Nanocellulose-Based Hybrid Scaffolds for Skin and Bone Tissue Engineering: A 10-Year Overview

Cellulose, the most abundant polymer on Earth, has been widely utilized in its nanoform due to its excellent properties, finding applications across various scientific fields. As the demand for nanocellulose continues to rise and its ease of use becomes apparent, there has been a significant increase in research publications centered on this biomaterial. Nanocellulose, in its different forms, has shown tremendous promise as a tissue engineered scaffold for regeneration and repair. Particularly, nanocellulose-based composites and scaffolds have emerged as highly demanding materials for both soft and hard tissue engineering. Medical practitioners have traditionally relied on collagen and its analogue, gelatin, for treating tissue damage. However, the limited mechanical strength of these biopolymers restricts their direct use in various applications. This issue can be overcome by making hybrids of these biopolymers with nanocellulose. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of the recent and most relevant publications focusing on hybrid composites of collagen and gelatin with a specific emphasis on their combination with nanocellulose. While bone and skin tissue engineering represents two areas where a majority of researchers are concentrating their efforts, this review highlights the use of nanocellulose-based hybrids in these contexts.

Nanocellulose: Structure, modification, biodegradation and applications in agriculture as slow/controlled release fertilizer, superabsorbent, and crop protection: A review

This review investigates the potential of nanocellulose in agriculture, encompassing its structure, synthesis, modification, and applications. Our investigation of the characteristics of nanocellulose includes a comprehensive classification of its structure. Various mechanical, chemical and enzymatic synthesis techniques are evaluated, each offering distinct possibilities. The central role of surface functionalization is thoroughly examined. In particular, we are evaluating the conventional production of nanocellulose, thus contributing to the novelty. This review is a pioneering effort to comprehensively explore the use of nanocellulose in slow and controlled release fertilizers, revolutionizing nutrient management and improving crop productivity with reduced environmental impact. Additionally, our work uniquely integrates diverse applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, ranging from slow-release fertilizers, superabsorbent cellulose hydrogels for drought stress mitigation, and long-lasting crop protection via nanocellulose-based seed coatings. The study ends by identifying challenges and unexplored opportunities in the use of nanocellulose in agriculture. This review makes an innovative contribution by being the first comprehensive study to examine the multiple applications of nanocellulose in agriculture, including slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers.

Fabrication of a Nanosized g-C3N4-Loaded Cellulose Microfiber Bundle to Induce Highly Efficient Water Treatment via Photodegradation

Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with a suitable structure and strong amine activity is designed and prepared to serve as a hydrogen bond donor for the microfibrilization of corncob cellulose to form a cellulose microfiber (CMF) bundle. Simultaneously, well-dispersed nanosized g-C3N4 is loaded into the bundle to form a photocatalyst for efficient photodegradation of rhodamine B (Rh B) in water. Under the optimal preparation conditions at 165 °C, 10 min, and 0.08 mol/L H2SO4, the yield of g-C3N4-functionalized cellulose microfibers (CMF-g-C3N4) reaches to the highest over 70%. The catalytic rate of CMF-g-C3N4 is 3.3 times larger than that of pure g-C3N4. The degradation rate of Rh B is maintained at over 90% in 10 cycles of photocatalytic degradation. The obtained CMF-g-C3N4 also has good thermal stability and mechanical properties. This research suggests a particularly simple way to transform cellulose into a highly efficient photocatalyst for water treatment.

Advances in the use of cellulose-based proton exchange membranes in fuel cell technology: A review

Fuel cells are electrochemical, ecologically friendly appliances that transform chemical energy into electricity in a clean, simple, and effective manner. With the advancement of technology in the field of computer science, electronic downsizing, and the ongoing need for mobility, the demand for portable energy sources such as fuel cells has considerably increased. The proton exchange membrane, which is designed to be a good conductor for protons while isolating electrons to move from the anode to the cathode, imprinting them an external circuit, and thus creating electricity, is at the heart of such an energy source. Perfluorosulfonic acid-based (NAFION) membranes, first introduced over 50 years ago, are still the state of the art in the field of fuel cell proton exchange membranes today. However, because of the numerous drawbacks connected with the usage of NAFION membranes, the scientific community has shifted its focus to producing new generation membranes based on natural materials, such as cellulose. Therefore, we believe that a review of the most recent studies on the use of cellulose as a material for proton exchange membranes in fuel cells may be very much appreciated by the scientific community.

Effects of nanocellulose combined with high pressure on the textural, structural, and gel properties of Nemipterus virgatus sausage

This study aimed to improve the gel quality of golden threadfin bream (Nemipterus virgatus) sausage by adding sugarcane nanocellulose (SNC) and using high pressure combined with a two-stage heat treatment. The gel strength, textural properties, protein secondary structure, water states, and microstructure were analyzed and compared. The results indicated that the heat treatment was beneficial to stabilizing the protein gel structure, increasing the gel strength and textural quality, and reducing the cooking loss. High-pressure treatment resulted in a decrease of α-helix and an increase of β-sheet in the protein, forming a dense gel structure, which enhanced the gel strength and the percentage of bound water. The superior hydrophilicity of nanocellulose and its cross-linking with protein increased the percentage of bound water in the gel, which improved the water-holding capacity and mechanical properties. Therefore, the best gel quality was obtained by adding nanocellulose and treating it with high pressure combined with two-stage heating.

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents in the Synthesis of Inorganic Nanoparticles

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NDESs), as a new type of green solvent, are used in many fields, including industry in extraction processes, medicine, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, electrodeposition, separations, gas capture, biocatalysis and nanotechnology. Mainly due to their properties, such as simple preparation, environmental friendliness, biocompatibility and multifunctionality, they are being used in various fields of industry. This review aims to provide insight into the applications of natural deep eutectic solvents, specifically in nanotechnology processes. It focuses on the description of NDES and how their physicochemical properties are used to obtain functional nanomaterials, including metals, metal oxides and salts. It highlights how the use of NDESs to obtain a wide range of inorganic nanoparticles enables the elimination of disadvantages of traditional methods of obtaining them, including reducing energy consumption and functionalising nanoparticles in situ. In conclusion, recent advances and future directions in the development and applications of NDESs in nanotechnology are discussed with the aim of identifying unexplained scientific questions that can be investigated in the future.

A fungal cellulose nanocrystals-based approach to improve the stability of triterpenes loaded Pickering emulsion

Depolysaccharide residues of edible fungus Pleurotus eryngii (dePSR-Pe), a mushroom industry waste, have abundant cellulose. In this study, the cellulose nanocrystals of P. eryngii (PeCNs) were extracted by hydrochloric acid. Results showed that the length of PeCNs is 469 ± 76.41 nm with a high aspect ratio of 40-100 and needle morphology. The structural characterization revealed that PeCNs had good thermal stability (approach 300 °C) and high crystallinity (84.2 %). An O/W Pickering emulsion stabilized with PeCNs was prepared to inhibit lipid oxidation and improve the loading capacity of triterpenes of P. coco. Unimodal size distribution of emulsion droplets was obtained under an optimized aqueous-phase condition to form a metastable emulsion, regardless of varying oil-water volume ratio <50/50. In vitro digestion study suggested that triterpenes-loaded Pickering emulsion had 1-3 times higher drug stability than bulk oil. These metastable Pickering emulsions call for fewer nanoparticles and provide a new strategy for the industry application of cellulose nanocrystals at less cost.
