Abstract
In this study, a new composite with combination of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), termed Chitosan Oligosaccharide-Zinc Oxide Nanocomposites (COS-ZnO NC), was designed to enhance the quality of tomato fruits during postharvest storage. SEM analysis showed a uniform distribution of COS-ZnO NC films on tomato surfaces, indicating high biocompatibility, while the FTIR spectrum confirmed the interaction of COS and ZnO NPs via hydrogen bonds. The COS-ZnO NC exerts positive effects on post-harvest quality of tomato fruits, including significantly reduced water loss, fewer skin wrinkles, increased sugar-acid ratio, and enhanced vitamin C and carotenoids accumulation. Furthermore, COS-ZnO NC induces transcription of carotenoid biosynthesis genes and promotes carotenoids storage in the chromoplast. These results suggest that the COS-ZnO NC film can significantly improve the quality traits of tomato fruits, and therefore is potential in post-harvest storage of tomato fruits.

Abstract
Scientific research targeted at enhancing scaffold qualities has increased significantly during the last few decades. This emphasis frequently centres on adding different functions to scaffolds in order to increase their usefulness as instruments in the field of regenerative medicine. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of a multifunctional sustainable polymer scaffold, specifically Polycaprolactone (PCL) embedded with hydroxyapatite co-doped with vanadium and strontium (HVS), for bone tissue engineering applications. Polycaprolactone was used to fabricate the scaffold, while hydroxyapatite co-doped with vanadium and strontium (HVS) served as the nanofiller. A thorough investigation of the physicochemical and biological characteristics of the HVS nanofiller was carried out using cutting-edge techniques including Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and in vitro cell studies. A cell viability rate of more than 70 % demonstrated that the synthesised nanofiller was cytotoxic, but in an acceptable range. The mechanical, biological, and physicochemical properties of the scaffold were extensively evaluated after the nanofiller was integrated. The water absorption characteristics of scaffold were enhanced by the addition of HVS nanofillers, leading to increased swelling, porosity, and hydrophilicity. These improvements speed up the flow of nutrients and the infiltration of cells into the scaffold. The scaffold has been shown to have important properties that stimulate bone cell activity, including better biodegradability and improved mechanical strength, which increased from 5.30 ± 0.37 to 10.58 ± 0.42 MPa. Further, its considerable antimicrobial qualities, blood-compatible nature, and capacity to promote biomineralization strengthen its appropriateness for usage in biomedical applications. Mainly, enhanced Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, Alizarin Red Staining (ARS) activity, and excellent cell adhesive properties, indicating the outstanding osteogenic potential observed in rat bone marrow-derived stromal cells (rBMSC). These combined attributes highlight the pivotal role of these nanocomposite scaffolds in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
The environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution have prompted the exploration of eco-friendly alternatives to disposable plastic packaging and utensils. Paper-based materials, derived from renewable resources such as wood pulp, non-wood pulp (bamboo pulp, straw pulp, reed pulp, etc.), and recycled paper fibers, are distinguished by their recyclability and biodegradability, making them promising substitutes in the field of plastic food packaging. Despite their merits, challenges like porosity, hydrophilicity, limited barrier properties, and a lack of functionality have restricted their packaging potential. To address these constraints, researchers have introduced antimicrobial agents, hydrophobic substances, and other functional components to improve both physical and functional properties. This enhancement has resulted in notable improvements in food preservation outcomes in real-world scenarios. This paper offers a comprehensive review of recent progress in hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials. In addition to outlining the characteristics and functions of commonly used antimicrobial substances in food packaging, it consolidates the current research landscape and preparation techniques for hydrophobic paper. Furthermore, the paper explores the practical applications of hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials in agricultural produce, meat, and seafood, as well as ready-to-eat food packaging. Finally, challenges in production, application, and recycling processes are outlined to ensure safety and efficacy, and prospects for the future development of antimicrobial hydrophobic paper-based materials are discussed. Overall, the emergence of hydrophobic antimicrobial paper-based materials stands out as a robust alternative to plastic food packaging, offering a compelling solution with superior food preservation capabilities. In the future, paper-based materials with antimicrobial and hydrophobic functionalities are expected to further enhance food safety as promising packaging materials.

Abstract
The presence of hazardous pollutants in water sources as a result of industrial activities is a major environmental challenge that impedes the availability of safe drinking water. Adsorptive and photocatalytic degradative removal of various pollutants in wastewater have been recognized as cost-effective and energy-efficient strategies. In addition to its biological activity, chitosan and its derivatives are considered as promising materials for the removal of various pollutants. The abundance of hydroxyl and amino groups in the chitosan macromolecular structure results in a variety of concurrent pollutant's adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, adding chitosan to photocatalysts increases the mass transfer while decreasing both the band gap energy and the amount of intermediates produced during photocatalytic processes, improving the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we have reviewed the current design and preparation of chitosan and its composites, as well as their applications for the removal of various pollutants by adsorption and photocatalysis processes. Effects of operating variables such as the pH, catalyst mass, contact time, light wavelength, initial pollutant's concentration, and catalyst recyclability, are discussed. Various kinetic and isotherm models are presented to elucidate the rates, and mechanisms of pollutant's removal, onto chitosan-based composites, and several case studies are presented. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of chitosan-based composites has been discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the applications of chitosan-based composites in wastewater treatment and put forward new insights for the development of highly effective chitosan-based adsorbents and photocatalysts. Finally, the main challenges and future directions in the field are discussed.

