Preparation, characterization and evaluation of glycerol plasticized chitosan/PVA blends for burn wounds

The role of glycerol in manufacturing freeze-dried chitosan and cellulose foams for mechanically stable scaffolds in skin tissue engineering

Various strategies have extensively explored enhancing the physical and biological properties of chitosan and cellulose scaffolds for skin tissue engineering. This study presents a straightforward method involving the addition of glycerol into highly porous structures of two polysaccharide complexes: chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose (Chit/CMC) and chitosan/oxidized cellulose (Chit/OC); during a one-step freeze-drying process. Adding glycerol, especially to Chit/CMC, significantly increased stability, prevented degradation, and improved mechanical strength by nearly 50%. Importantly, after 21 days of incubation in enzymatic medium Chit/CMC scaffold has almost completely decomposed, while foams reinforced with glycerol exhibited only 40% mass loss. It is possible due to differences in multivalent cations and polymer chain contraction, resulting in varied hydrogen bonding and, consequently, distinct physicochemical outcomes. Additionally, the scaffolds with glycerol improved the cellular activities resulting in over 40% higher proliferation of fibroblast after 21 days of incubation. It was achieved by imparting water resistance to the highly absorbent material and aiding in achieving a balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. This study clearly indicates the possible elimination of additional crosslinkers and multiple fabrication steps that can reduce the cost of scaffold production for skin tissue engineering applications while tailoring mechanical strength and degradation.

Chitosan and neem gum-based polyelectrolyte complex for design of allantoin loaded biocomposite film: In-vitro, ex-vivo, and in-vivo characterization

Presently, the preference for chitosan (CS) and gum polysaccharides in biomedical applications including drug delivery and wound healing has been extensively documented. Despite this, the demerits of CS and gum polysaccharides such as poor mechanical properties, degradation rate, swelling, etc., limit their applications for designing biocomposite films for drug delivery. Therefore, the anticipated work aims to design a CS and neem gum polysaccharides (NGP) polyelectrolyte complex-based allantoin (AT)-loaded (CS/NGP-AT) biocomposite film for improved wound healing. In brief, CS, NGP, and CS/NGP-AT-based biocomposite films were prepared using the solvent-casting method, and in-vitro, ex-vivo, and in-vivo characterizations were performed to assess the performance of these biocomposite films compared to their counterparts. In this, diffractogram and thermogram analysis assured the conversion of crystalline AT into an amorphous form. The optimized CS/NGP/AT-3 formulation exhibited controlled water absorption, appropriate water uptake capacity, good water retention ability, excellent water vapor transmission rate, controlled degradation rate, enhanced mechanical properties, cell and blood biocompatibility, etc. Furthermore, it offered improved antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant potential. The optimized film provided a modified release (88.3 ± 0.3 %) of AT from the film for up to 48 h. Wound healing experiments on rats and their histopathology studies confirmed a significantly higher rate of wound recovery within 14 days compared to the control and CS/NGP film, attributable to the combined effects of CS, NGP, and AT. In conclusion, the fabricated CS/NGP-based biocomposite film presents promising prospects as an excellent candidate for wound healing applications.

All-natural chitosan-based polyimine vitrimer with multiple advantages: A novel strategy to solve nondegradable plastic waste pollution

The increasing amount of nondegradable petroleum-based plastic waste releases chemical hazards, posing a significant threat to the environment and human health. Chitosan, derived from marine wastes, is an attractive feedstock for the preparation of plastic replacement due to its renewable and degradable nature. However, in most cases, complex chemical modifications of chitosan or hybridization with chemicals from fossil resources are required. Herein, we present a high-performance chitosan-based polyimine vitrimer (CS-PI) through a mild and catalyst-free Schiff base reaction between chitosan and vanillin. The CS-PI were formed by integrating dynamic imine bonds into the polymer networks, resulting in superior thermo-processability and mechanical performances. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of the CS-PI films reached 38.72 MPa and 3.20 GPa, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of both commercial petroleum-based plastics and bioplastics. Additionally, the CS-PI films exhibited good light transmittance, self-healing ability, reprocess capacity, water resistance, and durability to various organic solvents. Moreover, the CS-PI films could be completely degraded under both acidic and natural conditions, enabling a sustainable circulation. Therefore, this work offers a new design strategy for developing all-natural environmentally friendly polymers as sustainable replacements for petroleum-based plastics, thus reducing the accumulation of nondegradable plastic waste.

