Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the proportional variation of macrophage and T-lymphocytes subpopulations in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients, its association with periodontitis (P), and to compare with control individuals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Three groups of subjects participated: one group consisted of 17 ACS patients with P (ACS + P), another group consisted of 22 no ACS + P patients, and a control group consisted of 23 participants with gingivitis (no ACS + G). Macrophage, CD4 + , and CD8 + T-lymphocytes and CD4 + /CD8 + ratio values in gingival tissue were determined histometrically. RESULTS Significant differences were found among three groups regarding the mean number of macrophage (no ACS + P > ACS + P > no ACS + G; p < 0.05) and CD8 + T-lymphocytes (no ACS + P > ACS + P > no ACS + G; p < 0.05). Significant variations were observed between the groups both CD4 + T-lymphocytes densities (ACS + P > no ACS + P and ACS + P > no ACS + G; p < 0.05) and CD4 + / CD8 + ratio (no ACS + P < no ACS + G and ACS + P < no ACS + G; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The increased number of CD8 + T-lymphocytes in both group ACS + P and group no ACS + P resulted in a reduction of the CD4 + /CD8 + ratio in gingival tissue when compared with no ACS + G group. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The decrease of CD4 + /CD8 + ratio in gingival tissue reflects periodontitis and may be associated with severe adverse outcomes in people with ACS.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that is initiated by the deposition and accumulation of low-density lipoproteins in the artery wall. In this review, we will discuss the role of T- and B-cells in human plaques at different stages of atherosclerosis and the utility of profiling circulating immune cells to monitor atherosclerosis progression. Evidence supports a proatherogenic role for intraplaque T helper type 1 (Th1) cells, CD4+CD28null T-cells, and natural killer T-cells, whereas Th2 cells and regulatory T-cells (Treg) have an atheroprotective role. Several studies indicate that intraplaque T-cells are activated upon recognition of endogenous antigens including heat shock protein 60 and oxidized low-density lipoprotein, but antigens derived from pathogens can also trigger T-cell proliferation and cytokine production. Future studies are needed to assess whether circulating cellular biomarkers can improve identification of vulnerable lesions so that effective intervention can be implemented before clinical manifestations are apparent.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ventricular arrhythmia (VA) is related to inflammatory activity. Rhodiola crenulate (RC) and its main active component, salidroside, have been reported as anti-inflammatory agents. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of RC and salidroside in preventing VA via the inhibition of IL-17 in an ischemic heart failure (HF) model. METHODS Rabbit HF models were established by coronary artery ligation for 4 weeks. These rabbits were treated with RC (125, 250, 500 mg/kg) and salidroside (9.5 mg/kg) once every 2 days for 4 weeks. WBC, serum biochemistry, ECG, and the expression of CD4+ T cells were measured every 2 weeks. The mRNA and protein expressions of IL-17 were measured by real time-PCR, ELISA, and Western blotting after RC and salidroside treatment for 4 weeks. Open-chest epicardial catheter stimulation was performed for VA provocation. RESULTS After RC and salidroside treatment in HF left ventricle, (1) the levels of WBC and CD4+ T cells decreased, (2) the expression of IL-17 and its downstream target genes, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-8, and CCL20, reduced, (3) the level of NLRP3 inflammasome was decreased, (4) fibrosis and collagen production were significantly downregulated, (5) p38 MAPK and ERK1/2 phosphorylation were attenuated, (6) the inducibility of VA was decreased, and (7) the levels of Kir2.1, Nav1.5, NCX, PLB, SERCA2a and RyR were up-regulated. CONCLUSIONS RC inhibited the expression of IL-17 and its downstream target genes that were mediated by activation of several MAPKs, which decreased the levels of fibrosis and apoptosis and suppressed VA.

Abstract
The disease criteria used by the World Health Organization (WHO) were applied to human biological aging in order to assess whether aging can be classified as a disease. These criteria were developed for the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and included disease diagnostics, mechanisms, course and outcomes, known interventions, and linkage to genetic and environmental factors. RESULTS: Biological aging can be diagnosed with frailty indices, functional, blood-based biomarkers. A number of major causal mechanisms of human aging involved in various organs have been described, such as inflammation, replicative cellular senescence, immune senescence, proteostasis failures, mitochondrial dysfunctions, fibrotic propensity, hormonal aging, body composition changes, etc. We identified a number of clinically proven interventions, as well as genetic and environmental factors of aging. Therefore, aging fits the ICD-11 criteria and can be considered a disease. Our proposal was submitted to the ICD-11 Joint Task force, and this led to the inclusion of the extension code for "Ageing-related" (XT9T) into the "Causality" section of the ICD-11. This might lead to greater focus on biological aging in global health policy and might provide for more opportunities for the new therapy developers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) detected by multislice computed tomography (MSCT) angiography in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. METHODS Two hundred and ninety-two T2DM patients, who were either asymptomatic or symptomatic (but noncharacteristic) for coronary artery disease (CAD) and underwent MSCT angiography in our clinic between May 2009 and June 2014, were enrolled. All patients were divided into two groups according to their mean NLR values. Patients with NLR ≤2.05 were assigned to Group 1 and patients with NLR >2.05 were assigned to Group 2. The association of NLR with CACS and obstructive CAD, which were detected by MSCT angiography, was investigated in T2DM patients. RESULTS According to the Agatston scoring method, the mean CACS was 129.5±209.8 Au in Group 1 and 290.3±399.6 Au in Group 2 (P<0.001). Obstructive CAD was detected in 40 (26.8%) patients in Group 1 and in 56 (39.2%) patients in Group 2 (P<0.05, P<0.021). CONCLUSION The rate of obstructive CAD was significantly higher in the T2DM patients with NLR >2.05 than that in the T2DM patients with NLR ≤2.05. In addition, the CACS was also significantly higher in the T2DM patients with NLR >2.05 than that in the T2DM patients with NLR ≤2.05.
