Magnetic chitosan/calcium alginate double-network hydrogel beads: Preparation, adsorption of anionic and cationic surfactants, and reuse in the removal of methylene blue

Biopolymer-based beads for the adsorptive removal of organic pollutants from wastewater: Current state and future perspectives

Among biopolymer-based adsorbents, composites in the form of beads have shown promising results in terms of high adsorption capacity and ease of separation from the effluents. This review addresses the potential of biopolymer-based beads to remediate wastewaters polluted with emerging organic contaminants, for instance dyes, active pharmaceutical ingredients, pesticides, phenols, oils, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls. High adsorption capacities up to 2541.76 mg g-1 for dyes, 392 mg g-1 for pesticides and phenols, 1890.3 mg g-1 for pharmaceuticals, and 537 g g-1 for oils and organic solvents have been reported. The review also attempted to convey to its readers the significance of wastewater treatment through adsorption by providing an overview on decontamination technologies of organic water contaminants. Various preparation methods of biopolymer-based gel beads and adsorption mechanisms involved in the process of decontamination have been summarized and analyzed. Therefore, we believe there is an urge to discuss the current state of the application of biopolymer-based gel beads for the adsorption of organic pollutants from wastewater and future perspectives in this regard since it is imperative to treat wastewater before releasing into freshwater bodies.

Anionic dye removal by immobilized bacteria into alginate-polyvinyl alcohol-bentonite matrix

Methyl orange (MO) is commonly used in the textile dyeing industry, posing serious health and environmental hazards due to its carcinogenic, mutagenic properties, and potential for bioaccumulation. Appropriate handling is needed to solve these problems by harnessing the capacity of living microorganisms and the adsorption properties of bentonite clay minerals. Although the conventional approach predominantly depends on free cells, recent study has developed other methods such as immobilization techniques. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the efficiency of the immobilization matrix comprising sodium alginate (SA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and bentonite by modifying Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Ralstonia pickettii for MO removal of 50 mg/L. In the free cell technique, the results showed that the MO decreased to 43.13, 36.61, and 27.45% for each of the bacteria within 10 days at 35 °C. The bacterial immobilization technique, including live immobilized P. aeruginosa (LIPa), live immobilized B. subtilis (LIBs), and live immobilized R. pickettii (LIRp) beads also demonstrated significant efficiency, achieving MO removal rates up to 97.15, 95.65, and 66.63% within 10 days. These synthesized beads showed reusability, with LIPa, LIBs, and LIRp being used up to 4, 4, and 2 cycles, respectively. The external and internal surface conditions were observed using SEM instrument and the results showed that all components were agglomerated. Comparisons using dead bacterial biomass indicated that treatment with live bacteria consistently yielded significantly higher removal rates. These results showed the effectiveness of immobilized bacteria in MO removal, offering a promising potential in reducing pollutants.

Adsorption of cationic/anionic dyes and endocrine disruptors by yeast/cyclodextrin polymer composites

Factory and natural wastewaters contain a wide range of organic pollutants. Therefore, multifunctional adsorbents must be developed that can purify wastewater. Phytic acid-cross-linked Baker's yeast cyclodextrin polymer composites (IBY-PA-CDP) were prepared using a one-pot method. IBY-PA-CDP was used to adsorb methylene blue (MB), bisphenol A (BPA), and methyl orange (MO). Studies on the ionic strength and strongly acidic ion salts confirmed that IBY-PA-CDP adsorbs MO through hydrophobic interactions. This also shows that Na+ was the direct cause of the increased MO removal. Adsorption studies on binary systems showed that MB/MO inhibited the adsorption of BPA by IBY-PA-CDP. The presence of MB increased the removal rate of MO by IBY-PA-CDP due to the bridging effect. The Langmuir isotherm model calculated the maximum adsorption capacities for MB and BPA to be 630.96 and 83.31 mg g-1, respectively. However, the Freundlich model is more suitable for fitting the experimental data for MO adsorption. To understand the rate-limiting stage of adsorption, a mass-transfer mechanism model was employed. The fitting results show that adsorption onto the active sites is the rate-determining step. After five regeneration cycles, IBY-PA-CDP could be reused with good stability and recyclability.