Production, characterization, and antimicrobial activity of almond gum/polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite films containing thyme essential oil nanoemulsion for extending the shelf-life of chicken breast fillets

In this study, thyme essential oil (TEO) nanoemulsion was immobilized within composite films based on almond gum (AG), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan (CS). The physical, mechanical, water barrier, microstructural and antimicrobial properties of composite films were assessed. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the intermolecular interactions in the composite film matrix. The results indicated that the incorporation of TEO into the composite films increased thickness, moisture content, and water vapor permeability, while it reduced light transmittance and transparency value. The antimicrobial activity of films against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria was tested using a disc diffusion method. The effect of composite on the microbiological properties of chicken breast fillets was investigated during refrigerated storage for 21 days. The microbial populations of total mesophilic, psychrotrophic, and lactic acid bacteria of the samples that were coated with the composite containing TEO were lower than the permitted limit after 21 days while for blank samples they were higher than 7 log CFU/g after 7 days which is considered as the maximum acceptable total count limit. Results disclosed that AG/PVA/CS composite films containing TEO nanoemulsion can be applied as eco-friendly active food packaging to enhance the shelf-life of food products.

Fabrication of biodegradable blend plastic from konjac glucomannan/zein/ PVA and understanding its multi-scale structure and physicochemical properties

Exploration and synthesis of degradable plastics can alleviate and avoid environmental pollution induced by petroleum-based plastics. In this study, a konjac glucomannan (KGM)/zein/PVA ternary blend plastic was successfully prepared by casting. The results showed that, despite the presence of particle aggregation from incompatible components in blend plastic, the addition of KGM and zein improved its compatibility which is consistent with the formation of continuous dark regions and the reduction of roughness average (Ra) results in the AFM characterization. Also, XRD and FT-IR results indicated that the addition of KGM and zein disrupted the molecular and crystalline structure of PVA, induced stretching vibration of alcohol and hydroxyl groups, and crystallinity reduction. In addition, KGM deacetylation (d-KGM) reduced the intramolecular hydroxyl groups, reduced the water absorption and water vapor transmission rate of the blend plastics, and increased the crystallization temperature (Tc) and melting temperature (Tm). Furthermore, the blended plastics exhibited the best tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), and elastic modulus (EM) when the proportion of KGM to zein was 9:1. Notably, the blended plastic with KGM and zein added displayed more pores and cracks after soil burial, implying that the lack of degradability of pure PVA plastic was improved.

Chitosan characteristics in electrolyte solutions: Combined molecular dynamics modeling and slender body hydrodynamics

Molecular dynamics modeling was applied to predict chitosan molecule conformations, the contour length, the gyration radius, the effective cross-section and the density in electrolyte solutions. Using various experimental techniques the diffusion coefficient, the hydrodynamic diameter and the electrophoretic mobility of molecules were determined. This allowed to calculate the zeta potential, the electrokinetic charge and the effective ionization degree of the chitosan molecule as a function of pH and the temperature. The chitosan solution density and zero shear dynamic viscosity were also measured, which enabled to determine the intrinsic viscosity increment. The experimental results were quantitatively interpreted in terms of the slender body hydrodynamics exploiting molecule characteristics derived from the modeling. It is also confirmed that this approach can be successfully used for a proper interpretation of previous literature data obtained under various physicochemical conditions.

Production and application of biomaterials based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as wound dressing: A mini review

The development of ideal wound dressing with excellent properties, such as exudate absorption capacity, drug release control ability, and increased wound healing, is currently a major requirement for wound healing. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a biodegradable semi-crystalline synthetic polymer that has been used in the field of biotechnology such as tissue regeneration, wound dressing, and drug delivery systems. In recent years, PVA-based wound dressing materials have received considerable attention due to their excellent properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity and low cost. PVA can be used as a wound dressing material to create the necessary moist wound environment, improve the physical properties of the dressing, and increase the wound healing rates. In addition, PVA can also be mixed with other organic and inorganic materials and can be used for drug delivery and wound healing. This review article addresses the role of biomaterials based on PVA mixed with other ingredients for wound dressing. It also focuses on its recent use in wound dressings as carriers of active substances.

