Abstract
A novel biphasic system containing water-soluble deep eutectic solvent (DES) and cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) was developed to treat Eucalyptus for furfural production, extracting lignin and enhancing cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis. Herein effect of DES type, water content in DES, temperature and time on furfural yield in water-soluble DES/CPME pretreatment process was firstly evaluated. A maximum furfural yield of 80.6 % was attained in 10 min at 150 °C with choline chloride (ChCl)/citric acid monohydrate (CAM)/CPME system containing 30 wt% water and 2.5 wt% SnCl4·5H2O, which was higher than that obtained from ChCl/CAM/CPME system without water (55.5 %) and H2O/CPME system (49.7 %). These results demonstrated that the water-soluble DES/CPME system was a powerful method enhancing the furfural production. Under the optimal pretreatment conditions, the delignification and glucose yield were reached to 72.7 % and 94.3 %, respectively. The extracted lignin showed low molecular weight and β-aryl-ether was obviously cleaved. Additionally, water-soluble DES/CPME pretreatment led to a significant removal of hemicelluloses (100.0 %) and lignin (72.7 %) and introduced morphological changes on cell walls, especially from the cell corner (CC) and secondary wall (SW) layers. Overall, this work proposed a practical one-step fractionation strategy for co-producing furfural, lignin and fermentable sugar, providing a way to biorefinery.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offer a potential opportunity in biomass utilization industries. This work emphasized the impact of hydrogen bond donors (HBD) and acceptors (HBA) on deconstruction and valorization of rice straw. Acidity, alkyl chain length, hydrogen bonding ability and functional groups of HBD and HBA appeared to be important factors affecting the fractionated pulps and lignins, which further influenced ethanol fermentation. Among the candidate DESs, lactic acid/guanidine hydrochloride (LGH) was proved to be the most suitable one due to the excellent delignification and xylan removal. For the downstream fermentation process, 0.47 g g-1 of bioethanol with 0.55 g/L h-1 of productivity can be obtained from the LGH pulp's hydrolysate. Mass balance showed 302.8 g bioethanol and 119.0 g technical lignin can be co-generated from 1 kg dried rice straw. This "green" valorization strategy offers a promising scheme in biorefinery of lignocelluloses.

Abstract
Lignocellulose biorefinery depended on effective pretreatment strategies is of great significance for solving the current global crisis of ecosystem and energy security. This study proposes a novel approach combining seawater hydrothermal pretreatment (SHP) and microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (MD) pretreatment to achieve an effective fractionation of Pinus massoniana into high value-added products. The results indicated that complex ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, and Cl-) in natural seawater served as Lewis acids and dramatically promoted the depolymerization of mannose and xylan into oligosaccharides with 40.17 % and 75.43 % yields, respectively. Subsequent MD treatment realized a rapid and effective lignin fractionation (~90 %) while retaining cellulose. As a result, the integrated pretreatment yielded ~85 % of enzymatic glucose, indicating an eightfold increase compared with untreated pine. Because of the increased hydrophobicity induced by the formation of acyl groups during MD treatment, uniform lignin nanospheres were successfully recovered from the DES. It exhibited low dispersibility (PDI = 2.23), small molecular weight (1889 g/mol), and excellent oxidation resistance (RSI = 5.94), demonstrating promising applications in functional materials. The mechanism of lignin depolymerization was comprehensively elucidated via FTIR, 2D-HSQC NMR, and GPC analyses. Overall, this study provides a novel and environmentally friendly strategy for lignocellulose biorefinery and lignin valorization.

