Preparation of pH-sensitive Fe3O4@C/carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan composite beads for diclofenac sodium delivery

Physicochemical, structural, and in-vitro release properties of carboxymethyl cellulose-based cryogel beads incorporating resveratrol-loaded microparticles for colon-targeted delivery system

The objective of this study was to investigate the physicochemical, structural, and in vitro release properties of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based cryogel beads incorporating resveratrol-loaded microparticles (MP) for colon-targeted delivery system. CMC-based cryogel beads were produced by ionic cross-linking with different concentrations (2%, 3%, and 4%) of AlCl3. Based on FE-SEM images, CMC-based cryogel beads showed a smoother surface and more compact internal structure with increasing AlCl3 concentrations, which was proven to be due to the new cross-linking between the -COO- group of CMC and Al3+ by FT-IR analysis. The encapsulation efficiency of the cryogel beads was significantly increased from 79.48% to 85.74% by elevating the concentrations of AlCl3 from 2% to 4%, respectively. In vitro release study showed that all CMC-based cryogel beads had higher stability for resveratrol than MP in simulated gastric conditions and can efficiently deliver resveratrol to colon without the premature release.

Effects of carboxymethyl cellulose fiber formations with chitosan incorporation via coating and mixing processes

To date, the utilization of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) fibers are only restricted to weak mechanical application such as wound dressing. Physically, CMC has a weak mechanical strength due to the high hydrophilicity trait. However, this flaw was saved by the extensive number of reactive functional groups, allowing this macromolecule to form linkages with chitosan to ensure its versatility. This work successfully fabricated CMC-chitosan fiber via dissolution, crosslinking, dry-jet wet-spinning extrusion, and coagulation processes. Chitosan was constituted with CMC fiber in two approaches, coating, and inclusion at various concentrations. Morphologically, chitosan incorporation has triggered agglomerations and roughness toward CMC fibers (CMCF). Chemically, the interaction between CMC and chitosan was proved through FTIR analysis at peaks 1245 cm-1 (ECH covalent crosslinking), while 3340 cm-1 and 1586 cm-1 were due to ionic and hydrogen bonding. The result from analysis showed that at higher chitosan concentrations, the chitosan-included CMC fiber (CMCF-I) and chitosan-coated CMC fiber (CMFC) were mechanically enhanced (up to 86.77 and 82.72 MPa), thermally more stable (33 % residual mass), and less hydrophilic compared to the plain CMCF. The properties of CMC-chitosan fibers have opened up vast possible applications, especially as a reinforcement in a watery medium such as a hydrogel.

Preparation and characterization of pH-sensitive chitosan/starch/MoS2 nanocomposite for control release of curcumin macromolecules drug delivery; application in the breast cancer treatment

In this work, chitosan (CS), Starch (S), and Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) were combined to create a nanocarrier that was utilized to treat breast cancer using the MCF-7 cell line. To analyze the features of the nanocarrier, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) tests were performed, respectively, to discover physical interactions and chemical bonding. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Dynamic light scattering (DLS), and zeta potential analyses were performed and reported to determine the structural characteristics and morphology of nanoparticles, size distribution, and surface charge of nanocarriers, respectively. The average size of the nanocomposite was measured at around 279 nm, and the surface charge of the nanocarrier was determined to be +86.31 mV. The entrapment and drug loading efficiency of nanocarriers were 87.25 % and 46.5 %, respectively, which is an acceptable value. The kinetics and release mode of the drug were investigated, and it was found that the synthesized nanocarrier was sensitive to pH and that its release was stable. The amount of the nanocarriers' toxicity and cell death were evaluated using MTT tests and flow cytometry, respectively. In the present study, the nanocarrier was wholly nontoxic and had anticancer properties against the MCF-7 cell line. This nanocarrier is very important due to its non-toxicity and sensitivity to pH and can be used in drug delivery and medical applications.

Recent advances in cellulose, pectin, carrageenan and alginate-based oral drug delivery systems

Polymers-based drug delivery systems constitute one of the highly explored thrust areas in the field of the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries. In the past years, the properties of polymers have been modified in context to their solubility, release kinetics, targeted action site, absorption, and therapeutic efficacy. Despite the availability of diverse synthetic polymers for the bioavailability enhancement of drugs, the use of natural polymers is still highly recommended due to their easy availability, accessibility, and non-toxicity. The aim of the review is to provide the available literature of the last five years on oral drug delivery systems based on four natural polymers i.e., cellulose, pectin, carrageenan, and alginate in a concise and tabulated manner. In this review, most of the information is in tabulated form to provide easy accessibility to the reader. The data related to active pharmaceutical ingredients and supported components in different formulations of the mentioned polymers have been made available.

The influence of pure (ligandless) magnetite nanoparticles functionalization on blood gases and electrolytes in acute blood loss

Objective was to compare the effect of functionalization of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) nanoparticles (NPs) with sodium chloride (NaCl), or its combination with ethylmethylhydroxypyrydine succinate (EMHPS) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on blood gases and electrolytes in acute blood loss. Ligandless magnetite NPs were synthesized by the electron beam technology and functionalized by mentioned agents. Size of NPs in colloidal solutions Fe₃O₄@NaCl, Fe₃O₄@NaCl@EMHPS, Fe₃O₄@NaCl@PVP, Fe₃O₄@NaCl@EMHPS@PVP (nanosystems 1-4) was determined by dynamic light scattering. In vivo experiments were performed on 27 Wistar rats. Acute blood loss was modeled by removal 25 % circulating blood. Nanosystems 1-4 were administered to animals intaperitoneally after the blood loss with followed determination of blood gases, pH and electrolytes. In blood loss, nanosystems Fe₃O₄@NaCl and Fe₃O₄@NaCl@PVP were able to improve the state of blood gases, pH, and the ratio of sodium/potassium in the blood. So, magnetite NPs with a certain surface modification can promote oxygen transport under hypoxic conditions.