Chitosans and Nanochitosans: Recent Advances in Skin Protection, Regeneration, and Repair

Chitosan displays a dual function, acting as both an active ingredient and/or carrier for pharmaceutical bioactive molecules and metal ions. Its hydroxyl- and amino-reactive groups and acetylation degree can be used to adjust this biopolymer's physicochemical and pharmacological properties in different forms, including scaffolds, nanoparticles, fibers, sponges, films, and hydrogels, among others. In terms of pharmacological purposes, chitosan association with different polymers and the immobilization or entrapment of bioactive agents are effective strategies to achieve desired biological responses. Chitosan biocompatibility, water entrapment within nanofibrils, antioxidant character, and antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, whether enhanced by other active components or not, ensure skin moisturization, as well as protection against bacteria colonization and oxidative imbalance. Chitosan-based nanomaterials can maintain or reconstruct skin architecture through topical or systemic delivery of hydrophilic or hydrophobic pharmaceuticals at controlled rates to treat skin affections, such as acne, inflammatory manifestations, wounds, or even tumorigenesis, by coating chemotherapy drugs. Herein, chitosan obtention, physicochemical characteristics, chemical modifications, and interactions with bioactive agents are presented and discussed. Molecular mechanisms involved in chitosan skin protection and recovery are highlighted by overlapping the events orchestrated by the signaling molecules secreted by different cell types to reconstitute healthy skin tissue structures and components.

Nanocomposite Film Development Based on Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Using ZnO@montmorillonite and ZnO@Halloysite Hybrid Nanostructures for Active Food Packaging Applications

The global turn from the linear to the circular economy imposes changes in common activities such as food packaging. The use of biodegradable materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, natural raw materials such as clays, and food byproducts such as chitosan to develop novel food packaging films attracts the interest of industrial and institutional research centers. In this study, novel hybrid nanostructures were synthesized via the growth of zinc oxide nanorods on the surface of two nanoclays. The obtained nanostructures were incorporated with chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite either as nanoreinforcement or as an active agent to develop packaging films. The developed films were characterized via XRD, FTIR, mechanical, water-vapor diffusion, water sorption, and oxygen permeability measurements. Antimicrobial activity measurements were carried out against four different pathogen microorganisms. XRD indicated the formation of an intercalated nanocomposite structure for both types of nanoclays. Furthermore, improved tensile, water/oxygen barrier, and antimicrobial properties were recorded for all films compared to the pure chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol film. Overall, the results indicated that the use of the bio-based developed films led to an extension of food shelf life and could be used as novel active food packaging materials. Among them, the most promising film was the 6% wt. ZnO@halloysite.

Waste-derived biomaterials as building blocks in the biomedical field

Recent developments in the biomedical arena have led to the fabrication of innovative biomaterials by utilizing bioactive molecules obtained from biological wastes released from fruit and beverage processing industries, and fish, meat, and poultry industries. These biological wastes that end up in water bodies as well as in landfills are an affluent source of animal- and plant-derived proteins, bio ceramics and polysaccharides such as collagens, gelatins, chitins, chitosans, eggshell membrane proteins, hydroxyapatites, celluloses, and pectins. These bioactive molecules have been intricately designed into scaffolds and dressing materials by utilizing advanced technologies for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound healing relevance. These biomaterials are environment-friendly, biodegradable, and biocompatible, and show excellent tissue regeneration attributes. Additionally, being cost-effective they can reduce the burden on the healthcare system as well as provide a sustainable solution to waste management. In this review, the current trends in the utilization of plant and animal waste-derived biomaterials in various biomedical fields are considered along with a separate section on their applications as xenografts.

