Abstract
Production of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) to increase photocatalytic activity of commercial TiO2 (P25) and antibacterial activity of surgical sutures was studied. А new method of "green" synthesis of Ag-NPs from aqueous extract of grape skin (oxidation product), which is pre-processed by oxygen and ultrasound is reported. Also, a new method of electrochemical modification of surgical sutures was used. Characterization of Ag-NPs was carried out using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-visible spectroscopy. Zeta-potential of obtained colloidal solutions indicated the moderate stability of synthesized nanoparticles. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystallographic structure of the synthesized Ag-NPs. The component profile of grape skin extract has been analyzed using HPLC coupled to diode-array detection and tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS). In this study absorbable sutures were functionalized with biosynthesized AgNPs through an electrochemical and chemical deposition. Morphological analysis of Ag-NPs-coated surgical sutures was performed by SEM and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) in order to evaluate the presence and distribution of silver deposited on the sutures. The sutures demonstrated bacteriostatic and antifungal effects on Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Candida albicans wound pathogens. The study revealed that electrochemical deposition of Ag-NPs on nylon surgical sutures did not alter the mechanical properties of the sutures but conferred antibacterial properties. The modified TiO2 powders with biosynthesized Ag-NPs were characterized by XRD pattern, SEM, their photocatalytic properties, and their antibacterial activities were studied. The results of the antibacterial activity studies showed that TiO2 modified using green approach possessed higher antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria in comparison with TiO2 modified by the impregnation method.

Abstract
A highly efficient visible light active polyaniline (PANI)/Ag composites grafted reduced graphene oxide (rGO-Ag/PANI) was prepared for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of paracetamol. The structural, morphological, and light absorption properties of the as-synthesized rGO-Ag/PANI were characterized by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Paracetamol was taken as a model water pollutant to investigate the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the rGO-PANI/Ag nanocomposites under visible light radiation. The result shows the degradation of paracetamol to be 99.6% in the acidic medium (pH 5) and 75.76% in the basic medium (pH 9), respectively. The enhanced degradation efficiency is attributed to the synergetic effect of rGO, PANI, and Ag NPs in the nanocomposites. This synergy of the rGO-Ag/PANI is explained by the strong adsorption efficiency, charge separation, and light absorption in the visible region.

Abstract
In this article, we report a facile approach for the synthesis of an inexpensive catalyst of bimetallic Hg/Pd alloys comprising nanoparticles with various structures using a unique ultrasonic reaction that is conducted without the use of any reducing agent. The nanoparticles of Hg/Pd alloys (HgPd and Hg2Pd5) were achieved for the first time by sonicating an aqueous solution of Palladium (II) nitrate with metallic liquid mercury, as evidenced by XRD. EDS further confirmed the presence of Pd and Hg elements in the alloy. The surface morphology and structure of the nanoparticles have been systematically investigated by HRSEM, HRTEM and SAED pattern. In order to explore the catalytic activity of the as-synthesized nanoalloys, the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and a few other nitrophenol derivatives were investigated. Excellent catalytic activity was obtained for Hg/Pd (1:1) alloy, and the rate constant for the reduction of 4-NP with Hg/Pd at room temperature was found to be 58.4 × 10-3 s-1, which is possibly the highest ever reported. The catalyst exhibited superior stability and reusability when compared with those reported in the literature for other catalysts based on noble metals.

Abstract
Herein, we have reported a facile and green synthesis approach of Ag NP decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) through an in situ self-assembly method in the presence of l-methionine (l-Met) as reducing and stabilizing agent. The electronic properties, crystal structure, and morphology of the as-synthesized RGO–Ag nanocomposite were investigated by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. UV-Vis and FTIR show the effective reduction of GO and the formation of Ag NPs using l-Met. FESEM, TEM, and XRD analysis show the successful impregnation of Ag NPs into RGO with a 23 nm average crystallite size. The RGO–Ag nanocomposite with NaBH4 shows a fast-catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AMP). The enhanced catalytic activity of RGO–Ag nanocomposites can be attributed to the synergistic effect of improved adsorption capacity and the absence of agglomeration of Ag nanoparticles. Moreover, RGO–Ag showed strong antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and E. coli. Herein, we have reported a facile and green synthesis approach of Ag NP decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) through an in situ self-assembly method in the presence of l-methionine (l-Met) as reducing and stabilizing agent.![]()

Abstract
Biologically mediated inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are considered as a green, cheap, and environmental-friendly materials, which connect the nanotechnology and biomedical sciences. Metallic NPs such as gold and silver NPs, synthesized using natural materials are an important branch of inorganic NPs with catalytic functionalities and a diverse range of biomedical applications such as antimicrobial application. Polysaccharides are excellent candidates to stabilize and control the size of NPs during the synthesis process. These polymers possess multiple binding sites, which facilitate attachment to the metal surface. As a result, polysaccharides can effectively create an organic-inorganic network of the metal NPs and confer a significant protection against aggregation and chemical modifications. This chapter discusses the methods of the preparation of polysaccharide-mediated NPs and reviews various types and diverse applications for these novel materials.

