Abstract
This study addresses the need for sustainable fruit preservation packaging by developing biodegradable films from nonconventional starch sources. The purpose was to enhance film properties and antioxidant capabilities using fatty acid-modified Artocarpus lakoocha starch films incorporated with thymol. The objective is to evaluate the impact of fatty acid modification on film characteristics and the antioxidant potential of thymol-unfused films. The films were prepared using the solvent casting method and analysed for physical, mechanical, morphological, thermal, analytical, and antioxidant properties. Results indicate that fatty acid modification reduces moisture content (10.30 ± 1.02) and improves transparency (29.66 ± 0.42) compared to non-modified starch films (42.64 ± 1.18). SEM analysis reveals a smooth and homogeneous surface, and X-ray diffraction indicates A-type crystallinity in native starch. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between fatty acid, thymol, starch, and glycerol. Thermal analysis demonstrates good stability. Starch modification with fatty acid notably enhances film strength, flexibility, and overall functionality. Thymol-infused films exhibit antioxidant properties, with stearic acid-modified starch film showing the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (90.01 %). In conclusion, this study highlights the utilization of nonconventional starch sources to producing biodegradable films with antioxidant properties, offering promising applications in sustainable fruit preservation packaging.

Abstract
Starch-based plastics offer a potential solution to environmental pollution and can reduce the dependence on petroleum-based plastics. However, effectively preparing starch-based plastics with moisture resistance and high strength remains challenging. Herein, dialdehyde starch (DAS) with different degrees of oxidation was first synthesised. The molecular weight and crystallinity of DAS decreased depending on the aldehyde content, as determined through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and molecular weight analyses. Subsequently, a sustainable starch plastic (DAS-DA) was prepared via the dynamic imine crosslinking of DAS with diamines. The influence of the degree of oxidation of DAS on the structure and properties of DAS-DA was systematically investigated. No linear relationship was observed between the tensile strength of DAS-DA and the aldehyde content of DAS. When the aldehyde content was 41.1 %, the resulting DAS41-DA exhibited optimal mechanical strength (27.8 MPa), exceeding that of most reported starch-based plastics. In addition, owing to the presence of imine crosslinking networks, DAS41-DA exhibited excellent water and solvent resistance (>60 days), good thermal stability (456 °C-462 °C) and excellent reprocessability and biodegradability. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the preparation of high-performance bioplastics from aldehyde-containing polysaccharides.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the changes in the structural and functional properties of cornstarch modified by oxidation, esterification, and cross-linking under ultrasonic pretreatment. FT-IR and XRD characteristic peaks revealed successful access to chemical functional groups. Both ultrasonic and the three chemical treatments eroded the surface of starch granules, reducing their particle size and increasing their RC. Meanwhile, the destruction of the granules was further enhanced by the dual modification treatments. The ultrasonic pretreatment synergized and improved the swelling power, solubility, and translucency of all three chemical treatments. Further, it improved the poorer freeze-thaw stability of cross-linked starch, resulting in a lower water precipitation rate. In addition, both ultrasonic and chemical treatments significantly decreased RDS and SDS, and increased RS content. The ultrasonic-chemical dual modification had a synergistic effect on in vitro digestibility, resulting in a further increase in RS. In conclusion, this study provided ideas for developing new starch modification technology and deep processing of cornstarch, expanding its application areas and thus meeting the different needs of starch-based products.

Abstract
The fabrication possibility of nanocomposite film from sweet cherry tree exudate gum (SCG) was studied. To improve SCG film properties, oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet irradiation (UV-A and UV-C), and TiO2 nanoparticles (T-NPs) were used. Hydrogen peroxide oxidation at higher amounts decreased the water vapor permeability (WVP) and thickness and increased the mechanical properties and transparency. In comparison with the UV-A, UV irradiation of the C-type increased permeability, and elongation at break (EAB) and thickness, but reduced the tensile strength (TS), solubility, and transparency. The permeability and tensile strength were increased and elongation at break was decreased at a longer time of irradiation. The transparency values of fabricated films ranged from 65.3 to 79.5 % and WVP were in the range of 2.32-4.72 (×10-10 g/m.s.Pa). The measured TS of the SCG films were between 2.2 and 5 MPa and the EAB of the SCG films was between 35 and 68.7 %. The FTIR spectrum and SEM images revealed that the treatments could affect the bonds and the smoothness of the film surface, respectively. Images provided by AFM showed that the roughness of the films was increased by the addition of T-NPs. The incorporation of T-NPs increased the TS and decreased EAB and WVP. These results indicated that oxidation, UV irradiation and nanomaterials incorporation could be used to improve SCG film properties that are related to food packaging material.

