Designed synthesis of multifunctional lignin-based adsorbent for efficient heavy metal ions removal and electromagnetic wave absorption

Efficiency of magnesium oxide nanoparticle in contaminants removal from environmental water samples: Optimization through central composite design

This experimental study was conducted to synthesize magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles and investigate their efficiency in removing arsenic, brilliant cresyl blue, and neutral red from aqueous solutions. The MgO nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analyses. The results revealed that the synthesized MgO nanoparticles had a spherical structure with an estimated average size of approximately 30 nm. The influence of solution pH, concentration, adsorbent amount, type of eluent, and interference of interfering ions was examined and optimized for removing arsenic, brilliant cresyl blue, and neutral red. The optimal conditions for the removal process were determined as pH of 7, MgO amount of 0.037 g, ultrasonication time of 16 min, and concentration of 25 mg L-1. The experimental removal efficiencies of arsenic, brilliant cresyl blue, and neutral red in aqueous samples ranged from 88.49% to 96.03%. The results of eluent selection showed that ethanol had the highest removal efficiency of analytes from the absorbent surface. The reusability of the MgO adsorbent demonstrated its effective use for the continuous removal of arsenic, brilliant cresyl blue, and neutral red for at least four consecutive cycles. Overall, the results suggest that MgO nanoparticles could be an effective and cost-efficient adsorbent for removing arsenic, brilliant cresyl blue, and neutral red from real samples.

Exploring chemical reactions to enhance thermal and dispersion stability of kraft and organosolv lignin

Lignin has been overlooked and used as a waste for long due to its complex and partially hydrophobic structure. Many efforts have been carried out to overcome these deficiencies and apply it as a high-value product, which are insufficient to reach the full potential of lignin in various advanced applications, since they require with procedures for the obtaining of more specific and fine-tuned chemical structures. This work focuses on the obtaining of differently structured hydrophilic lignins derived both from Kraft and organosolv isolation processes. The chemical structures of the different lignin types were studied, and the effect of the structural differences in the modification processes and their subsequent properties analyzed, valorizing their potential application for diverse purposes. The carboxymethylation and sulfomethylation reactions were carried out with the aim of enhancing the polarity of the lignin samples, while the methylation reaction aimed to obtain lignins with higher stability. The physicochemical analyses of the samples, carried out by FTIR, GPC, 31P NMR, 13C NMR, and HSQC NMR, verified the effectiveness of the chemical reactions and conditions selected, obtaining lignins with lower hydroxyl content, due to their substitution and insertion of carboxymetyl, sulfomethyl and methyl groups, therefore obtaining more condensed, aromatic and oxygenated aromatic carbon structures. While the methylation reaction was the most efficient in substituting the OH groups, due to its non-selectivity, OL showed higher modification yields than KL. In terms of the thermal and morphological properties, analyzed by DLS and TGA respectively, it was observed that the modified samples showed lower Z potential values, along with higher conductivity, being the sulfomethylated organosolv lignin the one showing the best results, which was also the one with the smallest particle size and polydispersity index. Finally, all the modified samples showed higher T50% values, suggesting a better stability towards degradation.

In-situ preparation of lignin/Fe3O4 magnetic spheres as bifunctional material for the efficient removal of metal ions and methylene blue

In this paper, magnetic composite of lignin/Fe3O4 spheres were synthesized via a straightforward one-step in-situ solvothermal method showing good capacity for adsorbing heavy metal ions and dyes. The physicochemical properties of lignin/Fe3O4 spheres are analyzed using a range of techniques such as SEM, XRD, FTIR, VSM, TG, and BET. Lignin/Fe3O4 spheres exhibited high adsorption capacities of 100.00, 353.36 and 223.71 and 180.18 mg/g for Cu (II), Ni (II) and Cr (VI) metal ions and methylene blue (MB) with equilibrium attained within 60 min. After the recycling experiments, lignin/Fe3O4 spheres still possesses excellent superparamagnetic properties and displays high adsorption capacity. The lignin/Fe3O4 spheres are an efficient and continuous adsorbent to remove heavy metal ions of Cu (II), Ni (II), Cr (VI) and cationic dyes of methylene blue in wastewater, which proves the great potential in practical pollutants treatment applications for water systems.