Abstract
Emerging nano-biosensing with suspended MNP microbial extraction and EANP labeling may ensure a secure microbe-free food supply, as rapid response detection of microbial contamination is of utmost importance. Many biosensor designs have been proposed over the past two decades, covering a broad range of binding ligands, signal amplification, and detection mechanisms. These designs may consist of self-contained test strips developed from the base up with complicated nanoparticle chemistry and intricate ligand immobilization. Other methods use multiple step-wise additions, many based upon ELISA 96-well plate technology with fluorescent detection. In addition, many biosensors use expensive antibody receptors or DNA ligands. But many of these proposed designs are impracticable for most applications or users, since they don't FIRST address the broad goals of any biosensor: Field operability, Inexpensive, with Real-time detection that is both Sensitive and Specific to target, while being as Trouble-free as possible. Described in this review are applications that utilize versatile magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) extraction, electrically active nanoparticles (EANP) labeling, and carbohydrate-based ligand chemistry. MNP provide rapid pathogen extraction from liquid samples. EANP labeling improves signal amplification and expands signaling options to include optical and electrical detection. Carbohydrate ligands are inexpensive, robust structures that are increasingly synthesized for higher selectivity. Used in conjunction with optical or electrical detection of gold nanoparticles (AuNP), carbohydrate-functionalized MNP-cell-AuNP nano-biosensing advances the goal of being the FIRST biosensor of choice in detecting microbial pathogens throughout our food supply chain.

Abstract
Colloidal inorganic nanoparticles have wide applications in the detection of analytes and in biological assays. A large number of these assays rely on the ability of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, in the 20 nm diameter size range) to undergo a color change from red to blue upon aggregation. AuNP assays can be based on cross-linking, non-cross linking or unmodified charge-based aggregation. Nucleic acid-based probes, monoclonal antibodies, and molecular-affinity agents can be attached by covalent or non-covalent means. Surface plasmon resonance and SERS techniques can be utilized. Silver NPs also have attractive optical properties (higher extinction coefficient). Combinations of AuNPs and AgNPs in nanocomposites can have additional advantages. Magnetic NPs and ZnO, TiO2 and ZnS as well as insulator NPs including SiO2 can be employed in colorimetric assays, and some can act as peroxidase mimics in catalytic applications. This review covers the synthesis and stabilization of inorganic NPs and their diverse applications in colorimetric and optical assays for analytes related to environmental contamination (metal ions and pesticides), and for early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, using medically important biomarkers.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are natural biopolymers that have been recognized to be the most promising hosts for the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) because of their outstanding biocompatible and biodegradable properties. Polysaccharides are diverse in size and molecular chains, making them suitable for the reduction and stabilization of MNPs. Considerable research has been directed toward investigating polysaccharide-based metallic nanoparticles (PMNPs) through host⁻guest strategy. In this review, approaches of preparation, including top-down and bottom-up approaches, are presented and compared. Different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering are discussed in detail. Besides, the applications of PMNPs in the field of wound healing, targeted delivery, biosensing, catalysis and agents with antimicrobial, antiviral and anticancer capabilities are specifically highlighted. The controversial toxicological effects of PMNPs are also discussed. This review can provide significant insights into the utilization of polysaccharides as the hosts to synthesize MPNs and facilitate their further development in synthesis approaches, characterization techniques as well as potential applications.

Abstract
Various commercial dextrins were used as reducing and stabilizing agents for a novel one-step synthesis of silver nanoparticles from ammonia complexes of silver ions. As a result, stable colloids of silver were formed during the reaction with the particle size being the function of the dextrin type. The obtained colloids were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry, size distribution (using Non-Invasive Backscatter optics) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The achieved results clearly indicate the possibility of low-cost production of large quantities of colloidal silver nanoparticles using materials derived from renewable sources. The resulting silver colloids can be used for different purposes, e.g. as bactericidal agents. Combination of the aforementioned properties of nanosilver particles with plasticizing properties of dextrin enables to obtain cement mortars with increased workability and enhanced compressive strength. Moreover, the obtained material is also characterized by increased immunity to adverse impact of microorganisms.