Green synthesis of chitosan/polyacrylic acid/graphitic carbon nitride nanocarrier as a potential pH-sensitive system for curcumin delivery to MCF-7 breast cancer cells

A novel pH-sensitive nanocarrier containing chitosan (CS), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) was designed via water/oil/water (W/O/W) emulsification to administer curcumin (CUR) drug. g-C₃N₄ nanosheets with a high surface area and porous structure were produced via simple one-step pyrolysis process using thiourea as precursor, and incorporated into CS/PAA hydrogel. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to assess the crystalline structure of the nanocarrier and the interactions between its components, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed a spherical structure and confirmed the g-C₃N₄ impregnation into the CS/PAA matrix. Zeta potential and dynamic light scattering (DLS) provided information about the surface charge and average size distribution. High CUR loading and entrapment efficiencies were obtained, which were further improved upon addition of g-C₃N₄. The release kinetics of drug-loaded CS/PAA/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites were investigated at pH = 5.4 and pH = 7.4, and the results showed an excellent controlled pH-sensitive release profile. Cell apoptosis and in vitro cytotoxicity were investigated using flow cytometry and MTT analyses. CS/PAA/g-C₃N₄/CUR resulted in the highest rate of apoptosis in MCF-7 breast cancer cells, demonstrating the excellent nanocomposite efficacy in eliminating cancerous cells. CS/PAA hydrogel coated with g-C₃N₄ shows great potential for pH-sensitive controlled drug release.

pH-sensitive gallol-rich chitosan hydrogel beads for on-off controlled drug delivery

Malignant tumors have emerged as a serious health issue, and the interest in developing pH-sensitive polymers for site-specific drug delivery has increased. The physical and/or chemical properties of pH-sensitive polymers depend on the pH, and thus, drugs can be released by cleaving dynamic covalent and/or noncovalent bonds. In this study, gallic acid (GA) was conjugated to chitosan (CS) to prepare self-crosslinked hydrogel beads containing Schiff base (imine bond) crosslinks. The CS-GA hydrogel beads were formed by the dropwise addition of the CS-GA conjugate solution into a Tris-HCl buffer solution (TBS, pH 8.5). The pH-sensitivity of pristine CS was significantly enhanced following the introduction of GA moiety, and as a result, the CS-GA hydrogel beads swelled more than approximately 5000 % at pH 4.0, indicating an excellent swelling/deswelling ability of the beads at different pH (pH 4.0 and 8.5). The reversible breakage/recovery of the imine crosslinks in the CS-GA hydrogel beads was confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic and rheological studies. Finally, Rhodamine B was loaded onto the hydrogel beads as a model drug to investigate the pH-sensitive drug release behavior. At pH 4, the drug was released up to approximately 83 % within 12 h. The findings indicate that the CS-GA hydrogel beads have great potential as a drug delivery system that is sensitive to acidic tumor sites in the body.

Development of soy protein isolate/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose synbiotic microgels by double crosslinking with transglutaminase and aluminum chloride for delivery system of Lactobacillus acidophilus

This study was carried out to develop soy protein isolate (SPI)/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) synbiotic microgels by applying a double-crosslinking technique using transglutaminase and different concentrations of AlCl₃ (0, 6, 7, 8 %) and also by adding Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and pectic oligosaccharide. Synbiotic microgels crosslinked using 8 % AlCl₃ (SPI/NaCMC-Al³⁺₈ microgels) showed the highest encapsulation efficiency (92 %). The double-crosslinked microgels exhibited a smooth surface as proved by SEM. FT-IR, XRD, and DSC analyses showed the possible interaction within matrices and demonstrated the higher thermal stability of synbiotic microgels prepared using a higher concentration of AlCl₃. All in all, after exposure to simulated digestion fluid, heat treatment (72 °C, 15 s), and refrigerated storage, more cells in double-crosslinked microgels survived compared to single-crosslinked microgels. In particular, probiotic viability was highest in SPI/NaCMC-Al³⁺₈ microgels. These results indicate that the SPI/NaCMC-Al³⁺₈ microgels developed in this study can effectively protect L. acidophilus against the external environment.

Assessment of synthesized chitosan/halloysite nanocarrier modified by carbon nanotube for pH-sensitive delivery of curcumin to cancerous media

Constructing a system to carry medicine for more effective remedy of cancer has been a leading challenge, as the number of cancer cases continues to increase. In this present research, a curcumin-loaded chitosan/halloysite/carbon nanotube nanomixture was fabricated by means of water/oil/water emulsification method. The drug loading efficiency (DL) and entrapment efficiency (EE), as a result, reached 42 % and 88 %, respectively and FTIR and XRD analysis confirmed the bonding between the drug and nanocarrier. Morphological observation through FE-SEM and characterization through DLS analysis demonstrated that the average size of nanoparticles is 267.37 nm. Assessment of release within 96 h in pH 7.4 and 5.4 showed sustained release. For more investigation, release data was analyzed by diverse kinetic models to understand the mechanism in the release procedure. An MTT assay was also carried out, and the results illustrated apoptosis induction on MCF-7 cells and exhibited ameliorated cytotoxicity of the drug-loaded nanocomposite compared to the free curcumin. These findings suggest that the unique pH-responsive chitosan/halloysite/carbon nanotube nanocomposite might make a good option for drug delivery systems, particularly for the cancer treatment.