Abstract
A novel efficient pretreatment system containing alkaline deep eutectic solvent (DES) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) was developed in the present study. Under pretreatment conditions of 160 ℃ and 1 h, DES-THF pretreatment was more efficient (81.61%) in cellulose digestibility improvement than DES (choline chloride/monoethanolamine, 67.54%). To further explore lignin structural transformation and lignin-cellulase interaction after pretreatment, milled wood lignin (MWL) was extracted and characterized. Compared with DES-MWL, DES-THF-MWL showed an increased carboxyl group content (24.0%) and decreased condensed phenolic hydroxyl content (9.1%). In DES-MWL, β-O-4 content was 21.79%, while in DES-THF-MWL, β-O-4 accounted for 45.45%, indicating that the addition of THF alleviated cleavage of β-O-4 alkyl ether bonds. Fluorescence emission spectroscopy results showed that quenching mechanism of DES-THF-MWL and cellulase was dynamic, which was different from other lignin. Compared with DES-MWL, decreased Ka between DES-THF-MWL and cellulase indicated decreasing interaction between them. DES-THF pretreatment provides a novel pretreatment method for bioenergy.

Abstract
Pretreatment is a key process restricting the development of biorefinery. This work developed a pretreatment process based on an ethanolamine/acetamide alkaline deep eutectic solvent (ADES). Under microwave assistance, pure ADES pretreatment at 100 °C for 10 min achieved 95.9 % delignification and 95.2 % hemicellulose removal of bamboo shoot shells (BSS). Further, when 75 % water was added to pure DES to prepare hydrated DES (75 %-HADES), impressive delignification (93.2 %), hemicellulose removal (92.2 %) and cellulose recovery (94.8 %) were still achieved. The cellulose digestibility of the 75 %-HADES pretreated solid residue was significantly increased from 12.2 % (the control) to 91.2 %. Meanwhile, the structural features of hemicellulose and lignin macromolecules fractionated by 75 %-HADES pretreatment were well preserved, offering opportunities for downstream utilization. Overall, this work proposes an effective pretreatment strategy with the potential to enable the utilization of all major components of bamboo shoot shells.

Abstract
Due to the recalcitrant structure of woody biomass such as poplar, the efficient disassembly and separation of hemicellulose component from woody biomass is crucial for green biomass processing and full component utilization. This study presented an environmentally friendly approach to utilize acidic electrolyzed water (AEW) combined with metal salts and investigated its pretreatment effects on hemicellulose removal and cellulose and lignin retention under different conditions. Meanwhile, the structural properties and enzymatic hydrolysis performance of the pretreated residues were also characterized. As a result, under the optimized pretreatment conditions (0.03 mol/L FeCl3 with AEW at 180 °C for 10 min), hemicellulose removal from poplar wood reached 98.64 %, accompanied by xylose recovery rate of 98.46 %, cellulose retention rate of 93.43 % and lignin retention rate of 94.29 %. Enzymatic hydrolysis rate of the pretreated cellulose-enriched substrate reached 97.65 %. Furthermore, comprehensive structural characterizations revealed that FeCl3 coupled with AEW pretreatment resulted in surface damage to the poplar wood, effective removal of the amorphous hemicellulose component, and partial destruction of the cellulose crystallinity. In conclusion, FeCl3 coupled with AEW pretreatment effectively separates hemicellulose, leading to significant alterations in biomass composition and structure, ultimately resulting in improved enzymatic digestion. These results provide theoretical support for targeted dissociation of hemicellulose and full component utilization of woody biomass.

Abstract
This paper explored the mechanism of dissociation of hemicellulose using lactic acid (LA)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) synthesized with different hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) via simulations. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed that DESs synthesized with guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl) as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) demonstrated better hemicellulose solubilization compared to the conventional DESs synthesized using choline chloride (ChCl) as HBA. The best interaction with hemicellulose was achieved at GuHCl:LA = 1:1. The results showed that CL- played a dominant role in the dissolution of hemicellulose by DESs. Unlike ChCl, the guanidine group in GuHCl had the delocalized π bond, which made CL- have stronger coordination ability and promoted dissolution of hemicellulose by DESs. Moreover, multivariable analysis was employed to establish the correlation between the effects of different DESs on hemicellulose and the molecular simulation results. Additionally, the influence of different HBAs functional groups and carbon chain length on the solubilization of hemicellulose by DESs were analyzed.

