Antibacterial carboxymethyl cellulose/Ag nanocomposite hydrogels cross-linked with layered double hydroxides

Design and synthesis of drug hydrogels containing carboxymethylcellulose with honeycomb structure and pH-sensitivity as drug delivery systems for adriamycin, metformin, and naproxen

The aim of this research is to prepare and identify functionalized carboxymethylcellulose/mesoporous silica nanohydrogels (CMC/NH2-MCM-41) for obtaining a pH-sensitive system for the controlled release of drugs. The beads of CMC/NH2-MCM-41 nanocomposites were prepared by dispersing NH2-MCM-41 in a CMC polymer matrix and crosslinking with ferric ions (Fe3+). The SEM analysis of samples revealed enhancement in surface porosity of the functionalized nanohydrogel beads compared to the conventional beads. Swelling of the prepared functionalized nanohydrogels was evaluated at various pH values including pH = 7.35-7.45 (simulated body fluid or healthy cells), pH = 6 (simulated intestinal fluid), and pH = 1.5-3.5 (simulated gastric fluid). The swelling of CMC/MCM-41 and CMC/NH2-MCM-41 nanohydrogels at the pH values of simulated body fluid and simulated intestinal fluid is much higher than that of simulated gastric fluid, indicating successful synthesis of pH-sensitive nanohydrogels for drug delivery. The drug loading results showed that drug release in the CMC/NH2-MCM-41 system is much slower than that in the CMC/MCM-41 system. The results of the survival studies for the manufactured systems showed a very good biocompatibility of the designed drug delivery systems for biological applications. By coating the surface of functionalized mesopores with CMC hydrogel, we were able to develop a pH-sensitive intelligent drug delivery system.

Zn/Al layered double hydroxide and carboxymethyl cellulose composite beads as support for the catalytic gold nanoparticles and their applications in the reduction of nitroarenes

Until now, many efficient catalysts have been reported that are used for the reduction of nitroarenes. However, a catalyst reusability is a challenge that is often faced in practical environment. In this report, we designed a hydrogel composite (CMC-LDH), which act as support and making it possible to address this challenge. In this research work, zinc/aluminum based layered double hydroxides (Zn/Al LDH) have been assembled with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to prepare CMC/LDH hydrogel beads. The CMC/LDH hydrogel beads were prepared by the ionotropic gelation method. For CMC/LDH/Au preparation, the already prepared CMC/LDH beads were kept in gold ion (Au3+) solution, and their subsequent reduction with sodium borohydride (NaBH4). For the characterization of the prepared samples different instrumental techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were adopted. For the catalytic evaluation of CMC/LDH/Au, it was utilized as a catalyst in 4-NP and 4-NA reduction reactions. The continuity of the reaction was monitored by a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Rate constant (kapp) of 0.48474 min-1 and 0.7486 min-1 were obtained for 4-NP and 4-NA reduction, respectively. The hydrogel beads were recycled and reused for up to five successive cycles without significantly changing their catalytic efficiency.

Zinc/aluminum-layered double hydroxide-gallic acid doped carboxymethyl cellulose nanocomposite films for wound healing

Effective loading and delivering the wound healing-based materials to the wound site and area with an optimum concentration and limited cytotoxicity are essential for a complete and fast healing process. Here, we have designed Zn/Al-LDH nanoparticles-loaded CMC films for encapsulation and delivery of gallic acid (GA) in order to develop an effective and efficient wound-healing scaffold. The physicochemical properties of the prepared Zn/Al-LDH nanohybrids were thoroughly characterized by several characterization techniques, such as FESEM, Hi-TEM, FTIR, and XRD techniques. The thermal properties of the scaffolds were evaluated by DSC and TGA analysis. The release profiles of GA from fabricated films were studied over 8 h by UV-vis spectroscopy. In vitro drug release studies in PBS solutions with pH 7.4 showed a mono-phasic profile in which the liberation of the drug mainly occurred by scaffold erosion and increased by increasing the experiment period. The in vitro antibacterial activity of Zn/Al-LDH-GA-loaded CMC films was assessed by disk diffusion and cell viability contact tests. The results showed the desired antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. Incorporating GA within CMC and CMC-Zn/Al-LDH films rereleased good cytocompatibility at the studied incubation time and different concentrations toward human normal HFF cell line than the free drug. The results of the present study indicated that the Zn/Al-LDH and Zn/Al-LDH-GA-loaded CMC have promising wound healing features to further develop a better future for clinical remedy of the different non-healing and hard-to-heal wounds.

