An approach for in situ qualitative and quantitative analysis of moisture adsorption in nanogram-scaled lignin by using micro-FTIR spectroscopy and partial least squares regression

Surface Modification of Kraft Lignin by Mechanochemical Processing with Sodium Percarbonate

In this article, we present a novel one-pot mechanochemical reaction for the surface activation of lignin. The process involves environmentally friendly oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, depolymerization of fractions with high molecular mass, and introduction of new carbonyl functions into the lignin backbone. Kraft lignin was ground with sodium percarbonate and sodium hydroxide in a ball mill at different time intervals. Analyses by infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), size exclusion chromatography (SEC), dynamic vapor sorption (DVS), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) showed significant improvements. After only 5 min of reaction, there was a 47% reduction in mass-average molecular weight and an increase in carboxyl functionalities. Chemical activation resulted in an approximately 2.8-fold increase in water adsorption. Principal component analysis (PCA) provided further insight into the correlations between IR spectra and SAXS parameters.

Efficiency evaluation of titanium oxide nanocomposite membrane in adsorption of chromium from oil effluents

Reverse osmosis and nanofiltration (NF) are the essential physical separation technologies used to remove contaminants from liquid streams. A hybrid of nanofiltration and forward osmosis (FO) was used to increase the removal efficiency of heavy metals in synthesized oil effluents. Thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were synthesized by applying surface polymerization on a polysulfone substrate to use in the forward osmosis process. The impact of different membrane fabrication conditions such as time, temperature, and pressure on effluent flux, the effect of different concentrations of the heavy metal solution on adsorption rate and sedimentation rate, the impact of TiO₂ nanoparticles on the performance and structure of forward osmosis membranes were investigated. The morphology, composition, and properties of TiO₂ nanocomposites made by the infrared spectrometer and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were studied. Kinetic modeling and Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tamkin relationships were used to draw adsorption isotherms and evaluate adsorption equilibrium data. The results indicated that pressure and temperature directly affect water outlet flux, and time affects it indirectly. Evaluating the isothermal relationships revealed that chromium adsorption from the TFN 0.05 ppm membrane and thin-film composite (TFC) membrane follows the Langmuir model with correlation coefficients of 0.996 and 0.995, respectively. The significant removal of heavy metals and the acceptable amount of water flux demonstrated the appropriate potential of the titanium oxide nanocomposite membrane, which can be used as an effective adsorbent to remove chromium from aqueous solutions.

Impact of acetylation process of kraft lignin in development of environment-friendly semisolid lubricants

The aim of this work was to study the influence of the acetylation process of kraft lignin on developing dispersions potentially applicable as new bio-based semisolid lubricants. Lignin was functionalized with acetic anhydride and pyridine as a catalyst by modifying different reaction variables (temperature, ratio of pyridine/acetic anhydride and time). Acetylated lignin was analyzed using FTIR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR techniques, TGA, DSC and SEM to evaluate the chemical, morphological and thermal changes induced by the acetylation process. The influence of the acetylation process on the rheological and tribological properties of dispersions was related to the development of different microstructures, which depend on chemical and morphological properties of acetylated lignin. In this sense, two different rheological behaviours (gel-like or fluid-like) were found to depend on the reaction time. From the experimental results obtained, it can be concluded that the acetylation process is a key issue to modulate rheological and morphological properties of dispersions, resulting in an effective method to improve the compatibility of lignin and castor oil. Acetylated lignin with medium degrees of substitution with adequate morphological properties can be potentially used as an effective thickening agent to develop semisolid lubricants.

One-Step Lignin Refining Process: The Influence of the Solvent Nature on the Properties and Quality of Fractions

Heterogeneity of kraft lignin is one of the main limitations for the development of high-performance applications. Therefore, refining lignin using organic solvents is a promising strategy to obtain homogenous fractions with controlled quality in terms of structure and properties. In this work, one-step refining processes for hardwood kraft lignin using nine organic solvents of different chemical nature and polarity were carried out with the aim of investigating and understanding the effect of the type of organic solvent on the quality of resulting fractions. Structural features of both soluble and insoluble lignin fractions were assessed by GPC, Py-GC-MS, and FTIR linked to PCA analysis. Moreover, functional properties such as physical appearance, hygroscopicity, antioxidant capacity, and thermal properties were evaluated. The results evidenced the relationship between the nature and polarity of the solvents and the properties of the obtained soluble and insoluble fractions.

Microscopy and Spectroscopy Techniques for Characterization of Polymeric Membranes

Polymeric membrane is a proven technology for water purification and wastewater treatment. The membrane is also commercialized for gas separation, mainly for carbon dioxide removal and hydrogen recovery. Characterization techniques are excellent tools for exploring the membrane structure and the chemical properties. This information can be then optimized to improve the membrane for better performance. In this paper, characterization techniques for studying the physical structure such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are discussed. Techniques for investigating the crystal structure such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) are also considered. Other tools for determining the functional groups such Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are reviewed. Methods for determining the elemental composition such as energy-dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray fluorescent (XRF), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are explored. The paper also gives general guidelines for sample preparation and data interpretation for each characterization technique.
