Smart and functional polyelectrolyte complex hydrogel composed of salecan and chitosan lactate as superadsorbent for decontamination of nickel ions

Microwave promoted graft copolymerization of poly(ethylacrylate) onto k-carrageenan for removal of Cd and Ni from aqueous solution

Microwave promoted graft copolymerization of poly (ethyl acrylate) onto kappa-carrageenan in presence of a redox pair (ascorbic acid and potassium persulfate) led to the formation of a novel copolymer hydrogel, kappa-carrageenan-graft-poly (ethylacrylate). By varying the reaction conditions such as the microwave power, reaction time, concentration of kappa-carrageenan, ascorbic acid and persulfate, copolymers of highest percentage grafting was obtained and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA and XRD. The copolymer was evaluated as an adsorbent for the adsorption of Ni(II) and Cd(II). Various adsorption parameters such as contact time, pH, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, electrolyte strength and adsorbent dosage were varied to obtain the optimum conditions for the adsorption. The adsorption data for Cd(II), fitted better for Langmuir and Ni(II), fitted much better for Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Maximum adsorption obtained for cadmium ions and nickel ions was 308.6 mg/g-1 and 305.8 mg/g-1 respectively. The adsorption of both metal ions followed pseudo second order kinetic model. The positive ΔH values endorsed the adsorption process to be endothermic in nature. The negative values of ΔG indicate the spontaneity of the adsorption process while the positive ΔS values showed that the adsorption of metal ions proceeded with increased randomness at the surface of the copolymer. High recovery percentage of the metal ions from the adsorbent indicates that the copolymer can be used for more adsorption cycles.

Photo-degradable salecan/xanthan gum ionic gel induced by iron (III) coordination for organic dye decontamination

As dye adsorbents with great potential, polysaccharide-based hydrogels are significantly hampered in practical application owing to intricate preparation methods, low absorption, and bad degradability. Salecan is a water-soluble extracellular polysaccharide with excellent physicochemical and biological properties. Here, salecan and xanthan gum were first used as a dual-precursors system, their mixed solution was crosslinked by Fe³⁺ to assemble a photo-degradable ionic gel for malachite green (MG) adsorption. Photo-degradation was done using visible light under very mild conditions, which gave rise to gel network dissolution and homogeneous solution formation. Extensive dynamic coordinate interactions between Fe³⁺ and polysaccharides maintained gel matrix stability and were systematically investigated. The control of water uptake, micro-structure, and rheology can be facilely implemented by tuning salecan/xanthan gum ratios. Furthermore, various parameters such as polysaccharide ratios, pHs, MG concentrations, and contact time affecting adsorption were optimized using batch experiments. Adsorption process accurately adhered to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 463.0 mg/g. Such mechanism implied monolayer chemisorptive characteristics. The gel exhibited satisfactory reusability and was recycled five times without apparent decrease in adsorption capacity. From these results, the photo-degradable Fe³⁺-induced salecan/xanthan gum ionic gel is an alternative and sustainable absorbent for MG removal.

Polysaccharide-Based Composite Hydrogels as Sustainable Materials for Removal of Pollutants from Wastewater

Nowadays, pollution has become the main bottleneck towards sustainable technological development due to its detrimental implications in human and ecosystem health. Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Recent Advances in Polysaccharide-Based Physical Hydrogels and Their Potential Applications for Biomedical and Wastewater Treatment

Polysaccharides have been widely employed to fabricate hydrogels owing to their intrinsic properties including biocompatibility, biodegradability, sustainability, and easy modification. However, a considerable amount of polysaccharide-based hydrogels are prepared by chemical crosslinking method using organic solvents or toxic crosslinkers. The presence of reaction by-products and residual toxic substances in the obtained materials cause a potential secondary pollution risk and thus severely limited their practical applications. In contrast, polysaccharide-based physical hydrogels are preferred over chemically derived hydrogels and can be used to address existing drawbacks of chemical hydrogels. The polysaccharide chains of such hydrogel are typically crosslinked by dynamic non-covalent bonds, and the co-existence of multiple physical interactions stabilize the hydrogel network. This review focuses on providing a detailed outlook for the design strategies and formation mechanisms of polysaccharide-based physical hydrogels as well as their specific applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, and wastewater treatment. The main preparation principles, future challenges, and potential improvements are also outlined. The authors hope that this review could provide valuable information for the rational fabrication of polysaccharide-based physical hydrogel. The specific research works listed in the review will provide a systematic and solid research basis for the reliable development of polysaccharide-based physical hydrogel. Preparation and Characterizations of PSS/PDADMACPolyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogel

Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogel, formed via physically electrostatic crosslinks between polyanion and polycation, is an interesting hydrogel in terms of its nontoxicity and solvent-free technique. In this work, poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly (diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) complex hydrogels were prepared. Firstly, the PSS/PDADMAC complex aggregates using various PSS/PDADMAC mole fractions that were prepared in the presence of NaCl solution. Then, the aggregates were resolubilized under stirring at 70 °C for 2 h to obtain a homogeneous PEC solution. Finally, the PEC solution was dialyzed using a dialysis membrane with 3500 molecular cut-off for 1 day. The dialysis bath was changed every interval period of 2 h to control the rate of reversible electrostatic interaction, resulting in the homogenous PEC hydrogel with porous morphology as revealed by SEM and BET investigations. The dimensional stability and viscoelasticity of the PEC hydrogel was studied by DMA experiment, which showed the viscoelastic behavior at a compressive force ranging from 0 to 0.1 N. Finally, PSS/PDADMAC hydrogels showed a high water absorbency property and excellent affinity to textile anionic dyes.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Facile fabrication of semi-IPN hydrogel adsorbent based on quaternary cellulose via amino-anhydride click reaction in water

