse-patient interaction capable of providing adequate care to post-treated heart failure patients in intensive care rooms.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study with the consecutive sampling method used to obtain data from 100 post-treatment heart failure patients in intensive care rooms. PPIQ (Patient Professional Interaction Questionnaire) was used to measure nurse-patient interactions, while Self-care readiness was determined using the SCHFI (Self-Care Heart Failure Instrument).

RESULT

The result showed that there is a significant correlation between nurse-patient interactions and their readiness to care for post-treatedeart failure patients in intensive care . Furthermore, both variables have a moderate and positive correlation strength and with a correlation coefficient value of 0.557.

CONCLUSIONS

The yearly increase in the number of re-hospitalized patients in hospitals can be reduced with an increase in nurse-patient interaction. This enables patients to have the ability to take proper care of themselves after leaving the hospital.

Predictors and priority of caring behaviours in intensive care units

BACKGROUND

There is an increasing number of studies addressing nurses' perception of caring behaviours; however, on the issue of quality of care, it is important to understand why nurses focus more on certain elements of caring than others, and this needs to investigate influencing factors on, priorities, and predictors of caring behaviours.

AIMS

The main goal of this study was to determine the predictors and priorities of nurses' caring behaviours in intensive care units to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional survey of nurses working in adult and pediatric ICUs in Iran. The participants were 470 ICU nurses from eight hospitals in Iran. Data were collected over 6 months in 2018 using the Persian version of "Caring Assessment Report Evaluation Q-Care"; "Determinants of Nurse Caring Behaviors"; and a demographic data form.

RESULTS

By broad descriptive and analytical analysis, thirteen items were recognized as predictors of caring behaviours. The most important individual predictors reported as "interest in the nursing profession," "moral obligation," and "job experience," respectively. The most important perceived nursing behaviours were, respectively, subscales of "accessible," "monitors/follow-through" and "explains/facilitates."

CONCLUSION

The results provide insight into new and context-specific predictors of nurses' caring behaviours. These findings suggest that nursing managers, besides selecting skilful staff for ICUs, may consider employing those of higher "interest in the nursing profession"; "moral obligation"; and "job experience." They, also, need to be aware that organizational culture, climate, and values have a great impact on the caring behaviours of nurses. This could help them to handle the complex issue of improving the quality of care more efficiently.