Synthesis and characterization of a novel, pH-responsive sustained release nanocarrier using polyethylene glycol, graphene oxide, and natural silk fibroin protein by a green nano emulsification method to enhance cancer treatment

In this study, for the first time, by employing a simple and efficient double nano-emulsification method and using sweet almond oil as the organic phase, polyethylene glycol (PEG)/graphene oxide (GO)/silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel-nanocomposite was synthesized. The aim of the research was to fabricate a biocompatible targeted pH-sensitive sustained release carrier, improve the drug loading capacity and enhance the anticancer effect of doxorubicin (DOX) drug. The obtained values for the entrapment (%EE) and loading efficacy (%LE) were 87.75 ± 0.7 % and 46 ± 1 %, respectively, and these high values were due to the use of GO with a large specific surface area and the electrostatic interaction between the drug and SF. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the presence of all the components in the nanocomposite and the suitable interaction between them. Based on the results of dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS) and zeta potential analysis, the mean size of the carrier particles and its surface charge were 293.7 nm and -102.9 mV, respectively. The high negative charge was caused by the presence of hydroxyl groups in GO and SF and it caused proper stability of the nanocomposite. The spherical core-shell structure with its homogeneous surface was also observed in the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) image. The cumulative release percentage of the nanocarrier reached 95.75 after 96 h and it is higher in the acidic environment at all times. The results of fitting the release data to the kinetic models suggested that the mechanism of release was dissolution-controlled anomalous at pH 7.4 and diffusion-controlled anomalous at pH 5.4. The results of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry showed an increase in toxicity on MCF-7 cells and improved apoptotic cell death compared to the free drug. Consequently, the findings of this research introduced and confirmed PEG/GO/SF nanocomposite as an attractive novel drug delivery system for pH-sensitive and sustained delivery of chemotherapeutic agents in biomedicine.

Development of chitosan/halloysite/graphitic‑carbon nitride nanovehicle for targeted delivery of quercetin to enhance its limitation in cancer therapy: An in vitro cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells

Although quercetin (QC) has valuable advantages, its low water solubility and poor permeability have limited its utilization as an anticancer drug. In this study, hydrogel nanocomposite of chitosan (CS), halloysite (HNT), and graphitic‑carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was prepared and loaded by QC using a water in oil in water emulsification process to attain QC sustained-release. Using g-C3N4 in the HNT/CS hydrogel solution enhanced the entrapment effectiveness (EE %) by up to 86 %. The interactions between QC and nanoparticles caused the nanocomposite pH-responsive behavior that assists in minimizing the side effect of the anticancer agent by controlling the burst release of QC at neutral conditions. According to DLS analysis, the size of the QC-loaded nanovehicle was 454.65 nm, showing that nanoparticles are highly monodispersed, which also was approved by FE-SEM. Additionally, Zeta potential value for the fabricated drug-loaded nanocarrier is +55.23 mV displaying that nanoparticles have good stability. The hydrogel nanocomposite structure's completeness was shown by FTIR pattern, and quercetin was included into the designed delivery system based on XRD data. Besides, the drug release profile indicated that a targeted sustained-release and pH-sensitive release of anticancer drug with the 96-hour extended-release were noticed. In order to comprehend the process of QC release at pH 5.4 and 7.4, four kinetic models were employed to find the best-suited model according to the acquired release data. Finally, the MTT experiment revealed considerable cytotoxicity against breast cancer cells, MCF-7 cell line was experimented in vitro, for the CS/HNT/g-C3N4 targeted delivery system in comparison to QC as a free drug. According to the above description, the CS/HNT/g-C3N4 delivery platform is a unique pH-sensitive drug delivery system for anticancer purposes that improves loading as well as sustained-release of quercetin.

Stability improvement of carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan complex beads by thermal treatment

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CHI) are two well-known natural polymer derivatives, as such the CMC@CHI complex beads fulfill many requirements for bio-related and safety-required applications. However, poor mechanical properties of CMC@CHI beads hinder their applications. We managed to improve the beads stability by a simple thermal treatment during the bead preparation. The effects of temperature, changing from 25 °C to 75 °C, on the stability of the formed beads were investigated. The morphology, diameter, shell thickness and structure of the beads treated at different temperature were analyzed using SEM, XPS and FTIR. The mechanical test and swelling experiments showed that the thermal treatment enhanced the bead's ability to withstand pressure and swelling. The beads treated at 75 °C showed the best pressure resistance, while the beads treated at 55 °C exhibited the highest swelling capability without losing integrity. This method is convenient to implement, not only improves the stability, but also controls the swelling capacity and mechanical properties of the beads, which are important for their potential applications in adsorption and controlled release. More importantly, this work offered insights on the effects of thermal treatment on the complexation process of the two polysaccharide molecular chains.

Mucoadhesive carriers for oral drug delivery

Among the various dosage forms, oral medicine has extensive benefits including ease of administration and patients' compliance, over injectable, suppositories, ocular and nasal. Despite of extensive demand and emerging advantages, over 50% of therapeutic molecules are not available in oral form due to their physicochemical properties. More importantly, most of the biologics, proteins, peptide, and large molecular drugs are mostly available in injectable form. Conventional oral drug delivery system has limitation such as degradation and lack of stability within stomach due to presence of highly acidic gastric fluid, hinders their therapeutic efficacy and demand more frequent and higher dosing. Hence, formulation for controlled, sustained, and targeted drug delivery, need to be designed with feasibility to target the specific region of gastrointestinal (GI) tract such as stomach, small intestine, intestine lymphatic, and colon is challenging. Among various oral delivery approaches, mucoadhesive vehicles are promising and has potential for improving oral drug retention and controlled absorption to treat local diseases within the GI tract, as well systemic diseases. This review provides the overview about the challenges and opportunities to design mucoadhesive formulation for oral delivery of therapeutics in a way to target the specific region of the GI tract. Finally, we have concluded with future perspective and potential of mucoadhesive formulations for oral local and systemic delivery.

