Cellulose-Reinforced Polylactic Acid Composites for Three-Dimensional Printing Using Polyethylene Glycol as an Additive: A Comprehensive Review

Growing concerns about environmental issues and global warming have garnered increased attention in recent decades. Consequently, the use of materials sourced from renewable and biodegradable origins, produced sustainably, has piqued the interest of scientific researchers. Biodegradable and naturally derived polymers, such as cellulose and polylactic acid (PLA), have consistently been the focus of scientific investigation. The objective is to develop novel materials that could potentially replace conventional petroleum-based polymers, offering specific properties tailored for diverse applications while upholding principles of sustainability and technology as well as economic viability. Against this backdrop, the aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in research concerning the use of polylactic acid (PLA) and the incorporation of cellulose as a reinforcing agent within this polymeric matrix, alongside the application of 3D printing technology. Additionally, a pivotal additive in the combination of PLA and cellulose, polyethylene glycol (PEG), is explored. A systematic review of the existing literature related to the combination of these materials (PLA, cellulose, and PEG) and 3D printing was conducted using the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The outcomes of this search are presented through a comparative analysis of diverse studies, encompassing aspects such as the scale and cellulose amount added into the PLA matrix, modifications applied to cellulose surfaces, the incorporation of additives or compatibilizing agents, variations in molecular weight and in the quantity of PEG introduced into the PLA/cellulose (nano)composites, and the resulting impact of these variables on the properties of these materials.

Chitin and Chitosan Binding to the α-Chitin Crystal: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Understanding the binding of chitosan oligomers to the surface of a chitin nanocrystal is important for improving the enzymatic deacetylation of chitin and for the design of chitin/chitosan composite films. Here, we study the binding of several chito-oligomers to the (100) surface of an α-chitin crystal using molecular dynamics (MD), steered MD, and umbrella sampling. The convergence of the free energy was carefully considered and yielded a binding energies of -12.5 and -2 kcal mol^-1 for 6-monomer-long chitin and uncharged chitosan oligomers, respectively. We also found that the results for the umbrella sampling were consistent with the force profile from the steered MD and with classical MD simulations of the adsorption process. Our results give insight into the molecular-scale interactions, which can be helpful for the design of new chitin composite films. Furthermore, the free energy curves we present can be used to validate coarse-grained models for chitin and chitosan, which are necessary to study the self-assembly of chitin crystals due to the long time scale of the process.

A new class of nucleating agents for poly(L-lactic acid): Environmentally-friendly metal salts with biomass-derived ligands and advanced nucleation ability

Adding nucleating agents has been a successful strategy to boost the heat resistance of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) by increasing the crystallinity. In this study, a new series of bio-based complexes as nucleating agents for PLLA, including twelve combinations of three eco-friendly metal ions (Zn, Mg, Ca) and four biomass-derived α-hydroxy acids, were successfully synthesized to respectively investigate the effects of metal ions as well as ligands on nucleation capacity of complexes. By investigating the non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization at 135 °C of PLLA with 0.3 wt% loading of complexes, both zinc and magnesium salts of L-mandelic acid showed excellent nucleation capacities. And magnesium L-mandelate performed better, raising the crystallinity of PLLA to 44.4 % as well as minimizing its crystallization half-time from 73 min to 2.7 min. The growth and denser distribution of PLLA spherulites on the salt surface were also observed by POM, reflecting epitaxial nucleation as the possible mechanism. A novel inspiration, utilizing VESTA software to simulate the crystal structure of zinc L-mandelate (Zn(L-MA)₂), was proposed to determine the nucleation mechanism. Also, using polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a test protocol, the rationality of the model could be approved by checking the fitness of nucleating prediction and experiment results.