Chitosan-alginate sponge with multiple cross-linking networks for adsorption of anionic dyes: Preparation, property evaluation, mechanism exploration, and application

A chitosan-alginate sponge (CAS) with multiple cross-linking networks was developed using chitosan, sodium alginate, polyvinyl alcohol, and glutaraldehyde to adsorb and enrich the anionic dyes form the food samples. The multiple networks in CAS refer to the electrostatic cross-linking network, hydrogen bonding cross-linking network, and covalent cross-linking network. Compared with pure chitosan and alginate sponges, the CAS showed better three-dimensional network structure, mechanical behavior, and stability, which is benefit by multiple cross-linking networks. The physical and chemical properties of CAS were systematically studied by a series of characterizations. The adsorption performance of CAS on anionic dyes was inspected with different dye concentration, time, temperature, and pH conditions. CAS exhibited a good and stable adsorption property to amaranth, carmine, and sunset yellow with the saturation adsorption capacity of 94.34, 111.5, and 80.05 mg∙g-1, respectively. Furthermore, CAS performed outstanding selectivity to anionic dyes with the selectivity factor up to 16.99. Through electrostatic potential analysis, it is inferred that CAS mainly adsorbs anionic dyes through electrostatic interactions. CAS showed satisfactory reusability, maintaining 97 %-99 % of adsorption performance after six cycles of recycling. Finally, CAS was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for the enrichment and detection of anionic dyes in candy and cocktail samples, achieving the enrichment factor up to 84.77.

Preparation of magnetic polyacrylamide hydrogel with chitosan for immobilization of glutamate decarboxylase to produce γ-aminobutyric acid

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an vital neurotransmitter, and the reaction to obtain GABA through biocatalysis requires coenzymes, which are therefore limited in the production of GABA. In this study, polyacrylamide hydrogels doped with chitosan and waste toner were synthesized for glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) and coenzyme co-immobilization to realize the production of GABA and the recovery of coenzymes. Enzymatic properties of immobilized GAD were discussed. The immobilized enzymes have significantly improved pH and temperature tolerance compared to free enzymes. In terms of reusability, after 10 repeated reuses of the immobilized GAD, the residual enzyme activity of immobilized GAD still retains 100% of the initial enzyme activity, and the immobilized coenzyme can also be kept at about 32%, with better stability and reusability. And under the control of no exogenous pH, immobilized GAD showed good performance in producing GABA. Therefore, in many ways, the new composite hydrogel provides another way for the utilization of waste toner and promises the possibility of industrial production of GABA.

Chitosan-based magnetic bioadsorbent beads from eucalyptus sawdust waste for the Direct Violet-51 dye remediation: Eco-friendly strategy and statistical optimization

In the present study, a new application was proposed for the eucalyptus sawdust waste, which is an environmental passive. Three adsorbent materials composed of chitosan (CS), sawdust (CSW), and magnetic beads (CSWF) were developed and used for the Direct Violet-51 remediation. The adsorption testes were optimized based on the variation of the adsorption parameters: (i) pH (2-12), (ii) contact time (5-60 min), (iii) initial dye concentration (10-60 mg L-1), (iv) adsorbent mass (10-100 mg) in 10 mL. The optimized conditions of the adsorption essays showed that the three synthesized adsorbents completely removed the dye from the aqueous medium, but under different experimental conditions. As the main findings in this study, we can highlight the excellent performance of CSW adsorbent material, which promoted maximum removal efficiency of Direct Violet-51 at neutral pH, which is of great importance for the industrial processes. On the other hand, CS and CSWF adsorbent materials exhibited a maximum adsorption efficiency at pH 2. Furthermore, the adsorbent materials were applied in the dye remediation in environmental water samples from the tap water, Marcela dam, and Poxim River, they did not suffer any major matrix interference, whose removal efficiency values varied between 99.8 and 100, 70.7-100, and 98.8-99.5 % for the CS, CSW, and CSWF, respectively. Finally, besides being materials produced from the waste, they can be reused more times, fitting into the concept of circular economy.

Chitosan Hydrogels for Water Purification Applications

Chitosan-based hydrogels have gained significant attention for their potential applications in water treatment and purification due to their remarkable properties such as bioavailability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmental friendliness, high pollutants adsorption capacity, and water adsorption capacity. This article comprehensively reviews recent advances in chitosan-based hydrogel materials for water purification applications. The synthesis methods, structural properties, and water purification performance of chitosan-based hydrogels are critically analyzed. The incorporation of various nanomaterials into chitosan-based hydrogels, such as nanoparticles, graphene, and metal-organic frameworks, has been explored to enhance their performance. The mechanisms of water purification, including adsorption, filtration, and antimicrobial activity, are also discussed in detail. The potential of chitosan-based hydrogels for the removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, organic contaminants, and microorganisms, from water sources is highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and future perspectives of chitosan-based hydrogels in water treatment and water purification applications are also illustrated. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into the current state of the art regarding chitosan-based hydrogels for water purification applications and highlights their potential for addressing global water pollution challenges.