Chitosan/Gamma-Alumina/Fe3O4@5-FU Nanostructures as Promising Nanocarriers: Physiochemical Characterization and Toxicity Activity

Today, cancer treatment is an important issue in the medical world due to the challenges and side effects of ongoing treatment procedures. Current methods can be replaced with targeted nano-drug delivery systems to overcome such side effects. In the present work, an intelligent nano-system consisting of Chitosan (Ch)/Gamma alumina (γAl)/Fe3O4 and 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) was synthesized and designed for the first time in order to influence the Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cell line in the treatment of breast cancer. Physico-chemical characterization of the nanocarriers was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analysis revealed smooth and homogeneous spherical nanoparticles. The high stability of the nanoparticles and their narrow size distribution was confirmed by DLS. The results of the loading study demonstrated that these nano-systems cause controlled, stable, and pH-sensitive release in cancerous environments with an inactive targeting mechanism. Finally, the results of MTT and flow cytometry tests indicated that this nano-system increased the rate of apoptosis induction on cancerous masses and could be an effective alternative to current treatments.

Multiple Roles of Chitosan in Mucosal Drug Delivery: An Updated Review

Chitosan (CS) is a linear polysaccharide obtained by the deacetylation of chitin, which, after cellulose, is the second biopolymer most abundant in nature, being the primary component of the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects. Since joining the pharmaceutical field, in the early 1990s, CS attracted great interest, which has constantly increased over the years, due to its several beneficial and favorable features, including large availability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-toxicity, simplicity of chemical modifications, mucoadhesion and permeation enhancer power, joined to its capability of forming films, hydrogels and micro- and nanoparticles. Moreover, its cationic character, which renders it unique among biodegradable polymers, is responsible for the ability of CS to strongly interact with different types of molecules and for its intrinsic antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and hemostatic activities. However, its pH-dependent solubility and susceptibility to ions presence may represent serious drawbacks and require suitable strategies to be overcome. Presently, CS and its derivatives are widely investigated for a great variety of pharmaceutical applications, particularly in drug delivery. Among the alternative routes to overcome the problems related to the classic oral drug administration, the mucosal route is becoming the favorite non-invasive delivery pathway. This review aims to provide an updated overview of the applications of CS and its derivatives in novel formulations intended for different methods of mucosal drug delivery.

Rational Fabrication of Folate-Conjugated Zein/Soy Lecithin/Carboxymethyl Chitosan Core-Shell Nanoparticles for Delivery of Docetaxel

The objective of this work is to design and fabricate a natural zein-based nanocomposite with core-shell structure for the delivery of anticancer drugs. As for the design, folate-conjugated zein (Fa-zein) was synthesized as the inner hydrophobic core; soy lecithin (SL) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) were selected as coating components to form an outer shell. As for fabrication, a novel and appropriate atomizing/antisolvent precipitation process was established. The results indicated that Fa-zein/SL/CMC core-shell nanoparticles (FZLC NPs) were successfully produced at a suitable mass ratio of Fa-zein/SL/CMC (100:30:10) and the freeze-dried FZLC powder showed a perfect redispersibility and stability in water. After that, docetaxel (DTX) as a model drug was encapsulated into FZLC NPs at different mass ratios of DTX to FZLC (MR). When MR = 1:15, DTX/FZLC NPs were obtained with high encapsulation efficiency (79.22 ± 0.37%), small particle size (206.9 ± 48.73 nm), and high zeta potential (-41.8 ± 3.97 mV). DTX was dispersed in the inner core of the FZLC matrix in an amorphous state. The results proved that DTX/FZLC NPs could increase the DTX dissolution, sustain the DTX release, and enhance the DTX cytotoxicity significantly. The present study provides insight into the formation of zein-based complex nanocarriers for the delivery of anticancer drugs.

The chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose/montmorillonite scaffolds incorporated with epigallocatechin-3-gallate-loaded chitosan microspheres for promoting osteogenesis of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a plant-derived flavonoid compound with the ability to promote the differentiation of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into osteoblasts. However, the effect of EGCG on the osteogenic differentiation of the human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSCs) is rarely studied. Therefore, in this study, the osteogenic effects of EGCG are studied in the HUMSCs by detecting cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition and the expression of relevant osteogenic markers. The results showed that EGCG can promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of the HUMSCs in vitro at a concentration of 2.5-5.0 μM. Unfortunately, the EGCG is easily metabolized by cells during cell culture, which reduces its bioavailability. Therefore, in this paper, EGCG-loaded microspheres (ECM) were prepared and embedded in chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose/montmorillonite (CS/CMC/MMT) scaffolds to form CS/CMC/MMT-ECM scaffolds for improving the bioavailability of EGCG. The HUMSCs were cultured on CS/CMC/MMT-ECM scaffolds to induce osteogenic differentiation. The results showed that the CS/CMC/MMT-ECM scaffold continuously released EGCG for up to 22 days. In addition, CS/CMC/MMT-ECM scaffolds can promote osteoblast differentiation. Taken together, the present study suggested that entrainment of ECM into CS/CMC/MMT scaffolds was a prospective scheme for promotion osteogenic differentiation of the HUMSCs.

Novel reusable amine-functionalized cellulose acetate beads impregnated aminated graphene oxide for adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium ions

In this study, a multi-featured adsorbent was developed for the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) ions. Herein, aminated graphene oxide (GO-NH₂) was firstly synthetized and incorporated into cellulose acetate beads (CA) which were followed by surface amine-functionalization process. Varies characterization tools such as FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TGA, XRD, BET, XPS and zeta potential were employed to ensure the successful fabrication of GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ composite beads. An enhancement in the adsorption performance was attained, while the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within only 60 min. Therefore, the adsorption capacity was boosted with increasing GO-NH₂ ratio in the beads matrix from 10 to 25%. Furthermore, the adsorption process agreed with Freundlich isotherm model with a supreme adsorption capacity of 410.21 mg/g at pH 2, while data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Besides, thermodynamic studies denoted that the adsorption process was endothermic, randomness and spontaneous. The composite beads retained better adsorption characteristics for seven sequential cycles with ease of separation. The proposed adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ onto GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ surface occurred via the electrostatic interactions, reduction process and coordinate-covalent bonds. These findings hypothesize that the fabricated GO-NH₂@CA-NH₂ beads could be act as easy-separable and reusable adsorbent for efficient adsorption of Cr⁶⁺ ions.