Synthesizing pectin-crosslinked gum ghatti hydrogel for efficient adsorptive removal of malachite green

Pectin-crosslinked gum ghatti hydrogel (PGH) has been synthesized utilizing pectin and gum ghatti through an uncomplicated and inexpensive copolymerization method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-elemental mapping), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization techniques have been employed to determine various structural, chemical and compositional characteristics of fabricated PGH. Three different weight ratios (1:1, 2:1, or 1:2 for pectin and gum ghatti, respectively) were employed to synthesize three distinct types of PGH. Swelling studies has been done to determine the best ratios for PGH fabrication. PGH has been assessed as an adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. The effects of PGH dosage (100-400 mg/L), dye concentration (10-160 mg/L), pH (2-9 pH), adsorption time (0-480 min), and temperature (25-55 °C) has been examined through batch solutions. According to Langmuir isotherm analysis, the maximum adsorption capacity is 658.1 mg/g. By using pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm, the adsorption process could be well explained. After five consecutive cycles, PGH had an adsorption percentage of 86.917 % for the malachite green dye. It is safe for the environment and may be used to remove malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solutions.

Thermal, morphology and bacterial analysis of pH-responsive sodium carboxyl methylcellulose/ fumaric acid/ acrylamide nanocomposite hydrogels: Synthesis and characterization

In this present investigation, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose grafted with Fumaric acid/Acrylamide (CMC/FA/AAm=CFA) hydrogel and their silver nanocomposite hydrogels (CFA-Ag x, x = 5, 10 and 20) were developed by simple, cost effective and ecofriendly greener method. Mint leaf extract was used as an efficient natural reducing agent due to presence of active and antioxidant potential of polyphenol and flavonoid components. Swelling equilibrium of CFA hydrogel showed Seq% 3000 both in pH medium and distilled water. CFA (90:10) hydrogel has been produced greater than Seq% 6000. The synthesized CFA (90:10)-Ag-5, CFA (90:10)-Ag-10 and CFA (90:10)-Ag-20 nanocomposite hydrogels have been observed lower Seq% 2000-3000 than the CFA hydrogel. The homogeneous distribution of AgNPs throughout the CFA hydrogel and nanocomposites has been explored by SEM analysis. The interaction of network heteroatoms with AgNPs has been strongly revealed by the FTIR spectra and XRD analysis. The thermal stability of CFA (90:10)-Ag-5, 10, and 20 nanocomposite hydrogels have showed greater stability than CFA hydrogel which is confirmed by TGA/DSC thermogram analysis. The TEM analysis was used to explore a uniform distribution of spherical AgNPs (10 nm-50 nm) embedded on the CFA composite hydrogel. The CFA (90:10)-Ag-20 nanocomposite hydrogel has showed good antibacterial activity beside E. coli (Gram positive) and S. aureus (Gram negative) pathogens. Based on the antibacterial activity and swelling properties of CFA-Ag nanocomposite hydrogels have the ability to accelerate the antibacterial activity and are potential candidates for medical and environmental applications.

Poultices as biofilms of titanium dioxide nanoparticles/carboxymethyl cellulose/Phytagel for cleaning of infected cotton paper by Aspergillus sydowii and Nevskia terrae

In this study, TiO2 nanoparticle (TiO2NP)-coated film was produced to protect manuscripts against microorganisms using ecofriendly benign materials. As a result, a simple method was created that uses poultice biofilm made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Phytagel plant cell (PGP) loaded with TiO2NPs to preserve manuscripts against microbes in an environmentally responsible way. Three volumes (1, 2, 4 mL) of TiO2NPs were put into a biofilm combination to produce the poultices known as CMC/PGP/TiO2-1, CMC/PGP/TiO2-2, and CMC/PGP/TiO2-3. The synthesized TiO2NPs were nearly spherical in shape, small in size (98 nm), and stable (zeta potential value - 33 mV). The results showed that the unique deposition of TiO2NPs on the biofilm surface gave the produced films loaded with TiO2NPs a rough structure. The highest values of mechanical characteristics were determined to be in CMC/PGP/TiO2-1 with values of 25.4 g, 6.6 MPa, and 11.4%, for tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear strength, respectively. Based on molecular identification, the fungus Aspergillus sydowii and the bacterium Nevskia terrae, with accession numbers MG991624 and AB806800, respectively, were isolated and identified from an antiquated manuscript formed from cellulosic fibers. Before the experiments, the produced cotton paper samples were aged, and then, one group was infected for 6 months by A. sydowii and the second group with N. terrae. Following the preparation of a CMC/PGP biofilm loaded with various volumes of TiO2NPs, poultices were applied to infected cotton paper in order to clean it. The infected cotton paper was placed inside the sandwich-like poultices that were created. The poultice CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 demonstrated potential for preventing the growth of A. sydowii and N. terrae-infected cotton paper, when the fibers were saved, cleaned, and coated with CMC/PGP/TiO2-2 after absorbing the fungus and the bacterium and exhibiting exceptional antimicrobial activities. Finally, the novel biofilms have demonstrated their capacity to lessen microbial contamination of cotton paper. In order to generalize the usage of these poultices, it is also advised that they be produced on a large scale and tested on a variety of organic materials in the future.