The use of chitosan as a skin-regeneration agent in burns injuries: A review

Chitosan is an amino-polysaccharide, traditionally obtained by the partial deacetylation of chitin from exoskeletons of crustaceans. Properties such as biocompatibility, hemostasis, and the ability to absorb physiological fluids are attributed to this biopolymer. Chitosan’s biological properties are regulated by its origin, polymerization degree, and molecular weight. In addition, it possesses antibacterial and antifungal activities. It also has been used to prepare films, hydrogels, coatings, nanofibers, and absorbent sponges, all utilized for the healing of skin wounds. In in vivo studies with second-degree burns, healing has been achieved in at least 80% of the cases between the ninth and twelfth day of treatment with chitosan coatings. The crucial steps in the treatment of severe burns are the early excision of damaged tissue and adequate coverage to minimize the risk of infection. So far, partial-thickness autografting is considered the gold standard for the treatment of full-thickness burns. However, the limitations of donor sites have led to the development of skin substitutes. Therefore, the need for an appropriate dermal equivalent that functions as a regeneration template for the growth and deposition of new skin tissue has been recognized. This review describes the properties of chitosan that validate its potential in the treatment of skin burns.

Antibacterial multicomponent electrospun nanofibrous mat through the synergistic effect of biopolymers

The endeavor was to adopt a facile bi-layered approach to fabricate a novel PVA-chitosan-collagen-licorice nanofibrous mat (PCCLNM) with maintaining the spinning parameters and conditions to assess the synergistic antibacterial action of two biopolymers and having properties for repairing tissues. Bonding behavior, morphological orientation, antibacterial activity, and moisture management features of the electrospun nanofibrous mat were investigated using various characterization techniques. The FTIR analysis of the manufactured nanofibrous mat revealed characteristic peaks of licorice, chitosan, collagen, and PVA polymer, confirming the presence of all polymers in the sample. Additionally, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image attributes the development of nanofibers with an average diameter for top and bottom sides were 219 and 188 nm respectively. Furthermore, moisture management tests (MMT) confirm PCCLNM’s slow absorption and drying capabilities. Apart from that, a disk diffusion method was used to investigate antibacterial activity against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), which revealed a strong presence of antibacterial activity with a 20 mm zone of inhibition due to the chemical constituents of licorice and chitosan compound. The developed bio-nanocomposite could have a potential application as wound healing material.

Tailor-made shape memory stents for therapeutic enzymes: A novel approach to enhance enzyme performance

Herein, our suggestion is to immobilize enzymes in-situ on absorbable shape-memory stents instead of injecting therapeutic enzymes into the blood. Chitosan (CHI)-based stents were tailored as novel support and the enzyme-immobilizing ability was elucidated using L-asparaginase (L-ASNase). For developing shape-memory stents, CHI-glycerol (GLY) solution was prepared and further blended with different ratios of polyethylene glycol (PEG), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Afterward, the blends were modified by ionic crosslinking with sodium tripolyphosphate to obtain a shape-memory character. L-ASNase was included in the blends by using in-situ method before ionic crosslinking. The prepared stents, with or without L-ASNase, were comprehensively characterized by using several techniques. Collectively, immobilized L-ASNase exhibited much better performance in immobilization parameters than free one, thanks to its improved stability and reusability. For instance, CHI/GLY/PEG-3@L-ASNase retained about 70% of the initial activity after storage at 30 °C for 2 weeks, whereas the free form lost half of its initial activity. Besides, it retained 73.4% residual activity after 15 consecutive cycles. Most importantly, stent formulations exhibited ~60% activity in the bioreactor system after 4 weeks of incubation. Given the above results, shape-memory stents can be a promising candidate as a new platform for immobilization, especially in the blood circulation system.