Design and function of lignin/silk fibroin-based multilayer water purification membranes for dye adsorption

The treatment of dye wastewater poses a significant challenge to the sewage recycling industries. However, the reduction of secondary pollution resulting from the membrane residues, to maintain high performance, remains a considerable obstacle. A novel approach for the fabrication of multilayer nanofiber structures using a layer-by-layer electrostatic spinning technique with biological materials was reported in this study. Incorporating the chemical adsorption advantages of lignin nanofiber and the physical adsorption advantages of silk fibroin (SF) nanofiber enabled the full realization of excellent dye interception performance. A comparative analysis was conducted on the lignin derived from eucalyptus, pine, and straw to determine the most suitable option. Notably, eucalyptus lignin exhibited superior antimicrobial properties. The adsorption of crystal violet by eucalyptus lignin/SF membrane was consistent with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, revealing a chemisorption mechanism involving Π-Π conjugation, hydrogen bonding, and the binding of anions and cations. The lignin/SF membrane exhibited a retention rate exceeding 99.5 % for crystal violet, methylene blue, and brilliant green dyes. Furthermore, it demonstrated efficacy in retaining heavy metal ions, including cadmium and copper. The original biomass material imparts the property of rapid degradation to a multilayer membrane that can be used as an effective and eco-friendly water purification material.

High efficient adsorption of W(VI) with a novel lignin-based biosorbent functionalized with Zn2+ and polyamine

Functionalized lignin-based biosorbent has become popular in wastewater treatment and extraction of valuable metals. Amination and metallization modification can effectively improve the adsorption performance of adsorbent. Zn2+/polyamine lignin for adsorption of W(VI) was synthesized by quaternization, amination and metallization from lignin with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride, tetraethylenepentamine and ZnCl2. The adsorbent was characterized by SEM-EDS, FTIR and XRD. The adsorption performance of Zn2+/polyamine lignin for W(VI) was investigated in batch system. The adsorption mechanism was revealed by zeta potential, SEM-EDS and FTIR and XPS. It was shown that Zn2+/polyamine lignin exhibited great adsorption capacity at pH of 2, 25 °C, oscillation rate of 400 r/min, initial tungsten concentration of 700 mg·L-1 and adsorption time of 720 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of 0.5 g·L-1 Zn2+/polyamine lignin for W(VI) reached 488.28 mg·g-1. The adsorption followed Langmuir model and quasi-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption was monolayer homogeneous chemisorption. W(VI) was adsorbed through electrostatic attraction of hydrogen bond and Zn2+, ion exchange with Cl- and coordination with -NH2. The adsorption capacity reduced by only 6.47 % after seven cycles of adsorption-desorption, which indicated that Zn2+/polyamine lignin had a great application prospect.

N-S co-doping lignin-based carbon magnetic nanoparticles as high performance supercapacitor and electromagnetic wave absorber

Recently, multifunctional lignin-based materials are gaining more and more attention due to their great potential for low-cost and sustainability. In this work, to obtain both an excellent supercapacitor electrode and an outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber, a series of multifunctional nitrogen-sulphur (N-S) co-doped lignin-based carbon magnetic nanoparticles (LCMNPs) had been successfully prepared through Mannich reaction at different carbonization temperature. As compared with the directly carbonized lignin carbon (LC), LCMNPs had more nano-size structure and higher specific surface area. Meanwhile, with the increase of carbonization temperature, the graphitization of the LCMNPs could also be effectively improved. Therefore, LCMNPs-800 displayed the best performance advantages. For the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), the optimal specific capacitance of LCMNPs-800 reached 154.2 F/g, and the capacitance retention after 5000 cycles was as high as 98.14 %. When the power density was 2204.76 W/kg, the energy density achieved 33.81 Wh/kg. In addition, N-S co-doped LCMNPs also exhibited strong electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) ability, whose the minimum reflection loss (RL) value of LCMNPs-800 was realized -46.61 dB at 6.01 GHz with an thickness of 4.0 mm, and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) was up to 2.11 GHz ranging from 5.10 to 7.21 GHz, which could cover the C-band. Overall, this green and sustainable approach is a promising strategy for the preparation of high-performance multifunctional lignin-based materials.