Clean and safe water resources play a key role in environmental safety and human health. Recently, hydrogels have attracted extensive attention due to their non-toxicity, controllable performance, and high adsorption. Herein, a semi- interpenetrating network hydrogel (semi-IPN-Gel) adsorbent based on quaternary cellulose (QC) was prepared by the amino-anhydride click reaction between maleic anhydride copolymer and polyacrylamine hydrochloride (PAH), and its adsorption properties for Eosin Y were studied. First, a binary copolymer (PAM) of acrylamide and maleic anhydride was synthesized by free radical polymerization. Then, the PAM, QC and PAH were dissolved in water, and the pH of the solution was adjusted to alkaline. Semi-IPN-Gel was successfully prepared by fast anhydride-amino click reaction. The preparation conditions of hydrogels were optimized by single-factor experiments. Finally, taking Eosin Y as a model pollutant, the adsorption performance of Eosin Y was studied. The factors influencing the adsorption capacity of the absorbents such as initial concentration of the Eosin Y, temperature, the amount of absorbent, ionic strength and pH of the Eosin Y solutions were investigated. And adsorption data were analyzed via the kinetic model and the isothermal model, indicating that the adsorption process of the hydrogel is a single layer chemisorption process.

Sustainable approaches for nickel removal from wastewater using bacterial biomass and nanocomposite adsorbents: A review

In this article, the nickel (Ni²⁺) ions removal from the wastewater is reviewed. Adsorption is widely used to remove Ni²⁺ ions from waters and wastewaters. The usage of biomass is becoming more common for Ni²⁺ ions removal, while the commercial activated carbon from different agriculture wastes is preferred as an adsorbent for Ni²⁺ ion removal. The present review aimed to organise the available information regarding sustainable approaches for Ni²⁺ ions removal from water and wastewaters. These include adsorption by nanoparticles, bacterial biomass, and activated carbon from agriculture wastes, since they are the most common used for the Ni²⁺ ions removal. The bacterial and agricultural waste adsorbents exhibited high efficiency with a renewable source of biomass for Ni²⁺ ion removal. The biosorption capacity of the Ni²⁺ ions by the bacterial biomass range from 5.7 to 556 mg/g, while ranging from 5.8 to 150 mg/g by the activated carbon from different organic materials. The biosorption capacity of the nanocomposite adsorbents might reach to 400 mg/g. It appeared that the elimination of nickel ions need a selective biomass adsorbent such as the tolerant bacterial cells biomass which acts as a store for Ni²⁺ ion accumulations as a results for the active and passive transportation of the Ni²⁺ ions through the bacterial cell membrane.

Construction of a physically cross-linked carrageenan/chitosan/calcium ion double-network hydrogel for 3-Nitro-1, 2, 4-triazole-5-one removal

3-Nitro-1, 2, 4-triazole-5-one (NTO) is an important insensitive explosive. The discharge of NTO wastewater not only pollutes the environment but also causes the economic loss of the valuable explosive. Currently, the NTO wastewater in industrial production is often treated with activated carbon adsorbents. There are no green, efficient and specific adsorption materials for the NTO treatment yet. In the present work, polymer materials suitable for NTO adsorption were screened by molecular dynamics simulation. With the optimized materials, a carrageenan/chitosan/calcium ion physically cross-linked double network hydrogel (KC/CTS/Ca²⁺ PCDNH) was successfully prepared by the semi-soluble-acidified sol-gel conversion method. The structure and NTO adsorption performance of the hydrogel were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The NTO adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics were further studied to understand the adsorption behavior and mechanism. In addition, the adsorbed NTO was successfully released and recovered by soaking the hydrogel in NaOH solution. Our work has provided an environmentally friendly and targeted preparation method of NTO adsorbent materials for NTO wastewater treatment.

Simple ultrasonic-assisted approach to prepare polysaccharide-based aerogel for cell research and histocompatibility study

Salecan, a water-soluble microbial polysaccharide with attractive biocompatible characteristics, is very suitable for aerogel fabrication. However, the practical application of salecan-based aerogels for cell culture was limited by complicated preparation method, lack of cell anchorage signals, and the ability to modulate this properly. Here, a smart aerogel was designed by ultrasonic-assisted self-assembly of salecan and cationic starch (CAS) without any organic and toxic crosslinkers. The ultrasound waves generated a marked impact on self-assemble process by means of ultrasonic cavitation. Aerogel network was produced by strong electrostatic attractions between the polysaccharides. Especially, salecan/CAS ratio can be precisely modulated to tailor the hydrophilicity, mechanical stiffness, and morphologic property. The specific surface area of the aerogels gradually increased with the increase in salecan/CAS ratio. These aerogels were non-cytotoxic, and the incorporation of salecan into them promoted cell-matrix interactions by directionally supporting cell adhesion and proliferation. Most strikingly, in vivo experiment revealed that the histological features in the main organs of the mice were similar to those observed in the PBS-treated control group, and no sign of the histopathological abnormality or tissue destruction was observed, indicating the excellent histocompatibility of the aerogels. This study offered a new and powerful avenue to fabricate functional biomaterial.
