Sustainable production of cellulosic biopolymers for enhanced smart food packaging: An up-to-date review

Biodegradable and sustainable food packaging (FP) materials have gained immense global importance to reduce plastic pollution and environmental impact. Therefore, this review focused on the recent advances in biopolymers based on cellulose derivatives for FP applications. Cellulose, an abundant and renewable biopolymer, and its various derivatives, namely cellulose acetate, cellulose sulphate, nanocellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, and methylcellulose, are explored as promising substitutes for conventional plastic in FP. These reviews focused on the production, modification processes, and properties of cellulose derivatives and highlighted their potential for their application in FP. Finally, we reviewed the effects of incorporating cellulose derivatives into film in various aspects of packaging properties, including barrier, mechanical, thermal, preservation aspects, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Overall, the findings suggest that cellulose derivatives have the potential to replace conventional plastics in food packaging applications. This can contribute to reducing plastic pollution and lessening the environmental impact of food packaging materials. The review likely provides insights into the current state of research and development in this field and underscores the significance of sustainable food packaging solutions.

Properties and environmental sustainability of fungal chitin nanofibril reinforced cellulose acetate films and nanofiber mats by solution blow spinning

Materials from biological origin composed by renewable carbon facilitate the transition from linear carbon-intensive economy to a sustainable circular economy. Accordingly, we use solution blow spinning to develop fully biobased cellulose acetate films and nanofiber mats reinforced with fungal chitin nanofibrils (ChNFs), an emerging bio-colloid with lower carbon footprint compared to crustacean-derived nanochitin. This study incorporates fungal ChNFs into spinning processes for the first time. ChNF addition reduces film surface roughness, modifies film water affinity, and tailors the nanofiber diameter of the mats. The covalently bonded β-D-glucans of ChNFs act as a binder to improve the interfacial properties and consequently load transference to enhance the mechanical properties. Accordingly, the Young's modulus of the films increases from 200 ± 18 MPa to 359 ± 99 MPa with 1.5 wt% ChNFs, while the elongation at break increases by ~45 %. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is applied to quantify the environmental impacts of solution blow spinning for the first time, providing global warming potential values of 69.7-347.4 kg·CO2-equiv.·kg-1. Additionally, this work highlights the suitability of ChNFs as reinforcing fillers during spinning and proves the reinforcing effect of mushroom-derived chitin in bio-based films, opening alternatives for sustainable materials development beyond nanocelluloses in the near future.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel with high-density crack microstructures inspired from the multi-tentacles of octopus for ultrasensitive flexible sensing microsystem

Constructing high-density contact-separation sites on conductive materials highly determines the sensitivity of flexible resistance-type sensors relying on the crack microstructures. Herein, inspired from the multiple-tentacle structures on octopus, we demonstrated a sort of novel carbonized ZIF-8@loofah (CZL) as conductive material to develop ultrasensitivity flexible sensor, in which the carbonized ZIF-8 nanoparticles (~100 nm) served as tentacles. Originating from the formation of high-density contact-separation sites, the fabricated CZL-based strain sensor delivered ultrahigh sensitivity of GFmax = 15,901, short response time of 22 ms and excellent durability over 10,000 cycles. These features enable the sensor with efficient monitoring capacity for complex human activities, such as pulse rate and phonation. Moreover, when CZL was assembled into triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), CZL-based TENG can effectively convert the irregular biomechanical energy into electric energy, providing sustainable power supply for the continuous operation of the sensing micro-system. Our findings established a novel platform to develop high-performance self-powered sensing systems of physiological parameter of human inspired from the nature.

Ammonia-sensitive cellulose acetate-based films incorporated with Co-BIT microcrystals for smart packaging application

Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for smart packaging materials capable of effectively monitoring the food freshness. In this study, new Co-based MOF (Co-BIT) microcrystals with ammonia-sensitivity and antibacterial function were constructed and then loaded within cellulose acetate (CA) matrix to create smart active packaging materials. The influences of Co-BIT loading upon structure, physical, and functional properties of the CA films were then thoroughly explored. It was observed that microcrystalline Co-BIT was uniformly integrated inside CA matrix, which caused significant promotions in mechanical strength (from 24.12 to 39.76 MPa), water barrier (from 9.32 × 10^-6 to 2.73 × 10^-6 g/m·h·Pa) and ultraviolet light protection performances of CA film. Additionally, the created CA/Co-BIT films displayed striking antibacterial efficacy (>95.0 % for both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus), favorable ammonia-sensitivity function as well as color stability. Finally, the CA/Co-BIT films were successfully applied for indicating the spoilage of shrimp through discernible color changes. These findings suggest that Co-BIT loaded CA composite films have great potential for use as smart active packaging.

Enhancing the solubility and antimicrobial activity of cellulose through esterification modification using amino acid hydrochlorides

Most amino acid molecules have good water solubility and are rich in functional groups, which makes them a promising derivatizing agent for cellulose. However, self-condensation of amino acids and low reaction efficiency always happen during esterification. Here, amino acid hydrochloride ([AA]Cl) is selected as raw material to synthesize cellulose amino acid ester (CAE). Based on TG-MS coupling technology, a significantly faster reaction rate of [AA]Cl compared to raw amino acid can be observed visually. CAE with the degree of substitution 0.412-0.516 is facilely synthesized under 130-170 °C for 10-50 min. Moreover, the effects of amounts of [AA]Cl agent, temperature, and time on the esterification are studied. The CAE can be well dissolved in 7 wt% NaOH aq., resulting in a 7.5 wt% dope. The rheological test of the dope demonstrated a shear-thinning behavior for Newtonian-like fluid, and a high gel temperature (41.7 °C). Further, the synthesized products show distinct antibacterial activity and the bacteriostatic reduction rate against E. coli can reach 99.5 %.

High-performance carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel film for food packaging and preservation system

Most traditional food packaging and preservation films suffer from limited stretchability and relatively simple functionality, which severely restricts their practical application. In this study, a highly stretchable and versatile sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/poly(ethylene imine) (PEI)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel film was elaborately designed and demonstrated as an efficient food packaging and preservation system. The dynamic reversible non-covalent within three-dimensional (3D) network structures served as sacrificial bonds to dissipate the loaded energy and endowed the hydrogel film with excellent elongation ~400 %, which is much larger than that of conventional food packaging films (<50 %). Furthermore, the optimized CMC/PVA/PEI/TA₃ hydrogel film delivers versatile performances, including self-healing, whole UV-blocking (<400 nm), strong adhesive strength (234.08 KPa), antioxidation virtues, oxygen barrier (32.64 cm³*μm/(m²*d*KPa)) and water vapor barrier (642.92 g/(m²*24 h)). Notably, the shelf life of fresh strawberries, mangoes, and cherries was prolonged by at least one week under ambient conditions when the packaging box was covered by the fabricated CMC/PVA/PEI/TA₃ film. Thus, our work not only provides a highly stretchable and versatile hydrogel film but also boosts the in-depth comprehension and rational design of robust food packaging and preservation films.