Abstract
The complication of stent implantation is the biggest obstacle to the success of its clinical application. In this study, we developed a combination way of 3D printing and the coating technique for preparation of functional polyurethane stents against stent implantation-induced thrombosis and postoperative infection. SEM, XPS, static water contact angle, and XRD demonstrated that the functional polyurethane stent had a 37 μm-thickness membrane composed of zein nanospheres (250-350 nm). Meanwhile, ZnO nanoparticles were encapsulated in zein nanospheres while heparin was adsorbed on the surface, causing 97.1 ± 6.4 % release of heparin in 120 min (first-order kinetic model) and 62.7 ± 5.6 % release of Zn2+ in 9 days (Korsmeyer-Peppas model). The mechanical analysis revealed that the functional polyurethane stents had about 8.61 MPa and 2.5 MPa tensile strength and bending strength, respectively. The in vitro biological analysis showed that the functional polyurethane stents had good EA.hy926 cells compatibility (97.9 ± 3.8 %), anti-coagulation response (comparable plasma protein, platelet adhesion and suppressed clotting) and sustained antibacterial activities by comparison with the bare polyurethane stent. The preliminary evaluation by rabbit ex vivo carotid artery intervention experiment demonstrated that the functional polyurethane stents could maintain blood circulation under the continuous stresses of blood flow. Meanwhile, the detailed data from the simulated implant infection experiment in vivo showed the functional polyurethane stents could effectively reduce microbial infection by 3-6 times lower and improve fibrosis and macrophage infiltration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overuse of antibiotics contributes to bacterial resistance in animals. Therefore, it is necessary to find a new way to ensure animal health and promote animal growth. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS)/vitamin E (VE)/attapulgite (APT) nanocomposites (SLK1, SLK3, SLK5) on growth performance and intestinal health in weaned piglets. Each 1 kg of SLK1, SLK3 or SLK5 contains 50 g of vitamin E, and each had a different MOS concentration [SLK1 (50 g kg -1 MOS), SLK3 (100 g kg -1 MOS), SLK5 (150 g kg -1 MOS)]. In total, 135 piglets were randomly divided into five groups (normal control group, traditional antibiotic substitutes group, SLK1 group, SLK3 group and SLK5 group), and growth performance, diarrhea index, intestinal epithelial barrier function and intestinal microbial composition were measured. RESULTS SLK1 and SLK5 significantly decreased diarrhea frequency in weaned piglets (p < 0.05). Furthermore, SLK5 significantly increased survival rate of weaned piglets compared to the traditional antibiotic substitutes group (p < 0.05). SLK5 also increased villus height of ileum, and increased goblet number of the jejunum (p < 0.05). 16S rRNA sequencing showed that SLK5 significantly regulated intestinal colonic microbiota composition (p < 0.05). Specifically, SLK5 significantly increased the abundance of Phascolarctobacterium succinatutens in the cecum and increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the colon (p < 0.05). In addition, dietary supplementation with 1 kg T-1 SLK5 also significantly increased the propionate content in the colon, which is significantly correlated with Phascolarctobacterium (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Dietary supplementation with 1 kg T-1 SLK5 improved intestinal epithelial barrier function, and regulated intestinal microbiota composition to prevent diarrhea in weaned piglets. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Attapulgite is a kind of natural clay mineral. Its unique pore structure makes it an ideal adsorption material and carrier material. However, the beneficial effect of modified attapulgites (SLK) in livestock is still unknown. The study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effect of modified attapulgites on diarrhea. 135 piglets were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed with control diet, traditional antibiotic substitute (TAS) supplementation diet, 0.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet, 1 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet, and 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet. This experiment lased two weeks. According to our result, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly decreased diarrhea score and diarrhea frequency, and effectively increased survival rate (P < 0.05). Dietary supplementation with 1.5 mg/kg SLK significantly increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and choline esterase (CHE) concentration in serum (P < 0.05). AS compared with TAS group, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly decreased villus height and increased goblet number in jejunum, and increased villus height and decreased goblet number in ileum (P < 0.05). 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet also significantly changed cecal microbial community composition, including increased Limosilactobacillus abundance (P < 0.05). 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly increased colonic microbial community composition, including decreased Escherichia-shigella abundance and increased Limosilactobacillus abundance (P < 0.05). Moreover, 1.5 mg/kg SLK supplementation diet significantly increased valerate, propionate, butyrate, and total short chain fatty acid contents in colon (P < 0.05). Valerate, propionate, butyrate, and total short chain fatty acid significantly associated with Lactobacillus. Fourerenilla and Fourerenilla.unclassfied significantly associated with acetate contents in colon (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with modified apptapulgites significantly regulate intestinal microbial community composition and alleviate intestinal epithelial barrier to prevent diarrhea in piglets.