A Homochiral Diphenylalanine Analog Based Mechanoresponsive Hydrogel: An Insight Towards Its Wound Healing Efficacy

Deciphering the most promising strategy for the evolution of potential wound-healing therapeutics is one of the greatest challenging affairs to date. The development of peptide-based smart scaffolds with innate antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties is an appealing way out. Aligned to the goal a set of Hydrogelators I-IV were developed utilizing the concept of chiral orchestration in diphenylalanine fragment, such that the most potent construct with all the bench marks namely mechanoresponsiveness, biocompatibility, consistent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, could be fished out from the design. Interestingly, our in vitro Antifungal and Lipid peroxidation analysis identified the homochiral isomer Boc-δ-Ava-L-Phe-L-Phe-OH (Hydrogelator I), as an ideal candidate for the wound healing experiment, so we proceeded for the in vivo histopathological and antioxidant measurements in Wister rats. Indeed the wound images obtained from the different sets of animals on the 14th day of treatment demonstrated that with increased recovery time, hydrogelator I displayed a significant reduction in the lesion diameter compared to the marketed drug, and negative control. Even the histopathological measurements using H & E staining demonstrated diminished tissue destruction, neutrophil infiltration necrosis, and lymphatic proliferation in the hydrogelators, in comparison to others, backed by in vivo lipid peroxidation data. Overall our investigation certifies hydrogelator I as an effective therapeutic for managing the wound healing complication.

Isolation and Extraction of Monomers from Insoluble Dietary Fiber

Insoluble dietary fiber is a macromolecular polysaccharide aggregate composed of pectin, glycoproteins, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. All agricultural by-products contain significant levels of insoluble dietary fiber. With the recognition of the increasing scarcity of non-renewable energy sources, the conversion of single components of dietary fiber into renewable energy sources and their use has become an ongoing concern. The isolation and extraction of single fractions from insoluble dietary fiber is one of the most important recent research directions. The continuous development of technologies for the separation and extraction of single components is aimed at expanding the use of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin for food, industrial, cosmetic, biomedical, and other applications. Here, to expand the use of single components to meet the new needs of future development, separation and extraction methods for single components are summarized, in addition to the prospects of new raw materials in the future.

Fabrication of antibacterial polydopamine-carboxymethyl cellulose-Ag nanoparticle hydrogel coating for urinary catheters

Urinary tract infections caused by catheter insertion are prevalent in hospital clinics, which can induce serious complications such as bacteriuria and sepsis, and even lead to patient death. The disposable catheters currently used in clinical practice suffer from poor biocompatibility and high infection rate. In this paper, we developed a polydopamine (PDA)-carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)-Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) coating with both good antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties to bacteria on the surfaces of a disposable medical latex catheter by a simple dipping method. The antibacterial efficiency of the coated catheters against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria was evaluated with both inhibition zone tests and fluorescence microscopy. Compared with the untreated catheter, the PDA-CMC-AgNPs coated catheters showed both good antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties to bacteria, which inhibited the adhesion of live bacteria and dead bacteria by 99.0% and 86.6%, respectively. This novel PDA-CMC-AgNPs composite hydrogel coating has great potential in applications in catheters and other biomedical devices to reduce infections.

Investigation of biological effects of chitosan magnetic nano-composites hydrogel