Comparative Drug Release Investigations for Diclofenac Sodium Drug (DS) by Chitosan-Based Grafted and Crosslinked Copolymers

The hydrogels responding to pH synthesized by graft copolymerization only and then concurrent grafting and crosslinking of monomer N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAM) and binary comonomers acrylamide, acrylic acid and acrylonitrile (AAm, AA and AN) onto chitosan support were explored for the percent upload and release study for anti-inflammatory diclofenac sodium drug (DS), w.r.t. time and pH. Diclofenac sodium DS was seized in polymeric matrices by the equilibration process. The crosslinked-graft copolymers showed the highest percent uptake than graft copolymers (without crosslinker) and chitosan itself. The sustainable release of the loaded drug was studied with respect to time at pH 2.2, 7.0, 7.4 and 9.4. Among graft copolymers (without crosslinking), Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AA) and Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AN) exhibited worthy results for sustainable drug deliverance, whereas Crosslink-Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AA) and Crosslink-Chit-g-polymer (NIPAAM-co-AAm) presented the best results for controlled/sustained release of diclofenac sodium DS with 93.86 % and 96.30 % percent release, respectively, in 6 h contact time. Therefore, the grafted and the crosslinked graft copolymers of the chitosan showed excellent delivery devices for the DS with sustainable/prolonged release in response to pH. Drug release kinetics was studied using Fick’s law. The kinetic study revealed that polymeric matrices showed the value of n as n > 1.0, hence drug release took place by non-Fickian diffusion. Hence, the present novel findings showed the multidirectional drug release rate. The morphological changes due to interwoven network structure of the crosslinked are evident by the Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

Metal nanoparticles supported chitosan coated carboxymethyl cellulose beads as a catalyst for the selective removal of 4-nitrophenol

In the area of water pollution treatment, the coupling of biopolymers with metal/metal nanoparticles is getting a lot of interest these days. Herein, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) beads and chitosan (Cs) coated CMC beads were employed as a support for copper nanoparticles, (Cu/CMC) and (Cu/Cs@CMC), respectively. Following that, a reducing agent (NaBH₄) was used to convert Cu/CMC and Cu/Cs@CMC beads to zero valent. The developed beads were employed for catalytic reductions of nitrophenol, dyes, and potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) in their mixed solution with NaBH₄. Cu/Cs@CMC beads were more efficient compared to Cu/CMC beads toward selected pollutants. The reduction rate constants of 4-NP, MO, EY and K₃[Fe(CN)₆] by utilizing Cu/Cs@CMC were 3.8 × 10^-1, 4.0 × 10^-1, 1.4 × 10^-1 and 4.48 × 10^-1 min^-1, respectively. Further, the catalytic activity of the Cu/Cs@CMC beads were optimized using 4-NP as a model compound for this study. Cu/Cs@CMC beads were able to use up to three cycles compared to Cu/CMC beads without losing catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-NP, according to the recyclability and reusability study of both beads. The chitosan coating beads Cu/Cs@CMC was simply prepared and have good catalytic activity, recyclable, and more efficient than Cu/CMC beads due to their high strength and stability.

Preparation of amino-modified cellulose aerogels and adsorption on typical diclofenac sodium contaminant

A new functional cellulose aerogel (Cell@PEI) with high adsorption efficiency was prepared for the removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) by ammonification cross-linked polyethyleneimine (PEI) with the surface of cellulose. The fabricated Cell@PEI adsorbent was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. The results demonstrated that the Cell@PEI exhibited a distinct three-dimensional cell structure and was rich in functional groups, i.e., -OH, C = O, -NH₂, and C = C. The Cell@PEI presented a stable crystal structure and large specific surface area (241.41 m²·g^-1), which was approximately 42 times as much as bare cellulose aerogel (5.82 m²·g^-1). In addition, a series of adsorption experiments showed that the adsorbent had good adsorption performance for DCF with a maximum adsorption capacity of 294.12 mg·g^-1. Furthermore, the adsorption of DCF on Cell@PEI was well corresponded with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order adsorption model. Thermodynamic study proved that adsorption was a spontaneous exothermic reaction. Moreover, the introduction of PEI into Cell@PEI aerogel enhanced the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, promoting DCF adsorption. Importantly, the Cell@PEI aerogel could be reused up to five times desorbed by NaOH (0.5 mol/L). Considering the above results, the fabricated aerogel material can be applied to remove organic pollutants.

Cytocompatible drug delivery hydrogels based on carboxymethylagarose/chitosan pH-responsive polyelectrolyte complexes

Several drugs are chemically unstable in the gastric environment and have low bioavailability restricted by intestinal absorption, which motivates the development of alternative routes for drug release, such as transdermal drug carriers for drug delivery to specific areas of the skin. Herein, novel polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) consisting of carboxymethylagarose (CMA) and chitosan (CS) were prepared. pH-responsive CMA/CS hydrogels were obtained by mixing CMA and CS at various weight ratios. Swelling ratio was modulated by varying the CMA and CS weight ratio, and the highest swelling values were achieved for 2:1 wt% hydrogels at 25 °C and pH 6.0. PEC films were characterized by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and SEM. Results indicated that CMA and CS were successfully crosslinked by ionic complexation. As a model drug, diclofenac sodium (DS) was loaded in CMA/CS PECs. Association efficiency and loading capacity were ca. 69% and 79%, respectively, exhibiting 67% cumulative release after 72 h at 37 °C and pH 6.0 through Fickian diffusion mechanism. Viability assay of immortalized human keratinocyte (HaCat) cells showed ca. 100% survival in the presence of hydrogels and DS. Therefore, this work suggests that CMA/CS PECs can be applied as pH-responsive carriers for dermal drug delivery.

