Recent advances in removal of inorganic anions from water by chitosan-based composites: A comprehensive review

Chitosan is a modified natural carbohydrate polymer that has been found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans (e.g., lobsters, shrimps, krill, barnacles, crayfish, etc.), mollusks (octopus, oysters, squids, snails), algae (diatoms, brown algae, green algae), insects (silkworms, beetles, scorpions), and the cell walls of fungi (such as Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, and Phycomycetes; for example, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum). However, it is mostly acquired from marine crustaceans such as shrimp shells. Chitosan-based composites often present superior chemical, physical, and mechanical properties compared to single chitosan by incorporating the benefits of both counterparts in the nanocomposites. The tunable surface chemistry, abundant surface-active sites, facilitation synthesize and functionalization, good recyclability, and economic viability make the chitosan-based materials potential adsorbents for effective and fast removal of a broad range of inorganic anions. This article reviews the different types of inorganic anions and their effects on the environment and human health. The development of the chitosan-based composites synthesis, the various parameters like initial concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, temperature, the mechanism of adsorption, and regeneration of adsorbents are discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and technical challenges are emphasized to improve the performance of chitosan-based composites in actual applications on a pilot or industrial scale.

Amination-modified lignin recovery of aqueous phosphate for use as binary slow-release fertilizer

To address the global phosphorus crisis and solve the problem of eutrophication in water bodies, the recovery of phosphate from wastewater for use as a slow-release fertilizer and to improve the slow-release performance of fertilizers is considered an effective way. In this study, amine-modified lignin (AL) was prepared from industrial alkali lignin (L) for phosphate recovery from water bodies, and then the recovered phosphorus-rich aminated lignin (AL-P) was used as a slow-release N and P fertilizer. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process was consistent with the Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. In addition, ion competition and actual aqueous adsorption experiments showed that AL had good adsorption selectivity and removal capacity. The adsorption mechanism included electrostatic adsorption, ionic ligand exchange and cross-linked addition reaction. In the aqueous release experiments, the rate of nitrogen release was constant and the release of phosphorus followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Soil column leaching experiments showed that the release of N and P from AL-P in soil followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Therefore, AL recovery of aqueous phosphate for use as a binary slow-release fertilizer has great potential to improve the environment of water bodies, enhance nutrient utilization and address the global phosphorus crisis.

Fabrication of Novel Bio-Composites Based on Rice Milk for the Delivery of Capsaicinoids as Green Herbicides against Cynodon dactylon Weed

In this paper, rice milk-based beads were fabricated through gelation in a calcium chloride solution. Green extraction of chili pepper in water/ethanol was conducted in order to obtain powder extract (PE) rich in apigenin C-pentosyl-C-hexoside, capsaicin, and dihydrocapsaicin. The effect of capsaicinoids loading on beads’ properties was evaluated in terms of morphological and physical properties. Swelling phenomena and diameter variation of beads were studied as a function of time proving correspondence with the PE amount. The effect of ionic strength on bead swelling was considered. Kinetic studies of PE release were conducted to investigate the release profiles, which were modeled through a modified Baker and Lonsdale model by considering the change in mean diameter over time. The effect of PE loading was then correlated to the growth of Cynodon dactylon weed through in vivo tests. The results corroborate the performances of the encapsulated PE to be used as natural and green herbicide release systems able to inhibit the growth and the proliferation of weeds.

Biosorption of metribuzin pesticide by Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) peels-zinc oxide nanoparticles composite

Herein, a biosorbent was prepared from cucumber peels modified with ZnO nanoparticles (CPZiONp-composite) for the biosorption of metribuzin. Characterization of the composite was accomplished using FTIR, SEM, EDX, surface area pore size analyzer and pH of point of zero charge (pH_pzc). Biosorption study was executed in batch concerning the impact of pH, composite dose, contact time, initial metribuzin concentration and temperature. The biosorption depends on pH and maximum biosorption was acquired at pH 3.0. Surface chemistry of the composite was studied by determining the pH_pzc and was found to be 6.1. The biosorption nature was investigated using isotherms and was assessed that Freundlich isotherm is well suited for the fitting of the biosorption data owing to the highest R². The maximum biosorption capacity of CPZiONp-composite was found to be 200 mg g^-1. The biosorption data were fitted in to different kinetic models and the outcomes suggesting that pseudo second order is a satisfactory model to interpret the biosorption data owing to the highest R². Thermodynamic parameters for instance entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy were computed and revealed that biosorption of metribuzin onto CPZiONp-composite is spontaneous and exothermic process.

