Facile fabrication of semi-IPN hydrogel adsorbent based on quaternary cellulose via amino-anhydride click reaction in water

Semi-IPN polysaccharide-based hydrogels for effective removal of heavy metal ions and dyes from wastewater: a comprehensive investigation of performance and adsorption mechanism

The escalating issue of environmental pollutants necessitates efficient, sustainable, and innovative wastewater treatment technologies. This review comprehensively analyzes the mechanisms and isotherms underlying the adsorption processes of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) polysaccharide-based hydrogels to remove heavy metal ions and dyes from wastewater. Polysaccharides are extensively utilized in hydrogel synthesis due to their biocompatibility, cost-effectiveness, and non-toxic nature. The synthesis of these hydrogels as semi-IPNs enhances their mechanical and structural robustness and adsorption capacity. This review explores the key parameters affecting adsorption performance, including pH, temperature, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. Findings highlight that semi-IPN polysaccharide-based hydrogels exhibit remarkable adsorption capabilities through electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and surface complexation. Furthermore, this review highlights the distinct advantages of semi-IPNs over other polymer networks. Semi-IPNs offer improved mechanical stability, higher adsorption efficiencies, and better reusability, making them a promising solution for wastewater treatment. Detailed isotherm models, including Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, were studied to understand these hydrogels' adsorption behavior and capacity for different pollutants. This study highlights the potential of semi-IPN polysaccharide-based hydrogels as effective adsorbents for heavy metals and dyes and as a promising solution for mitigating environmental pollution. The insights provided herein contribute to developing advanced materials for environmental remediation, aligning with global sustainability goals, and advancing wastewater treatment technology.

Facile fabrication of a thermal/pH responsive IPN hydrogel drug carrier based on cellulose and chitosan through simultaneous dual-click strategy

Herein, an interpenetrating network hydrogel (IPN-Gel) based on cellulose and chitosan was synthesized via simultaneous amino-anhydride and azide-alkyne click reaction in water in one pot. The samples were characterized by various analytical methods including FTIR, SEM, XRD, XPS, 1H NMR and so forth. The fabrication conditions were optimized by single factor experiments with water uptake (WU) and gel mass fraction (GMF) as two indexes. The WU and GMF of the IPN-Gel prepared under optimized conditions were 1192.37 % and 74.00 %, respectively. Its WU descended with the ascension in temperature, and first descended and then gradually ascended with the ascension in pH, confirming that the IPN-Gel had thermal/pH dual responsiveness. Using 5-Fu as a model drug, the release behavior of 5-Fu in IPN-Gel was explored. Its release behavior could be regulated by changing temperature and pH values, and it followed the Korsmeyer Peppas model. The viability of 4 T1 cells and HUVEC cells exceeded 80 % after 48 h of incubation at a high concentration of 200 μg/mL IPN-Gel, and hemolytic percentage was below the allowed limit of 5 %. The study provides a new strategy for the preparation of the IPN-Gel with biocompatibility, swelling reversibility and controllable drug release.

Effects of a semi-interpenetrating network hydrogel loaded with oridonin and DNase-I on the healing of chemoradiotherapy-induced oral mucositis

The aim of this study was to develop a semi-interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel system suitable for the oral environment, capable of controlled release of DNase-I and oridonin (ORI), to exert antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and reparative effects on chemoradiotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM). This IPN was based on the combination of ε-polylysine (PLL) and hetastarch (HES), loaded with DNase-I and ORI (ORI/DNase-I/IPN) for OM treatment. In vitro studies were conducted to evaluate degradation, adhesion, release analysis, and bioactivity including cell proliferation and wound healing assays using epidermal keratinocyte and fibroblast cell lines. Furthermore, the therapeutic effects of ORI/DNase-I/IPN were investigated in vivo using Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with chemoradiotherapy-induced OM. The results demonstrated that the IPN exhibited excellent adhesion to wet mucous membranes, and the two drugs co-encapsulated in the hydrogel were released in a controlled manner, exerting inhibitory effects on bacteria and degrading NETs in wound tissues. The in vivo wound repair effect, microbiological assays, H&E and Masson staining supported the non-toxicity of ORI/DNase-I/IPN, as well as its ability to accelerate the healing of oral ulcers and reduce inflammation. Overall, ORI/DNase-I/IPN demonstrated a therapeutic effect on OM in rats by significantly accelerating the healing process. These findings provide new insights into possible therapies for OM.

Hydrogel microrobots for biomedical applications

Recent years have witnessed a surge in the application of microrobots within the medical sector, with hydrogel microrobots standing out due to their distinctive advantages. These microrobots, characterized by their exceptional biocompatibility, adjustable physico-mechanical attributes, and acute sensitivity to biological environments, have emerged as pivotal tools in advancing medical applications such as targeted drug delivery, wound healing enhancement, bio-imaging, and precise surgical interventions. The capability of hydrogel microrobots to navigate and perform tasks within complex biological systems significantly enhances the precision, efficiency, and safety of therapeutic procedures. Firstly, this paper delves into the material classification and properties of hydrogel microrobots and compares the advantages of different hydrogel materials. Furthermore, it offers a comprehensive review of the principal categories and recent innovations in the synthesis, actuation mechanisms, and biomedical application of hydrogel-based microrobots. Finally, the manuscript identifies prevailing obstacles and future directions in hydrogel microrobot research, aiming to furnish insights that could propel advancements in this field.