Cellulose Amphiphilic Materials: Chemistry, Process and Applications

In the last decade, amphiphilic cellulose (AC) is emerging as attractive biomaterial for different therapeutic use, due to its unique chemical and physical properties. Using it as alternative to synthetic polymers, AC opens up new avenues to prepare new bio-sustainable materials with low impact in the cellular environment. Herein, most recent methods to synthesize and processing AC materials from different sources—i.e., cellulose nanofibers, bacterial cellulose, cellulose derivatives—will be discussed. By an accurate optimization of morphology and surface chemistry, it is possible to develop innovative amphiphilic platforms, promising for a wide range of biomedical applications, from drug delivery to molecular/particle adsorption.

One-Step Fabrication of Hollow Spherical Cellulose Beads: Application in pH-Responsive Therapeutic Delivery

The path to greater sustainability and the development of polymeric drug delivery systems requires innovative approaches. The adaptation and use of biobased materials for applications such as targeted therapeutic delivery is, therefore, in high demand. A crucial part of this relates to the development of porous and hollow structures that are biocompatible, pH-responsive, deliver active substances, and contribute to pain relief, wound healing, tissue regeneration, and so forth. In this study, we developed a facile single-step and water-based method for the fabrication of hollow spherical cellulose beads for targeted drug release in response to external pH stimuli. Through base-catalyzed deprotection, hydrophobic solid and spherical cellulose acetate beads are transformed into hydrophilic cellulose structures with a hollow interior (wall thickness: 150 μm and inner diameter: 650 μm) by a stepwise increment of temperature and treatment time. Besides the pH-responsive fluid uptake properties, the hollow cellulose structures exhibit a maximum encapsulation efficiency of 20-85% diclofenac (DCF), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, used commonly to treat pain and inflammatory diseases. The maximum amount of DCF released in vitro increased from 20 to 100% when the pH of the release medium increased from pH 1.2 to 7.4. As for the DCF release patterns and kinetic models at specific pH values, the release showed a diffusion- and swelling-controlled profile, effortlessly fine-tuned by external environmental pH stimuli. Overall, we show that the modified beads exhibit excellent characteristics for transport across the gastrointestinal tract and enhance the bioavailability of the drug. Their therapeutic efficacy and biocompatibility are also evident from the studies on human fibroblast cells. We anticipate that this platform could support and inspire the development of novel sustainable and effective polysaccharide-based delivery systems.

Theranostic Platforms Based on Silica and Magnetic Nanoparticles Containing Quinacrine, Chitosan, Fluorophores, and Quantum Dots

In this paper, we describe the synthesis of multilayer nanoparticles as a platform for the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic injuries. The platform is based on magnetite (MNP) and silica (SNP) nanoparticles, while quinacrine is used as an anti-ischemic agent. The synthesis includes the surface modification of nanoparticles with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPMS), the immobilization of quinacrine, and the formation of a chitosan coating, which is used to fix the fluorophore indocyanine green (ICG) and colloidal quantum dots AgInS₂/ZnS (CQDs), which serve as secondary radiation sources. The potential theranostic platform was studied in laboratory animals.

Recent advancements in synthesis and drug delivery utilization of polysaccharides-based nanocomposites: The important role of nanoparticles and layered double hydroxides

Drug delivery systems are explained as methods to deliver a specific drug to desired organs, tissues, and cells for drug release to diseases treatment. Recently, considerable development has been interested in stimuli-responsive nano-systems, which respond to the essential pathological and physicochemical issues in diseased sites. During the last decades, researchers in the world presented, investigated, and implemented novel different nanomaterials with a focus on developing drug delivery. Polysaccharides including chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, gums, and cellulose, as natural bio-materials, are suitable candidates for designing and formulations of these nano-systems because of the outstanding merits such as bio-compatibility, bio-degradability, non-toxicity, and gelling characteristics. On the other side, nanoparticles including metals (Au, Ag), metal oxides (Fe₃O₄, ZnO, CuO), or non-metal oxides (SiO₂) and also, layered double hydroxides nanostructures have appealed significant consideration in the fields of biomedical therapeutics and cancer therapy owing to the bio-compatibility, great surface area, good chemical and mechanical features, and also proper magnetic characteristics. This comprehensive review provides an overview of current advancements in drug delivery strategies, and manufacturing methods using chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid, gums, and also, metals, metal oxides, non-metal oxides, and LDHs for delivery system uses.

Synthesis and characterization of chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone coated nanoporous γ-Alumina as a pH-sensitive carrier for controlled release of quercetin

pH-sensitive drug delivery systems based on amphiphilic copolymers constitute a promising strategy to overcome some challenges to cancer treatment. In the present study, quercetin-loaded chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone/γ-Alumina nanocomposite was fabricated through a double oil in water emulsification method for the first time. γ-Alumina was incorporated to improve the drug loading efficiency and release behavior of polyvinylpyrrolidone and chitosan copolymeric hydrogel. γ-Alumina nanoparticles were obtained by the sol-gel method with a nanoporous structure, high surface area, and hydroxyl-rich surface. Quercetin, a natural anticancer agent, was loaded into the nanocomposite as a drug model. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed the crystalline properties and chemical bonding of the prepared nanocomposite. The size of drug-loaded nanocomposites was 141 nm with monodisperse particle distribution, having a spherical shape approved by DLS analysis and FE-SEM, respectively. Incorporating γ-Alumina nanoparticles improved the encapsulation efficiency up to 95%. Besides, swelling study and the quercetin release profile demonstrated that γ-Alumina ameliorated pH sensitivity of nanocomposite and a targeted controlled release was obtained. Various release kinetic models were applied to the experimental release data to study the mechanism of drug release. Through MTT assay and flow cytometry, the quercetin-loaded nanocomposite showed significant cytotoxicity on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Also, the enhanced apoptotic cell death confirmed the anticancer activity of γ-Alumina. These results suggest that the chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone/γ-Alumina nanocomposite is a novel pH-sensitive drug delivery system for anticancer applications.