The growing concern about microorganism infections, especially hospital-acquired infections, has driven the demand for effective and safe agents in recent years. Herein, novel nanocomposites were prepared based on layered double hydroxides (LDH NPs), Fe₂O₃nanoparticles (Fe₂O₃NPs), and chitosan hydrogel beads in different concentrations. The characteristics and composition of the prepared materials were investigated by various techniques such as XRD, FESEM, and FTIR. The results indicate that the nanocomposites are synthesized successfully, and each component is present in hydrogel matrixes. Then, their biomedical properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity, were examined. Our findings demonstrate that the antimicrobial activity of nanocomposites significantly depends on the concentration of each component and their chemical groups. It shows itself in the result of the inhibitory zone of all bacteria or fungi samples. The obtained results indicate that the nanocomposite of Chitosan-hydrogel beads with 20% LDH and Fe₂O₃(CHB-LDH-Fe₂O₃%20) and Chitosan-hydrogel beads based on 20% LDH (CHB-LDH%20) showed excellent antibacterial and antifungal properties against all tested bacteria and fungi (P ≤ 0.01). In addition, the antioxidant effects of the synthesized materials (especially CHB-LDH Fe₂O₃%20 and CHB-LDH%20) were investigated, showing high antioxidant efficacy against DPPH free radicals (P ≤ 0.01). According to our findings, we can say that these materials are promising biomaterials for inhibiting some infectious bacteria and fungi.

Drug Delivery System Based on Carboxymethyl Cellulose Containing Metal-Organic Framework and Its Evaluation for Antibacterial Activity

A novel drug delivery system based on carboxymethyl cellulose containing copper oxide at melamine and zinc oxide at melamine framework (CMC-Cu-MEL and CMC-Zn-MEL) was prepared by the hydrothermal route. Synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, SEM, and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) images were applied to confirm the particle size and diffraction pattern of the prepared nanocomposites. Furthermore, the crystallinity of the synthesized CMC, CMC-Cu-MEL, and CMC-Zn-MEL materials was studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD). Estimating the transport exponent, which discloses the solvent diffusion and chain relaxation processes, and the Ritger–Peppas kinetic model theory were used to control the TC release mechanism from CMC-Cu-MEL and CMC-Zn-MEL. Additionally, the CMC-Cu-MEL and CMC-Zn-MEL containing TC had the highest activity index percents of 99 and 106% against S. aureus and 93 and 99% against E. coli, respectively. The tailored CMC-Cu-MEL and CMC-Zn-MEL for drug delivery systems are expected to be feasible and efficient.

D-mannose functionalized MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF nanocomposite as a new intelligent nanoplatform for MTX and DOX co-drug delivery

Commonly the directly administered chemotherapy drugs lack targeting in tumor treatment. Thus, trying to improve cancer treatment efficiency led us to design a new intelligent system for cancer treatment. Considering these, in the current work, at first, the 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH₂-BDC) intercalated layered double hydroxides (MgAl-(NH₂-BDC) LDH) were synthesized simply. Afterward, the in situ growth of the iron-based metal-organic frameworks in the presence of MgAl-(NH₂-BDC) LDH occurred (MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF). In the end, the reaction of MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF with D-mannose (D-Man) achieved the MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man ternary hybrid nanostructure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis confirmed the formation of the monodisperse Fe-MOF with nanosize in the presence of MgAl-LDH. Importantly, methotrexate (MTX) and doxorubicin (DOX) entrapment efficiency reached respectively about 28 wt% and 21% for MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man. The in vitro drug release experiments revealed a higher drug release at pH 5.0 in comparison with pH 7.4 which revealed its promising potential for anticancer drug delivery applications. Bioassay results revealed that the co-drug-loaded MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man has higher cytotoxicity on MDA-MB 231 cells. At last, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometric analysis confirmed the successful uptake of MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man into MDA-MB 231 cell lines, as well as its bioimaging potential. A survey in the published literature approved that this work is the first report on the evaluation of the MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man for targeted co-delivery of both MTX and DOX. Finally, results collectively demonstrate the importance of the biocompatible MgAl-LDH/Fe-MOF/D-Man as a hopeful candidate for biomedicinal applications from the targeted co-drug delivery and bioimaging potential viewpoints.

Direct contact, dissolution and generation of reactive oxygen species: How to optimize the antibacterial effects of layered double hydroxides

Infections by pathogenic bacteria have been threatening several fields as food industries, agriculture, textile industries and healthcare products. Layered double hydroxides materials (LDHs), also called anionic clays, could be utilized as efficient antibacterial materials due to their several interesting properties such as ease of synthesis, tunable chemical composition, biocompatibility and anion exchange capacity. Pristine LDHs as well as LDH-composites including antibacterial molecules and nanoparticles loaded-LDHs were proven to serve as efficient antibacterial agents against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. The achieved antibacterial effect was explained by the following mechanisms: (1) Direct contact between the materials and bacterial cells driven by electrostatic interactions between positively charged layers and negatively charged cell membranes, (2) Dissolution and gradual release over time of metallic ions or antibacterial molecules, (3) Generation of reactive oxygen species.

