Abstract
The hydrogel materials are getting attention from the research due to their multidimensional usage in various fields. Chitosan is one of the most important hydrogels used in this regard. In this paper multifunctional binary graft copolymeric matrices of chitosan with monomer AA and various comonomers AAm and AN were prepared by performing free radical graft copolymerization in the presence of an initiator KPS. The binary grafting can be done at five different molar concentrations of binary comonomers at already optimized concentration of AA, KPS and other reaction conditions such as time, temperature, solvent amount, etc. Various optimum reaction conditions were investigated and presented in this work; the backbone as well as binary grafts Ch-graft-poly (AA-cop-AAm) and Ch-graft-poly (AA-cop-AN) were characterized via various physio-chemical techniques of analysis such as SEM analysis, Xray diffraction (XRD), TGA/DTA and FTIR. In the batch experiments, the binary grafts were investigated for the percent swelling with respect to pH (pH of 2.2, 7.0, 7.4 and 9.4) and time (contact time 1 to 24 h). Uploading and controllable in vitro release of the drug DS (anti-inflammatory) was examined with reverence to gastrointestinal pH and time. The binary grafts showed significantly better-controlled drug diffusion than the unmodified backbone. The kinetic study revealed that the diffusion of the drug occurred by the non-Fickian way. In the case of separation technologies, experiments (batch tests) were executed for the toxic bivalent metal ions Fe (II) and Pb (II) sorption from the aqueous media with respect to the parameters such as interaction period, concentration of fed metal ions in solution, pH and temperature. The binary grafted matrices showed superior results compared to chitosan. The kinetics study revealed that the matrices show pseudo-second order adsorption. The graft copolymer Ch-graft-poly (AA-cop-AAm) provided superior results in sustainable drug release as well as metal ion uptake. The study explored the potential of chitosan-based materials in the industry as well in the biomedical field. The results proved these to be excellent materials with a lot of potential as adsorbents.

Comparative Drug Release Investigations for Diclofenac Sodium Drug (DS) by Chitosan-Based Grafted and Crosslinked Copolymers. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15072404. Abstract
The hydrogels responding to pH synthesized by graft copolymerization only and then concurrent grafting and crosslinking of monomer N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAM) and binary comonomers acrylamide, acrylic acid and acrylonitrile (AAm, AA and AN) onto chitosan support were explored for the percent upload and release study for anti-inflammatory diclofenac sodium drug (DS), w.r.t. time and pH. Diclofenac sodium DS was seized in polymeric matrices by the equilibration process. The crosslinked-graft copolymers showed the highest percent uptake than graft copolymers (without crosslinker) and chitosan itself. The sustainable release of the loaded drug was studied with respect to time at pH 2.2, 7.0, 7.4 and 9.4. Among graft copolymers (without crosslinking), Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AA) and Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AN) exhibited worthy results for sustainable drug deliverance, whereas Crosslink-Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AA) and Crosslink-Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AAm) presented the best results for controlled/sustained release of diclofenac sodium DS with 93.86 % and 96.30 % percent release, respectively, in 6 h contact time. Therefore, the grafted and the crosslinked graft copolymers of the chitosan showed excellent delivery devices for the DS with sustainable/prolonged release in response to pH. Drug release kinetics was studied using Fick’s law. The kinetic study revealed that polymeric matrices showed the value of n as n > 1.0, hence drug release took place by non-Fickian diffusion. Hence, the present novel findings showed the multidirectional drug release rate. The morphological changes due to interwoven network structure of the crosslinked are evident by the Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

