Efficient adsorption of azo anionic dye Congo Red by micro-nano metal-organic framework MIL-68(Fe) and MIL-68(Fe)/chitosan composite sponge: Preparation, characterization and adsorption performance

Development of amine-sensitive intelligent film with MIL-100(Fe) as function filler based on anthocyanins/pectin for monitoring chilled meat freshness

To enhance the amine-sensitivity of intelligent films for accurate monitoring of chilled meat freshness, different additions (0, 1, 2, 3 wt%) of MIL-100(Fe) were incorporated into the matrix composed of anthocyanins (ANs) and pectin (P). Results indicated that the tensile strength, thermal stability, barrier performance and absorption capacity of the films with MIL-100(Fe) were improved significantly (p < 0.05). Especially, the film with 2 % MIL-100(Fe) exhibited the best performance due to its compact structure and the highest crystallinity. Additionally, adsorption isotherms of the films with MIL-100(Fe) were fitted on the Langmuir and the Freundlich isotherm, and adsorption kinetics were fitted on the pseudo-second-order model and Elovich model, respectively (R2 > 0.96), suggesting a combined mechanism of chemisorption and intraparticle diffusion. Besides, when the films were exposed in ammonia environment, they changed color from purple to blue-violet, finally to green. Ultimately, film with 2 % MIL-100(Fe) was used to monitor the chilled meat freshness, as expected, similar color variation was observed at three stages of meat freshness (fresh, sub-fresh, and spoiled), which enabled the accurate differentiation of meat freshness. Thus, films with MIL-100(Fe) demonstrated the potential to be amine-sensitive intelligent packaging for monitoring chilled meat freshness in real time.

Bio-based adsorption foam composed of MOF and polyethyleneimine-modified cellulose for selective anionic dye removal

With the increase of sustainable development goal, the bio-based adsorption materials with high and selective dye removal are important for water treatment in the dyeing industry. In this paper, a bio-based adsorption foam composed of metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified cellulose was prepared by a three-step process, i.e., PEI modification of cellulose fibers (PC), MOF decoration of PEI-modified cellulose (MIL-53@PC), and in-situ foaming with polyurethane. PEI modification provides cellulose fiber with more active sites for both dye adsorption and MOF bonding. We found that MIL-53 crystals were tightly bonded on the surface of PC through hydrogen bonding. Because of the abundant adsorption sites (e.g., amines, iron oxide group), the MIL-53@PC demonstrated high adsorption capacity and selectivity for anionic dye (e.g., 936.5 mg/g for methyl orange) through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. Finally, MIL-53@PC particles were blended with a waterborne polyurethane prepolymer to prepare a three-dimensional hydrophilic foam (MIL-53@PC/PUF), which not only maintained high adsorption capacity and selectivity of MIL-53@PC and also improved its recyclability and reusability. The MIL-53@PC/PUF offers a promising solution for dye wastewater treatment.

Crosslinked chitosan-montmorillonite composite and its magnetized counterpart for the removal of basic fuchsin from wastewater: Parametric optimization using Box-Behnken design

Treating wastewater polluted with organic dyestuffs is still a challenge. In that vein, facile synthesis of a structurally simple composite of chitosan with montmorillonite (CS-MMT) using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker and the magnetized analogue (MAG@CS-MMT) was proposed as versatile adsorbents for the cationic dye, basic Fuchsin (FUS). Statistical modeling of the adsorption process was mediated using Box-Behnken (BB) design and by varying the composite dose, pH, [FUS], and contact time. Characterization of both composites showed an enhancement of surface features upon magnetization, substantiating a better FUS removal of the MAG@CS-MMT (%R = 98.43 %) compared to CS-MMT (%R = 68.02 %). The surface area analysis demonstrates that MAG@CS-MMT possesses a higher surface area, measuring 41.54 m2/g, and the surface analysis of the magnetized nanocomposite, conducted using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies, proved the presence of FeO peaks. In the same context, adsorption of FUS onto MAG@CS-MMT fitted-well to the Langmuir isotherm model and the maximum adsorption capacities (qm) were 53.11 mg/g for CS-MMT and 88.34 mg/g for MAG@CS-MMT. Kinetics investigation shows that experimental data fitted well to the pseudo-second order (PSO) model. Regeneration study reveals that MAG@CS-MMT can be recovered effectively for repeated use with a high adsorption efficiency for FUS.

Porous metal-organic framework-acrylamide-chitosan composite aerogels: Preparation, characterization and adsorption mechanism of azo anionic dyes adsorbed from water

Micro- and nano-metal-organic frameworks with different adsorption properties were prepared by a time-modulation hydrothermal method. By comparing the adsorption properties, the most effective MIL-68(Fe)-12 was selected to be mixed with chitosan (CS), and porous metal-organic framework-acrylamide-chitosan composite aerogel (PMACA) was prepared by introducing acrylamide prior to glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The adsorption capacity of PMACA doped with acrylamide was as high as 2086.44 mg·g-1. The adsorption performance of PMACA was 1.48 times higher compared to the porous metal-organic framework-chitosan composite aerogel (PMCA) undoped with acrylamide. With the introduction of acrylamide, the stability of PMACA was improved, making it less prone to dispersion and decomposition. Structural characterization and adsorption properties were analyzed using methods such as XRD, FTIR, TGA, SEM, BET, and Zeta potential. The adsorption performance of PMACA was investigated further through batch tests with variables such as adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial CR solution concentration, and temperature. The model fitting of PMACA was consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the Sips model. The adsorption thermodynamics showed that high temperature promoted spontaneous adsorption behavior. PMACA showed a recovery rate of approximately 86 % after six cyclic adsorption tests. PMACA maintained a recovery rate of roughly 86 % after six cyclic adsorption tests. The combined effects of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π conjugation resulted in excellent adsorption performance, while pore filling also contributed to the efficient adsorption of Congo red (CR).