Multifunctional green synthesized Cu-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles: anti-cancer and antibacterial activities

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a potent anti-cancer agent and there have been attempts in developing nanostructures for its delivery to tumor cells. The nanoparticles promote cytotoxicity of DOX against tumor cells and in turn, they reduce adverse impacts on normal cells. The safety profile of nanostructures is an important topic and recently, the green synthesis of nanoparticles has obtained much attention for the preparation of biocompatible carriers. In the present study, we prepared layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanostructures for doxorubicin (DOX) delivery. The Cu–Al LDH nanoparticles were synthesized by combining Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O and Al(NO₃)₃·9H₂O, and then, autoclave at 110. The green modification of LDH nanoparticles with Plantago ovata (PO) was performed and finally, DOX was loaded onto nanostructures. The FTIR, XRD, and FESEM were employed for the characterization of LDH nanoparticles, confirming their proper synthesis. The drug release study revealed the pH-sensitive release of DOX (highest release at pH 5.5) and prolonged DOX release due to PO modification. Furthermore, MTT assay revealed improved biocompatibility of Cu–Al LDH nanostructures upon PO modification and showed controlled and low cytotoxicity towards a wide range of cell lines. The CLSM demonstrated cellular uptake of nanoparticles, both in the HEK-293 and MCF-7 cell lines; however, the results were showed promising cellular internalizations to the HEK-293 rather than MCF-7 cells. The in vivo experiment highlighted the normal histopathological structure of kidneys and no side effects of nanoparticles, further confirming their safety profile and potential as promising nano-scale delivery systems. Finally, antibacterial test revealed toxicity of PO-modified Cu–Al LDH nanoparticles against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria.

Functionalization and Antibacterial Applications of Cellulose-Based Composite Hydrogels

Pathogens, especially drug-resistant pathogens caused by the abuse of antibiotics, have become a major threat to human health and public health safety. The exploitation and application of new antibacterial agents is extremely urgent. As a natural biopolymer, cellulose has recently attracted much attention due to its excellent hydrophilicity, economy, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In particular, the preparation of cellulose-based hydrogels with excellent structure and properties from cellulose and its derivatives has received increasing attention thanks to the existence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups (such as hydroxyl, carboxy, and aldehyde groups) within cellulose and its derivatives. The cellulose-based hydrogels have broad application prospects in antibacterial-related biomedical fields. The latest advances of preparation and antibacterial application of cellulose-based hydrogels has been reviewed, with a focus on the antibacterial applications of composite hydrogels formed from cellulose and metal nanoparticles; metal oxide nanoparticles; antibiotics; polymers; and plant extracts. In addition, the antibacterial mechanism and antibacterial characteristics of different cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels were also summarized. Furthermore, the prospects and challenges of cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels in biomedical applications were also discussed.

Injectable and adhesive hydrogels for dealing with wounds

INTRODUCTION

The development of wound dressing materials that combine healing properties, ability to self-repair the material damages, skin-friendly adhesive nature, and competent mechanical properties have surpassing functional importance in healthcare. Due to their specificity, hydrogels have been recognized as a new gateway in biological materials to treat dysfunctional tissues. The design and creation of injectable hydrogel-based scaffolds have extensively progressed in recent years to improve their therapeutic efficacy and to pave the way for their easy minimally invasive administration. Hence, injectable hydrogel biomaterials have been prepared to eventually translate into minimally invasive therapy and pose a lasting effect on regenerative medicine.

AREAS COVERED

This review highlights the recent development of adhesive and injectable hydrogels that have applications in wound healing and wound dressing. Such hydrogel materials are not only expected to improve therapeutic outcomes but also to facilitate the easy surgical process in both wound healing and dressing.

EXPERT OPINION

Wound healing seems to be an appealing approach for treating countless life-threatening disorders. With the average increase of life expectancy in human societies, an increase in demand for injectable skin replacements and drug delivery carriers for chronic wound healing is expected.

Layered double hydroxide-based nanocomposite scaffolds in tissue engineering applications

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), when incorporated into biomaterials, provide a tunable composition, controllable particle size, anion exchange capacity, pH-sensitive solubility, high-drug loading efficiency, efficient gene and drug delivery, controlled release and effective intracellular uptake, natural biodegradability in an acidic medium, and negligible toxicity. In this review, we study potential applications of LDH-based nanocomposite scaffolds for tissue engineering. We address how LDHs provide new solutions for nanostructure stability and enhance in vivo studies' success.

