Preparation of AAEK-functionalized cellulose film with antibacterial and anti-adhesion activities

An agarose-based TOCN-ECM bilayer lyophilized-hydrogel with hemostatic and regenerative properties for post-operative adhesion management

This study used a unique approach by developing a bilayer system that can simultaneously accomplish non-adhesion, hemostatic, and tissue regenerative properties. In this system, agarose was used as a carrier material, with an agarose-TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN), (AT) layer acting as a non-adhesion layer and an Agarose-Extracellular matrix, (AE) layer acting as a tissue regenerative layer. Thrombin was loaded on the AE layer as an initiator of the healing process, by hemostasis. AT 1:4 showed 79.3 % and AE 1:4 showed 84.66 % cell viability initially confirming the biocompatible nature of the layers. The AE layer showed cell attachment and proliferation on its surface whereas on the AT layer, cells are visible but no attachment was observed. Furthermore, in vivo analysis was conducted. The non-adhesive layer was grafted between the cecum and peritoneal wall which showed that (AT 1:4) displayed remarkable non-adhesion properties as compared to a commercial product and the non-treated group. Hemostasis and tissue regeneration ability were evaluated using rat liver models. The bleeding time of AE 1:4TH was recorded as 160 s and the blood loss was 5.6 g. The results showed that (AE 1:4) displayed effective regeneration ability in the liver model after two weeks.

Surface modifications of biomaterials in different applied fields

Biomaterial implantation into the human body plays a key role in the medical field and biological applications. Increasing the life expectancy of biomaterial implants, reducing the rejection reaction inside the human body and reducing the risk of infection are the problems in this field that need to be solved urgently. The surface modification of biomaterials can change the original physical, chemical and biological properties and improve the function of materials. This review focuses on the application of surface modification techniques in various fields of biomaterials reported in the past few years. The surface modification techniques include film and coating synthesis, covalent grafting, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), plasma surface modification and other strategies. First, a brief introduction to these surface modification techniques for biomaterials is given. Subsequently, the review focuses on how these techniques change the properties of biomaterials, and evaluates the effects of modification on the cytocompatibility, antibacterial, antifouling and surface hydrophobic properties of biomaterials. In addition, the implications for the design of biomaterials with different functions are discussed. Finally, based on this review, it is expected that the biomaterials have development prospects in the medical field.

Characterization of an active film prepared with Lentinus edodes (shiitake) polysaccharide and its effect on post-harvest quality and storage of shiitake

The aim of this study was to prepare a film based on shiitake (Lentinus edodes) stalk polysaccharides (LEP) for mushroom preservation. The effects of different LEP concentrations on physical, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the prepared film were evaluated. Using scanning electron microscopy, it was revealed that the addition of 1.5 % LEP resulted in homogeneous distribution in the prepared film, as well as greatly improved its antimicrobial properties. Moreover, LEP film resulted in superior mushroom preservation by regulating enzyme activities related to mushroom browning and softening, thereby decaying these processes. In addition, the prepared film maintained mushroom quality by reducing the accumulation of H₂O₂ and activating the regulatory system against oxidative stress. Collectively, the findings of the present study highlight the potential benefits of LEP films as a strategy to improve mushroom quality and prevent post-harvest spoilage, hence constituting a novel prospect for the development of shiitake by-products.

Baicalin-liposomes loaded polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan electrospinning nanofibrous films: Characterization, antibacterial properties and preservation effects on mushrooms

To investigate antibacterial properties and application in food preservation of nanofibrous films (NFs), baicalin-liposomes (BCL-LPs) were loaded into polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan (PVA-CS) substrates to form NFs using electrospinning technology. The microstructure and phase identification of the NFs were characterized. The antibacterial properties and cytotoxicity of NFs were determined. The preservation of the NFs to mushrooms was evaluated. The results showed that smooth and uniform NFs were formed through molecular interaction between BCL-LPs and PVA-CS matrix. The NFs exhibited good antibacterial effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to the bacterial destruction resulting from the BCL delivery to bacterial cells by liposomes. In addition, the NFs were compatible with L929 fibroblasts. The BCL-LPs/PVA-CS NFs inhibited weight loss, browning, rancidity and bacterial growth as well as maintained the nutrients of mushrooms. The results show BCL-LPs/PVA-CS NFs possessed effective antibacterial properties, non-cytotoxicity and preservation performance, indicating the potential utilization as food-active packing.