Abstract
This study proposed a method to improve the bioavailability of artificially prepared carbon sources for the purpose of wastewater denitrification. This carbon source (named SPC) was prepared by mixing corncobs with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), where the corncobs were pretreated by NaOH or TMAOH. The results of compositional analysis and FTIR showed that both NaOH and TMAOH degraded lignin, hemicellulose and their connection bonds in corncob, thus increased the cellulose content from 39% to 53% and 55%, respectively. The cumulative carbon release from SPC was about 9.3 mg/g and was consistent with both the first-order kinetic and Ritger-Peppas equation. The released organic matters contained low concentration of refractory components. Correspondingly, it showed excellent denitrification performance in simulated wastewater, and the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate was above 95% (influent NO3--N was 40 mg/L) and effluent residual chemical oxygen demand (COD) was less than 50 mg/L.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biorefineries depended on effective pretreatment strategies to improve the conversion efficiency of the enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, this study coupled brown rot fungi and deep eutectic solvent (DES) to pretreat Pinus massoniana. The results showed that compared to fungal pretreatment and DES pretreatment alone, the combined ChCl-Lac/fungal pretreatments could effectively improve enzymatic saccharification of Pinus massoniana. The highest content of releasing reducing sugar reached 510.3 mg/g substrate. Environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM) showed that the surface structure of Pinus massoniana was almost completely torn and loose and FT-IR spectra and component analysis revealed that most of hemicellulose and lignin were selected removed and cellulose was enriched after ChCl-Lac/fungal pretreatments, which could account for the enhanced hydrolysis efficiency. The combination of biological pretreatment with DES pretreatment could be a mild and promising pretreatment approach for enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulose and had an extensive application prospect in the field of biorefinery.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant natural polymer on Earth, but the efficient fractionation and refinery of all its components remain challenging. Acidic deep eutectic solvents refining is a promising method, while it is likely to cause lignin condensation and carbohydrates degradation, especially at server operation conditions. Here we propose the use of acidic deep eutectic solvent (DES), choline chloride/p-toluenesulfonic acid assisted mechanochemical pretreatment (DM) for efficient lignocellulose fractionation at mild condition. Four representative lignocellulose, wheat straw, moso bamboo, poplar wood and pine wood were selected at varied milling time (3, 6 h) to assess the fractionation ability of this strategy. This DM pretreatment demonstrated a rather high cellulose retentions (∼90 %) and extent of delignification for wheat straw and bamboo biomass, which corresponds to a high extent of enzymatic hydrolysis (∼75.5 %) for sugar platform pursuing. The extracted lignin showed rather high content of β-O-4' leakages due to the swelling effect of deep eutectic solvent and mild operation conditions. This work provided a promising strategy to fractionate lignocellulose using deep eutectic solvents with the goal of simultaneous cellulose hydrolysis and reactive lignin obtaining that is usually difficult to realize using traditional chemical fractionation approach.

Abstract
The fractionation of hemicelluloses is a promising method to improve the comprehensive utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. However, the effective fractionation of hemicelluloses is always limited by the structural complexity and easy degradability. In this study, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was developed to fractionate hemicelluloses from poplar holocellulose with high molecular weights and high yields at room temperature. Approximately 90% of hemicelluloses could be dissolved at room temperature in 1 h, and the yield was up to 81.9%. Compared with the fractionation using NaOH solution, the hemicelluloses isolated by TMAH solvent showed a more complete structure and higher purity. Meanwhile, the retention rate of cellulose after treatment with TMAH was up to 90.2%, and the crystal structure of cellulose in the residues was practically unchanged. Moreover, the TMAH solvent could be recycled to fractionate hemicelluloses. The work provides an elegant and significantly efficient method towards hemicelluloses fractionation and cellulose purification.