Abstract
Several drugs are chemically unstable in the gastric environment and have low bioavailability restricted by intestinal absorption, which motivates the development of alternative routes for drug release, such as transdermal drug carriers for drug delivery to specific areas of the skin. Herein, novel polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) consisting of carboxymethylagarose (CMA) and chitosan (CS) were prepared. pH-responsive CMA/CS hydrogels were obtained by mixing CMA and CS at various weight ratios. Swelling ratio was modulated by varying the CMA and CS weight ratio, and the highest swelling values were achieved for 2:1 wt% hydrogels at 25 °C and pH 6.0. PEC films were characterized by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and SEM. Results indicated that CMA and CS were successfully crosslinked by ionic complexation. As a model drug, diclofenac sodium (DS) was loaded in CMA/CS PECs. Association efficiency and loading capacity were ca. 69% and 79%, respectively, exhibiting 67% cumulative release after 72 h at 37 °C and pH 6.0 through Fickian diffusion mechanism. Viability assay of immortalized human keratinocyte (HaCat) cells showed ca. 100% survival in the presence of hydrogels and DS. Therefore, this work suggests that CMA/CS PECs can be applied as pH-responsive carriers for dermal drug delivery.

Abstract
In this study, we carried out the synthesis of a thermo- and pH-sensitive binary graft, based on N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) and pH sensitive acrylic acid (AAc) monomers, onto chitosan gels (net-CS) by ionizing radiation. Pre-oxidative irradiation and direct methods were examined, and materials obtained were characterized by FTIR-ATR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling tests (equilibrium swelling time, critical pH, and temperature). The best synthesis radiation method was the direct method, which resulted in the maximum grafting percentages (~40%) at low doses (10–12 kGy). The main goal of this study was the comparison of the swelling behavior and physicochemical properties of net-CS with those of the binary system (net-CS)-g-NVCL/AAc with the optimum grafting percentage (~30%). This produced a material that showed an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 33.5 °C and a critical pH value of 3.8, indicating the system is more hydrophilic at higher temperatures and low pH values. Load and release studies were carried out using diclofenac. The grafted system (32%) was able to load 19.3 mg g−1 of diclofenac and release about 95% within 200 min, in comparison to net-CS, which only released 80% during the same period. When the grafted system was protonated before diclofenac loading, it loaded 27.6 mg g−1. However, the drug was strongly retained in the material by electrostatic interactions and only released about 20%.

Abstract
The objective of this paper was to investigate the new formulations based on salicyl-imine-chitosan hydrogels as potential controlled drug release systems. They were prepared by in situ hydrogelation of chitosan with salicylaldehyde in the presence of diclofenac sodium salt (DCF) as model drug. FTIR, X-ray Spectroscopy, POM and SEM techniques were used to confirm the structural, supramolecular and morphological particularities of the formulations. Swelling test, in vitro enzymatic biodegradation and release profile were investigated in similar conditions mimicking the in vivo environment, and the release mechanism was assessed by fitting into five mathematical models. It was established that the formulations have the capacity to release DCF in a sustained manner for 10 days rate, the drug release rate being correlated to the crosslinking density and hydrogelation speed. The biodegradation occurred in three main stages, reaching a mass loss of 48% after 21 days. In order to be used in the biomedical field, the in vivo biocompatibility of the formulations was investigated on experimental rats. After 7 days of subcutaneous implantation, no influence on the hematologic profile, liver, kidney or immune defence capacity were observed, suggesting these formulations as valuable materials for biomedical devices.

Abstract
Smart hydrogels with dual network were presented since a new allylated chitosan was conceived. As a double network hydrogel, its first network consisted of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) worked as the gel matrix, and its second network with Schiff base bond enabled itself function as a molecular switch through the formation and break of the bond. When only the intestinal fluid was used, the second network could provide efficient protection for the loaded drug, and the drug release mechanism conformed to the non-Fickian type diffusion. While pre-treated with simulated gastric fluid, the switch would be opened and the mechanism was the Fickian type, which increased the cumulative percentage of drug release by about 25% and the release time by about 300 min. Besides, the hydrogel was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR and SEM. The effects of allylated chitosan, pH and crosslinker on the swelling ratio and morphology of hydrogel were also studied.