Recent Advances in Experimental Burn Models

Experimental burn models are essential tools for simulating human burn injuries and exploring the consequences of burns or new treatment strategies. Unlike clinical studies, experimental models allow a direct comparison of different aspects of burns under controlled conditions and thereby provide relevant information on the molecular mechanisms of tissue damage and wound healing, as well as potential therapeutic targets. While most comparative burn studies are performed in animal models, a few human or humanized models have been successfully employed to study local events at the injury site. However, the consensus between animal and human studies regarding the cellular and molecular nature of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), scarring, and neovascularization is limited. The many interspecies differences prohibit the outcomes of animal model studies from being fully translated into the human system. Thus, the development of more targeted, individualized treatments for burn injuries remains a major challenge in this field. This review focuses on the latest progress in experimental burn models achieved since 2016, and summarizes the outcomes regarding potential methodological improvements, assessments of molecular responses to injury, and therapeutic advances.

Physico-Chemical Properties of a Hybrid Biomaterial (PVA/Chitosan) Reinforced with Conductive Fillers

In this study, a novel hybrid material based on Polyvinyl Alcohol-Chitosan (PVA-Chi) was made, reinforced with conductive fillers such as the polypyrrole (PPy), Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS), carbon black (CB), and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT). In order to observe the mechanical and electrical responses of this composite material, for obtaining composite materials, and to characterize them for the development of applications in engineering, FTIR analysis made clear the different functional groups present in the matrix and the fillers used. Using quaternary mixtures (4 fillers) increased the contact angle, which increased hydrophobicity of the biocomposite. The Nyquist diagram of the analyzed samples showed a decrease in resistance and energy diffusion; the latter because of transferring electrons caused by the conductive polymers CB and the MWCNT. In the mechanical tension tests, Young’s modulus values of 18.386 MPa were obtained, in contrast with the material matrix of PVA-Chi, which showed values of 11.628 MPa. Morphological analysis by SEM showed the materials got were homogeneous. The materials got showed higher electrical conductivity in the OH’s presence and NH2 groups, which could have possible applications in biopolymer electrodes.

Hydroxy citric acid cross-linked chitosan/guar gum/poly(vinyl alcohol) active films for food packaging applications

The present work aims to prepare Chitosan (CS)/Guar gum (GG)/Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) cross-linked with Hydroxy citric acid (HCA) (CGPH active film) by solvent casting technique. The influence of HCA on different CS/PVA ratio (1:3, 1:1, 3:1) in presence of the fixed amount of GG (0.2%) was investigated. The analysis of the results showed that the addition of HCA to the different ratio of CS/PVA increased the degradation temperature and improved the mechanical properties of CGPH active films. FTIR spectra and XRD analysis revealed strong interactions among the components of CGPH active films. The analysis of SEM images and water contact angle suggested a compact, dense film surface with hydrophobic nature. Further, all the active films have shown a decrease in water vapour permeability (WVP) and acted as a barrier to UV-light. CGPH active films effectively inhibited the growth of S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. With all these features the CGPH active films can find application in food packaging.

Chitosan and Cellulose-Based Hydrogels for Wound Management

Wound management remains a challenge worldwide, although there are several developed wound dressing materials for the management of acute and chronic wounds. The wound dressings that are currently used include hydrogels, films, wafers, nanofibers, foams, topical formulations, transdermal patches, sponges, and bandages. Hydrogels exhibit unique features which make them suitable wound dressings such as providing a moist environment for wound healing, exhibiting high moisture content, or creating a barrier against bacterial infections, and are suitable for the management of exuding and granulating wounds. Biopolymers have been utilized for their development due to their non-toxic, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. Hydrogels have been prepared from biopolymers such as cellulose and chitosan by crosslinking with selected synthetic polymers resulting in improved mechanical, biological, and physicochemical properties. They were useful by accelerating wound re-epithelialization and also mimic skin structure, inducing skin regeneration. Loading antibacterial agents into them prevented bacterial invasion of wounds. This review article is focused on hydrogels formulated from two biopolymers-chitosan and cellulose-for improved wound management.