Abstract
Introduction: A combination of deep eutectic solvent with ethanol was developed for pretreatment of Broussonetia papyrifera to effectively extract lignin and promote the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. Methods: In order to further explore the optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis, a central composite design method was applied. Results and Discussion: The correlation between each factor and glucose yield was obtained, and the optimal conditions was 160°C, 60 min, the ratio of DES to E was 1/1 (mol/mol). The results showed that compared with control, the glucose yield increased by 130.67% under the optimal pretreatment conditions. Furthermore, the specific surface area of biomass was increased by 66.95%, and the content of xylan and lignin was decreased by 86.71% and 85.83%. The correlation between xylan/lignin removal and enzymatic hydrolysis showed that the removal of lignin facilitated the glucose yield more significantly than that of xylan. To further explore the lignin valorization, the structural and antioxidant analysis of recovered lignin revealed that high temperature was favorable for lignin with good antioxidant performance. This pretreatment is a promising method for separating lignin with high antioxidant activity and improving cellulose digestibility.

Abstract
Herein, a mild fractionation method by employing polyol-based Brønsted acidic DESs (BDESs) was proposed to extract lignin with well-preserved β-O-4 substructures and to enhance fermentable sugar yields simultaneously. For ethylene glycol-oxalic acid (EG-OA), more than 53 % of lignin was obtained and superb carbohydrate digestibility (i.e., glucose and xylose yields were reached to 94.6 % and 87.7 %, respectively) was achieved after pretreatment. Remarkably, detailed structural studies revealed that the polyol was incorporated into lignin, which stabilized reactive carbocation intermediates formed during BDESs treatment and prevented undesired recondensation reactions. This lignin protection mechanism was shown to play a key role in enzymatic hydrolysis enhancement and lignin valorization. The resultant β-O-4 linkage-rich lignin fractions were attractive for natural sunscreen applications due to their lighter color and excellent UV-blocking performance. Overall, this work proposed a sustainable and economically practical lignin-first biorefinery approach that is beneficial for achieving comprehensive valorization of lignocellulose.

Abstract
Polysaccharide-based composite films were developed using mucilage polysaccharides (OLP) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) extracted from okra leafstalk wastes. The rheological properties of biocomposite OLP/CMC film-forming solutions were characterized using the Power-law model, and fabricated films were characterized for their potential food packaging applications. OLP/CMC solutions exhibited pseudo-plastic fluid characteristics and differences in rheological behavior (n, 0.478-0.743), and flow consistency (K, 1.731-9.154) with increasing content of OLP (5 to 30 % w/w of CMC) were associated with variations in the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of films. Surface hydrophobicity (24%) increased and oxygen (39%) and water vapor (32%) permeability reduced in OLP/CMC films containing up to 10% OLP. Moreover, a higher content of OLP enhanced the antioxidant activity and thermal stability of OLP/CMC films. Subsequently, OLP/CMC was applied as a coating to preserve cherry tomatoes for 14 days at 30 °C. Quality deterioration characterized by high weight loss (22%), firmness loss (74.62%), and discoloration (∆E, 21.26) occurred in uncoated tomatoes and were within unusable/unmarketable limits based on their visual quality score. In contrast, OLP/CMC effectively minimized quality losses, and coated tomatoes exceeded the limit of marketability after 14 days of storage. This study successfully applied value-added polysaccharides derived from okra plant residues for edible food packaging.

Abstract
A choline chloride-formic acid (ChCl-FA) pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation were developed in this work for co-produce bioethanol, xylose, and lignin from eucalyptus. Results showed that ChCl-FA pretreatment can simultaneously degrade the xylan (∼95.2%) and lignin (∼74.4%) in eucalyptus, and obtained the pretreated eucalyptus having high glucan content and a numbers of cracks and holes, which was conducive to follow-up cellulase attacking. The hydrolysis experiments showed the maximum yield of glucose of 100 g eucalyptus was 35.3 g, which was equivalent to 90.3% of glucan in eucalyptus feedstock. The fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysate finally achieved the ethanol yield of 16.5 g, which corresponded to 74.5% theoretical ethanol yield from initial glucan in eucalyptus. In addition, 12.1 g xylose and 23.9 g lignin also could be obtained in pretreated liquid or/and hydrolysis residue, which represented for 61.4% xylan and 80.7% lignin in eucalyptus feedstock, respectively.