Abstract
A novel supermacroporous poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate) (p(HPMA)) cryogel was synthesized by cryogelation method at -16 °C. In this synthesis process, HPMA was used as a monomer, and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAAm) was used as cross-linker; the reaction was carried out in the presence of redox initiator pair N,N,N',N'-tetramethylene diamine (TEMED) and ammonium persulfate (APS). The effect of monomer concentration, cross-linker content, cooling rate, and dioxane co-solvent were determined with respect to the pore structure, mechanical behavior, swelling degree, and porosity of cryogel. The ESEM images indicate that the pore wall structure of cryogels was rough; moreover, small holes were present in the pore walls of cryogels. The result of compression test indicates that cryogels can be compressed by at least 80% without any breakdown. The result of swelling kinetics indicates that cryogels attain swelling equilibrium in 10 s. Furthermore, p(HPMA)-Cu2+ cryogel was prepared by loading Cu2+ ions on functionalized poly(hydroxypropyl methacrylate)-iminodiacetic acid (p(HPMA)-IDA) cryogel. We investigated the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on cryogels. The results indicate that compared to Freundlich isotherm, Langmuir isotherm could more suitably describe the adsorption process of BSA on cryogels. Meanwhile, the adsorption capacity of p(HPMA)-Cu2+ cryogel was significantly greater than that of p(HPMA) cryogel. The maximum adsorption capacity of BSA on p(HPMA)-Cu2+ cryogel, which was treated with 1 M Cu2+ ions, was as high as 196.87 mg/g cryogel (equivalent to 20.48 mg/mL cryogel) at 25 °C and pH = 7.8; therefore, the maximum adsorption capacity of BSA on p(HPMA)-Cu2+ cryogel was 4.35 times higher than that of p(HPMA) cryogel. Thus, the adsorption capacity of cryogels was strongly influenced by Cu2+ concentration, moreover, temperature changes clearly affected the adsorption capacity of p(HPMA)-Cu2+cryogel. The adsorption capacity at 25 °C was twice as that at 15 °C. By calculating Gibbs free energy change (∆G) of adsorption, we found that the adsorption process was spontaneous; moreover, adsorption process occurred better at higher temperature.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Graft copolymerization is one of the most promising technique uses to modify the properties of naturally available polymers with a minimum loss in their native characteristics. METHODS AND MATERIALS Graft copolymerization is a very significant technique to add hybrid properties in backbone of polymers. The grafting generally initiated through the formation of free radical centers on the polymer backbone as well as monomer. RESULTS Grafted polysaccharides have various applications in different important scientific areas such as drug delivery, pharmaceutical field, plastic industry, waste water treatment, tannery effluent treatment, textile industry, agriculture area, etc. all of this fascinated us to summarize the major research articles over the last two decades outlining different methods of grafting, surface modification, graft copolymerization of synthetic and natural polymers. CONCLUSION Various redox initiator systems viz. Ceric ammonium nitrate, per sulfate, Irradiation, FAS-H2O2etc. is also explored for grafting of vinyl through conventional and non-conventional techniques.

Abstract
Low-cost and environment-friendly polymeric adsorbents for sorption of heavy metal ions were synthesized by simultaneous graft copolymerization and cross-linking of acrylic acid alone and with comonomers glycidyl methacrylate, acrylamide and acrylonitrile onto chitosan using free radical initiator and cross-linker in aqueous medium. Structural aspects of cross-linked graft copolymers have been characterized by FTIR, SEM, TGA/DTA, XRD and swelling behavior at pH 2.2, 7.0 and 9.4. An attempt has been made to study sorption of Cr(VI), Cu(II) and Fe(II) ions on cross-linked graft copolymers by equilibration method and to establish a relationship between structural aspects of graft copolymers and metal ion uptake efficiency and selectivity. Solutions of individual ions were used for non-competitive sorption onto synthesized bio-adsorbents as a function of change in contact time, temperature, pH and metal ion concentration in feed. Competitive sorption investigation was performed from an aqueous solution of ternary metal ions by batch equilibration at 25°C and at 7.0pH. Cross-linked graft copolymers showed better results than unmodified chitosan and showed preferential sorption of Fe(II) ions than Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions.