A critical review of various adsorbents for selective removal of nitrate from water: Structure, performance and mechanism

Nitrate is ubiquitous pollutant due to its high water solubility, usually contributing to eutrophication, and posing a threat to aquatic ecosystem and human health. Adsorption approach has been widely used for nitrate removal because of the simplicity, easy operation, and low cost. Adsorbent plays a key role in the adsorptive removal of nitrate. The adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism are determined by the structural feature of adsorbent that is dependent on the preparation method. In this review, various types of adsorbents for nitrate removal were systematically summarized, their preparation, characterization, and adsorption performance were evaluated; the factors influencing the nitrate adsorption performance were discussed; the adsorption isotherm models, kinetic models and thermodynamic parameters were examined; and the possible adsorption mechanisms responsible for nitrate adsorption were categorized; the possible correlation of adsorbent structure to adsorption performance and adsorption mechanism were explained; the potential applications of adsorbents were discussed; finally, the strategies for improving adsorption capacity and selectivity towards nitrate, the challenges and future perspectives for developing novel adsorbent were also proposed. This review will deepen the understanding of nitrate removal by adsorption process and help the development of high-performance adsorbents for selective nitrate removal from water and wastewater.

A review on the use of chitosan and chitosan derivatives as the bio-adsorbents for the water treatment: Removal of nitrogen-containing pollutants

Chitosan and its derivatives have been widely used as the adsorbents for different types of water pollutants. This review paper lists various physically and chemically modified chitosan-based adsorbents such as chitosan beads, cross-linked chitosan, chitosan-polymer composites, chitosan-inorganic material composites, and chitosan-metal complexes for the removal of nitrogen-containing pollutants (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and ammonium ions) from aqueous solutions. It covers preparation strategies, the effect of modification on adsorbent structure, and the impact of adsorption variables using batch and fixed-bed column studies. In addition to demonstrating the applications of chitosan and its derivatives in the removal of nitrogenous pollutants from water, it helps researchers understand the influence of modification of chitosan on its adsorption capacity as well as physical and chemical properties.

Chitosan based adsorbents for the removal of phosphate and nitrate: A critical review

The tremendous development in the industrial sector leads to discharging of the several types of effluents containing detrimental contaminants into water sources. Lately, the proliferation of toxic anions particularly phosphates and nitrates onto aquatic systems certainly depreciates the ecological system and causes a deadly serious problem. Chitosan (Cs) is one of the most auspicious biopolymer adsorbents that are being daily developed for removing of various contaminants from polluted water. This is due to its unparalleled benefits involving biocompatibility, non-toxicity, facile modifications and low-cost production. Nevertheless, chitosan displays considerable drawbacks including low adsorption capacity, low surface area and lack of reusability. Therefore, few findings have been established regarding the aptitude of modified chitosan-based adsorbents towards phosphate and nitrate anions. This review elaborates an overview for the current advances of modified chitosan based-adsorbent for phosphate and nitrate removal, in specific multivalent metals-modified chitosan, clays and zeolite-modified chitosan, magnetic chitosan and carbon materials-modified chitosan. The efforts that have been executed for enriching their adsorption characteristics as well as their possible adsorption mechanisms and reusability were well addressed. Besides, the research conclusions for the optimum adsorption conditions were also discussed, along with emphasizing the foremost research gaps and future potential trends that could motivate further research and innovation to find best solutions for water treatment problems facing the world.

Efficacy of green waste-derived biochar for lead removal from aqueous systems: Characterization, equilibrium, kinetic and application