Sustained release of epigallocatechin-3-gallate from chitosan-based scaffolds to promote osteogenesis of mesenchymal stem cell

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a kind of flavonoids and has the ability to promote differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into osteoblasts. However, the EGCG is easily metabolized by cells during cell culture, which reduces its bioavailability. Therefore, in this paper, EGCG-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ECN) were fabricated and entrapped into chitosan/alginate (CS/Alg) scaffolds to form CS/Alg-ECN scaffolds for improving the bioavailability of EGCG. The human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSCs) were cultured on CS/Alg-ECN scaffolds to induce osteogenic differentiation. The results indicated that the CS/Alg-ECN scaffolds continuously released EGCG for up to 16 days. Besides, these results suggested that CS/Alg-ECN scaffolds promoted osteoblast differentiation through activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Collectively, this study demonstrated that the entrapment ECN into CS/Alg scaffolds was a promising strategy for promoting osteogenesis of MSCs.

Preparation of pH-sensitive chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone/α-Fe2O3 nanocomposite for drug delivery application: Emphasis on ameliorating restrictions

Chitosan (CS)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) nanocomposites loaded with Doxorubicin (drug model) were synthesized via an oil-in-water emulsification method to develop a biocompatible and pH-sensitive drug nanocarrier for the first time. A hydrogel, including CS, PVP, and α-Fe₂O₃, was fabricated successfully with glutaraldehyde (GA) as the cross-linker. Incorporating α-Fe₂O₃ into CS/PVP hydrogel improved the pH-sensitivity and developed beneficial hydrogel. FTIR and XRD analysis illustrated physical interactions between polymer-polymer, polymer-drug, and crystalline behavior of prepared nanocomposite. These analyses also confirmed chemical bonding in nanocomposite's structure. The FE-SEM analysis showed successful impregnation of α-Fe₂O₃ into CS/PVP matrix and spherical structure. To clarify the size distribution and surface charge of the drug-loaded nanocomposite (CS/PVP/α-Fe₂O₃/Dox), DLS and zeta analyses were conducted. They showed the mean size of nanocomposites at about 247 nm. Drug-loaded CS/PVP/α-Fe₂O₃ nanocomposite and CS/PVP/Dox were studied for their release behavior and kinetics. Furthermore, the effect of α-Fe₂O₃ on release from CS/PVP/α-Fe₂O₃/Dox nanocomposite was investigated. That showed an increase in encapsulation of Doxorubicin and beneficial release behavior such as slow-release and retention effect. The release from this drug-loaded nanocomposite revealed excellent pH-sensitive and controlled release of the drug. Besides, the in vitro cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis were studied to recognize biological properties. These analyses revealed that drug-loaded nanocomposite caused high inhibition to MCF-7 cells in presence of α-Fe₂O₃ and proved the hematite's anti-cancer effect. By and large, this study confirmed CS/PVP/α-Fe₂O₃ nanocomposites as a potential candidate for the controlled pH-sensitive release of the drug.

Preparation of aerogel beads and microspheres based on chitosan and cellulose for drug delivery: A review

Spherical aerogels are not easily broken during use and are easier to transport and store which can be used as templates for drug delivery. This review summarizes the possible approaches for the preparation of aerogel beads and microspheres based on chitosan and cellulose, an overview to the methods of manufacturing droplets is presented, afterwards, the transition mechanisms from sol to a spherical gel are reviewed in detail followed by different drying processes to obtain spherical aerogels with porous structures. Additionally, a specific focus is given to aerogel beads and microspheres to be regarded as drug delivery carriers. Furthermore, a core/shell architecture of aerogel beads and microspheres for controlled drug release is described and subjected to inspire readers to create novel drug release system. Finally, the conclusions and outlooks of aerogel beads and microspheres for drug delivery are summarized.

Connecting the dots in drug delivery: A tour d'horizon of chitosan-based nanocarriers system

One of the most promising pharmaceutical research areas is developing advanced delivery systems for controlled and sustained drug release. The drug delivery system (DDS) can be designed to strengthen the pharmacological and therapeutic characteristics of different medicines. Natural polymers have resolved numerous commencing hurdles, which hindered the clinical implementation of traditional DDS. The naturally derived polymers furnish various advantages such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, inexpensiveness, easy availability, and biologically identifiable moieties, which endorse cellular activity in contrast to synthetic polymers. Among them, chitosan has recently been in the spotlight for devising safe and efficient DDSs due to its superior properties such as minimal toxicity, bio-adhesion, stability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The primary amino group in chitosan shows exceptional qualities such as the rate of drug release, anti-microbial properties, the ability to cross-link with various polymers, and macrophage activation. This review intends to provide a glimpse into different practical utilization of chitosan as a drug carrier. The first segment of the review will give cognizance into the source of extraction and chitosan's remarkable properties. Further, we have endeavored to provide recent literature pertaining to chitosan applications in various drug delivery systems via different administration routes along with current patented chitosan formulations.

Preparation and optimization of chitosan nanoparticles from discarded squilla (Carinosquilla multicarinata) shells for the delivery of anti-inflammatory drug: Diclofenac