Functionalization of an Electroactive Self-Healing Polypyrrole-Grafted Gelatin-Based Hydrogel by Incorporating a Polydopamine@AgNP Nanocomposite

Hydrogels are considered a promising wound dressing owing to their ability to absorb wound exudates and their moist network structure for skin regeneration. It is of great significance to give added multiple functions to hydrogels for wound healing. In this paper, we present a gelatin-based hydrogel with self-healing ability, conductivity, and antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Dopamine was added into an alkaline solution to polymerize into polydopamine (PDA), which was used to reduce AgNO₃ into Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) to gain a PDA@AgNP composite. Polypyrrole-grafted gelatin (PPyGel) was dissolved in a PDA@AgNP solution and ferric ions were used as a cross-linking agent to form PDA@AgNPs-PPyGel-Fe hydrogels. The as-prepared hydrogels are soft and ductile and exhibit porous structures with pore sizes from 20 to 50 μm. The hydrogels have high water absorption ability, indicating the potential to absorb wound exudates. PPy and Fe³⁺ endow the hydrogels with slightly higher conductivity than that of skin tissue, indicating the ability to effectively transmit bioelectric signals for skin regeneration. The ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding in hydrogels make them possess self-healing ability, and the self-healing process can be completed in 30 min. PDA confers hydrogels with effective antioxidant activities, while AgNPs endow hydrogels with good antibacterial activities. Moreover, the hydrogels possess good blood compatibility and cytocompatibility. In sum, the developed hydrogel has potential applications as wound dressings.

Recent innovations in functionalized layered double hydroxides: Fabrication, characterization, and industrial applications

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) are a group of hydrotalcite-like nano-sized materials with cationic layers and exchangeable interlayer anions. The wide range of divalent and trivalent cationic metals and anionic compounds are employed in the synthesis of LDH materials, which have improved their importance among the researchers. Because of their high anion exchange property, memory effect, tunable behavior, bio-friendly, simple preparation, and their affordability, these nano-materials are essentially interested today. Modification of LDHs improves their behaviours to make them appropriate in industrial fields, including biological, adsorbent, mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical fields, etc. This review has critically discussed the structural features, main properties, and also clarified the most important methods of modification and intercalation of LDH nano-materials. Moreover, some novel reported researches related to the successful modification of LDH materials have been characterized and briefly the advantages, disadvantages, and applications are presented in the industrial fields.

Synthesis of nanocomposite hydrogel based carboxymethyl starch/polyvinyl alcohol/nanosilver for biomedical materials

Treatment of infections using wound dressing integrated with multiple functions such as antibacterial activity, non-toxicity, and good mechanical properties has attracted much attention. In this study, carboxymethyl starch/polyvinyl alcohol/citric acid (CMS/PVA/CA) hydrogels containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared. The CMS, PVA and CA were used as polymer matrix and bio-based reducing agents for green synthesis of AgNPs. Silver nitrate (AgNO₃) concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mM were used to obtain nanocomposite hydrogels containing different AgNPs concentrations (AgNPs-50, AgNPs-100 and AgNPs-150, respectively). The minimum inhibitory concentration against E. coli and S. aureus was observed in CMS/PVA/CA hydrogels containing AgNPs-50. Uniform dispersion of AgNPs-100 in the hydrogel provided the highest storage modulus at 56.4 kPa. AgNPs-loaded hydrogels showed low toxicity to human fibroblast cells indicating good biocompatibility. Incorporation of AgNPs demonstrated an enhancement in antibacterial properties and overall mechanical properties, which makes these nanocomposite hydrogels attractive as novel wound dressing materials.

A novel cellulose hydrogel coating with nanoscale Fe0 for Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction

A novel cellulose hydrogel coating nanoscale Fe⁰ (CH@nFe⁰) was synthesized and utilized to improve the dispersibility and oxidation resistance of nFe⁰. The composition and structure of CH@nFe⁰ were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after its reaction with Cr(VI). The performance of CH@nFe⁰ in the removal of Cr(VI) was evaluated through a comparative experiment between nFe⁰ and CH. The influence of the initial concentration of Cr(VI), temperature, dosage, and the initial pH of the solution were also evaluated in this reaction system. The results showed that CH@nFe⁰ allowed a higher Cr(VI) removal rate compared to nFe⁰ and CH. This might have derived from an enhanced reduction and adsorption of Cr(VI) by CH. Meanwhile, the network structure of the cellulose hydrogel served as a mass-transfer channel between Cr(VI) and nFe⁰. In addition, the increase of the initial solution pH minimized the removal of Cr(VI). This mechanism revealed that CH coating resulted in an enhancement of the adsorption capability and reducibility of CH@nFe⁰ with respect to Cr(VI). The CH@nFe⁰ composite is characterized by an advantageous mesoporous network structure and functional groups of amide and carboxylic acid, which provide additional active sites and promote mass transfer. This new three-dimensional (3-D) cellulose hydrogel coating containing nFe⁰ can be effectively used for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from aquatic environments.

