Abstract
Hematopoiesis is the process by which blood cells are generated. During embryonic development, these cells migrate through different organs until they reach the bone marrow, their definitive place in adulthood. Around E10.5, the fetal liver starts budding from the gut, where first hematopoietic cells arrive and expand. Hematopoietic cell migration occurs through cytokine stimulation, receptor expression, and glycosylation patterns on the cell surface. In addition, carbohydrates can modulate different cell activation states. For this reason, we aimed to characterize and quantify fetal megakaryocytic cells in mouse fetal liver according to their glycan residues at different gestational ages through lectins. Mouse fetuses between E11.5 and E18.5 were formalin-fixed and, paraffin-embedded, for immunofluorescence analysis using confocal microscopy. The results showed that the following sugar residues were expressed in proliferating and differentiating megakaryocytes in the fetal liver at different gestational ages: α-mannose, α-glucose, galactose, GlcNAc, and two types of complex oligosaccharides. Megakaryocytes also showed three proliferation waves during liver development at E12.5, E14.5, and E18.5. Additionally, the lectins that exhibited high and specific pattern intensities at liver capsules and vessels were shown to be a less time-consuming and robust alternative alternative to conventional antibodies for displaying liver structures such as capsules and vessels, as well as for megakaryocyte differentiation in the fetal liver.

Abstract
Since the early discovery of plant lectins at the end of the 19th century, and the finding that they could agglutinate erythrocytes and precipitate glycans from their solutions, many applications and biological roles have been described for these proteins. Later, the observed erythrocytes clumping features were attributed to the lectin-cell surface glycoconjugates recognition. Neoplastic transformation leads to various cellular alterations which impact the growth of the cell and its persistence, among which is the mutation in the outer surface glycosylation signatures. Quite a few lectins have been found to act as excellent biomarkers for cancer diagnosis while some were presented with antiproliferative activity that initiated by lectin binding to the respective glycocalyx receptors. These properties are blocked by the hapten sugar that is competing for the lectin affinity binding site. In vitro investigations of lectin-cancer cell's glycocalyx interactions lead to a series of immunological reactions that result in autophagy or apoptosis of the transformed cells. Mistletoe lectin, an agglutinin purified from the European Viscum album is the first plant lectin employed in the treatment of cancer to enter into the clinical trial phases. The entrapment of lectin in nanoparticles besides other techniques to promote bioavailability and stability have also been recently studied. This review summarizes our up-to-date understanding of the future applications of plant lectins in cancer prognosis and diagnosis. With the provision of many examples of lectins that exhibit anti-neoplastic properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lectins are proteins with therapeutic and diagnostic potential that can be applied in battling various ailments. AIM AND OBJECTIVE This study was designed to purify and characterize the hemagglutinating activity derived from the leaves of Calotropis procera and its possible role in protecting the stomach against ethanol-induced lesions. METHODS The Calotropis procera leaf lectin (ProLec), was isolated by homogenization of the defatted leaf powder in Phosphate-Buffered Saline (PBS) and purified by affinity chromatography on Sephadex G-100. The lectin was eluted from the affinity column by 3% acetic acid and was physicochemically characterized. In a dose-dependent manner, ProLec was administered to rats with ethanol-induced ulcers, and biochemical, histopathological, and toxicological examinations were performed. RESULTS ProLec is a heterodimer of 75 and 68 kDa. It agglutinated all human RBCs, whereas it showed weak interaction with animal erythrocytes. The protein was optimally active at 25 °C and was labile above this temperature. ProLec exhibited two pH optima and was a metalloprotein requiring Ca, Mn, and Ni. It contains 1.6% tryptophan residues of which about 1% is exposed and critical for lectin activity. The lectin exhibited a potent gastroprotective effect against ethanolinduced gastric lesions with no apparent toxicity to both kidneys and liver. Examination of the pH of the gastric juice of lectin-treated animals indicated a possible role of lectin in maintaining stomach acidity within the normal ranges compared to the gastric juice pH of animals that received ethanol only. CONCLUSION These results may suggest that ProLec could conceivably be a good future drug for the treatment of gastric ulcers, however, extensive immunological and toxicological research remains to be done.

Abstract
A novel Entadin lectin was isolated, purified, and characterized from the seeds of Entada rheedii by ammonium sulfate precipitation, followed by lactose affinity chromatography. On sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the purified Entadin lectin appeared as a single band (monomeric in nature) with a molecular mass of approximately 20 kDa in both reducing and nonreducing conditions. Mass spectroscopic analysis confirms the molecular weight of Entadin lectin as 19,333 Da. Entadin lectin showed a highest titer value in agglutination against human blood group B red blood cells, and its hemagglutination activity was inhibited by lactose, cellobiose, and galactose. Periodic acid Schiff staining confirmed the glycoprotein nature of Entadin lectin with an approximately 5% carbohydrate content. This lectin is highly stable even after incubation at a wide range of temperatures (30-60 °C) and pHs (6-10). The antiproliferative effect of Entadin lectin against lung cancer cells A549 and cervical cancer cells HeLa showed IC50 values of 28 and 32 μg/mL, respectively, and no antiproliferative activity against normal cells was observed. Cell morphological studies revealed that Entadin lectin induced apoptosis in both A549 and HeLa cancer cells, which was confirmed by acridine orange/ethidium bromide and Hoechst (33258) nuclear counterstaining.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effect of standard preservation of bean seeds on changes in contents and activity of their selected components: dry matter, ash, different forms of nitrogen, composition of protein fractions; total phenolics and condensed tannins; ability to chelate iron(II) ions; antiradical activity against ABTS•+ and DPPH•; and capability for inhibiting autoxidation and enzymatic oxidation of linoleic acid. The conducted technological process caused various changes in contents of nitrogen forms and partial loss of phenolic compounds. The antiradical and antioxidative activity of the extracts decreased significantly, while an increase was observed in their ability to chelate Fe(II). These changes were due to the migration of active compounds to the brine, and to their structural transformations and degradation. Longer storage of the sterilized product caused restoration of part of the antiradical activity of the seeds.

Abstract
Digestive system cancers-those of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon-rectum, liver, and pancreas-are highly related to genetics and lifestyle. Most are considered highly mortal due to the frequency of late diagnosis, usually in advanced stages, caused by the absence of symptoms or masked by other pathologies. Different tools are being investigated in the search of a more precise diagnosis and treatment. Plant lectins have been studied because of their ability to recognize and bind to carbohydrates, exerting a variety of biological activities on animal cells, including anticancer activities. The present report integrates existing information on the activity of plant lectins on various types of digestive system cancers, and surveys the current state of research into their properties for diagnosis and selective treatment.

Abstract
The physicochemical, functional, antioxidant and anticancer properties of protein isolates from the seeds of Soybean (SP), Black soybean (BSP), Adzuki bean (ABP), and Mung bean (MBP) were comparatively characterized. The difference was found in the protein composition and physicochemical properties of the four types of legume proteins, which affected the functional properties and bioactivities. BSP and SP had six predominant proteins with a molecular weight (MW) range of 20-95 kDa, whereas ABP and MBP showed the most intense bands of 48 kDa. ABP with higher essential amino acids content and the highest solubility exhibited the highest antioxidant activities among the four types of proteins. While BSP with higher content of acidic amino acids, low content of the hydrophobic amino acids and higher WHC, may have potential nutraceutical uses.