Facile fabrication of temperature/pH dual sensitive hydrogels based on cellulose and polysuccinimide through aqueous amino-succinimide reaction

A temperature/pH dual sensitive hydrogel with a semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) structure was synthesized through an aqueous amino-succinimide reaction between water-soluble polysuccinimide and polyethyleneimine in the presence of thermosensitive cellulose derivatives. Single-factor experiments were carried out to optimize the preparation conditions of the semi-IPN hydrogel. The swelling behavior and cytotoxicity assay of the hydrogel were tested. Finally, taking 5- fluorouracil (5-Fu) as a model drug, the release performance of the 5-Fu-loaded hydrogel was investigated. The results indicated that the swelling ratio (SR) first decreased and then increased when the pH of the solutions ascended from 2 to 10. The SR decreased with the increase in temperature. In addition, the swelling behavior of the hydrogel was reversible and reproducible under different pH values and temperatures. The prepared hydrogels had good cytocompatibility. The release behavior of 5-Fu was most consistent with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model and followed the case II diffusion. The acidic environment was beneficial for the release of 5-Fu. The preparation process of the semi-IPN hydrogel is simple and the reaction can proceed quickly in water. The strategy introduced here has great potential for application in the preparation of drug carriers.

Highly efficient and selective removal of anionic dyes from aqueous solutions using polyacrylamide/peach gum polysaccharide/attapulgite composite hydrogels with positively charged hybrid network

To avoid the weakness (lower adsorption rate and selectivity) of peach gum polysaccharide (PGP) and improve the adsorption performance of polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel (lower adsorption capacity), in the present work, the PGP was chemically tailored to afford ammoniated PGP (APGP) and quaternized PGP (QPGP), and attapulgite (ATP) was bi-functionalized with cation groups and carbon‑carbon double bond. Then, PAAm/APGP and PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogels were synthesized via redox polymerization. The synthesis procedure and properties of hydrogels were traced by FTIR, SEM, XPS, TGA, TEM, and BET methods, and the dye adsorption performance of the hydrogels was evaluated using the new coccine (NC) and tartrazine (TTZ) aqueous solutions as the model anionic dyes. Effects of initial dye concentration, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption were investigated. Compared with PAAm/APGP hydrogel, PAAm/APGP/ATP hydrogel exhibits higher adsorption rate, superior adsorption capacity, stability, and selectivity towards anionic dye. The adsorption process of PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogel reached equilibrium in about 20 min and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption capacities towards NC and TTZ of PAAm/QPGP/ATP hydrogel were calculated as 873.235 and 731.432 mg/g. This hydrogel adsorbent originating from PAAm, PGP, and ATP shows great promise for application in practical water treatment.

Fabrication of maleic anhydride-acrylamide copolymer based sodium alginate hydrogel for elimination of metals ions and dyes contaminants from polluted water

The study explores the synergy of biobased polymers and hydrogels for water purification. Polymer nanomaterial's, synthesized by combining acrylamide copolymer with maleic anhydride, were integrated into sodium alginate biopolymer using an eco-friendly approach. Crosslinking agents, calcium chloride and glutaraladehyde, facilitated seamless integration, ensuring non-toxicity, high adsorption performance, and controlled capacity. This innovative combination presents a promising solution for clean and healthy water supplies, addressing the critical need for sustainable environmental practices in water purification. In addition, the polymer sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) underwent characterization via the use of several analytical procedures, such as FTIR, XPS, SEM, EDX and XRD. Adsorption studies were conducted on metals and dyes in water, and pollutant removal methods were explored. We investigated several variables (such as pH, starting concentration, duration, and absorbent quantity) affect a material's capacity to be adsorbed. Moreover, the maximum adsorption towards Cu2+ is 754 mg/g while for Cr6+ metal ions are 738 mg/g, while the adsorption towards Congo Red and Methylene Blue dye are 685 mg/g and 653 mg/g correspondingly, within 240 min. Adsorption results were further analyzed using kinetic and isothermal models, which showed that MAH@AA-P/SA/H adsorption is governed by a chemisorption process. Hence, the polymer prepared from sodium alginate hydrogel (MAH@AA-P/SA/H) has remarkable properties as a versatile material for the significantly elimination of harmful contaminants from dirty water.