Lignin to Materials: A Focused Review on Recent Novel Lignin Applications

In recent decades, advancements in lignin application include the synthesis of polymers, dyes, adhesives and fertilizers. There has recently been a shift from perceiving lignin as a waste product to viewing lignin as a potential raw material for valuable products. More recently, considerable attention has been placed in sectors, like the medical, electrochemical, and polymer sectors, where lignin can be significantly valorized. Despite some technical challenges in lignin recovery and depolymerization, lignin is viewed as a promising material due to it being biocompatible, cheap, and abundant in nature. In the medical sector, lignins can be used as wound dressings, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery materials. They can also be used for electrochemical energy materials and 3D printing lignin–plastic composite materials. This review covers the recent research progress in lignin valorization, specifically focusing on medical, electrochemical, and 3D printing applications. The technoeconomic assessment of lignin application is also discussed.

An Injectable and Instant Self-Healing Medical Adhesive for Wound Sealing

Designing versatile functional medical adhesives with injectability, self-healing, and strong adhesion is of great significance to achieve desirable therapeutic effects for promoting wound sealing in healthcare. Herein, a self-healing injectable adhesive is fabricated by physical interaction of polyphenol compound tannic acid (TA) and eight-arm poly(ethylene glycol) end-capped with succinimide glutarate active ester (PEG-SG). The hydrogen bonding induced from the structural unit (-CH₂-CH₂-O-) of PEG and catechol hydroxyl (-OH) of TA, accompanied by ester exchange between N-hydroxysuccinimide (-NHS) and amino (-NH₂) of proteins, contributes to self-healing ability and rapid strong adhesion. Notably, the PEG/TA adhesive can repeatedly adhere to rigid porcine tissues, close the coronary artery under a large incision tension, and bear a heavy load of 2 kg. By exhibiting shear-thinning and anti-swelling properties, the PEG/TA adhesive can be easily applied through single-syringe extrusion onto various wounds. The single-channel toothpaste-like feature of the adhesive ensures its storage hermetically for portable usage. Moreover, in vivo operation and histological H&E staining results indicate that the PEG/TA adhesive greatly accelerates wound healing and tissue regeneration in a rat model. With the specialty of injectability, instant self-healing, and long-lasting strong adhesion to facilitate excellent therapeutic effects, the multifunctional PEG/TA adhesive may provide a new alternative for self-rescue and surgical situations.

Skin-Inspired Multifunctional Luminescent Hydrogel Containing Layered Rare-Earth Hydroxide with 3D Printability for Human Motion Sensing

The development of multifunctional hydrogels is gaining a lot of attention owing to its application in electronic skins, wearable electronics, and soft robotics. In this study, an effective and facile one-step preparation strategy is developed to fabricate a multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogel consisting of sodium alginate/sodium polyacrylate/layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH), where LRH plays multiple roles as a co-cross-linker and ionic carrier and is also the origin of fluorescence. The obtained LRH-based composite hydrogel exhibits excellent three-dimensional printing performance at room temperature. When exposed to different humidity conditions, the hydrogel exhibits humidity-dependent electromechanical properties. The multiple functions of the resultant hydrogel are easily realized by just relying on the addition of cationic LRH nanoplates. A skinlike motion sensor with transparency is fabricated based on the printed hydrogel and is used to monitor human motion. Owing to the fluorescence characteristics of lanthanide ions (Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺) from LRH, the hydrogel shows highly tunable multicolored photoluminescence by adjusting the LRH constituent. This study reveals that the multifunctional hydrogels have potential for applications in sensing.

Sprayed in-situ synthesis of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan loaded silver nanocomposite hydrogel for improved antibacterial effects

To overcome the practical limitations of hydrogel preparations, applications and strength-based problems, the present study utilizes the use of sprayers for preparing polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CH) hydrogels. The particle size, morphology, stability, release studies and antibacterial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) had been studied. The particle size of AgNPs was found to be in the range of 4.59-10 nm (75 °C) with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.84. The morphological images exhibited inter-connecting porous structure with pore size in submicron's (<1 µm). Major infra-red spectral peaks of PVA (2946.67 cm^-1; stretching of CH, 1142.72 cm^-1; CO stretching) and CH (3287.49 cm^-1; OH stretching, 2917.48 cm^-1; CH stretching) maintain their place in PVA/CH and PVA/CH/Ag hydrogels. In addition, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed peaks with 2θ values at 38.08°, 44.29° and 64.50° corresponding to the crystal planes of (1 1 1), (2 0 0) and (2 2 0), respectively, allocated to face-centered cubic crystalline structure of AgNPs. The drug release and antibacterial studies showed a maximum release of 91.83% from hydrogels and a concentration dependent zone of inhibition (ZOI) for >24 h, respectively. Thus, the newly developed sprayed hydrogels could turn out to be a suitable dressing material for wound healing applications.