Recent trends on wound management: New therapeutic choices based on polymeric carriers

Wound healing is an unmet therapeutic challenge among medical society since wound assessment and management is a complex procedure including several factors playing major role in healing process. Wounds can mainly be categorized as acute or chronic. It is well referred that the acute wound displays normal wound physiology while healing, in most cases, is seemed to progress through the normal phases of wound healing. On the other hand, a chronic wound is physiologically impaired. The main problem in wound management is that the majority of wounds are colonized with microbes, whereas this does not mean that all wounds will be infected. In this review, we address the problems that clinicians face to manage while treat acute and chronic wounds. Moreover, we demonstrate the pathophysiology, etiology, prognosis and microbiology of wounds. We further introduce the state of art in pharmaceutical technology field as part of wound management aiming to assist health professionals to overcome the current implications on wound assessment. In addition, authors review researches which included the use of gels and dermal films as wound healing agents. It can be said that natural and synthetic drugs or carriers provide promising solutions in order to meet the wound management standards. However, are the current strategies as desirable as medical society wish?

Antibacterial Mechanism of Curcumin: A Review

Curcumin is a plant-derived polyphenolic active substance with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. Curcumin blocks bacterial growth owing to its structural characteristics and the generation of antioxidation products. Curcumin can inhibit bacterial virulence factors, inhibit bacterial biofilm formation and prevent bacterial adhesion to host receptors through the bacterial quorum sensing regulation system. As a photosensitizer, curcumin acts under blue light irradiation to induce phototoxicity and inhibit bacterial growth. Moreover, it can exert a synergistic antibacterial effect with other antibacterial substances. In this review, we summarize the research progress on the antibacterial mechanism of curcumin based on five targeting structures and two modes of action. Our discussion provides a theoretical basis and technical foundation for the development and application of natural antibacterial agents.

Chitin and its derivatives: Structural properties and biomedical applications

Chitin, a polysaccharide that occurs abundantly in nature after cellulose, has attracted the interest of the scientific community due to its plenty of availability and low cost. Mostly, it is derived from the exoskeleton of insects and marine crustaceans. Often, it is insoluble in common solvents that limit its applications but its deacetylated product, named chitosan is found to be soluble in protonated aqueous medium and used widely in various biomedical fields. Indeed, the existence of the primary amino group on the backbone of chitosan provides it an important feature to modify it chemically into other derivatives easily. In the present review, we present the structural properties of chitin, and its derivatives and highlighted their biomedical implications including, tissue engineering, drug delivery, diagnosis, molecular imaging, antimicrobial activity, and wound healing. We further discussed the limitations and prospects of this versatile natural polysaccharide.

Chitosan-Gentamicin Conjugate Hydrogel Promoting Skin Scald Repair

Our earlier research indicated that chitosan-gentamicin conjugate (CS-GT) possesses superior antimicrobial activity and good water solubility. To develop CS-GT-based scald dressings, the antibacterial properties of CS-GT were further studied, and the biosafety of CS-GT and the healing mechanism of CS-GT hydrogel was systematically explored in this article. It was found that cell viability shows a declined inclination with the prolonged culture time and the increased concentration of CS-GT. After three day’s culture, the cell viability could still remain at 79.72% when CS-GT concentration was as high as 1000 μg/mL. On the other hand, the hemolysis rate of CS-GT was lower than 5% when its concentration is 800 μg/mL. Therefore CS-GT has good cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility. A wound-healing experiment has shown that the skin healing rate of CS-GT hydrogel was the highest at 99.61%, followed by the positive control (wet burn ointment) 94.98%, GT hydrogel 87.50%, and matrix 77.39%. The blank control group, however, possessed the lowest healing rate of 75.45%. Further analysis indicated that CS-GT hydrogel could promote the synthesis of total protein (TP) in skin granulation tissue, resulting in the enhanced hydroxyproline (HYP) content, which facilitated collagen fibrogenesis, reduced cytokine expression in an inflammatory response, and, ultimately, accelerated wound healing. To sum up, CS-GT hydrogel is a promising scald dressing.