Preparation and application of the thermo-/pH-/ ion-sensitive semi-IPN hydrogel based on chitosan

Chitosan based hydrogels with multiple stimulus responses have broad application prospects in many fields. Considering the advantages of semi interpenetrating network (IPN) technology and the special temperature and ion responsiveness of polymers containing zwitterionic groups, a semi-IPN hydrogel was prepared through in situ free radical polymerization of N,N-dimethyl acrylamide and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide with polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker and carboxymethyl chitosan as filler. The gel mass fraction and swelling ratio were measured, and the preparation conditions were optimized. The result indicated that the hydrogel possessed a unique thermo-/pH-/ ion-sensitive behavior. The swelling ratio increased with the increase of temperature and ion concentration, and showed a decreasing trend with the increase in pH. In addition, the hydrogel was stable when the stimuli changed. Adsorption behavior of the hydrogel to Eosin Y (EY) was systematically investigated. The adsorption process can be described well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that it was a chemical adsorption. The experiments indicated that the hydrogel exhibited good antifouling and reusability features. Therefore, the semi-IPN hydrogel with antifouling properties and thermo-/pH-/ion-sensitivity can be easily manufactured is expected to find applications in water treatment fields.

Synthesis and Applications of Hybrid Polymer Networks Based on Renewable Natural Macromolecules

Macromolecules obtained from renewable natural sources are gaining increasing attention as components for a vast variety of sustainable polymer-based materials. Natural raw materials can facilitate continuous-flow production due to their year-round availability and short replenishment period. They also open new opportunities for chemists and biologists to design and create "bioreplacement" and "bioadvantaged" polymers, where complex structures produced by nature are being modified, upgraded, and utilized to create novel materials. Bio-based macromonomers are expected not only to compete with but to replace some petroleum-based analogs, as well. The development of novel sustainable materials is an ongoing and very dynamic process. There are multiple strategies for transforming natural macromolecules into sophisticated value-added products. Some methods include chemical modification of macromolecules, while others include blending several components into one new system. One of the most promising approaches for incorporating renewable macromolecules into new products is the synthesis of hybrid networks based on one or more natural components. Each one has unique characteristics, so its incorporation into a network brings new sustainable materials with properties that can be tuned according to their end-use. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art and future potential of renewable natural macromolecules as sustainable building blocks for the synthesis and use of hybrid polymer networks. The most recent advancements and applications that involve polymers, such as cellulose, chitin, alginic acid, gellan gum, lignin, and their derivatives, are discussed.

Facile fabrication of a broad-spectrum starch/poly(α-l-lysine) hydrogel adsorbent with thermal/pH-sensitive IPN structure through simultaneous dual-click strategy

A thermal/pH-sensitive interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel was prepared facilely from starch and poly(α-l-lysine) through amino-anhydride and azide-alkyne double-click reactions in one pot. The synthesized polymers and hydrogels were systematically characterized using different analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and rheometer. The preparation conditions of the IPN hydrogel were optimized via one-factor experiments. Experimental results indicated the IPN hydrogel possessed pH and temperature sensitivity. Effect of different parameters (pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration, ionic strength, and temperature) on adsorption behavior were investigated in monocomponent system with cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic Eosin Y (EY) as model pollutants. The results indicated that the adsorption process of the IPN hydrogel for MB and EY followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption data for MB and EY fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating monolayer chemisorption. The good adsorption performance was due to various active functional groups (-COOH, -OH, -NH₂, etc.) in the IPN hydrogel. The strategy described here opens up a new way for preparing IPN hydrogel. The as-prepared hydrogel exhibits potential application and bright prospects as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

Responsive Hydrogels Based on Triggered Click Reactions for Liver Cancer

Globally, liver cancer, which is one of the major cancers worldwide, has attracted the growing attention of technological researchers for its high mortality and limited treatment options. Hydrogels are soft 3D network materials containing a large number of hydrophilic monomers. By adding moieties such as nitrobenzyl groups to the network structure of a cross-linked nanocomposite hydrogel, the click reaction improves drug-release efficiency in vivo, which improves the survival rate and prolongs the survival time of liver cancer patients. The application of a nanocomposite hydrogel drug delivery system can not only enrich the drug concentration at the tumor site for a long time but also effectively prevents the distant metastasis of residual tumor cells. At present, a large number of researches have been working toward the construction of responsive nanocomposite hydrogel drug delivery systems, but there are few comprehensive articles to systematically summarize these discoveries. Here, this systematic review summarizes the synthesis methods and related applications of nanocomposite responsive hydrogels with actions to external or internal physiological stimuli. With different physical or chemical stimuli, the structural unit rearrangement and the controlled release of drugs can be used for responsive drug delivery in different states.

Novel Trends in Hydrogel Development for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Nowadays, there are still numerous challenges for well-known biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering (TE), wound healing and controlled drug delivery, which must be faced and solved. Hydrogels have been proposed as excellent candidates for these applications, as they have promising properties for the mentioned applications, including biocompatibility, biodegradability, great absorption capacity and tunable mechanical properties. However, depending on the material or the manufacturing method, the resulting hydrogel may not be up to the specific task for which it is designed, thus there are different approaches proposed to enhance hydrogel performance for the requirements of the application in question. The main purpose of this review article was to summarize the most recent trends of hydrogel technology, going through the most used polymeric materials and the most popular hydrogel synthesis methods in recent years, including different strategies of enhancing hydrogels’ properties, such as cross-linking and the manufacture of composite hydrogels. In addition, the secondary objective of this review was to briefly discuss other novel applications of hydrogels that have been proposed in the past few years which have drawn a lot of attention.