Biological waste from marine sources is discarded into various water bodies which leads to dramatic increase in the water pollution near coastal areas. This animal waste consists of bioactive compounds such as fatty acids, amino acids, and chitin which can be used in agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors. The aim of the current study was to extract chitosan (CS) from the discarded shells of Carinosquilla multicarinata and prepare anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac potassium (DP) encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles (DP-CSNPs). The CS was extracted, purified and physicochemical and morphological properties were characterized such as viscosity (1.44cPs), molecular weight (~57 kDa), degree of deacetylation (83%). The DP-CSNPs were prepared by ionic gelation of extracted chitosan with tripolyphosphate (TPP) anions by varying chitosan, TPP, and drug concentrations. SEM imaging showed that DP-CSNPs were nano-sized (248 nm) along with small, spherical, and uniformity in shape. The endothermic peak appeared at 180°C while performing the thermal analysis of DP-CSNPs by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were determined for all combinations while maximum EE (79.42%), LC (42.08%), and +0.00459 mV for Zeta potential were found for nanoparticles synthesized from CS with 2.5mg/mL concentration and 1mg/mL of TPP and drug concentrations. Moreover, in vitro drug release study was performed at simulated biological fluid (pH 7.4) and at 10th hr maximum (80%) of the drug was released from DP-CSNPs. Therefore, this waste source would be a better model system for the drug release. Implications: Dumping of marine waste into deep ocean has led to dramatic increase in water pollution leading to the endangerment of various oceanic animals. This discarded waste can be used sustainably for the isolation of various biopolymers into the ultimate use for human community. The work provides a detailed guide into the method of extraction of low molecular weight chitosan and preparation of nanoparticles for the delivery of anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac.

Recent Advances in Magnetite Nanoparticle Functionalization for Nanomedicine

Functionalization of nanomaterials can enhance and modulate their properties and behaviour, enabling characteristics suitable for medical applications. Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles are one of the most popular types of nanomaterials used in this field, and many technologies being already translated in clinical practice. This article makes a summary of the surface modification and functionalization approaches presented lately in the scientific literature for improving or modulating magnetite nanoparticles for their applications in nanomedicine.

Fabrication of Ion-Crosslinking Aminochitosan Nanoparticles for Encapsulation and Slow Release of Curcumin

Curcumin (Cur) has anticancer activities but has poor stability, which can be improved using carrier materials. In this study, chitosan was aminated to increase the number of amino groups on its surface, modified with folic acid (FA), and then made into nanoparticles by ionic crosslinking. Owing to ion interaction, the negatively charged, non-toxic tripolyphosphate (TPP) interacted with the positively charged amino group on the aminated chitosan (AmCS) surface, producing FA-AmCS-TPP nanoparticles, which were then characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their small particle size (175.2 ± 0.99 nm) and good surface positive potential (+42.4 mV) are beneficial for carrying antitumor drugs. We subsequently investigated whether coating of Cur by AmCS allows slow drug release by FA-AmCS-TPP nanoparticles in different pH environments, and estimated the Cur loading efficiency (EE-Cur). Our results showed that the cumulative release rate of Cur at 48 h was 56.2%, and that the EE-Cur reached 94.26 ± 0.91% with nanoparticles composed of 0.10 g AmCS, 10.0 mg FA, 10.0 mg TPP, and 15.0 mg Cur. Additionally, cytotoxicity experiments showed that the Cur/FA-AmCS-TPP nanoparticles had good targeting ability for tumor cells. Therefore, the non-toxic targeted composite nanoparticles had potential as a new antitumor agent that can overcome the limitations of Cur.

Micelles modified with a chitosan-derived homing peptide for targeted intracellular delivery of ginsenoside compound K to liver cancer cells

Ginsenoside compound K (CK), a major metabolite of protopanaxadiol ginsenosides, exhibits significant anticancer activities against various cancer cells. However, CK has poor water solubility and low bioavailability, which have limited its application. In this study, A54 peptide was utilized to fabricate CK-loaded micelles (APD-CK) for liver targeting, using deoxycholic acid-O-carboxymethyl chitosan as the vehicle. The average particle size of APD-CK micelles was about 171.4 nm by dynamic light scattering in the hydrated state and their morphology were spherical with good dispersion. An in vitro release assay indicated pH-responsive and sustained release behavior through a mechanism of non-Fickian diffusion. Moreover, the in vitro cytotoxicity of the APD-CK micelles against HepG2 and Huh-7 cells was significantly stronger than that of CK up to 20 μg/mL. Enhanced cellular uptake of micelles in both cell types was established using confocal fluorescence scanning microscopy and flow cytometry. In addition, western blot analysis revealed that APD-CK micelles could promote the protein expression levels of caspase-3, caspase-9, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase. Therefore, APD-CK micelles are a potential vehicle for delivering hydrophobic drugs in liver cancer therapy, enhancing drug targeting and anticancer activity.

Fabrication of cross-linked chitosan beads grafted by polyethylenimine for efficient adsorption of diclofenac sodium from water

Diclofenac sodium (DS) is an emerging contaminant that is toxic and remains at high concentrations in natural aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to fabricate a novel spherical polymeric adsorbent composed of cross-linked chitosan beads grafted by polyethylenimine (PEI) to remove DS from water. The adsorbents were thoroughly characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyses, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A cross-linking step was expected to enhance adsorption. The experimental data obtained from a series of adsorption experiments were fit well by the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. The epichlorohydrin-PEI adsorbent (EPCS@PEI) showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 253.32 mg/g and removal efficiency of nearly 100% for the DS in the initial 50 mg/L solution. Therefore, EPCS@PEI is proposed as a potential adsorbent for DS removal, where these initial findings are expected to promote further design and fabrication of effective adsorbents for practical applications.

PEI-modified core-shell/bead-like amino silica enhanced poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan for diclofenac sodium efficient adsorption

Residual diclofenac sodium (DS) in water is a potential hazard. The electrostatic attraction between amino group of adsorbents and carboxyl group of DS under acidic conditions can effectively remove DS from water. Herein, a novel core-shell adsorbent of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/amino-grafted silica@polyethylenimine (PVA/CS/SAP@PEI) gel bead was prepared to efficiently uptake DS from wastewater. In this study, the gel bead was characterized using FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDS, and ¹³C NMR. The experimental data shows that there is a strong correlation between adsorption capacity. The adsorption data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model. The results of thermodynamics show that the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and increases entropy. The maximum adsorption capacity for DS was calculated as 493.81 mg/g at pH 5 (308 K). The adsorbent still exhibited excellent adsorption capacity after recycling five times, showing it has excellent potential for practical applications.
