Transformation of lignosulfonate into graphene-like 2D nanosheets: Self-assembly mechanism and their potential in biomedical and electrical applications

Sustainable synthesis of lignin-derived carbon dots with visible pH response for Fe3+ detection and bioimaging

Synthesis of lignin-based carbon dots (LCDs) with high quantum yield (QY), stable fluorescence properties and biocompatibility has been a challenge. Here, we propose an improved two-step strategy for producing high-quality LCDs from enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL). The p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid used in the strategy not only provides nitrogen and sulfur elements, but also tailors the disordered three-dimensional structure of EHL. The successful co-doping of N and S elements favors the reduction of the optical energy bandgap (Eg), resulting in a high QY of 45.05% for LCDs. The LCDs exhibited superior selectivity and sensitivity for Fe3+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.15 μM when Fe3+ concentration was 50-500 μM. In addition, LCDs demonstrated significant fluorescence in HepG2 cells and HepG2 cells loaded with LCDs at a concentration of 80 μg/mL showed good viability, suggesting that they are suitable for in vivo applications. The luminescent centers of LCDs change during pH regulation and thus show a special visual response to pH changes, making them have great potential for detecting metabolism in living cells. This work provides a novel and low-cost method for fabricating sustainable fluorescent probes for chemical sensing and bioimaging.

Tuning the Effect of Chitosan on the Electrochemical Responsiveness of Lignin Nanoparticles

Chitosan and lignin mixed nanoparticles were prepared by layer-by-layer and nanoprecipitation methodologies as responsive platforms for sustainable biosensors. The novel nanoparticles showed effective chemophysical and electrochemical properties dependent on the preparation methodology, molecular weight of chitosan, and type of lignin. HOMO-LUMO energy gap calculations suggested the presence of structure-activity relationships between the electrochemical responsiveness and the order and orientation of lignin aromatic subunits and chitosan chains in the nanodevices.

Nanogreen is the new future: the conversion of lignin and lignocellulosic wastes into nanomaterials

The lignocellulose biorefinery industry has assumed an important role within the current scenario. Lignin is an abundant and available biopolymer and one of the compounds present in the lignocellulosic waste. Therefore, processing lignin into new materials and nanomaterials, such as nanolignin, has attracted the attention of the scientific community. Lignin nanoparticles are materials that have excellent properties, such as biodegradability and non-toxicity, and have great potential as chelating agents, antimicrobials agents, UV protectors, nanofillers, adsorbents, catalysts, supercapacitors, emulsion stabilizers, delivered systems, drugs, and gene carriers. This review article covers the emergent scenario of nanolignin and the main aspects of scientific interest, such as the conversion and functionalization of lignin, the valorization of lignocellulose waste, and nanoparticle synthesis. A techno-economic evaluation of the biorefinery model of the nanolignin synthesis is presented based on the simulation of the process on the experimental and commercial databases available and reported by some authors. Finally, the techno-economic assessment is complemented by the life cycle assessment of various nanolignin synthesis pathways reported to evaluate the environmental implications and support this emergent technology development.

Fabrication of Hierarchical Lignin-Based Carbon through Direct High-Temperature Pyrolysis and Its Electrochemical Application

Green synthesis of lignin-based carbon materials can accelerate the development of energy storage and conversion in supercapacitors. In this work, hierarchical graphenelike carbon was prepared by alkali lignin (AL) pyrolysis at a high temperature of 1700 °C. Accompanied by metal salt catalysis and a nitrogen hybridization reaction, a unique nanostructure of graphitized ALC was obtained with both a well-ordered 2D sheet lamellar structure and a uniform bowl-like porous structure. ALC exhibited a graphenelike lattice structure, a BET specific surface area of 1190 m2·g-1, and excellent electrochemical performance (104 F·g-1/0.5 A·g-1). The study offers a prospective way to the high-value application of industrial lignin in supercapacitor electrode materials.

ZnO/SiO2 core/shell nanowires for capturing CpG rich single-stranded DNAs

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is capable of providing an ultrathin layer on high-aspect ratio structures with good conformality and tunable film properties. In this research, we modified the surface of ZnO nanowires through ALD for the fabrication of a ZnO/SiO2 (core/shell) nanowire microfluidic device which we utilized for the capture of CpG-rich single-stranded DNAs (ssDNA). Structural changes of the nanowires while varying the number of ALD cycles were evaluated by statistical analysis and their relationship with the capture efficiency was investigated. We hypothesized that finding the optimum number of ALD cycles would be crucial to ensure adequate coating for successful tuning to the desired surface properties, besides promoting a sufficient trapping region with optimal spacing size for capturing the ssDNAs as the biomolecules traverse through the dispersed nanowires. Using the optimal condition, we achieved high capture efficiency of ssDNAs (86.7%) which showed good potential to be further extended for the analysis of CpG sites in cancer-related genes. This finding is beneficial to the future design of core/shell nanowires for capturing ssDNAs in biomedical applications.

A novel way for high value-added application of lignosulfonate: Producing lignosulfonate nanosheets/graphene ultrathin film electrodes for electrochemical capacitors

In this paper, a novel way for high value-added application of lignosulfonate is presented. In this study, we use lignosulfonate nanosheets to fabricate a free-standing, binder-free, ultrathin and light-weight conductive film electrode via vacuum filtration method. The results show that LS is a promising candidate material for the preparation of electrochemical capacitor film electrode. It is worth mentioning that we use non-toxic, pollution-free aqueous solution (water) over organic solvents as the dispersion during the reductive graphene oxide (RGO) preparation process. The electrochemical measurements exhibit that the resistivity of lignosulfonate nanosheets/RGO (LNRGO) film electrode is 0.66 × 10^-3 kΩ cm^-1. The specific capacitance of the LNRGO film electrode is calculated to be 120 mF cm^-2 at the current density of 0.2 mA cm^-2, which is approximately 6.67 times larger than that of RGO-water film electrode.

Facile preparation of biomass lignin-based hydroxyethyl cellulose super-absorbent hydrogel for dye pollutant removal

The severe preparation process, poor swelling properties and mechanical properties of traditional cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogels heavily limited their practical applications. To solve these issues, we use long-chain hydroxyethyl celluloses (HECs) as framework backbones, short-chain PVAs as branched chains, lignin molecules as extended crosslinkers and epichlorohydrin molecules as crosslinkers to prepare the lignin-based hydroxyethyl cellulose-PVA (LCP) super-absorbent hydrogels in the alkaline aqueous solution under mild reaction conditions, demonstrating high swelling ratio of up to 1220 g/g. The LCP hydrogels could take up large amounts of positively charged dyes rhodamine 6G, crystal violet and methylene blue with uptakes of 153, 184 and 196 mg/g, respectively. The LCP super-absorbent hydrogels also present excellent water retention, biodegradability and excellent swelling properties, which are very promising for applications in the fields of commercial diapers, soil water retention and seed cultivation in agriculture, and dye pollutant removal.