Abstract
Citric acid (CA) is a green and safe food-grade crosslinking agent for starch, but its high crosslinking temperature limits its application. In this study, a "one-step" extrusion modification method based on Ca2+-esterification synergistic crosslinking was proposed for the preparation of high gel performance crosslinked starch at low temperatures (90 °C). The linear and nonlinear rheological properties of crosslinked starch were comprehensively characterized, and the enhancement effect of synergistic crosslinking reactions on starch gel properties was quantitatively studied. The results show that the elastic modulus of the synergistically crosslinked starch (SC-0.5Ca2+, G' = 3116 ± 36) was significantly increased by 879 % compared to the elastic modulus of starch without synergistically crosslinked modification (SC, G' = 318 ± 9). The elastic modulus of starch gels can be adjusted by changing the ion concentration. Nonlinear rheological Lissajous curve analysis results show that the synergistic crosslinked gel system has a stronger anti-deformation ability. In addition, the honeycomb porous structure and smaller pore size distribution of the synergistic crosslinked gels were characterized using scanning SEM. The XPS, FTIR and XRD results suggest that the synergistic crosslinking enhancement effect may involve various molecular forces such as electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding and ester bonding.

Abstract
In this paper, using a coprecipitation method to prepare Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 MNPS), magnetic dialdehyde starch nanoparticles with immobilized phospholipase A1 (MDSNIPLA) were successfully prepared by using green dialdehyde starch (DAS) instead of glutaraldehyde as the crosslinking agent. The Fe3O4 MNPS was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis method, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) et al. The results showed that the alkaline resistance and acid resistance of the enzyme were improved after the crosslinking of DAS. After repeated use (seven times), the relative activity of MDSNIPLA reached 56 %, and the magnetic dialdehyde starch nanoparticles (MDASN) had good carrier performance. MDSNIPLA was applied to enzymatic hydrolysis of phospholipids in the soybean oil degumming process. The results showed that the acyl transfer rate of sn-2-HPA was 14.01 %, and the content of free fatty acids was 1.144 g/100 g after 2 h reaction at 50 °C and pH 5.0 with appropriate boric acid. The immobilized enzyme has good thermal stability and storage stability, and its application of soybean oil improves the efficiency of the oil.

Abstract
Crosslinking is a promising method to modulate the gel properties of food-grade starch gels. Still, the poor crosslinking effect of a single type of crosslinker limits the application of this method in starch gel modification. In this study, an Ca2+ synergistic multiple crosslinking modification method was proposed to prepare crosslinked starches with good gel properties and setting. The rheological properties of the samples were tested. The modified sample (SC-Ca-N3, G' = 1347 ± 27) showed a 79% improvement compared to the starch without synergistic crosslinking modification (SC-N, G' = 752 ± 6). The elastic modulus of starch gels can be adjusted by changing the degree of the crosslinking reaction. The results of nonlinear rheological Lissajous curve analysis showed that the synergistically crosslinked gel system strongly resisted deformation. In addition, the microstructure of the modified samples was characterized using scanning electron microscopy. The XPS, FTIR, and XRD results indicated that multiple molecular forces participate in the synergistic crosslinking reaction.

Abstract
This comprehensive review thoroughly examines starch's structure, modifications, and applications in slow/controlled-release fertilizers (SRFs) for agricultural purposes. The review begins by exploring starch's unique structure and properties, providing insights into its molecular arrangement and physicochemical characteristics. Various methods of modifying starch, including physical, chemical, and enzymatic techniques, are discussed, highlighting their ability to impart desirable properties such as controlled release and improved stability. The review then focuses on the applications of starch in the development of SRFs. It emphasizes the role of starch-based hydrogels as effective nutrient carriers, enabling their sustained release to plants over extended periods. Additionally, incorporating starch-based hydrogel nano-composites are explored, highlighting their potential in optimizing nutrient release profiles and promoting plant growth. Furthermore, the review highlights the benefits of starch-based fertilizers in enhancing plant growth and crop yield while minimizing nutrient losses. It presents case studies and field trials demonstrating starch-based formulations' efficacy in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Overall, this review consolidates current knowledge on starch, its modifications, and its applications in SRFs, providing valuable insights into the potential of starch-based formulations to improve nutrient management, boost crop productivity, and support sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Plastic waste poses a significant challenge for the environment, particularly smaller plastic products that are often difficult to recycle or collect. In this study, we developed a fully biodegradable composite material from pineapple field waste that is suitable for small-sized plastic products that are difficult to recycle, such as bread clips. We utilized starch from waste pineapple stems, which is high in amylose content, as the matrix, and added glycerol and calcium carbonate as the plasticizer and filler, respectively, to improve the material's moldability and hardness. We varied the amounts of glycerol (20-50% by weight) and calcium carbonate (0-30 wt.%) to produce composite samples with a wide range of mechanical properties. The tensile moduli were in the range of 45-1100 MPa, with tensile strengths of 2-17 MPa and an elongation at break of 10-50%. The resulting materials exhibited good water resistance and had lower water absorption (~30-60%) than other types of starch-based materials. Soil burial tests showed that the material completely disintegrated into particles smaller than 1 mm within 14 days. We also created a bread clip prototype to test the material's ability to hold a filled bag tightly. The obtained results demonstrate the potential of using pineapple stem starch as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based and biobased synthetic materials in small-sized plastic products while promoting a circular bioeconomy.