Chemisorption and sustained release of cefotaxime between a layered double hydroxide and polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers for enhanced efficacy against second degree burn wound infection

Zn–Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesized by a chemical method, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers were fabricated by an electrospinning approach; we also synthesized Zn–Al LDH/cefotaxime (cefotax), Zn–Al LDH@PVA, and Zn–Al LDH/cefotax@PVA (LCP). Characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis techniques, dynamic light scattering, X ray-florescence, and carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN) analyses. The adsorption isotherm of cefotax and its entrapment percentage, release, and kinetics were also investigated. The results confirmed the elemental constituents of the mentioned formulas, which exhibited different degrees of crystallinity and different morphologies. Besides, these formulas were tested in vitro as antimicrobial agents and applied in vivo against second-degree wound burns induced in rats' skin. The adsorption of cefotax occurred chemically, and the experimental data were fitted with different isotherm models, where the Freundlich and Toth models gave the best fits. The entrapment percentage in LDH/cefotax was 77.41% and in LDH/cefotax@PVA, it was 67.83%. The sustained release of cefotax from LDH and LCP was attainable; the release percentages were 89.31% and 81.55% in up to 12 h, respectively. The release kinetics of cefotax from LDH fitted well with first-order kinetics, while that for LCP was parabolic. The formulas showed uneven antimicrobial effects against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria; the best effect was exhibited by Zn–Al LDH/cefotax@PVA due to its sustained release. Finally, investigating the possibility of using these formulas in the clinical setting should be considered.

This study succeeded to formulate, characterize, and investigate cefotax release and kinetics, and to compare cetofax with other known antibacterial agents.

Effects of ultrasonication duration and graphene oxide and nano-zinc oxide contents on the properties of polyvinyl alcohol nanocomposites

Nanofibrous composite membranes consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), graphene oxide (GO), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were prepared by and ultrasonic processing, and electrospinning. The performance of the membranes containing different GO-to-ZnO NP mass ratios was comprehensively investigated in terms of density, mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, optical property, biodegradability and antimicrobial properties. The results showed that an appropriate sonication time (30 min) improved the membrane performance; the composite nanofibrous membrane with a GO-to-ZnO NP mass ratio of 3:7 and 30 min sonication exhibited the best performance with a water vapor permeability of (0.62 ± 0.01) × 10^-2 g·h^-1 m^-2 pa^-1, and strain and stress values of 307.84 ± 2.96% and 12.82 ± 0.56 MPa, respectively. Particularly, the UV barrier property of the composite nanofibrous membrane was enhanced. Furthermore, the membrane exhibited strong antibacterial activity against foodborne pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. Thu, it can thus be used as an active food packaging material to ensure the safety of food products and to extend their shelf-life.

PEI-modified core-shell/bead-like amino silica enhanced poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan for diclofenac sodium efficient adsorption

Residual diclofenac sodium (DS) in water is a potential hazard. The electrostatic attraction between amino group of adsorbents and carboxyl group of DS under acidic conditions can effectively remove DS from water. Herein, a novel core-shell adsorbent of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/amino-grafted silica@polyethylenimine (PVA/CS/SAP@PEI) gel bead was prepared to efficiently uptake DS from wastewater. In this study, the gel bead was characterized using FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDS, and ¹³C NMR. The experimental data shows that there is a strong correlation between adsorption capacity. The adsorption data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model. The results of thermodynamics show that the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and increases entropy. The maximum adsorption capacity for DS was calculated as 493.81 mg/g at pH 5 (308 K). The adsorbent still exhibited excellent adsorption capacity after recycling five times, showing it has excellent potential for practical applications.

Wound healing potential of curcumin cross-linked chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol

This study focusses on antibacterial properties and wound healing potential of curcumin cross-linked with chitosan-PVA membranes. The crude curcumin was extracted from the rhizome of (Curcumin longa) and chitosan-PVA 80 was also prepared separately. The synergistic potential 10, 20 and 30 mg of curcumin alone and in combination with chitosan-PVA was determined. The antibacterial, scavenging potential of free radical, total phenolic and total flavonoids contents were documented through spectrophotometric methods. Finally, the wound healing potential was tested on experimental animal (rabbits). Rabbits were divided into different groups; untreated (control), treated with 10, 20 and 30 mg of curcumin and its combination with chitosan-PVA80. Chitosan-PVA exhibited significant antibacterial property against bacterial pathogens. Wound healing trials on 2nd degree burns showed chitosan as substantial wound healing agent for wound bandages. Results have shown that chitosan wound gauzes augmented the granule and fibrous connective tissues formation.
