Therapeutic applications of carbon nanomaterials in renal cancer

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and nanodiamonds (NDs), have shown great promise in detecting and treating numerous cancers, including kidney cancer. CNMs can increase the sensitivity of diagnostic techniques for better kidney cancer identification and surveillance. They enable targeted medicine delivery specifically to tumour locations, with little effect on healthy tissue. Because of their unique chemical and physical characteristics, they can avoid the body's defence mechanisms, making it easier to accumulate where tumours exist. Consequently, CNMs provide more effective drug delivery to kidney cancer cells. It also helps in improving the efficacy of treatment. This review explores the potential of several CNMs in improving therapeutic strategies for kidney cancer. We briefly covered the physicochemical properties and therapeutic applications of CNMs. Additionally, we discussed how structural modifications in CNMs enhance their precision in treating renal cancer. A thorough overview of CNM-based gene, peptide, and drug delivery strategies for the treatment of renal cancer is presented in this review. It covers information on other CNM-based therapeutic approaches, such as hyperthermia, photodynamic therapy, and photoacoustic therapy. Also, the interactions of CNMs with the tumour microenvironment (TME) are explored, including modulation of the immune response, regulation of tumour hypoxia, interactions between CNMs and TME cells, effects of TME pH on CNMs, and more. Finally, potential side effects of CNMs, such as toxicity, bio corona formation, enzymatic degradation, and biocompatibility, are also discussed.

Evolution of Micron-Spaced Patterns within Precipitating Patterns of In Situ Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles in a Nanodot-Embedded PVA/PVP Film

Periodic pattern formation beyond conventional precipitation reactions of electrolytes is of greater importance for gaining insights into the driving forces behind spontaneous spatiotemporal pattern formation in living matter. The Liesegang phenomenon is considered to be one of the important models for understanding well-defined periodic patterns. In this study, we have used biomolecule-derived photoluminescent carbon nanodots as reducing agents that were embedded in thin polymer films. The poor water content of polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinyl pyrrolidone films has been found to dictate the temporal scale of reaction-diffusion kinetics. Moreover, the precursors for the synthesis of nanodots have been varied to decipher the role of thiol groups present in glutathione in micron-spaced pattern formation of silver nanoparticles. A method to develop periodic patterns of plasmonic silver nanoparticles is of significant interest from technological aspects. Moreover, the formation of a micron-spaced pattern has been rationed by invoking a lowered nucleation threshold in terms of slow reaction-controlled aggregation. We expect that such an understanding of the chemical reaction-based pattern formation will help in resolving the formation of artistic spatiotemporal patterns in nature.

Environmentally Benign Carbon Nanodots Prepared from Lemon for the Sensitive and Selective Fluorescence Detection of Fe(III) and Tannic Acid

Photoluminescent carbon nanodots (CNDs) were prepared using a biocarbon source of lemon extract. The obtained CNDs are of spherical shape and are enriched with the carboxylic acid fucntionalities. CNDs exhibited a fluorescence emission at 445 nm and unveiled blue luminescence in ultraviolet excitation. The influences of pH and ionic strength toward the stability of CNDs were investigated in detail and the obtained stability authenticates their applicability in different environmental conditions. The competitive binding of Fe³⁺ with CNDs quenches the fluorescence behavior of CNDs and was further quenched with the selective complex formation of Fe³⁺ with tannic acid (TA). The interference experiments specified that CNDs-Fe³⁺ assembly selectively detected TA and the co-existing molecules have not influenced the quenching effect of TA with CNDs-Fe³⁺. The analytical reliability of constructed sensor was validated from the recovery obtained in the range of 91.66-107.02% in real samples. Thus the low cost and environmentally benign CNDs prepared from natural biomass provide new avenues in the fluorescence detection of biologically significant metal ions and biomolecules, facilitating their competency in on-site applications of real environmental samples.