Abstract
In this study, biodegradable starch film was developed from pineapple stem waste as a substitute for non-biodegradable petroleum-based films for single-use applications where strength is not too demanding. High amylose starch from a pineapple stem was used as the matrix. Glycerol and citric acid were used as additives to adjust the ductility of the material. Glycerol content was fixed at 25% while that of citric acid varied from 0 to 15% by weight of starch. Films with a wide range of mechanical properties can be prepared. As more citric acid is added, the film becomes softer and weaker, and has greater elongation at the break. Properties range from a strength of about 21.5 MPa and 2.9% elongation to a strength of about 6.8 MPa and 35.7% elongation. An X-ray diffraction study showed that the films were semi-crystalline. The films were also found to be water-resistant and can be heat-sealed. An example of a single-use package was demonstrated. A soil burial test confirmed that the material was biodegradable and completely disintegrated into sizes smaller than 1 mm within one month.

Abstract
This study explored the effect of erythrosine B (EB) as a photosensitizer in corn starch (CS) film and its physicochemical properties and photodynamic bacteriostatic ability against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella both in vitro and inoculated on pork under the irradiation of D65 light-emitting diode (LED) (400-800 nm). The study revealed that the physiochemical properties of CS films: moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor transmission were improved with the addition of EB. In addition, the elasticity and the thermal stability of the film were enhanced. The results showed that the CS-EB films stimulated a maximum of 26.36 μg/mL hydrogen peroxide and 74.5 μg/g hydroxyl radical under irradiation. The CS composite films with a 5 % concentration of EB inhibited the bacterial growth by 4.7 Log CFU/mL in vitro after 30 min of illumination, and 2.4 Log CFU/mL on the pork samples under the same experimental condition. Moreover, the antibacterial ability was enhanced with the increase in EB concentration. Overall, the CS-EB composite films can inhibit the growth of bacteria through photodynamic inactivation and has the potential to become a new type of environmentally friendly packaging material.

Abstract
The environmental damage caused by plastic packaging and the need to reduce pollution requires actions to substitute plastic materials for more sustainable and biodegradable materials. Starch, gelatin, and bacterial cellulose films are three potential biodegradable polymeric films for use in packaging. However, these materials need improvements in their physical, chemical, and mechanical properties to be used in packaging. In this work, these films were treated with cold plasma to evaluate the effects of treatment conditions on several physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. The dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology was applied with varying treatment times (0 to 20 min) and excitation frequencies (50 to 900 Hz) at 20 kV. The optimal excitation frequency for starch films (50 Hz) was different from the optimal frequency for gelatin and bacterial cellulose films (900 Hz), indicating a high dependency on the treatment in this variable that is often neglected. Plasma treatment improved the hydrophobicity, surface morphology, water resistance, and mechanical properties of all three films, with the advantage of not recurring to chemical or biological additives.

Abstract
Active packaging films were prepared by adding red cabbage anthocyanin extract (RCAE) into acetylated distarch phosphate (ADSP). This paper investigated the influence of the interaction relationship between RCAE and the film matrix on the structure, barrier, antioxidant and release properties of active films. Sixteen principal compounds in RCAE were identified as anthocyanins based on mass spectroscopic analysis. Micromorphological observations indicated that the RCAE distribution uniformity in the films decreased as the RCAE content increased. When the concentration of RCAE was not higher than 20%, the moisture absorption and oxygen permeability of films decreased. The stability of RCAE in the films was enhanced by the electrostatic interaction between RCAE and ADSP with the formation of hydrogen bonds, which facilitated the sustainability of the antioxidant properties of films. The release kinetics of RCAE proved that the release rate of RCAE in active films was the fastest in distilled water, and Fickian’s law was appropriate for portraying the release behavior. Moreover, the cytocompatibilty assay showed that the test films were biocompatible with a viability of >95% on HepG2 cells. Thus, this study has established the suitability of the films for applications in active and food packaging.