Investigation of Thermal Behavior of Layered Double Hydroxides Intercalated with Carboxymethylcellulose Aiming Bio-Carbon Based Nanocomposites

Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a polymer derived from biomass, was intercalated into layered double hydroxides (LDH) composed by M2+/Al3+ (M2Al-CMC, M = Mg or Zn) and evaluated as precursors for the preparation of biocarbon-based nanocomposites by pyrolysis. M2Al-CMC hybrids were obtained by coprecipitation and characterized by X ray diffraction (XRD), vibrational spectroscopies, chemical analysis, and thermal analysis coupled to mass spectrometry. Following, pyrolyzed materials obtained between 500–1000 °C were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Above 600 °C, Raman spectra of all samples showed the presence of graphitic carbon, which plays a role in the degree of crystallinity of produced inorganic phases (for comparison purposes, M2Al-CO3 materials were investigated after calcination in the same experimental conditions). XRD patterns of Mg2Al-CMC pyrolyzed between 600–1000 °C showed poorly crystallized MgO and absence of spinel reflections, whereas for Zn2Al-CMC, it was observed well crystallized nanometric ZnO at 800 °C, and ZnAl2O4 and γ-Al2O3 phases at 1000 °C. Above 800 °C, the carbothermic reaction was noticed, transforming ZnO to zinc vapour. This study opens perspectives for nanocomposites preparation based on carbon and inorganic (mixed) oxides through precursors having organic-inorganic interactions at the nanoscale domain.

Eco-friendly porous carboxymethyl cellulose/dextran sulfate composite beads as reusable and efficient adsorbents of cationic dye methylene blue

Eco-friendly hydrogel composite beads based on crosslinked-carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and dextran sulfate (DS) embedded within network were prepared using ionotropic gelation in presence of sodium n-dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as pore-forming template. The milligels composites C/Dx were characterized by FTIR, SEM/EDX and TGA analyses. The composites exhibited porous structure and enhance in swelling properties with enriching DS as well as pH-sensitivity. The effect of DS on adsorption of composites for cationic dye methylene blue (MB) was investigated by changing influencing factors: pH, adsorbent dosage, time contact, dye concentration, and temperature. The results revealed that adsorption performances were remarkably improved by increasing DS content into beads. Kinetics and isotherm adsorption studies revealed pseudo second-order and Langmuir isotherm as befitting models. The maximum Langmuir equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_m) was found to increase from 82 mg g^-1 for C/D0 to 526 mg g^-1 for C/D1. Thermodynamic study revealed spontaneous and endothermic process nature. Furthermore, milligels displayed good reusability after five adsorption/desorption cycles and with an augment in their removal ability compared to starting ones, reaching 714 mg g^-1 for R-C/D1. In view of easy preparation and recovery, effectiveness adsorption and good regeneration, the composites could be applied as low-cost adsorbents in wastewater treatment.

In situ reduction of silver nanoparticles in the lignin based hydrogel for enhanced antibacterial application

Although antibiotics have been widely used, the problem of bacterial infection in the medical field still faces many challenges. In this study, we designed a new lignin based antimicrobial hydrogel for antimicrobial application. First, we grafted the amino group onto sodium lignin sulfonate through Mannich reaction to obtain lignin amine (LA), which can cross-link with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to form hydrogel. Then, silver nitrate solution is added to the formed gel pre-solution to be in situ reduced to silver nanoparticles. The enhanced effect of antibacterial properties due to lignin and silver nanoparticles endows the hydrogel enhanced antibacterial properties. The modification of sodium lignosulfonate and the crosslinking reaction between LA and PVA are confirmed by FTIR, while the content of nitrogen in LA is characterized by XPS. The SEM image of the hydrogel after lyophilization illustrates its internal porous network structure. The rheological test of hydrogel demonstrates its good strength and elasticity. The hydrogel exhibits good antibacterial properties in in vitro antibacterial experiments towards both S. aureus and E. coli, while toxicity tests using L929 cells demonstrated good biocompatibility of the hydrogel.