Abstract
It is popular that natural organics are served as green reducing and end-capping reagent for synthesis of functional nanoparticles. In this study, curcumin, a natural pigment, was employed to prepare silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a coloring, reducing and end-capping agent by an eco-friendly, economic and facile approach in the presence of different clay minerals, including palygorskite, montmorillonite and mixed-dimensional palygorskite clay. It was found that the phenolic hydroxyl groups or carbonyl groups of curcumin played a crucial role to reduce silver ions into AgNPs with the ginger color. Meanwhile, incorporation of clay minerals could induce the in-situ heterogeneous nucleation of AgNPs on the surface or/and interlayer of the involved clay minerals. It effectively prevented from the aggregations and resulted in uniform dispersion of AgNPs with a diameter of 30-40 nm. Furthermore, the as-prepared nanocomposites exhibited a higher antioxidant (>90%) and antibacterial activity. Due to the synergistic effect of each component among the nanocompositions, the nanocomposites derived from different clay minerals were employed as multifunctional nanofillers to design functional chitosan composite films. By contrast, the chitosan composite films containing curcumin-capped AgNPs/mixed-dimensional palygorskite clay nanocomposites exhibited the best mechanical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Compared with the chitosan films, the tensile strength and elongation at break of composite films increased by 15.90 MPa and 27.27%, respectively. The inactivation rate of the composite films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus had reached 100%. Therefore, the obtained composite film with the ginger color exhibited excellent mechanical, water resistance, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, and it was expected to develop a great potential functional packaging materials.

Abstract
The proliferation of microorganisms is an important reason for meat spoilage and deterioration. Freezing and packaging by polymer films and preservatives are commonly used to preserve meat. While the energy consumption of freezing is very big, the polymer films made by petroleum bring up heavy environmental pressure. In the present study, biodegradable antibacterial ZnO@PLA (ZP) and ZnO@PVA/PLA (ZPP) nanocomposite films used as food packaging have been synthesized by the solvent evaporation method and coating method, respectively. Compared with films without ZnO NPs, ZP and ZPP both had long-term bacteriostasis for 24 and 120 h at temperatures of 25 and 4 °C, respectively. Moreover, the antibacterial effect showed positive relevance with the increase of the ZnO NP concentration. In addition, the antibacterial effect of ZPP was better than that of ZP in the same condition. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the numbers of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on ZP and ZPP were significantly reduced compared to that in the blank film, and ZPP caused the morphology of MRSA to change, which means that the antibacterial mechanism of ZP and ZPP composite films might be related to antibacterial adhesion. In conclusion, ZPP films have great potential to be regarded as the candidate of food packing to extend the shelf life of pork.

Abstract
In this study, the hydrothermal method was used to synthesis of silver indium sulfide/nickel molybdenum sulfide (AgInS2/NiMoS4) nanostructure and decorated on Palygorskite (Plg) as an excellent carrier of antibacterial materials. The performance of the prepared AgInS2/NiMoS4/Plg composites was investigated for light-driven antibacterial process and detection of uric acid from biological samples. The result shows the highest antibacterial activity of the AgInS2/NiMoS4/Plg with the minimum inhibitory concentrations about 0.2-0.3 mg/mL. The prepared AgInS2/NiMoS4/Plg as sensor depicted enhanced peroxidase-like activity for detection of acid uric. The detection limit of acid uric by AgInS2/NiMoS4/Plg was about 26.1 nM. Therefore, the AgInS2/NiMoS4/Plg can be developed in the bactericidal process and sensing in complex biological systems.

Abstract
The global turn from the linear to the circular economy imposes changes in common activities such as food packaging. The use of biodegradable materials such as polyvinyl alcohol, natural raw materials such as clays, and food byproducts such as chitosan to develop novel food packaging films attracts the interest of industrial and institutional research centers. In this study, novel hybrid nanostructures were synthesized via the growth of zinc oxide nanorods on the surface of two nanoclays. The obtained nanostructures were incorporated with chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol composite either as nanoreinforcement or as an active agent to develop packaging films. The developed films were characterized via XRD, FTIR, mechanical, water-vapor diffusion, water sorption, and oxygen permeability measurements. Antimicrobial activity measurements were carried out against four different pathogen microorganisms. XRD indicated the formation of an intercalated nanocomposite structure for both types of nanoclays. Furthermore, improved tensile, water/oxygen barrier, and antimicrobial properties were recorded for all films compared to the pure chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol film. Overall, the results indicated that the use of the bio-based developed films led to an extension of food shelf life and could be used as novel active food packaging materials. Among them, the most promising film was the 6% wt. ZnO@halloysite.