The removal of toxic metals from the aquatic ecosystem is one of the most pressing environmental and public health concerns today. A strong potential has recently emerged for the removal of such metals using biochar sorbents. Biosorption technology could make a significant difference in the future. It is a viable and cost-effective alternative to the remediation of toxic pollutants utilizing various biomaterials. In the current study, batch and fixed-bed studies were performed to evaluate the performance of Capsicum annuum L. seeds biochar (CASB) as an alternative material in removing toxic Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Removal characteristics were investigated by considering the equilibrium and kinetic aspects. Biosorption equilibrium was established within 40 min. The optimum dosage of CASB for Pb(II) removal was determined as 2.0 g L^-1. Biosorption data were well predicted by a non-linear Langmuir isotherm model. Monolayer biosorption occurred for CASB with a maximum capacity of 36.43 mg g^-1. Biosorption kinetics fitted well with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The external mass transfer may control Pb(II) transport mechanism. Dynamic flow mode biosorption and regeneration potential of CASB were also examined. The application of CASB exhibited a 100% removal yield in real apple juice samples spiked with low concentrations of Pb(II). Exhausted points for the CASB packed columns were recorded as 195 and 320 min for simulated wastewater (SW) and synthetic Pb(II) solution, respectively. FTIR, BET, SEM-EDX analysis, and zeta potential measurements were used for the characterization of biochar and assessment of the metal ion-biosorbent interaction mechanism. Finally, our study provides a practical approach for the uptake of Pb(II) ions from contaminated solutions.

Biodegradable chitosan-ethylene glycol hydrogel effectively adsorbs nitrate in water

Nitrate, existing as inorganic anions in water, possesses high water-solubility and has caused lots of contaminations around the world. It is thus extremely urgent to develop an effective method to effectively remove nitrate from water in a sustainable way. In this study, chitosan-ethylene glycol hydrogel (CEGH) was synthesized using the repeated freezing-thawing procedure. A range of batch sorption experiments were conducted to evaluate CEGH as a nitrate sorbent. The adsorption isotherms of nitrate onto CEGH followed the Langmuir model with coefficient of determination of 0.98 and a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of 49.04 mg/g, which is higher than that of other adsorbents. The adsorption of nitrate onto CEGH was affected by pH value and temperature. The results indicate that the main removal mechanism was polarity of CEGH molecules given by functional group O-H and N-H and hydrogen bond interaction between CEGH and nitrate molecules under acidic conditions. Therefore, CEGH, a biodegradable carbon-rich adsorbent, can be widely applied to remove nitrate in wastewater treatment and water body remediation.

Phosphorus removal from aqueous solution using modified walnut and almond wooden shell and recycling as soil amendment

Modified walnut wooden shell (MWWS) and almond wooden shell (MAWS) as novel anion exchangers were used to remove phosphorus (P) from aqueous solution. The raw and modified agricultural wastes were characterized using total N, total P, FT-IR spectra, SEM, BET, and EXD analysis. The effect of different parameters such as pH (4 to 8), contact time (5 to 600 min), and adsorbent dosage (1 to 8 g L^-1) on P adsorption was investigated. Adsorption of P onto MWWS and MAWS was studied using the batch technique with different concentration of P (5 to 200 mg L^-1) at 25 ± 2 °C. The P adsorption isotherms were fitted with the Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The k and n values were 1.57 mg g^-1 and 1.88 for MWWS and 1.91 mg g^-1 and 2.24 for MAWS, respectively. The maximum P adsorption capacities for MWWS and MAWS were 22.73 and 14.71 mg g^-1, respectively. The desorption-regeneration experimental results indicated about 4% and 3% reductions in MWWS and MAWS P adsorption efficiency after four consecutive regeneration cycles, respectively. The data well fitted with Pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R² ≥ 0.99), indicating that chemical interactions dominate the P adsorption process. Incubation studies showed the rate of P release in treated soil with P-loaded modified biosorbents was higher than control. Therefore, the MWWS and MAWS can potentially be used as an excellent adsorbent in remediation of contaminated waters by P and then recycled to soil.

Biosorption of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution by polyethyleneimine-modified ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrochar from Sargassum horneri

In this study, an efficient route to synthesizing polyethyleneimine-modified ultrasonic-assisted acid hydrochar (PEI-USAH) is developed and reported. Ultrasonic irradiation technique was used as surface modification method to shorten the crosslinking reaction for hydrochar and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The PEI-USAH showed an excellent adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of this PEI-modified adsorbent were comparatively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis and CNHS analysis. The effects of contact time, initial pH, and biosorbent dose on adsorption capacities were investigated. The batch adsorption experiments showed that PEI-USAH possessed the maximum adsorption capacities of 94.38 mg/g and 330.84 mg/g for initial Cr(VI) concentration of 100 mg/L and 500 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, this adsorption process could be fitted to Langmuir adsorption and described by the pseudo second order kinetic model. Based on the above findings, PEI-USAH could be used as a potential adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.