Abstract
Novel and green cholinium amino acids-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their aqueous mixtures were synthesized and employed in deconstructing poplar for hemicellulose fractionation. The effects of water content in DESs on hemicellulose dissociation and structural features were comprehensively investigated, along with the reusability of DESs for treatment. The integration of water into DESs could facilitate hemicellulose fractionation, and the cholinium lysine: urea with 5 wt% water (CL: U-5) demonstrated the best performance with a hemicellulose yield of 59.2%. Further structure analysis revealed that hemicelluloses with various branching degrees and molecular weights were obtained with varying water content of DESs. Furthermore, the CL: U-5 had recyclability and reusability with a 40.5% hemicellulose yield obtained after reused three times. The novel and eco-friendly cholinium amino acids-based DESs treatment provides an effective and sustainable strategy for hemicellulose fractionation from woody biomass.

Abstract
Herein, a short-time alkaline enhanced aqueous DES (AaDES) pretreatment using choline chloride/ethylene glycol was reported, aiming at enhancing cellulose and xylan enzymatic digestibility. Simultaneously, saccharification efficiency of cellulose and xylan was reached to 91.2% and 99.0%, respectively, ∼4 and ∼ 24 times that of raw poplar. Pretreatment time was substantially shortened from 15-24 h to 4 h. Notably, 43.00 kg fermentable sugars (73% of the theoretical maximum) and 12.98 kg lignin with rich β-O-4' linkages were obtained based on 100 kg poplar. The complete removal of acetyl and partial removal of lignin and mannan contributed to excellent pretreatment performance. It was found that enzymatic digestibility of xylan/cellulose was positively correlated with removal of mannan (R2 = 0.9719; R2 = 0.9010) and delignification (R2 = 0.6888; R2 = 0.8293). Drastic reduction in pretreatment time along with high-yield sugars in AaDES system will provide strength towards industrial level biorefinery.

Synthesis of Green Deep Eutectic Solvents for Pretreatment Wheat Straw: Enhance the Solubility of Typical Lignocellulose. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), a novel and environmentally-friendly solvent, have high potential for biomass pretreatment due to its advantages of low cost, low toxicity, strong solubility, excellent selectivity and biocompatibility. Two types of DES (binary and ternary) were synthesized and characterized, and optimized ternary DES was selected to pretreat wheat straw for enhancement of the solubility of lignocellulose. Moreover, enzymatic hydrolysis was tested to verify the performance of pretreatment. In addition, the changes in surface morphology, structure and crystallinity of wheat straw pretreated by DES were analyzed to reveal the pretreatment mechanism. Experimental results indicated that viscosity exhibited little difference in different types of DESs, and a declining trend as the temperature increases in same DES. The ternary DES pretreatment efficiently enhanced the solubility of typical lignocellulose, with the optimal removal rate of lignin at approximately 69.46%. Furthermore, the total sugar concentration of the residue was about 5.1 times more than that of untreated wheat straw after the pretreated samples were hydrolyzed by the cellulase for 24 h, indicating that DES has the unique ability to selectively extract lignin and hemicellulose from wheat straw while retaining cellulose, and thus enhanced the solubility of lignocellulose. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) determination showed that the surface of wheat straw suffered from serious erosion and the crystallinity index of wheat straw increased after DES5 pretreatment. Therefore, DES cleaves the covalent bond between lignin and cellulose and hemicellulose, and reduces the intractability of lignin resulting in the lignin dissolution. It suggests that DES can be used as a promising and biocompatible pretreatment way for the cost-effective conversion of lignocellulose biomass into biofuels.
